- Doing this job all by myself has certainly taught me to be creative & resourceful... The gearbox install alone took me around 6hrs to get everything bolted securely in place!
When you don’t have the option of paying someone else to do a big job for you, the only option left is to get creative & put a ton of effort in 💪

I can't wait to hear that engine start! Awesome job!
Man you are the man! I did the clutch on my little honda the other day and already cursing & swearing at everything after 4 hours lol. can only imagine the hard work needed for something like this.. and most importantly, the patience and positivity through the whole thing! you sir are inspirational!
Honestly, the worst part about this whole thing is having to shimmy in and out from under the car. Well done mate! Calm and collected the entire time, but I can see the smile growing as you near the end. 🙂 I'll be tackling this job on an M550d, as well as replacing the head gasket. I might just pull the engine entirely, haven't decided yet.
That is a huge job to do on the drive with limited tools & equipment, credit due to you, good job
Alistair Powers
Serious dedication . Most would have wrote it off. At least you'll now know the motor is solid from here on out
Nearly there fella ,great achievement especially on ya drive 👍😊
Really take my hat off to you doing this the way you are. I had to subscribe!!
Great work again , you definitely have the correct temperament and aptitude for this job. Cheers for now
Legends say, someone has seen a dry and clean BMW motor housing without any oil stains ;)
Yeah, no, that's just legends. Some people say that 95% of all BMWs ever made are still on the roads. Others will object that the remaining 5% made it home. 🚥🛑
Fingers crossed for you mate after all this hard work.
Have to say, you have done a good job there, Garage would of charged a bomb to repair,
Evening nut job from my home in Spain 🇪🇸 We've just driven 1500 miles from Manchester to Sucina in the Mercia region of southern Spain. I couldn't wait to watch this video so I have now and what an episode it was too 👍🏻 I take my hat off to you Sir for doing such a fantastic job yourself changing a broken timing chain on that Beamer 😆 Most guys would of scrapped it or shelled out a ton of cash getting it fixed at a local garage 🙈 BMW would of changed a small mortgage for something that there design team caused in the first place lol 😂 Anyway because your doing it you'll know it'll be just right 👍🏻 Well done from Stevie in Spain 🇪🇸
You should replace conrod bearings after a timing chain failure, hats off for this job !
I wouldnt touch this in a workshop yet alone a driveway good job mate
Amazing, amazing job - and an even more amazing patience. Tomorrow - that is, Friday, March 17, 2023.. wow.. that's today already - I'm driving to get my "new" car - a 2012 F11 530d xDrive with 190kW N57D30O1 engine and auto slushbox, of course (no manuals for the xDrive - we're not audi, are we!). The car has 270 000 kms on the clock - and judging by the maintenance log which I checked when inspecting the car - the chain hasn't been changed, and even worse - the oilchanges have "strictly abided" by the BMW's 30 000 kms (or even exceeded that!). Which means I'm probably in for a similar job very soon. The chain doesn't rattle on cold starts - but who knows. Watching this video - I know I absolutely need a transmission jack/trolley/craddle/lift platform on wheels - otherwise I'll go mad - and one advice though - never ever lift the engine by the crank pulley, even slightly. The crank moves inside the engine (after all, the crank "floats" slightly on an oil film) - and such lifting may destroy the front/rear main seals - which even without such actions - are fragile pieces as is, not even talking about what such non-design stresses do to the crank bearings. Either way - you've got another new subscriber - from Latvia. I find the explanations very literate, simple and to the point. Well done!
Good job and commend you for getting stuck in on an obviously difficulty and complicated job.
You deserve 1 million Subscribers and a meet up with B is for Build!
this guy is God of DIY
Love the neat gasket job, so many people subscribe to the "mess is law" approach and utterly destroy things after
I admire your perseverance sir. Good job. Well done.
One word !!RESPECT!!.Waiting excited for the running video..
Most would have wrote that car off but the hard work is paying off. 👍
Well done mate almost there now let’s hear that motor run again
well done again m8, living up to your name, nuts for doing it on your drive by yourself, but you're saving ££££'s this way, top man!!
Excellent job! I was afraid how you will return back the transmission by yourself without help, but you managed it very well. Thanks for sharing this great video and tip about tilting the engine. Waiting for next video, all the best!
Fantastic work mate, just fantastic.
Don't even drive a BMW but this has got me proper rooting you sort this out mate .
Consider yourself lucky that you don't ! They are notoriously troublesome.
F For
Trust me mate , vauxhall's are no better but a lot cheaper to fix .
Simply stunning on a car like this! Hats off to you can’t wait for next cylinder head! 😀
Subscribed, brilliant videos mate thanks for the uploads cant wait for the next one 👍
Looking forward to the big start! Great job
Gearbox done by one man. You are awesome bro!!
Credit to you on your own on your drive. Nice man ..
Slow and steady dude your getting there I just pray 🙏 the thing starts and runs good
Unbelievable job you’re doing!
final stretch ! incredible : )
Good job and weather is with you
All going smooth
Great video, well done mate.
Well done. Impressive work.
Respect!
Respect! Best regards from Poland.
You are just amazing
Amazing work sir
Great job and thanks for sharing your experience. I would also do the gearbox oil while your at it
Respect for your hard work! 👌
Moral of the video will be: 1) Dont give up you can do it....
2) Don't buy a BMW they have chain problems. :)
All cars have. The suggested BMW oil change intervals on these were 30 000 - which is insane. Those who abide by these - are very likely to encounter this "joyful experience".
HELLO AGAIN MY BOY, I'LL SAY AGAIN, WELL DONE! I KNOW IT'S NOT EASY, FAR FROM IT. BUT YOU'VE MADE IT LOOK LIKE IT! I LIKED THE ARGUMENT, YOU HAD WITH THAT COM-ENTER. ABOUT THE CHAIN MEASUREMENT. YOU SAYING , YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT MM'S, AS YOUR DEALING WITH MEASUREMENTS ALL DAY LONG! YOU CAN TELL ME TO MIND MY OWN BUSINESS. AND I WILL UNDERSTAND. BUT I WOULD GUESS THEN, THAT YOU ARE ETHER AN ARTITEC OR A SURVEYOR. TAKE CARE. AND DON'T RUSH THE JOB!
That is a well good job Mate! Me personally will never do it on my driveway. Great job!
This is nuts.
Fantastic and to think you’ve done a lot of the work from under car and with no real lifts. Gives us hope that we too could do this if we had to.
Well done on this ☝️ I just changed my timing chain , camshaft sensor and crank shaft sensor and to say it cost a lot of money is an understatement 😫
really appreciate sharing this series. I am in a similar situation to where you were at start of this project with my 2012 Jaguar XF S 3.0 D V6. it started with a knocking sound. after loads of time I got to extension oil pan (they have two) to find one of the con rod bearings is almost gone and scratched the crank and rod journal a bit. I now have to decide either jut sand the crank, check the clearance and put it back together or take out the transmission just to be able to replace or repair the crankshaft. I can see many similarities on my project beyond having the same gearbox. There are loads of information online to lower my motivation as they say in best case the car will run for few thousands miles but watching your video gives me energy to finish the project but I'd appreciate to have you comment after finishing all this.
Hi there, yes it sounds like you have a decision to make with your crankshaft then... I suppose it’s a judgment call depending on how bad the scoring on the crank/rod is? In my opinion this transmission is pretty straightforward to drop, there’s just a bunch of other bits to remove to get to it, plus the ‘awkwardness’ of safely supporting it to drop it out. I won’t recommend anyone copy my method, as you could definitely hurt yourself if not done properly - but I’ve proved it can be done if properly prepared 👍
I do love V6/V8’s but there’s always 2x the major components to factor into maintenance/repairs when compared with straight/flat/boxer engines 👍
@@Nut_Job. thanks for sharing. how difficult was removing the head? did you have to remove turbos, egr, etc.? also, do you have an estimation of total time the whole project took and a ball park figure of all expenses other than your time?
I removed the EGR & drained the coolant from the engine block. The exhaust manifold comes off with the cylinder head, but the turbo can stay put if you want. The DPF gets in the way of the exhaust manifold bolts at the back which is why I removed them together 👍
I’m currently around £650 but I’ll cover time & costs once the whole job is completed 👍
Amazing job, I wish I had the willpower to do something like this :)
A great congratulations on doing this HUGE job yourself :)
Am I correct, that the timing chains on this BMW are at the BACKEND of the engine? That is why you had to remove so many things, gearbox, drive shaft etc...
Recently, my 2009, W204, c180, 124,000 mile car, the timing chain skipped highly worn, broken teeth, camshaft sprockets, by about 70 degrees. I assumed the worst, bent valves, etc... I got the code, P0017 (same as you, camshaft correlation incorrect, so initially I replaced the 2 camshaft position sensors, but no joy).
I removed the top cover, replaced JUST the 2 timing sprockets, did a compression test, the front cylinder was about 75psi, but the back 3 were about 100 to 150psi. I thought that was good enough, reassembled, and it started. I was truly shocked, because same as your car, it would crank, but would never fire/start.
Before the engine started, I had already accepted, in my mind, I would have to remove the head, and replace the valves.
But even then, I think my job would have been much easier, because the timing chains are at the FRONTEND of the engine. I wouldn't have had to touch the gearbox, or the drive shaft.
This was the biggest job I ever did on a car, and I was extremely apprehensive, since my profession is computer engineer, IT consultant. But, after watching about 20 UA-cam videos I gained enough confidence, to have a go. In the worst case scenario, bent valves..., a mobile mechanic quoted me £3000 pounds. Doing it myself, the parts cost me about £160 pounds.
Nice.
Your doing a great job, me personally, I would have left the transmission off until the head is refitted and timed up
I'd have been inclined to get the chain on, make sure it starts, then put everything else back - that way not time wasted if it's not right. Great effort though - 10/10 for doing this and sharing it with us. Fantasatic job so far.
Don’t worry, I have supreme confidence in the work I’ve done... 😬😂
We’ll see in the end I suppose 👍
Nice job, dont forget the transmission oil :)
Well done you - what a job... and all on your own. Hats off! Any idea what caused the chain to fail? Rather interestingly, after a recent oil change (with “official” VW/Audi oil), my Audi 2,7 diesel broke its timing chain.
Are you replacing/refurbishing your injectors? Now would be a good time. Old, dripping injectors could be the cause of major engine failure - hope you’re checking that out on the BMW.
I am loving this series watching you repair that great car. As another has said, great ingenuity with the gearbox installation.
One question, you’ve installed the new chains, there’s no head yet, what happens to the chain when you rotate the engine from the crank to align the flywheel/torque converter bolts? Have you put something through the top of the chain to stop it falling down into the engine?
100% BRAVO !!!! 😁😁😁😁
good video well done doing it yourself 👍 More cake decorating practice at the start i see you love it 😂😂😂
Would love to know where I can buy that special tool for the crank pulley!
Great series on the BMW. If you keep up this kind of content you will become a widely known youtuber. Glad you keep in the mistakes and great tips. Ps any chance you could give a ruff breakdown of the end cost. Best of luck.
Cheers Christopher 👍
Yes, once the car is alive I will cover everything I had to buy & my total bill 👍
Ouch !! I bet you wished you had bought a e39, the best 5 series BMW ever made in my opinion, still a great video, thank god I will never have it to do as I made the smart move and bought a e39 !!
What happened to the bm after the issue with the main bearings?
What do you intend on working on after it’s all back up and running? I need my Nut Job fix!
Is it possible to set timing on the chain with bottom end assembled? Do those bolts need thread lock? Do you use torque tool?
Wow big job well done your car had any problems with autobox or servicing
Any updates on the cylinder head soon? Doing the same job myself on an e61. On the m57tu2 you tighten first to 80nm. Then loosen all bolts and tighten them to 50 nm one by one, that means loosen and then retighten before moving to next bolt. Now you are ready to tighten twice 90 degrees. Have done this once on mine. Now I am waiting to see how it goes with yours before I tighten the last time 90 degrees🙂
For the N57 cylinder head it’s 70Nm, loosen then 50Nm, then 120°, then another 120°
I’ll be doing it this weekend... 👍
Please put in description how many km/mi is on this chain!?
Ingenious method to lower and raise the gearbox with the jacks and bricks. How among hours do you estimate you've spent on the job?
A lot... I’ll work it all out for the final part 👍
Where is the Video for engine re-build crank maim bearing shell I am waiting
Don’t forget gear box oil 👍👍
Cracking job. I have the 2.0 4cyl N47! No issues yet. But will consider doing this once I hear a rattle. Did I miss the head back on vid?
Head isn’t on yet mate... coming soon 👍
Head isn’t on yet mate... coming soon 👍
👨🔧👍💪💪💪
Wow - Who needs Ed China!!! atb snack
When putting the bolts back in was it torque by feel of hand?
If I’m being honest I use the torque wrench for what I class as ‘important bolts’ and tighten by feel for others...
For example, things with gaskets really need to be torqued correctly imo, and like the flywheel + torque converter bolts - I used a torque wrench on those.
That’s just me though folks, not best practice but it’s what I do in all honesty
How are you feeling about it? Are you now glad you done it yourself? Is it easier than you thought?
I bet one of them skateboard things you lie on would have came in handy.
Yes, a little wheelie/dolly board would have been great 😀
My neck, arms & shoulders are very tired...
👌👌👌🙏🇮🇳
I am expecting head install part and car running
The only problem is febi parts-not so reliable
Looking forward to the big fire up now, question tho does your mrs not mind the oil on the drive and dont say u didnt get any anywhere cmon man 😂, and u must have some massive hairy bollocks to tackle a job like that on your drive on your back respect to you sir 👍🏻
😂😂
Not sure how to answer that one...
She ain’t seen the oil yet, until I move the car.... 😬😬
Nut Job 😂😂your in trouble m8......oh great idea for the video after next, the mrs reaction to the state of her drive 👍🏻good luck m8
How much were those two proprietary tools you had to get?
I only paid £20 👍
That was unexpected. I thought they'd be at least that each.
Where is part 5 of this series, what happened next, did it failed?
BMW 530d BROKEN TIMING CHAIN: Final Part - Rebuild & Start-up!

Everything went fine! 👍😃
What is this, my e39 530d has still original timechain and I dont plan to change it, it has 390000 km now, the newer the car the bigger the junk
A bit too much lube for my taste , but nice way to spend your holidays
Realy dangerous
