Is Baldur's Gate 3 The Ultimate D&D Video Game?

  • Now, I think it’s fair to say that people really like Baldur’s Gate 3. 800,000 people are currently playing it via Steam at the time of recording. It’s the highest rated game of all time, according to aggregate site Opencritic. My 62 year old Dad asked me about it over the weekend, which honestly is the most impressive accolade a game can receive. The last game he cared about was The Great Escape. Remember that? Of course you don’t. Stop lying.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is exceptional, then, a flexible and dynamic RPG that provides players with a vast fantasy sandbox that reacts to their every decision, not unlike Dungeons and Dragons, the table top RPG it’s built upon. Based on the game’s fifth edition ruleset, Baldur’s Gate 3 aims to replicate the joy of Dungeons and Dragons in video game form, but how successful is it at that monumental task?
To discuss this question, I’m joined by deputy editor Alice B, who has spent many hours with both Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons and Dragons proper. So, is Baldur's Gate 3 the ultimate D&D video game? Watch to find out, and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

A ultimate D&D Game for me would need a Dungeon Master Mode and a Editor like Neverwinter Nights did 15 years ago. However , BG3 is the best D&D Module on the PC ever made.

@@fazzi4019 I hope BG3's success goes so far as to not just put in their stated upcoming mod tools, but a fantastic DM mode, and expanded mod tools that let creators go crazy with campaign designs (INCLUDING cinematics to a degree; bigger ones will require much more custom work - and voice acting).

This will certainly never be the officially stated reason, but my guess as to why there is no dungeon master mode is that it would compete with WOTC. Also, it’s a lot of work and it’s wasn’t very popular in divinity. Still I think the primary reason is WoTC trying to do their own virtual D&D thing and having larian do it better would be bad for business

Is your dad going to play it? I'm 66 and love it. Only currently halfway through Act 2 but I've already spent over 100 hours already with so much to discover. It helps to know a bit about DnD combat rules but it is presented in a pretty easy to understand way with this game. As regards to the dialogue and story I highly suggest you just go with the dice rolls. It makes for a very immersive game where you just have to adapt to taking the good with the bad, just like it is in real life.

I understand this frustration, but my overall feeling after a play through is I have no issues with the way it functions in game. I like the way pathfinder wotr worked where skill checks would use all of the party’s proficiencies, but I also liked the way it is in bg3… I guess bg3 feels better from a story experience? I am not sure, I just felt like my character failing certain skill checks even though I had proficiencies in my party didn’t feel bad to me

The 5th edition of DnD is actually the more simplified of the last 3. If they find it complicated what will they say about AD&D or the 3rd edition?

woman from video here: I've played other TRPGs and D&D editions! I should have perhaps been clearer but when I said it has a higher barrier of entry than most RPGs I meant video game RPGs (also distinct from cRPGs, I guess), as in if you have largely only played e.g. Skyrim and Dragon Age, a game based on D&D rules is more complicated. (But also D20 is my least favourite system lol)

Personal opinion, no, bg3 isn't the ultimate dungeons and dragons video game. Not even the ultimate dnd 5e video game. It's a great game, don't get me wrong. But it's not the ultimate dnd video game. There is another 5e game which follows the rules more closely has a level editior and you can hold your action oh also the level cap now goes beyond 12 in that one

Solasta?.. not sure if that’s what you’re referring to but it’s definitely more true to 5e combat wise. Just the role playing was very limited. Didn’t really detract from my enjoyment, it’s just not the type of game I’d play a bard in… think bg3 really nails the non combat aspects that makes it feel like a better d&d video game

Not the ultimate DnD game (Neverwinter Nights did this 20 years ago with its amazing editor and DM mode). Also, comparing computer games to real-life table top sessions with real people and a real DM is just pointless. Its a whole different planet. No video game will ever give you the same amount of creativity, adrenaline, immersion and fun.

It is very D&D like, I think Solasta is more faithful to the mechanics but that is a pretty bare bones indie game. This is a rich feast of a game. Just finished Act 2. Lone time d&d player and DM. A regular DM'ed game is going to be a different experience more tuned to the party playing it. However, very few DMs will have the writing chops of the Larian team.

You likely shouldn't jump into 5e as a first time player and pick wizard. Spell casters are supposed to be more complex when sitting down at the table. Anyone brand new to 5e D&D should play something like a champion fighter or monk, or maybe ranger. Warlock is definitely the best class to start to learn about spell casting from an ease of learning curve. Two spells per short rest. Spam Eldritch blast.

At Act 2, is a very good game but feels more like DOS3 than BG. It's nothing to do with the game but I'm dislike 5E rules.
