So BMW decided to use a technology (chains) that is supposed to give longer service intervals (but doesn't) and make the task orders of magnitude more difficult by hosting the timing gear at the rear of the engine. All the relative negatives of the belt, plus a few more layers of difficulty.

In your timing kit there is a puller for the fuelpump sprocket. No need to loosen the pump! There is no timing on the pump. The mark only show where the key is for aligning it on the shaft.
You can use the tool in your special timing tool set to remove high pressure pump sprocket while timing cover is on and break it loose . Instead of taking pump bolts out
Yeah I kept wondering what he did that, but then it clicked. Some people won't have the locking kit with that extractor, and they'd use a normal bolt to lock the flywheel, etc.

I’ve been a lifetime BMW fan and repair / Service technician but my love for BMW’s has gone down the pan. All of this work to change a timing chain is not acceptable.

About the cylinders 1 and 4 top center - as you blocked the flywheel doesnt they always be in that position for sure? I mean is ot possible to block the flywheel in incorrect position? Does is have more than one hole where you can push pin in? I just wonder why why need to make sure about the cylinder position after blocking the flywheel
Is engine removal just more convenient if one doesn’t have a fairly high lift? A few videos on UA-cam show engine remaining in bay and transmission removed for chain access and assembly
If you have a lift and transmission jack then you can do it with the engine still in the car but it’s so much more comfortable with the engine out of the car
So you take out the old chain and put on the new one, after putting on the new chain, is there anything that needs to be adjusted so that there is no problem with the ignition or the piston does not hit the head or there is no slow ignition, can someone explain to me because I did not understand good in the video, and whether something needs to be adjusted at the gearbox after the machine is put back together
I didn't really check to see if someone pointed this out already, but the 2 black parts in the top left and right side of the locking set are made for the fuel pump sprocket removal. No need to bash at it with a mallet (even a plastic/soft one). Great work nevertheless!

I am thinking about doing the serpentine belt and associated pulleys cause that is a little squeaky now and the belt is defo needing doing, but this job is way beyond me despite how well you've documented the process, and figure it may be too much money to throw at a 210k miles machine.
Hi George, when you moved the crankshaft by 45degrees did turn the locking tool clockwise or anticlockwise. I turned my locking tool anticlockwise to align the locking tool, so the 10mm bolt could be bolted. I have the fuel pump on the mark and the camshaft marks lined up. Turned the engine and it locks in a certain position. Any ideas. Thanks Paul
Hi Scott, the crankshaft holding tool which is bolted the the side frame of the engine, throws the crankshaft timing off. It's usually common practice to lock camshaft, crankshaft, and fuel pump timing together to ensure there is no movement. BMW are obviously trying to confuse the DIY mechanic. The best way to achieve this is to put a long Philips head screwdriver into cylinder 1, turn the crankshaft until cylinder 1 & 4 are at the highest position. The camshaft marks should also line up. Before i take the engine out and dismantle it to figure out why it wont start i wanted to ask you if you know or have heard of the sypmtom my car has. Initially i thought the piston may have siezed but I can turn the crank about 3/4 turn and it stops there. i can reverse the turn and same thing happens after about 3/4 turn. so pistons are not seized but something is stopping the engine from turning the full circle. i was wondering if you have heard anything like this before. i heard no noise when i stopped the car that suggests something is broken inside. i would appreciate your help. Hi George, very helpful video. Just rebuilding my N47C20A on my 2011 Mini SD. Why is the high pressure pump timed do you think?. When I locked the crank with the tool at 45 degrees ATDC my fuel pump sprocket mark was pointing at 7 o'clock as opposed to the mark which is around 8 o'clock. It's was probably one tooth out. My chains were perfect and the cams were timed spot on. I’ve been quotes no labour costs for this but clutch and flywheel @ circa £600. Engine rebuild has been expensive! I searched for you after watching the vid as you are quite local to me! Didn’t know if you fancied a project 😂
I don’t have the time or space to take on another project at the moment mate!
is the procedure with B47 engine (instead of here shown N47) any different? If so, in what exactly? Thank you, great video!
Hi George, i have been watching your videos while i try to repair my X1 N47 engine. your videos are quite thorough and i enjoy them. i have a question about my car. I reside in town called Bunbury in southwest of Western Australia. My car wouldnt start after i turned it off at my friends house. its a MAN transmission.
Regards
Vish
Sounds like timing chain snapped
Why hit pump off when the kit u have has the sproket removal tool?
To show people who don’t have the tool how to remove👍🏻
the later n47 engine use the different crankshaft locking tool, no longer 45 degree after TDC
Hi George, very useful video!, Do you know off hand what size the top tensioner bolt is? I have tried a 22mm but doesn't fit and a 24mm fits but is rounding off the bolt, can you confirm it's a 23mm?
I am working with the engine still in the car due to where i live and accessibility problems so very difficult working blind.
Some manufactures use different sizes so i'm not sure.
One of the reasons why I decided to remove the engine, makes things much easier.
@@GeorgeAusters Fair one, i live in rented accommodation with no gardens on a 30 degree hill so engine crane would be rolling off down the hill. Thanks for the reply, looks like i'll have to buy a 23mm socket.
@@stephenbarnes5341 Makes sense then!
Thanks for loading this informative video 👌👌
Hello George,I live in Spain Ibiza and I'm a mechanic here.I have a BMW X1 sDrive 18d 2013 N47D20C.It came to me as it has dumped all its oil into the exhaust thus smoking and depleated the engine oil.Thinking a problem with turbo, checked the intercooler for oil and did'nt find much oil in the intercooler.seams to be breathing heavy.Wondered if you could possibly have any advise please.Strange the car has only done 70k km.
season best wishes to you and your family.Regards Doug
I am confused, it states on internet my Bmw X1 e84 2014 diesel has a timing chain, but i have a timing belt at the front? Is the cam belt a timing belt? Amateur enquiry.
That’s your drive belt, not cam belt
@@GeorgeAusters Lol okay, cheers 👍👍powers the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor,
My fuel pump on mark , cranshaft on tdc. I miss one step I DONT DO 45 deg :( this is big mistake?? Pressure good. Help please .
Hello, I have a 320D 2009 and have a rattly chain. Is there anywhere in the south east that I can get it replaced at?
I'd recommend looking for a BMW specialist
@@GeorgeAusters thanks. I've been advised that if I plan on keeping the car then I should pay extra and have the whole engine rebuilt, what are your thoughts on this?
Please how much did all the kits cost you and can I get them on internet?

Hi George thanks for the information sorted my mini following your guide went well, thanks again your a star 🌟
Great to hear!
Looking good. Mine is done now. It feels and sounds almost as good as when I got nine years ago.
Yep and at least our minds can be at rest for a bit haha
Hi, how much did it cost you mate ?
Most garages will charge you around £1000 or £1500 for timing chain, clutch and flywheel
@@GeorgeAusters Thank you for your prompt reply mate. Appreciate it.
George Austers My 320d is going to a Bmw specialist Monday for the timing chain, clutch and flywheel to be replaced, £1887 altogether 🤢
Great video. Looking forward to the refit. Just wondered. Why you slackened the fuel pump rather than use the sprocket removal tool that's in the locking kit? Screws into the fuel pump sprocket and it simply comes away. From other videos I've seen without the need to slacken the pump. As I say. Great informative videos. Not at all a critisism. It's great what you do. Just for my peace of mind. Cheers. Keep up the great work. 👍
Yeah I realised that’s what it was for half way through but thought it would be a good idea to show people how to remove it without the tool👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters I see 😂 can't wait for the chain install. I notice when you took the sump & cover off. No gaskets! I have bought the chain kit (FAI) and a gasket set. Has the a sump gasket and timing cover gasket!! Think they are maybe an after thought or upgrade? Not sure what you will be doing. Sealer? Cheers 👍
Hello george
Help full video thank you so much 😊😊😊
Great work 🎉😊
Hello mate. Answer me, what could damage if you turn the engine to the other side? Counterclockwise.
Can cause the timing chain to slip if you’re not careful
@@GeorgeAusters Thank you very kind
I have replaced the chain but now my rear main seal keeps leaking. I've changed the rear main seal and still out coming out between transmission and engine. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is the timing cover misaligned or something? What's the tightening sequence?
Did you use sealant or the gasket on the timing cover?
It didn't have a gasket it had RTV. I used RTV silicon. Is there any way that the timing chain cover isn't centralised or something?
mines a march 2005 N47 with 135000 miles chain not done yet. Not sure i should sell it or get it doen.
Yours will be an M47
Hi there can give me some help Information. I have a n47d 1.6 engine 60k full service history. I have a rattle appear on cold start for 2 to 3 second . Does that indicate tensioner going thanks
Yes the if oil changes are done as bmw state the changes are too far apart best change oil every 5000 miles. These engines run really hot.. Changing tensioner won't help. Oil is problem.
@@johnallan1134 Hi there now the the rattle on startup has appeared would changing over stop it. I no long BMW service intervals I normally service my car's every 4k on other vehicles I serviced it recently still there. Do BMW have a recall on these problems as it seems commen
I have done it many times on bmw N47 and N57 without any locking tools
Hi there do you have to lock high pressure fuel pump?
very nice video. how many hours you need to change timing chain, included extraction and return engine.
No more than one day if the garage has appropriate tools, heard from FB group
Hi George , any idea if the timing chain problem has been rectified by Toyota in the 161 avensis ?
No difference
Thats me f**ked then thanks for the reply 👍
If you want to keep the car then get the timing chain kit replaced with clutch and flywheel and it’ll last 300k miles easy
Hi George, do you fix for clients? My partners in the NHS and her timing chain just gone on series 1 63 plate 118D pretty sure N47 model. Ringing locally to me no garages interested.
I’m not doing jobs on other cars at the moment sorry
Hi mate good work but I have a question can this job be done without taking the engine out ?
Yes
Much easy and comfortable if engine is out
Yep👍🏻
How ?
Hello guys
what damage can be done to the engine when the chain has jumped or snapped?
Broken rocker arms - bent valves - bent rods
@@GeorgeAusters thanks for youd reply
Why do I have to slacken off the high pressure pump?
Hey George, thanks for your content. I have to do the same job on my 2010 320d E93. One question about the chain: is the quality of FAI really the same Like OEM? Cant belive it, while the price is so much lower than the bilstein or OEM. Thanks for your answer!
Chains are the same, made by JWIS
عمل جيد انا متابع من المغرب تحياتي 👍
Great Videos mate. Really helped me to change mine today. Isn't as hard as it looks once engine is off the car. How many miles do you plan on putting on those chains before replacing again.
Glad it’s helped mate! I don’t plan on replacing these again 😂 As long as I get 200k miles from the car I’ll be happy👍🏻
George Austers Nice. Looking forward to more maintenance videos. Stay safe man.
hi mate, where's the camshaft on this engine located please? thanks
At the top
@@GeorgeAusters top of the rocker cover at the end ?
Hi George, very helpful video. Just rebuilding my N47C20A on my 2011 Mini SD. Why is the high pressure pump timed do you think?. When I locked the crank with the tool at 45 degrees ATDC my fuel pump sprocket mark was pointing at 7 o'clock as opposed to the mark which is around 8 o'clock. It's was probably one tooth out. My chains were perfect and the cams were timed spot on. It ran fine before but I have only had it a couple of months and have only just got round to doing it, DM flywheel was the main reason for stripping it. Perhaps it'll surprise me when it's back together mate.....Cheers Rich
Hi George. I too am doing a mini 2015 same engine and i noticed the same with pump timing mark. did you have any issues as i can see why its timed.
sorry rich i mean.
Why were you changing the timing chain?
Preventative maintenance and to show how it’s done👍🏻
Thank you very much sir . use full video.
