BMW 530d F11 BROKEN TIMING CHAIN - Part 2: DIY Removing the Gearbox ZF8HP70

  • As part 2 of my project to repair the damage from my broken timing chain I have decided to approach the timing cover from underneath, which means removing the transmission.
    This is not easy, but it is possible to do at home... you just need to be prepared for the work & plan everything out to remain safe.
    This is not a ‘how to’ but more of an example of how I am doing it, so please do not blindly follow anything from my videos. You must do your own research & do not tackle any job unless you are comfortable you have the knowledge & equipment to do it.

    Taking everything off is always the easiest part of any job. Puting everything back together where you can seperate mens from boys! Still, good job, there are alot of people who couldnt this job even with proper car lift, gearbox holder and etc tools. This is a proper DIY. I take my hat off for you doing this on driveway.

    I know it was manual and yours is auto but I changed the clutch and flywheel on a e60 530d and made the mistake of not taking notice of where the flywheel was positioned as there was a few positions you could refit it as I didn’t now , long story short put all back together and wouldn’t start , eventually on live data noticed the flywheel sensor (magic eye was saying incorrect signal (put new flywheel back on in incorrect position 😩, boss wasn’t happy , lesson learnt lol .anyway give ya self a pat on the back for progress so far , big ups 👍

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 років тому +1

      Luckily on this one the flywheel has one extra ‘hole’ around the ring of bolts so it can only go back on one way. Weirdly though, there are 2 similar looking holes around the edge to lock it at cyl 1 TDC & I only realised because I took a peek at the cylinders... only to see piston 1 nowhere near TDC! 😬
      Think I’ve got the right one now though...

    Great job mate so far. One thing i would say is don't rely on tyres to hold a car up while you are under it. If a tyre was to deflate it only takes a couple of inches to do some serious damage to you. Try to put axle stands onto rigid parts of the underbody such as subframes etc. Car ramps are fine just use some axle stands too as backup.

    Interesting.. I’m tempted to put a new torque converter in my E53 X5 and this is giving me inspiration. Although I have been quoted only £600 + vat by a trans specialist so I’m not sure if it’s worth the agro just to save a few hundred pounds.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 років тому +1

      To be honest, I would just pay them to do that. It would be sooo much easier on a 4 post lift, so they’d do it pretty quickly too I bet. I was on the fence for a few days about whether to drop the trans or hire a hoist to get the engine out... I wouldn’t say it’s complicated, just hard work 😓

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      Yes, I did change the ATF filter pan. Not because of the weight though - it should be completely fine to sit on its belly-pan. Considering it’s mileage it just seemed a good idea to renew the fluid & filter as part of the job 👍

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 років тому

      After a close visual inspection the cylinders look completely fine. The rocker arms work in a ‘sacrificial’ manor in the event of a piston strike so there is no significant shock transferred to the con rods & crankshaft

  • @hammerfm
    @hammerfm 4 роки тому

    WOW. Thats impressive! One question. Why did you have to drain transmission fluid?

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  4 роки тому

      2 reasons:
      Firstly because it reduced the weight of the transmission I was lowering.
      Secondly because I also wanted to replace the fluid because it had covered over 160k miles from new.
      This idea of ‘sealed for life’ transmission fluids is a terrible idea so I wanted to refresh it & replace the filter pan too 👍

    Hat off to you, no doubt about it ! But having gone trough this experience, working after coming from work, arguments with missus etc, would you do it again or would you give it away to a garage to do it and pay for it ? I know doing the usual diy at your car feels rewarding but in this case it was quite an extreme

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 років тому

      It was quite an extreme repair, no doubt about that. The problem is that it just doesn’t make sense to pay perhaps £3k to repair a car I bought for £5k, and will never really be worth much more than that... I really wouldn’t fancy doing the job again, but if I had to I would. I could also probably do it twice as fast now too 😀😂

    Hi.
    And the reason for the chain to broke was?
    High mileage?
    I have E36 and i have read that 300k km is good time to replace timing chain and all the related parts.
    I have 314000 km and i haven't done this.
    But i see that chain is stretched out. Timing cant be aligned according to arrows. But car works ok.
    M43 engine, car 1996, engine 1.6
    Reason i haven't done this is that i want a newer car with automatic transmission and with more powerful engine

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 років тому

      They made things properly back in the 90’s by all accounts.... If you’ve done 300k on a chain then I think you’ve had good performance - probably worth thinking about replacing it though? No chain lasts forever of course 👍

      No, it’s earthed through the body. The big red cable is permanent live 12v and the thinner wire is the signal wire which only supplies 12v while you are cranking the engine. I think it goes back to a relay in the engine bay electrical box.

      I’d just start with the basics like air, fuel & timing… and take it from there. If the fuel rail is primed then the engine should be injecting fuel & if your glow plugs are ok then you should hear some combustion. If the starter is definitely cranking but it won’t run then I’d be curious about the fuel supply pressure or engine timing.

    I admire your pluck!
    Because thank God I just cant be physically arsed anymore doing what you are doing on your Drive.
    Until very recently finances have always dictated that I drove Shit of various manufacturers. Seems I have spent many psychologically damaging years on my back with the car precariously up on ramshacle arrangements in the pissing rain pathetically trying to undo seized metric pinch bolts with a near AF equivalent spanner and a one clawed claw hammer!
    Split knuckles lost nails and the sheer injustice of mechanical intransigence of even simple tasks have led me to the conclusion that its not worth your sanity in the long run.

      Ah, good question. No I had already disconnected the end of the propshaft which connects to the rear differential. I had it balanced on an axle stand so that I could turn it 👍

    I am replacing the timing chain on my F3 328i xdrive. The job does not require removing the transmission.

    What I always say when you get failures like this.. At least it is a good opportunity to give your engine some TLC by cleaning it and decarboning it.
