    News of the Times Episode 311 | 1775 & 1848
The killing of the mother, Matricide, has historically been considered one of the blackest of crimes.
In today’s episode we look at two cases where the adult offspring has planned and carried out the murder of their respective mothers with chilling coldness.
Our first case from 1775 involves a single mother who runs a girl’s school. Her son, who lives at home and does not seem to have held a viable job, resents being reprimanded or told what to do. Just as she goes up to make his bed, the horror begins.
Our second case from 1848 involves a very sad case of elder abuse which seems to have increased in intensity until a fatal blow followed by an attempt to burn the body by her 50 year old daughter.
Two terrible cases of murdering the mother is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

These were two of the most "heartbreaking," horrific cases of despicable people who murdered their mothers. First case, William wasn't worth the time of day, to think he murdered his mother because she told him to get out of bed and go to work.Thrilled that he received the death penalty. Second case, I can't comprehend how a jury couldn't come to a unanimous guilty verdict of the heinous way that Mary viciously physically abused her elderly mother over time and again and finally murdered her. And then Mary is free to live this was a failure of justice in the true sense of the law, period! Do you know if Mary inherited financially from her mother's murder? Also, whatever happened to Mary's teenage daughter? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋

We agree! How DID she manage to get away with it?? The daughter was in service, probably since age 14 or so, as was common. We do not know if Mary inherited. Incomprehensible that the jury did not convict her! There was the arson attempt too - a very serious crime back then - memories still of the London fire. Not to diminish the terrible treatment of the mother. Shocking and upsetting. 😔

Interesting to hear of a crime from Shropshire, having been born in Shrewsbury & knowing Bridgenorth quite well, now living in Estonia, hearing the case brought back memories of my childhood to mid twenties in the County through the late 1950s , 1960s to mid 1970s, it's surprising to learn of something now but not known of before of the Counties macabre history

Interesting! We do a lot of research to try to find the unusual stories (not just drunken night turns into murder spree - there are a lot of these) and we also, try to get out of London and look for stories around the country. There is more to the UK than London! We chose these as they are quite unusual as murders go. Thank you! Good to hear from you! We sometimes do episodes specific to areas - we will see if we can do an episode of stories from Shropshire in the future. 😉Thank you again!🙏

HMMMPH!! It sounds like the ONLY labour that William EVER did was to murder his poor mother!! The entitled, lazy lump wasn't even repentant either!!😡😡
Mary sounded like a bitter, resentful woman!! She probably had a VERY difficult relationship with Ann, and may have felt her mother "owed" her!! Still, what Mary did to Ann was DISGUSTINGLY cruel and evil!!
I wonder what happened to Mary's 16 year old daughter?!
Thanks for another BRILLIANT video, Robin!! 🤗💕👏👍💞❤

Thank you🙏Glad you liked the show! The 16 year old daughter was in service! So it sounds like the papers assumed, initially, that the upset between the two (Mary and Ann), was due to her pregnancy before and that this is what had caused the ill will. But actually, the mother had quite a bit of money but still seemed to live a life of piety. The daughter does not seem to have received any of the money and it is believd that this was the real reason for both hating her mnother and killing her. We found it so odd that the jury did not convict her?! How bizarre! And setting fire - arson - was a HUGE offence at the time. People still remembered the huge London fire. There was actually oil found on the pillow the mother slept on - how premeditated is that? Very strange!🤔

@@newsofthetimes YES!! How on EARTH did Mary get away with ARSON AND MURDER?! It's UNBELIEVABLE!! I also hope she didn't receive a penny of the money she murdered her mother for!! I honestly hope it went to her poor daughter, who, I hope, disowned her murderous mother for good!!

@@nadiabrook7871 It is interesting. The law back then seemd, in general, to be quite black-white. This case seems to be an anomoly.🤔

@@ChronicleofTheTimes2024 True!! I wonder what became of Murderous Mary herself?! I'll bet she moved away from the area where she lived, as I'm sure her neighbours etc wouldn't exactly give her the warmest of welcomes had she returned home?!
