Guys, this wonderful lady took her time to teach us a method of decoupage. She has done this before countless times, has purchased expensive video equipment and planned this video very carefully for our benefit. Do you have nothing better than to criticize? At 69 years old I still can't understand why people hurt others. Spend your time doing something constructive and lifting people up instead of tearing them down. Good grief!

Thank you so much. For the "put a thin layer"..be grateful that people are taking the time to help you or go do something g else but please do not be rude. She is kind enough to do this and if you saw the WHOLE video you would know there is more to it or somehow lost sight of it. Again, thanks so much for showing us this.

Just discovered a technique by accident. I was making coasters and they were bubbling somthing fierce. In frustration, I pushed the coaster under a desk lamp where the bulb was about 4 inches from the desk top. This was esentially a heat lamp. The Heat relaxed the bubbles! Even when I put on a new layer, and the bubbles re-appeared, I just re-applyed the heat. Now I just use sunshine, so when the bubble appear, take them out for a tanning session....☺

There is another technique where you paint the glue on, allow it to dry, and then place your paper on the surface. After that, you cover it in parchment paper and iron it on (no steam). It re-activates the glue so it sticks, and it gives a flat and perfect finish. 😊

Thank you for this tip. It solved my wrinkling and bubbling issues, and improved the appearance of the poor quality items I had already done. I find it hard to believe that anyone can apply paper over wet Mod Podge and smooth it and still get consistent results.

Purdy brand brush is number one for sure :) I love using the brush and roller on walls instead of spray painting. The 1" Purdy brush was perfect for edging. I have to pick up some Purdy brushes for decoupaging. It's important to use a good brush where the bristles will not fall out while using the Mod Podge or any other chemical. Thanks for sharing.

I tried to do this stuff once, and it came out pretty good. I Scotch Guarded the paper, and I had no problems with bubbles or wrinkles. I applied the Mod Podge to the board and dragged the edge of a metal ruler across it to trowel it smooth and VERY thin. I did the same after applying the Mod Podge to the paper, and again on the topcoat. I also used waxed paper and a rolling pin. After it all dried, I applied carnauba car wax. (I made a hard mouse pad.)

I've never done Mod Podge before (though I may try it on a gameboard in the near future), but I saw another video where the individual 'painted' it on the bottom part of the paper and then on the board, and then put the paper on the board and used a roller to roll the paper down and mush the excess Mod Podge out where it could be removed. Then (if I recall correctly) after 15-20 minutes she painted over the top. I like the roller idea and it makes sense, so I thought I'd pass it along here too. :)

Very well done. Sometimes even with letting the undercoat dry, when I put on the top coat I've gotten wrinkles. That's when I use my hairdryer on low and cool (which gets just slightly warm) and go back and forth over my project. I do that with as many layers as I need and still allow maximum drying time, esp. with larger objects. Thanks.

Thanks a bunch for this, Addicted2! Helped a lot. I still found a bit of bubbling, but I also discovered that the bubbles were tiny enough to be pressed out easily. From now on, though, it's all about thinner, tackier coats and not slathering the surface.

I have been making projects with decoupage since childhood. Just recently, I can across your video and think it's great. I have always let it dry before adding the top coat, but others just added the top layer like you did in the past. Waiting for it to dry allows me so see where it's wrinkling and lifting and smooth if needed.

Thank You so much. I'm a beginner with Mod Podge. In fact I got some Mod Podge a a little more than week ago and still haven't used it yet. Because I want to do a lot of research before I dive in. This video really helped.

    • @jessicalea
      @jessicalea 9 років тому

jessicalea Update: I tried your suggestion and I still got bubbles. So what I did was this: I 'glued' down the paper with the Mod Podge. Waited for that to dry. Then I sprayed a layer of acrylic spray over the paper. Waited for that to dry. Then a layer of Mod Podge. Waited for that to dry. And for an extra layer of protection, another layer of acrylic spray. I know this may sound like a long, hard way of doing it. But it really didn't take long for each layer to dry. I would say I waited an hour or so between layers. Also I made sure to apply a thin layer each time. Just enough to cover. My project came out perfect. A wood box with photos of my sister's cat, that I gave to her for her birthday.

Thanks for making this video, it really helped me out. As the guy below said, making that picture frame with your finger does trap a minuscule amount of air inside. Mod Podge actually makes a Mod Podge brand roller that is soft but firm silicone and it will virtually guarantee a bubble free finish. It works great and is only about seven bucks. I’d recommend that as well. Thanks again!

I have to correct you on using it in the bathroom. Years ago we remodeled ours andI used tissue paper and modge podge. I took square pieces of tissue paper and crinkled them up and glued them on with the mp and when dried I went over with a coat and it came out beautiful... I am glad it was just a small section I did because it took forever, but the end results were beautiful. Wish I had taken pictures, but I did not.. and have since sold the apartment. But yes, you can use it in the bathroom.

TIP. FOR BURNISHING DOWN THE PAPER. ALWAYS START SMOOTHING IT OUT..."FROM THE MIDDLE" OF THE PAPER. IT PUSHES OUT ANY BUBBLES OR WRINKLES... FOR A VERY CLEAN LOOK..
& NO FLAWS. IF...you do have a lil bubble...take a straight pin, poke a teeny hole in the bubble, allowing AIR to be pushed out thru that teeny hole. GREAT VIDEO.

For those of you who mocked this 7 minute video on how to PROPERLY use Mod Podge, I suggest you either make a BETTER video or leave well enough alone. As they say, "put up or shut up."
If you are so adept at using this product, why check out a site that headlines: HOW TO DECOUPAGE WITH MOD PODGE. Don't give yourselves away so easily. Clearly, there is a market for elementary videos that provide a step by step process for MOST people who can't even open a can of Campbell Soup.

    • @dhbnichols
      @dhbnichols 10 років тому +5

I take umbrage to your closing line. I am watching this video because I've never decoupaged before. I feel I am fairly intelligent w/ common sense, but as a visual/haptic learner, wanted to see Mod Podge being used before attempting it myself. I will not comment on the criticism this video is receiving as I have no prior experience for this product, but please limit your vitriol to those who feel superior to the video.
And yes, I am able to operate both a manual and a mechanical can opener.

This was helpful as I certainly have had the same problems before with ModPodge. Have been doing my own "paintings" on cardboard using discarded trash papers in several colors and just Elmer's glue. Now some are starting to come unglued so hopefully 2 carefully applied thin coats of ModPodge will fix that.

Thanks for a very straightforward instruction. I have decoupaged our little melamine caravan table with snippets of old road maps and tourist brochures. Light sand and 'ESP' coat to make the glossy surface sticky for the Mod Podge and paper.... all good. Now wondering if trying to lightly brush coats of Mod Podge over this (without damaging any ink etc) is too risky, or would a can of expoxy clear spray serve better? ... your thoughts, please.

Just to add a bit of info... The reason Mod Podge tends to wrinkle paper is because Mod Podge is a water based glue. So, depending on your project you may want to try Fabri-Tac. Yes it smells and it's expensive too. I usually use my 40% coupon and go to Hobby Lobby to get it. That being said, I still use A LOT of Mod Podge. (I make books) I usually don't have much trouble with it wrinkling but that's because just by accident I usually allow the application of paper to dry before adding the top coat so I guess that's why I've had pretty good luck most of the time. Thanks for the video. I will also try the idea from Jamie. Sounds like another good tip. :)

You can only allow people to make you feel bad if you allow them. I'm sure we all would love to witness your talent. Honestly those types aren't searching particular channels on UA-cam. I hope to your tutorials soon. I'm sure will after I learn the art. A little about me. I am as tough as they come. I'm a Army veteran of 10 years and a chef. I also found out by trial and error how to avoid wrinkles and bubbles. I always start pressing from the middle of the paper and extend outwards as pressing the edges first can create air bubbles. I have got some really great looking results in ATC's and in my altered projects just experimenting with mod podge. I also prefer the satin finish over any other finish. It always feels so nice and soft ha ha - if that makes sense.

Thank you for pointing out the finger frame trapping air!!! Where is your decoupage channel??? I am sincerely asking this! I suck at decoupage and I need all the help I can get!!!😁
Honestly I'm not trying to sound like a bratty poop head. But I keep reading over my post and I sound like one.
If you dont have a channel, get one and share your talents!!!😉

thanks for the tips, I'm new to MP and have been concern about the wrinkling too;)
I was thinking maybe if you apply the mod podge on the back of the paper, and not on the wood surface, position them where you want, and then place something flat and heavy on top of the whole thing (maybe a piece of mdf with some books or paint tins). After its dry, apply MP to finish. This might also work..though the excess MP might seep out and stick to the mdf..hmmm, I'll have to think about this one...;)

Thanks. You fixed my problem, as always. I couldn't figure out how to skip the wrinkles. My first thought was "maybe Kristi knows."

Thanks for the tips. I would like some ideas about using this technique in a bathroom. Do you have any advice at to which product I could use to seal the project that's going to be in a high moisture area like the bathroom.

Thanks so much for this video. I am about to use mod podge to decoupage a wooden tray with pictures and have never ever used it before, so I am so glad I found this video. Also, can you recommend a water based sealant that would keep the pictures from being damaged if something spilled on the tray? THANKS!

Regular matte medium is very expensive so if I can find a way to use mod podge to glue then that’s great.

I believe if you put the thin layer on your base (timber etc) then also put a thin layer on your cardstock, it may work a little better? Plus that gives you a little more 'movement' if your cardstock etc is crooked... Wait about 15 minutes for that to dry then put on a good layer of Mod Podge over everything (and, if you have one, go over it with the Mod Podge Brayer to make sure you have no wrinkles and most importantly air bubbles) and give it at least a couple of hours to dry. :)

Thank u so much , I found I was having the exact problem and started to think I was crazy for questioning all the hype. After Banging my head against the wall and realizing it's not the product with the problem as is the person who is using the product ( myself) that needs improvement. Lol. Thank u

Personally, I cover the surface with Mod Podge, I let it dry, I place my (Napkin) tissue paper on it and then I iron it on. This ensure no wrinkles or bubbles occur. I don't use my clothes iron, I use a decoupage or small plate (a couple of inches long) wax iron. This works beautifully too and is perfect for small rounded areas.

Yep..a rolling pin or brayer (sp) works for removing bubbles and such. Your video explained the technique perfectly.

Not to seem weird or creepy, but you have a very pleasant hands, & your fingers tracing the paper as you decopague is quite hypnotic asmr stuff. You could seriously start a decopague asmr channel, just softly, slowly tracing paper around the edges, speaking instructions with a voice just above a whisper. And you would get thousands upon thousands of views. Not kidding. I'll just see myself out.
