Thank you George for such interesting blogs. My car is a 2012 F20 120d with the N47. I recently followed your blog on removal of the inlet manifold to replace the coolant inlet flange. I have done just on 350 000 kilometres and to my surprise the manifold did not require cleaning. Most of my driving is long distance trips between Johannesburg and my farm in the Free State, a distance of 350 km, which I do more or less once in two weeks. I am rather alarmed about your comment on the timing chain. I service my car myself at 15 000km intervals using only 5w40 pure synthetic oil. I have never had any mechanical failure. I have driven other BM's and Alfas. This is the best car I have had. Sadly, I am about to replace it.
Very informative video! Thanks! I'm driving one of these, specifically the F10 535d. What I'd like to say if you keep the service intervals at 15k miles, neglect the time needed for the engine oil to warm up and use bad quality oil then don't be surprised when everything will start to fail. My interval is 1year / 6-10k miles. I always let the oil to warm up mid-range of the gauge before I start fooling around. I've never, ever used launch control and I'm using high quality LL04 oil and high quality diesel. Don't make the mistake of using LL01 / cheap diesel or your DPF will die quickly. Especially if you don't do much of a highway daily. Happily hitting 100k miles now with no problems whatsoever.
It would have been easier to place them in the front, but it´s not really a fault is just a different design,... the chain can be replaced from underneath the car, no need to take out the engine; that is what BMW service do, they don´t take out the engines.
Mine never failed and I changed my oil every 19k miles on my E60 520d. At 220k miles I decided to change the chain for peace of mind. Now I am on 250k miles and only the turbo was serviced and the water pump and some front suspension parts changed. Going like a clock and still reaching 140mph without any problem. But now in its old age (59 plate), I give it tlc and change the 5w30 oil every 10k. I have now decided to change the auto transmission oil and filter plate before Christmas. ☘️☘️
Timing chain on my f10 N57 broke at about 100k miles. I'd bought the car at about 80k miles and after the warranty finished I took out private warrant.. as expected the timing chain was NOT covered and cost me the best part of 2k to fix! My previous M57 was absolutely bullet proof. All I ever done was a swirl flap delete and changed the oil breather spongy thing to a vortex type. It lasted me 250k miles. Was still going strong when I sold it. This n57 has given me no end of problems and it's only just reached 120k miles.
I have owned a lot of bmw ,s ,starting with the 1800 ,through to the present X3 ,with the n47 engine .I would recommend anyone with a BMW to listen to George and change the oil every 5000 MILES regardless.don,t do it and you will have a lot of problems apart from the timing chain, the biggest is the camshaft, rockers, valve seals ect .
"That's just down to their neglect" I agree totally. at 70k or 80k and then especially over 100K you have to expect that even long life parts will be getting tired. Whether you get another 50K or 5K is pot luck that no-one can calculate as too many variables. Either buy a new car, or one with 100K+ and expect to maintain it, or pay someone else to do it for you. Great video, gonna break out the tools and start doing some of these bits for cheap. Just wish I didn't have to take all the damn covers off every time
My N47 cars over the years..... - BMW 118d/58 mileage = 250,000 miles (regular 8,000/10,000 miles) oil changes - BMW 318d 2012/12 = 140,000 miles (regular 8,000/10,000 miles) - BMW MINI 2009/59 1.4 PSA (another issue with long intervals on their chains) mileage = 150,000 miles (regular 8,000/10,000 miles). See the running theme here, oil service intervals are the secret to long life, not even expensive oil, just the cheapest correct spec I can find. Also, this will help your turbo's on the cars also, that can leave a £1k fix if these get neglected, again linked to long oil intervals.
Much appreciated I've got a 1 series with 147k. Just sorted the abs rings, now got a egr / dpf issues causing intermittent limp mode. So the egr is going, hopefully a dpf clean then that's sorted. Now I know things I should replace as soon as I can thanks. After I look in the service history, with any luck some or this has been done 😂 but I don't think so
I have a 2009 E91 318D with the N47. It has now done 105000miles and the chain sound is there. The engine has performed flawless up until now. (with regular oil changes) I'm educating myself to do the chain job myself. So I must thank you for making these informative videos on this engine. It's like you say, spite it's trouble it is a great engine that really performs and still keeps fuel consummation really low. To bad that in my country(Norway) it's illegal to remove the EGR system, so I'm stuck with it.
Check that its not a recalled item, there was a fault with the timing chains in these that caused failure (chain rubbed)... it was on watchdog in the UK: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/23p5j5wzPtYflS7kFvmKVZf/bmw-deny-engine-failures-are-due-to-manufacturing-fault#:~:text=The%20Team-,BMW%20deny%20engine%20failures%20are%20due%20to%20manufacturing%20fault,built%20between%202007%20and%202009.&text=But%20if%20the%20timing%20chain,that%20can%20happen%20without%20warning. Hey, I know this comment was made pretty long back, but did you end doing the timing chain replacement ? and did you do it yourself ?

This video really gave me hope on my recent purchase, 520d with 240.000km. I wasn’t aware of any issue at the time that I bought the car. Then I saw so many people complaining and saying to run away from that engine. I was really sad about that. However the car sounds and fells just great. Now I know what I have to look after. Many thanks for your video.
@@motheongoepe56 I haven’t drive it, because I’m working out. But I changed the timing kit. But I no longer think too much about the issues. People stress a lot (too much).
Yes, everything seems ok until now. But I did just 5.000km since I bought it. I’m planing on getting it remapped within a couple months, and possibly remove the PAF.
@Nice, i just bought a 520D last week it broke down on the highway on my way home from the dealership, towed it back there and they are currently fixing it
4:48 just to add some more advice. The high pressure fuel pump needs looking after by using decent fuel and getting a fuel filter change with a service.

My brother’s 318D just got its timing chain ripped. RIP 🪦 However my 118D has done 270000 km. So far only EGR has failed(Its been deactivated) I changed the suspension and brakepads around 200000 and its been going since then. Regular service interval with good quality oil in between. Its now time to give it some love. Brake discs and belt change. Also got a whining noise. Could be alternator bearing. Best car i ever owned although it’s getting old and beat up.
Nice video mate, just a couple of points. Title is a bit OTT, these are common points of failure but by no means guaranteed to fail after 100k. I recently sold my 2012 e90 N47 with 199k and none of those things had failed. Just regular maintainence. The other thing is I wouldn't publicly recommend removing the EGR. BMW put it there to channel your sooty emissions back into the engine to be burnt off to comply with emissions regulations. By removing it your sooty emissions aren't recirculating into the engine but going straight out the exhaust into the air everyone breathes, so whilst it may be better for your car it's not for the environment, so yeah, that's illegal.
The funny thing is that I have a 2010 320d which I bought 5 years ago with 136 000 km and now has 345 000 km . All of those parts that the guy listed already failed .
Isn't an N57 timing chain failure really rare? Isn't it mostly the N47 that suffers this? Btw, 5k miles oil changes is over kill, 10k/1yr is fine. As for the belt, you can see when they need changing when they start cracking on the ribs, or get squeaky (I'm not referring to slipping). And I would think you'd be able to see the crank pulley rubber cracking too? Good video anyway.
I have a 2012 BMW 520d F10 and it’s done 220,000 miles and the timing chain is beginning to fail. It’s soon getting replaced. It’s amazing how long timing chains can actually go if the car is regularly serviced. 😮
@@michakalinowski7418 it’s like a rattling noise that is there for like 2 or 3 seconds just after the engine startup. You’ll mostly notice it on a cold start.
George you have wright with all the parts you have metion, my engine is an n57 with 120000miles and I have replace them all and all have just a little bit of life left in them...Thanks for advice and this grate info. Keep it going!!!!!
I have never heard that the harmonic balancer failing. M57 for sure. But not on n57. Anyways I'm at 110k miles. Injectors are all solid the seals. Glow plugs never had issues either. But good Informative info.
While EGR delete sounds good keep in mind the whole purpose of it is to lower the temperature inside the combustion chamber, and this makes the Zeldovich mechanism not to trigger as much (where nitrogen from air at high temp makes it degrade and react with oxygen and makes NOx pollutants). While at MOT on diesel afaik is only measured the opacity (and here EGR delete is actually beneficial), the NOx will be way higher! Pollutuion aside, without EGR the mean temperature inside the chamber will be a fair bit higher. This will make the engine slightly overheated. Keep a watch on coolant temperature. (wait... E60 does not have a proper coolant temp gauge. but you can activate the digital gauge from the menu before each start)
@@GeorgeAusters Here there are two modifications at once, since collant does not get heated by EGR gases anymore, but in theory and practice there is more heat generated in combustion chamber and this may result in lower temp overall. Could be. On my other car with renault F9Q engine after egr block the thermostat position at same temperature was higher than before egr removal. So this means the temp overall is not rising (the thermostat is taking care of that) but the heat produced is higher. (the Renault F9Q does not have egr cooler) I recently got an E61 520D with quite some milage (270000km) in pretty good shape, everything working, no errors on ISTA-D, full service history with regular maintenance done only in dealership up to 250000km at a very good price. I plan to replace the timing chain as you did in your video but would rather leave the engine in place and remove the gearbox. (i have a garage with car lift so no trouble going underneath) This way i don't mess with the wire loom on the engine. Also i have a gear puller to remove the pinion on the high pressure diesel pump so will not touch (hopefully) the mounting of the pump. I am an automotive phd engineer and teach about diesel injection principles at university. My experience wrenching is low since i don't do this every day but i've rebuilt engines and gearboxes before and will tackle the repairs myself.
Really great video; I'm just planning on buying and F11 535d or 530d. I've always enjoyed working on my Beemers and taking the engine out doesn't phase me.. this video is really helpful thanks a lot for posting mate :-)
My crankshaft pulley failed yesterday at 197k km, tensioner wheel is locked, errors on dashboard: charging system failed, no power steering, no AC, engine overheating (in my case i was couple km from home and i drove it like that because i didn't know what failed, first i thought is the power steering pump that failed) 👍
Top man mines a x5. Ex police I've had it since 2015. I should of done a video when I removed the engine and gearbox as the x5 is a 4 wheel drive. U can't do it in the car. Mines done 250 thousand. Just doing my rocker cover gasket this week.
no offense, but i had a bmw e36,1.6 with no problem, timing chain in 460 000km,the guy who bought the car is still using it,so well done bmw.Like volkswagen with the tfsi engines. So i bought a mazda 3 brand new in 2017,no problems yet.
Hello, do you have a garage?, I got a BMW X5 E70 LCI 40d N57D30 engine, perfectly fine but worth checking all pints that you mentioned, thanks for this video and the other videos, valuable information.😉
Crankshaft pulley went at 135 k. Old rubber Centre just destroyed itself so worth changing for sure though not the cheapest part. Belt changed of course. Just seen this vid so will look at your other recommendations. Many thanks.
I just bought an 330d xd n57 engine. Every problem you mentioned i will do thx man. But if you watch my short video you will hear missfire what do you think it is. Also it has a chip remapping so i have around 300pk and 186.000km on the engine. And the 300 need to go up 😎
Another very helpful vid - thanks for that! :-) By the way: It took me some time to realize that the crankcase breather became leaky. Rheingold / error register displayed "3FF0 Airflow meter plausibility error" or "Ladedruck", so i changed the Airflow meter without any effect for 140€. In the end, replacing the crankcase breather solved the problem. N47 actually at 100.000 Miles. No probs with timing chain (built 12/2010, E91 LCI).
George, do you recommend replacing the water pump and thermostat while you're already there doing the crank pulley/harmonic balancer, drive belt, and belt tensioner? It would seem a natural time to get this done, but perhaps the cooling system is not very stressed being a diesel and the pump bearing lasts 200K miles rather than 100K. Would you choose to do it at say 120K if the pump was not weeping?
Hello, I just bought a 320D but had not heard of the engine problems before, I read that a lot of the issues arrived on engines of 2009 and earlier and that some improvements were incorporated in 2011, the N47 engines were replaced in 2014, mine is december 2013, might that suggest my risk of these problems is less. Looking at some videos I saw that there was a change of timing belt tensioner, I wonder what other differences there might have been.
Thanks for the great video. Glad you actually showed the engine unlike other youtubers. Quick question. . When you say miles, that isn't slang for kms, yea? My 2016 328d is at 110 000 kms so I want to be sure.
Got a leaky valve cover gasket. Should I replace both the valve cover and the gasket, while I’ve got the thing off, or is it fine to reuse? If I’m not mistaken, it’s plastic, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it warped from repeated heat cycles and led to the cover leak to begin with. Got 108,000 miles.
Wish id found channel a few weeks ago 😅 E82 / N47 with 156k miles. Just had the EGR replaced as well as the manifold aa due to a cardon build up, it had focused the heat and eventually burned a hole in the casing! Should have deleted 🤦♂️ lol
Great video’s from your channel. Really appreciate the time and effort you put in to produce them. My F10 has CBS and after a service reset starts at 17k miles and works down from there, but I ignore this and service it between every 8k to 10k miles. I try to stay on top of all it’s servicing needs, and in 8 years of ownership and 155k miles it’s never broken down on me once, not a single time! (need to possibly do the chain though)??? Possibly chop it in before that though!
You didn't mention water pumps. My 2017 335d has developed a noise which sounds like a rough bearing, coming from behind and below all the EGR crap! Do you agree the water pump is the most likely cause? No water or oil leaks, no overheating, runs fine, just doesn't sound great. It's done 91k of mainly stress free motorway cruising, with an occasional blast when fully warm to blow the cobwebs out 😂
Any gauge on what parts go first on a motorway car against a town car? My N57 has done 30k in the last 2yrs and is now on 91k. Water pump has just started getting noisy, a dodgy bearing, everything else... touch wood.. is sweet!
having removed the EGR is something like HARAKIRI!! First the EGR is used to the combustion temperature which helps to decrease Fuel consumption. Further more, the ECU needs a EGR actuator. I dont know how you feed the ECU with a EGR signal? The injection timing is also depending on the amount of EGR, especially at full load of the engine, where it uses EGR, it can cause higher in cylinder pressure, becasue the injection calibration map is based on EGR %'s.
I heard so much about N47 timing chains going bang that I went and did mine at 140k miles. it didn't need doing at all. wish I'd not bothered was such a ballache to do.
Have you ever heard of dropped cylinder liners/sleeves on N47? My coolant hoses are pretty pressurize/hard and my expansion tank has a small microscopic hole thru which is leaking coolant/steaming.
I have just purchased a e91. Done 20017 thousand miles and it still runs like a dream .took it to a garage to have it looked over.he said it's been well looked after for its age 2008 320 se touring and nothing wrong with the engine
Great job George, feel quite lucky to own the almost same model E60 as yours:) Thanks a lot for making these videos! Currently get more times to do some mods to my car by rewatching your videos.
Always have to laugh at these videos that have descriptions that say parts are guaranteed to fail at 100k, 150k, whatever miles. I have twp 2001 530D Tourings (manual with 173k and an auto with 170k miles) and they haven't had any of these faults. Oil change every 10k or so miles with premium oil and a premium oil filter, crankcase breather cleaned every other oil change. EGRs are clean and working, I recently opened them up when I had the covers off the front of the engine to change the water pumps on each. Belts changed when changing the water pumps for convenience sake. Had a turbo fail on the manual but this was down to the car sitting on forecourts for a year or so and the (non-BMW) dealer not doing a proper service despite what they told me. Only other non maintenance items have been air springs recently changed on both, left-hand engine mount on the auto recently changed and a split weld on the stainless steel exhaust section where it connects to the turbo had to be re-welded. An M57 properly maintained is pretty much bomb-proof it and the M50B20 I have in my 1993 520i Touring (235k miles) are two of the best and most reliable engines BMW have produced. Generally speaking the N47 is less reliable than the M57 and has problems with bearings and excessive timing chain wear two things that don't generally occur on the M57. Despite what it seems the N47 isn't a shortened down version of the M57 and you can't extrapolate issues/reliability from one to the other
Just had my Timing chain go on a MINI Countryman (2014), at 40mph, 54000 miles, even though it's had full main dealer servicing, so not limited to poor service history, or 100k mileage issue.
my 184bhp feels like a 125bhp mapped golf atm the moment im gonna do swirl flap delete, egr delete and dpf delete in 2 weeks once all the parts arrive and hope she feels better
Thanks for the video. I wish i had watched the video before purchasing the X1 at 156K kms. it seems i have lot of work on my hand. i do like to work on my cars so i will do most myself. i will watch your videos as i carry out servicing. i do have a question about the intake manifold. there is lot of soot deposit around intake manifold area. it seems it must be leaking out from intake manifold. should i just replace the intake manifold? or try to clean it and see if the rod is ok?
Hi, could you please tell me what is the difference between a bmw 318d and 320d. I have a bmw 318d n47 2013 and what to convert it to a 320d. People say it is just the tune that is different but when you remap a 318d it goes from 143bhp to 184bhp where a 320d is 184hp standard and goes to 230bhp. Nice videos
*Really* good video George, thank you for sharing. Personally I highly recommend switching the breather hose for an oil catch can. It is a fiddle to install, but so worth it. I now have the carbon build up that you talk about in another video under the injectors - looking for the video where you replace the injectors / strip the engine down, can't seem to see it (have found your excellent video on re-seating them)
@@GeorgeAusters Thanks for the really quick reply! I got it as a kit from eBay - it's a Mann Provent 200. The only place I could get it as a kit was Australia! Cost was £200+import fees. If I did it again I would buy the bits separately. Have done a video on it last week - the mounting plate was a pain to make up, but now that it's installed = massive peace of mind. Will edit up and share next week :-)
@@GeorgeAusters Yep - I'm going to supersede that - I installed it the wrong way round! And now have a proper mounting plate - the first install bounced around on the bonnet and made a racket.
Too add. Catastrophic engine damage from snapped timing chain. So , 6 weeks ago I was driving along as normal in 3rd gear doing 30. Car pops out of gear and turns itself off. I thought oh no I know what that is. Yes it was the chain but it wasn't just one chain oh no no , it was 2! Completely snapped with no prior warning! No rattles knocks nothing to indicate it was going to go. On further Inspection my ex bmw specialist told me it had cracked the cam carriers, smashed the cams, snapped the rockers! (Pics) after even further Inspection he told me that the clutch and flywheel were on there way out (no indication of this prior) the flywheel had been rattling and caused extra vibration into the engine and he said he thinks this is why it's snapped 2 chains. He has done 30 ! Yes 30!! N47 engines with chain damage or replacement and said he had never seen this before. All in all a bill of £2300!!! It's a 2011 F10 with 155k on the clock full service history every 11k maximum. Moral of the story BMW should have been sued for designing this engine so poorly! I will be returning to the trusty M57 soon enough.
Nice video! I have a question, I have a 11/2016 F31 LCI 330d and when I look up the intake manifold on realoem I dont see the rod part like I see with older versions of the engine/car. Am I to assume that its a different manifold and should not worry about this issue? Thanks in advance!
Good video mynonly gripe is that advising people remove the egr system. Its part of emission control system and should fail an mot if removed. Your on dodgy ground legally as well as it may invalidate your insurance as thats not maintenence its a modification. Have you declared it to jour insurers?
Hi mate just quick question I have a fault code saying glow plug control unit missing on two glow plugs would that be the unit or I put faulty glow plugs in

It was a so called goodwill from BMWs part, but my car is to old and milige to high.
How has it been treating?
@@motheongoepe56 I haven’t drive it, because I’m working out. But I changed the timing kit. But I no longer think too much about the issues. People stress a lot (too much).
Still going strong?
Yes, everything seems ok until now. But I did just 5.000km since I bought it. I’m planing on getting it remapped within a couple months, and possibly remove the PAF.
@Nice, i just bought a 520D last week it broke down on the highway on my way home from the dealership, towed it back there and they are currently fixing it
4:48 just to add some more advice. The high pressure fuel pump needs looking after by using decent fuel and getting a fuel filter change with a service.
My brother’s 318D just got its timing chain ripped. RIP 🪦
However my 118D has done 270000 km.
Great video, thanks. I just used it to replace my Tensioner/pully/belt set on my E90 N47 with 170k Miles on it. I too replace oil and filter every 5k.
Does this info correlate to the mini 1.6 n47?

BTW, when fault on glow plugs, DPF WON'T REGENERATE!
No prob!
I have a 2012 BMW 520d F10 and it’s done 220,000 miles and the timing chain is beginning to fail. It’s soon getting replaced. It’s amazing how long timing chains can actually go if the car is regularly serviced. 😮
Maintenence is key!
How did you diagnose that the timing chain needs to be replaced?

Yes they fail around 150K miles
How much did you spend on parts? Curiosity as I may go through some of your changes
EGR delete actually means lower coolant temps. Mine stays around 87-90 celcius
@@GeorgeAusters
Here there are two modifications at once, since collant does not get heated by EGR gases anymore, but in theory and practice there is more heat generated in combustion chamber and this may result in lower temp overall. Could be.
On my other car with renault F9Q engine after egr block the thermostat position at same temperature was higher than before egr removal. So this means the temp overall is not rising (the thermostat is taking care of that) but the heat produced is higher. (the Renault F9Q does not have egr cooler)
I recently got an E61 520D with quite some milage (270000km) in pretty good shape, everything working, no errors on ISTA-D, full service history with regular maintenance done only in dealership up to 250000km at a very good price.

By the way: It took me some time to realize that the crankcase breather became leaky.
Thanks man👍🏻
George, do you recommend replacing the water pump and thermostat while you're already there doing the crank pulley/harmonic balancer, drive belt, and belt tensioner? It would seem a natural time to get this done, but perhaps the cooling system is not very stressed being a diesel and the pump bearing lasts 200K miles rather than 100K. Would you choose to do it at say 120K if the pump was not weeping?
Well, it comes to the design when is about N47 because M47 can reach easly 250k miles on original timing chain and crankshaft pulley...
Good job ,George ,thanks for your advice.

It's done 91k of mainly stress free motorway cruising, with an occasional blast when fully warm to blow the cobwebs out 😂
That should be B57 engine
@GeorgeAusters No its defo an N57d30t1 verified by ISTA+
Any gauge on what parts go first on a motorway car against a town car?
My N57 has done 30k in the last 2yrs and is now on 91k.
Water pump has just started getting noisy, a dodgy bearing, everything else... touch wood.. is sweet!
DPF pressure sensor can also fail, EGR, oil cooler gasket, thermostat gasket.
Can you keep the EGR all in place BUT just block off the manifold hole and not get any codes?
Did u had to remap the car after removing the egr?
having removed the EGR is something like HARAKIRI!!
You need to have the car remapped so that it removes the error and lowers the temperatures
I heard so much about N47 timing chains going bang that I went and did mine at 140k miles. it didn't need doing at all. wish I'd not bothered was such a ballache to do.
Worth doing for peace of mind👍🏻

Just change the oil and filter Every 7000km. Do it yourself it's actually easy. Shouldn't be an issue with the timing chain
Despite what it seems the N47 isn't a shortened down version of the M57 and you can't extrapolate issues/reliability from one to the other
I'm going to look at an e91 320D ED this afternoon, its got 105k miles. Looks very well looked after and FSH. Should I be worried about timing chain?
I reckon my camshaft sensor needs replacing. Is there just one of these on the N47 engine? And where is this?
Just had my Timing chain go on a MINI Countryman (2014), at 40mph, 54000 miles, even though it's had full main dealer servicing, so not limited to poor service history, or 100k mileage issue.
Sorry to hear. How many oil changes has it had so far then?

Pretty much the exact same issues
Bro, what’s called the left tube where air go’s to the radiator?
Thanks!
Thanks buddy, much appreciated!
Nice video! I have a question, I have a 11/2016 F31 LCI 330d and when I look up the intake manifold on realoem I dont see the rod part like I see with older versions of the engine/car. Am I to assume that its a different manifold and should not worry about this issue? Thanks in advance!
Are the newer N47 (2014 onwards) still prone to the same problems or lesser now, heard the timing chain is made better
Still prone to failure, but lack of oil changes and start / stop is a big factor
I've been told it's the tensioner that is the problem and the latest tensioner is much better.
time chain normally starts doing noise before breaking up. most mechanics wont recommend changing it unless its going bad
Not all the time
Any video on the rocker cover gasket? Thanks
