    News of the Times Episode 312 | 1842
    It is 1848 in the mining town of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. 72 year old Tamar Edwards has gone missing from her small dilapidated cottage within the village. Her son, who has just recently reunited with his wife, has moved her into his mother’s cottage and explains his mother’s disappearance as her having gone to visit in the next parish. The couple sleep in his mother’s bed.
    It is payday and Edwards, Tamar’s son, must make the trip into the next town to pick up his wages. His instruction to his wife is to not look under the bed. The wife consults with her friends and neighbours who think she should look under the bed in which she and her husband have been sleeping. A gruesome discovery awaits. From here, accusations fly as to who was actually responsible for the body under the bed.
    We take a look at the disappearance of Tamar Edwards in this crime story from 1848 rural Wales in today’s episode of Sinister Saturdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

      Thank you - that is really kind! 🙏It is A LOT of reasearch, as you say. There is a lot of crime, but the trick is finding stories that are different , unique and interesting with a human element! There are lots of stories of drunken sprees ending in murder. we try to avoid those. There are lots and lots of stories of infanticide - we try to avoid those too. Sometimes we start what sounds like a good story, start tracing the story and realise 70% through that it is actually not a very interestng story and we then have to stop and start all over again. For example, we had a doctor story where he killed his wife and his two previous wives had unexpectedly died as well - but the story was only pages and pages and pages of medical testimony. the doctor in question, when he realised he was caught, took poison himself, There was no human element in the story, so we could not pursue it. Sometimes, we try to mix things up with a slightly differnet angle - not always successfully! We try to keep things fresh and we try to, mostly, follow smaller stories or stories that are not remembered today. Thank you for your interest! We have one team member who is chained to her chair!😉

    Watching again because!.. I have questions, how could Richard and his Wife endure the smell of a decaying corpse and sleep it off. His poor mother lived to a ripe ole age of 72 in the 1800s to be killed by her son. Richard and his rambling claim of innocence is just crazy. What a tale. Thanks again Robin and Team

      In a place like that smells would have been commonplace, people did not wash clothing and bedding much, cooking smells would have permeated everything and the smell of open sewers etc. Add to all that the smell of the coal dust and men fresh from the mines.

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +2

      That is a great question! 👍And a question that came up in court! One of the witnesses said there was a slight smell, but hmmmmm? It would obviously begin to decay eventually where that would not just be a slight smell....we think @janetpendlebury6808 may have come up with the answer. 👍 It was a big mining town with it own unique smell - possibly that helped cover it up at the time. It is interesting, As we say, it did come up in the court trila, but only briefly - not as a main point. 🤔Thank you - great question!🙏

    The moral of the story is; if someone strongly orders you NOT to look under a bed without giving you a valid reason why, DEFINITELY LOOK UNDER THAT BED!!
    What an AWFUL shock for the poor ladies when they discovered the unfortunate Tamar's body!!
    I wouldn't be surprised if Wretched Richard HAD committed the first murder!! It's a shame that he wasn't convicted for that one!! The fact that he THREATENED to murder his father-in-law and more relatives when arrested, says it all!!
    I wonder what happened to Margaret Edwards, and their poor little boy?!
    GREAT video, as always, Robin!! ❤💞🤗👏👍💕

      @@newsofthetimes Exactly!! Why leave a dead body under their bed, allowing it to decompose?! At least GET RID of said body before decomposition sets in!!
      Also, Richard had the AUDACITY to blame his wife and mother-in-law for the murder!! Oh yes, he whacked his mother, but HE hadn't killed her as she was still groaning afterwards!! Hmmmm!! VERY suspicious!!🙄🙄

    This was a "despicable," man who murdered his mother and tried to implement his wife and other family members for it. I believe Richard murdered that Irish woman two years prior even though he was acquitted. I definitely believe he murdered his mother and I'm thrilled he paid the ultimate price for it, period! Do you know whatever happened to his wife and children? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations, photos and videos, as well. Take care 🦋

      Yes - he was a bad 'un! The whole, "sleeping over the dead body of my mother in law" , is an unsual twist! Sadly, we do not know what happened to the wife and child...possibly she inherited the hut? It was a very poor rural mining town - she owould have had very few options... Thank you, as always, for your kind support!🙏

    Seriously! The smell must’ve been horrible. It baffles me that the wife couldn’t smell it. So weird. Seems her curiosity is stronger than her sense of smell.

    Did Richard never hear of “Bluebeard”? Also why did he leave the body under the bed! Surely he had some time to remove and hide the body. Honestly if there wasn’t a poor innocent woman murdered the whole thing would pass for a farce.

    • @newsofthetimes
      @newsofthetimes  Місяць тому +2

      Well said! It was almost farcical! It was a very small tight commuity with houses on top of each other. He was afraid that he would be discovered / seen if he buried the body. But, of course, eventually the vast number of flies would have attracted attention. His attempts to throw suspicion on his wife and family were also almost comical. An interesting story - one to tell the children - "let me tell you the mother in law under the bed story...😉

  • @claresmith9261
    @claresmith9261 Місяць тому +2

    I feel his story might be true because his wife couldn’t live with her father and previously Richards mother had thrown her out so she had a good motive for killing the mother also she definitely would have smelled terribly
    No one would be that stupid to put a body under the bed and in a one bedroom house of course his wife would look under the bed , she could well have told this story to neighbours making him guilty and knowing if he’s convicted she’ll get the house also he had nothing to lose as he was being hanged so why lie
    Today it would be investigated far more thoroughly

      All our stories are true - they come direct from the papers. 📰 The area was quite impoverished. We did a biopic on the incredible Dr William Price who described in detail the poverty, and disease, he saw in rural Welsh mining towns. Hmmm - so you think possibly she did indeed kill the MIL and that he was innocent? Agreed, of course she would look under the bed! 👍And, she quite possibly did look under the bed first, quickly try and figure a way out of keeping herself from being accused, and gone running to neighbours to act all surprised. We would agree with you that she probably knew more than she said. She knew the MIL< who had hounded her out previously, and would probably know that something was not quite right with his story. Hmmmm,🤔🤔

We do explanations and synopsis in between the different news articles. We also do it this way so that you, the listener, hear exactly what the public at the time were seeing / hearing.
