What's really amazing is how perfectly he timed it out, walking very slowly around the stage and sitting down at the drum set, JUST in time for the solo!
I agree,I've mentioned this in another reactors comment section, the fact that he only just made it in time to come in with that fill with the other musicians, didn't even have time to get comfortable on the drum seat.I'm a drummer myself and I have to take a second to settle myself on the seat.
Yeah I love how he's incorporated a lil bit of theater to tell a story with this song as it slowly builds. I love it when artists improve their own song by listening to their band mates. You can tell how tightly performed they played this, no telling how many 1000's of times they've played it and improved it.
@@andrewmccormack4295 He didn't just make it, he had been playing that song for 20 years at that point, he knew where to be every step of that 5 minute walk to the drums.

Phil talked about wanting a drum riff to really drive the song. He is such a perfectionist, that he recorded 22 different solos for the song, and the one he used was #4.
The crowd loses their shit when they see Phil approaching those drums. As many times as I've heard this song, it never gets old when he hits the drums.
The smiles on both of your faces said it all. Phil Collins is a giant talent. He did the soundtrack for Disney's Tarzan. You might want to check some of that material out. It's pretty amazing. Aside from that there is also a live version of a song called Abacab, from when he was still in Genesis and it's fire.
Definitely one of the best reactions from You Guys . The best part is when Phil starts playing the drums . You can tell from the Audiences reaction just before he starts , you know something special is about to happen .

The most famous drum drop. You also have to admire the exact timing that was done for him to arrive at his drums at the perfect time. Thank you peace ✌️
One of the greatest drum beats of all time. He’s a great performer. During 85 at Live Aid, he played London then flew a Concord jet and played in Philly later in the same day.
I think that there is a handful of perfect live performances captured on film and this is most definitely one of them. I've seen this dozens of times and it never gets old. Great choice!
Technically that shouldn't be possible. Playing the drums and singing like that is virtually impossible. The techniques used to keep his voice stable, in tune and linear are astonishing.
When Genesis started out in England in the late 60's/early 70's, they were a weird band that wrote very complicated musical pieces based on fantasy... Peter Gabriel was the lead singer - he would dress up in costumes or as weird characters on stage... Phil Collins joined as their drummer in the early 70's and would also contribute backing vocals. In 1975, Peter Gabriel quit the band, and Genesis couldn't find a replacement vocalist while writing and recording their album "A Trick of the tail"... Finally, Phil Collins agreed to try record vocals for the album, and it worked... That record outsold all the previous Genesis albums. In 1979, Phil Collins went thru a painful separation & divorce from his 1st wife Andrea... he was inspired to write a whole batch of songs about his personal heartbreak (some were on the 1980 album 'Duke' by Genesis) that he recorded and played most of the instruments on his debut solo album 'Face value' in 1981. 'In the air tonight' was a huge hit (It was directed at his ex-wife) and 'Face value' actually outsold both the albums 'Duke' (1980) and 'Abacab' (1981) by Genesis. Phil Collins' solo records outsold his Genesis albums in the 80's... but he did both for years until 1993. To this day, Phil Collins remains close to Genesis members Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass) & Tony Banks (keyboards) Genesis recorded the album 'Calling all stations' in 1997 w/ singer Ray Wilson, but it didn't work... Phil Collins returned to Genesis in 1999 to re-record a track for a 'Greatest hits' album... then a Genesis tour in 2007... He just did a US tour w/ Genesis in 2021 (Likely his last, due to his health problems)
Yes. I'm glad that he participated in the video for it, too. From what I remember, he had quit Genesis and moved to Switzerland to be with his family, so he said that he would do the video it they could shoot it there. They agreed to it and the video turned out great. It looks really good.
Phil Collins is simply amazing! His vocals combined with his drumming skills is in a class all its own! I love watching this live version- always a little nervous he won’t make it to the drum kit on time, lol!
Phil is a treasure and one of the greats in music. Love your comments and enthusiasm for this song and video. If your looking for great music that last listen to the 60's, 70's and 80's.
You should go to a live concert. There is nothing like it. The atmosphere is electric. The best concerts build up the anticipation. That’s why a lot of artists start late. Music will be playing. Setting the mood. The lights will go out. The band will start playing without the the lead singer being there. They will play an extended intro to get the audience hyped. Then the lead singer will appear, the lights will flash on brightly and the song will begin. It’s a total vibe. Phil was a drummer for his earlier band Genesis. He also wrote the lyrics and could also play keyboards.Along with a fantastic light show, the music just washes over you. I highly recommend you see as many live shows as you can.
People who have heard the song can have the same reaction as those who never have. This live performance is just that impactful. It's not exactly '85 Queen Live Aid, but who is besides Queen? But it's up there. And then there are the Miami Vice flashbacks that accompany this song.
I've loved this song since I was a kid. Watching your faces light up when he gets on the drums reminded me of the first time I heard this song, you guys totally made my day, thank you for that!
Between awesome shows like this and his music being played on Miami Vice Phil ruled the 80's. It's still awesome, time hasn't diminished the greatness of his music, both with Genesis and especially his solo run.
Phil did a brilliant job taking over from Peter Gabriel as lead singer of Genesis. You must checkout his drunming with Genesis too. The old medley of songs is incredible where Phil sings and goes back to playing drums finishing with the Brilliant song Afterglow amazing show in front of 500,000 fans live in Rome.
Phil Collins is an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist. If you want to hear another track where he shows off his vocals check out Mama by Genesis.
The intro was played by Brad Cole. Brad does keyboards and vocoder for the song. The drums are the roland CR-78 was the drum machine used in the original recorded. Phill uses samples of the drum machine live. most of the drums before phill's drop are the drum machine samples
There are so many musical hooks in this - the first full organ sound, the percussive beat with no drums, the guitar chord, the high guitar riff, solid bass riff from the master Leland Sklar, the electronic voiceover and then the drum drop. THAT Drum Drop! And all done live ..... Dear God.
I absolutely love several things about this reaction. One of them is her smile throughout the reaction. It makes you think she is really enjoying it. This one is more of a general: I really enjoy in this reaction when people aren't aware that Phil Collins is a drummer and then that drum intro comes in. Watching the reaction is great because people don't expect it. Phil Collins just performed his last show ever because of health problems. He physically isn't able to play the drums anymore.
He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).
He beats thosee drums like they owed him money. Phil is definitely a talented man. Give Peter Gabriel's Sledge Hammer a listen. He was the lead singer for Genesis before he left for a solo career.

And he did this with a crowd of 80,000, but they were very good behaver-ed for him but I don't think that I have ever heard the applause so loud, that they gave him at the end of his performance....
I'm 46 and love this song. This live version is such a better version than the album version. And the original was a massive hit back then in the 80's. Infact this song was the soundtrack for a hit TV show called 'Miami Vice'. He's played this song so many times with his group, and the song has matured to that awesome version you heard. And not to mention he was an alcoholic for many years. Hard to imagine that his wonderful talent shined through the abuse he was putting his body through. It has taken a toll on his body sadly to report. Phil can no longer play the drums and his voice does struggle when he sings. But he does sing on a reduced tour when he can prior to the pandemic. This was a pleasure to hear you appreciate this song as well. Great music is always timeless!
If you loved this, you need to see the live of Genesis (He still played with them while he had a solo career - two huge careers at the same time) Home By The Sea and Second Home By The Sea. you will love it as much or more as this one. Not lying. His biggest fans oftentimes list that as their favorite. Many others to check out that are all pretty fire too. Invisible Touch, Abacab, Mama, so many.
And Bone thugs got a song with Phil Collins called home. They actually flew to Europe to shoot the video with him making them the greatest most versatile group of all time
The bass-player with the big bushy beard is Leland Sklar, who has played on more than 2000 albums and with just about anybody you can think of at one time or another.
Grew up listening to these music as a kid, my dad used to play these and since then this era of music has stuck with me, man I miss my dad wish he was still here...
Such a long slow entro that you want to scream, GO! But he has ahold of you and just adds suspense, more layers until he sings. And then more layers of sound until BAM, he hits it and you are toast.
Fun fact, few people know that the music here reflects his emotional swing and relief when all this crap is over(divorce) he drives very hard, every look, facial expression does everything as much as he wants you to know, the whole build of this is his emotions
Pleaseeeee do more Phil Collins!!!! He has such a great catalog!!! Solo & with Genesis... I don't care anymore, Another day in paradise, Against all odds, Something happened on the way to heaven, Groovy kind of love, In too deep, Sussudio, Easy lover, I can't dance, & soooo many more
Phil Collins started in the band Genesis & was the drummer! Which shows how amazing he was with the song 'In the Air Tonight'. He was just a GENIOUS!!!! (Still alive!!!!)
That big grin when you both realized he was about to play drums....and he plays drums like they did something bad and need a beating lol. Love this song and keep listening to great music thats not made in a studio but by talented people who never heard of auto tune :)
Your reaction to this was great , he is so so talented music writer, singer, drummer, actor and amazing human. All live no messing , to phones or cameras it’s a shame you won’t ever feel the atmosphere of a concert like they were back then.
Phil wrote the song while in the midst of his rather brutal divorce. Iconic performer, man, and song. Unfortunately due to spinal issues, he can no longer play the drums. You should definitely react to more of him in the future
This is the most famous and spectacular drum break of all time - used in soundtracks and commercials everywhere. Phil is known as a great drummer - he was given a baby drum set almost before he could walk! Because he became known as 'the drummer' in the band Genesis and took over lead Vocal later, after the original lead left, people thought the vocals were secondary - but, as you can see/ hear in his solo concerts like here and on his many albums he is an absolute master of voice also. In addition to being a brilliant songwriter and musical arranger, Phil was singing from a very early age. In fact there is a true story about him going for a singing audition - for a Musical Theatre production I think - aged 5, and after a few notes he stops and tells the band that they are in the wrong key. And he was right! 😂
Best live performance of any band, EVER! So sad our generation is dying off. I heard his son plays the drums too. Real music is meant to hit your soul on a cellular level.
I highly recommend also listening to Land Of Confusion by Genesis shortly before Phil Collins went solo. And you MUST watch the video. It’s a lot of social and political commentary from the mid-80s, with a very creative and memorable video.
I love watching people see this for the first time. Your reaction , perfect. I remember when it first came out and seeing the video, still gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it
That drum beat is arguably the greatest drop out of nowhere in music history.

Phil is a top 3 artist of the 80-90’s to me. He went off then went to Disney and went off on Tarzan!
Beginning of the concert...setting the mood!
They actually flew to Europe to shoot the video with him making them the greatest most versatile group of all time
Amazing song. I used to BANG Home on my way back from work back in the day 😂😂
Released in 1981, it was a revolutionary song on the radio at the time!
One of the greatest live performances ever
To see to young people smile so much for song made in 80s is enough to say Phil Collins rocks 👍👍👍👍
That huge smile when he starts drumming is gold ✨️ 💛
I have never seen her so engaged in a video. Your faces and smiles were awesome!!!
Phil Collins was always on the radio in the 90s. "So take a look at me now. It's just an empty space..."
In 1981 is when he made that tune. I was just turning 21 old school is my school.
Such a long slow entro that you want to scream, GO! But he has ahold of you and just adds suspense, more layers until he sings. And then more layers of sound until BAM, he hits it and you are toast.
so smooth......then Phil brings it! FIRE! can't hear it enough.
Fun fact, few people know that the music here reflects his emotional swing and relief when all this crap is over(divorce)
he drives very hard, every look, facial expression does everything as much as he wants you to know, the whole build of this is his emotions
you may have missed that when Phil was playing the drums it was a drum duet, Phil Collins wrote this song way back in 1980 about his bas divorce
The two of you GRINNING 👂 TO 👂 through the entire 🥁 solo...perfection. welcome to the genius of Phil Collins!!!
Phil Collins is multi talented he's an actor and he can also play a large amount of instruments.
If you look up the greatest drum fill of all time this is likely it. The Phil Collins rabbit hole is a deep one.
Great song choice. Check out Easy Lover with Phillip Bailey from Earth, Wind and Fire!
8:05 those smiles are the reason why I still watch In the air tonight live reactions! Awesome! Thank you guys! 😍😍😍
I highly recommend also listening to Land Of Confusion by Genesis shortly before Phil Collins went solo. And you MUST watch the video. It’s a lot of social and political commentary from the mid-80s, with a very creative and memorable video.
I remember when this 1st came out. it was fantastic.hearing seeing it performed live is magical! it gives you goosebumps. and it still does.
I love watching people see this for the first time.
Your reaction , perfect.
I remember when it first came out and seeing the video, still gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it
