Hiya everyone. Just wanna say I appreciate all of your contributions in the comment section of part 1 - some really interesting points that made for a good read. As mentioned in the video I may revisit some fitness bits soon, but will always throw in some random videos on random topics like this one, just for my own sanity really. Enjoy the vid people 🤙
its getting unrealistic too .. give up and work hard in your teens and twenties and you could be making 10 million a year with a loft appartment in NYC yeah , you could ,you really could or you could sacrafice your youth and be nowhere near it and entirely unfullfiled and left wanting .
Chiropractic in a nutshell. Physios (me) try to have you not come back because you've done the work we've prescribed and healed yourself, chiros do a few joint manipulations that bring very short-term relief (if that) then book you in next week to do the same thing while never addressing the core weaknesses or deficiencies.
I don't believe this. What about people being born who will eventually grow up to have their own battles and need self help? There will always be people needing self improvement. Also you could say this about any industry, dentist fixing your teeth, hospital treating you, car salesman selling a car. That person might be okay today (new car, teeth fixed and no mental battles), but tomorrow their car might break down and their battles might continue.
@@staebsInteresting take you have, and you’re certainly not alone in thinking it. I actually am a UK registered Chiropractor, and like you, I believe that my job is to get my patients as biomechanically stable as I can, as quickly as I can, and then give them the tools to improve, via home exercises, that are prescribed in much the same fashion as you, and functionally assessed 1month to 6 weeks later. I’m sure my bank manager would love it if my patients all attended weekly for the rest of their lives, but that would be morally repugnant, ethically indefensible, and it’s not the way I’ve run my (successful) practice for the last 20years. I have no shortage of patients, GP and other health care professional referrals, and , yes, we have to pay the bills like everyone else, but I don’t personally know ANY registered chiropractors that would fleece their patients. (Apart from the moral questionability, to be generous, it’s not a good business practice. Nobody would refer, feel satisfied with their treatment, or even come back after being disillusioned.). I don’t think you could do that for long. At least, not in this country, where we’re pretty tightly regulated. I do understand that may not be the case in the rest of the world, though….
“Spend more time looking outside” - really resonates with me. Went through my own “self improvement” phase at 18. Spent days upon days consuming countless videos, books and podcasts. I barely actually changed my habits and honestly just felt worse about myself. Later I phased out the bullshit and started putting myself out there and just doing shit like solo trips etc. I learned much more, picked up hobbies and developed a real passion for life.
If you picked up some actual valuable info along the way then that’s ok too. It’s not a bad thing to want to learn even some very basic stuff. It’s when we start telling ourselves “I’m nothing unless I resemble this guru person” that it’s probably a waste of time
Usually those books and podcast (least the ones I read and listen to) will always encourage doing the work you are learning. For instance, if maybe you feel lonely, they will encourage you to also go outside and put yourself out there. I'm reading a book related to the topic of fear and how 50 cent has this trait of fearlessness (it isn't not having fear that is never going to be a thing). One thing brought up was how the ones who learn this are the ones who practice pushing through the fear instead of running away. An example would be when I fell off my skateboard going down a slightly downward hill while pushing too much that I was going insanely fast. My wheels caught my deck (the trucks that hold the wheels together will wobble if the speed is too much for it's tightness) and I fell. I was hurt for a few minutes but pushed on and still practiced since I wasn't hurt and still wanted to skate (also believing that stopping it while only slightly hurt was not a good excuse at all). I end up going down that hill again but without pushing the board so much. I pushed through the fear of having fallen off this hill I went down countless times and conquered it. I did it again two weeks later when the weather was better and my knees were healed up. There is a verse in Meditations by Marcus Aurelius that expresses this and I think he does a bit more throughout his journals. He tells himself to put the books down and experience life. Basically, don't confine yourself to just books. Reading, watching videos, hell even going on social media is fine. Just don't do it so much that you neglect so much other aspects of your life. While you are reading on how others have achieved success, you could be doing.
One of my favourite Instagram creators said, "self improvement is not the solution. Character development is where it's at". This video indirectly says the same thing, and i love it.
Amen to that, I aim to be 1% better everyday if I can through working out, trying out my hobbies, making sure I better myself, etc. It can be difficult maintaining progress, but that's part of it. Cheers!
Hi Joe. I'm 23 and have been watching UA-cam for more than 10 years. Maybe this is the best video I have ever watched. Thank you for sharing your beautiful mind and thoughts
Ive litterally found that you can become trapped by self improvement , you find yourself overthinking , video after video , and you dont take action its literally paralysing . so after this vid just quit them.
Worse yet, taking what was supposed to be useful info and then micro-managing every face-to-face interaction in your head instead of just being present and in the moment. My fiancée (a psychologist btw) used to hate when I did that. She’s like “just be yourself. Stop trying to manage people’s impression of you.” It’s as though I was switching roles and playing a different character every time I talk to someone else. 😂 Sounds crazy looking back.
Yeah I think the issue might be some just overload their head with information that they never act. Some I think will read but never actually reflect on what they just read. Some don't take it chapter by chapter and let it rest and practice. They will want as much as they can get now thinking they will get "better" faster. I don't just analyze the information but also what character the author might be expressing, the principals. When you read the same topic in a self improvement book, depending who writes them you might see some similarities. I read 12 Rules to Life and Psychology of Money and noticed the principals are common. You can apply the psychology aspect to investing and now you have something of a hybrid I would say. I read another book on investment and found principal comparisons with that to Psychology of Money. You see patterns and that is a principal or even a character trait you can decide if you want it or not. It was weird because I always read self improvement or Psychology books chapter by chapter or even half of it but stop if there is a new paragraph so I don't lose the information completely. I always try to reflect on it as well as my own experiences. I aim to learn so I can apply it to my life if it is something I decide in the end is good an beneficial. I only found out recently that people will just consume this information but not act on it. That scared me because I thought people read these books like I did. It's like with textbooks, you learn the lesson but then they give you exercise questions to do. Math lesson is explaining the rule, the formula. how it works, then it's "okay let's do a few practice questions so you can see it in work and remember it as well as understand how it works clearly."
I feel like you put a lot of things into words that I've been slowly learning and had in the back of my mind. My favorite thing was the whole: Stop caring what other people think of me and shift it to stop imagining that everyone else is always thinking of me. I think there is a lot of wisdom in that that probably tackles a lot of modern day low self esteem.
2000 years ago, Joe would genuinely be touted as a great philosopher. Carry on with all of this, please, it's so refreshing in the face of pretty much the entire internet.
@@panthersprung5161 But Joe isn't just giving life advice, he's offering insights into and observations of all sorts of ways of organising one's mind. Perhaps by modern standards he's more of a speculative socio psychologist than a philosopher, but then many of the renowned ancient "philosophers" didn't write about/study "the fundamental nature of reality and knowledge" (a good definition of philosophy) either.
"Spend less time looking in and more time looking out". As a full time single dad who sits at home nearly all evenings, i often find myself in this vicious cycle of introspection and over analyizing. Some of it may be attributed to my ADHD. This reptitive cycle has often led me to exhaustion, as well as how i find it difficult to put emotions into word. One of the reasons why i started training again (this time using the Push app, Thank you Delaney!) is because i got demons to fight, while also trying to get over a person i fell in love with. In my experience dealing with ADHD paralysis, and getting through challenging phases for the past months or more, hitting the gym again are one of the ways i can improve myself. As a 28 year old father i'm still young in some eyes, but i know from my own experience how dangerous "self improvement" can become if taken too far. Thank you for being so laid back while providing your perspective in a easy to digest. Your content is valuable and very often interesting ❤
This is one of the best improvements videos out there . No surprise the view count is low . No hacks, tricks, routines . Just pure common sense and life experience from a genuine man . Thank you for sharing mate , I truly appreciate it .
The part where Joe talked about how when you get trapped in the whole self improvement cycle, you end up creating this life where you're inner monologuing and narrating your life from one event to the next really resonated with me. I've found it best to be present and in the now with what I care about. Really great video.
The point about thinking about self improvement is so true. It’s so easy to get caught in the trap of planning/envisioning improvement, when in reality you just need to get out and start doing stuff.
The topic, the answers, the humility at the end. This has to be the best video I've ever watched on youtube. I have struggled with the thoughts you described for the past 8 months, and seeing somebody's point of view resonating so much with the anxiety I have about all of this helped me a lot. Your conclusions are just heartwarming. Just live life, have ambition but don't let it dictate your everyday thoughts, and enjoy every bit of human interaction you can have. Thank you Joe, I hope to get back a year later with this exact philosophy, and say I made it
I’m grateful for your vids and all the wisdom you’ve passed down to me bro. If you focus on self improvement too much, it creates anxiety, which I’ve found to be the case with myself at least. Some anxiety is good, as it gets you to do the things that you know you should be doing. However, a big problem arises when you’ve done all that you can do, and you still don’t feel like you’re enough, you never enjoy being present in the moment and never enjoy the journey itself, which is life. I’ve got the physique of my dreams and I’m constantly setting and hitting goals, but I find myself telling myself that I “should” or “must” do things, rather than reframing it into a playful “I want to hit this goal” or “I get to do this”. Maybe a video on this would help.
Fifty-two year old guy here finally trying to put on some upper body muscle after a lifetime of endurance sports. Love your videos, workout tips, observations, and especially the recipes. Keep 'em coming!
This is by far one of the most helpful videos I've ever watched. The no BS approach to 'self improvement' is a breath of fresh air in todays society. Thankyou.
I got burned out from self improvement after one of my favorite self improvement guys (Hamza) just started saying polarizing statements for the sake of views and money. At this point, I'm going to do my own thing instead of trying to become a generic hustle bro
Hamza really did become one with the radical hustle bros, he used to be a beacon of hope in the industry, a genuine guy who doesn't sell courses or talks down on women, just uplifts the bros, and now he's become all that and much more and much worse, pretty much one of the tater tots, such a downfall, we got this however, we can do this on our own.
Hiya Joe, I watched this and it gave me the courage to take a step back and look in. It’s helped me massively in realigning myself. Over the last few weeks I’ve watched this EOD. Big thank you dude.
I wholeheartedly agree - I got lost in the self-improvement trap myself. I made a video recently about 'Monk Mode' that seems to have gripped a lot of young guys, but I think like you said, instead of spending your 20s working, go out and experience the world and do stuff. You'll then have a far better idea of what it is you actually want to work on. Thanks for being sound.
Mate it's so interesting how you speak out of my brain what I think all day long but formulate it in a digestible way. Didn't learn anything new here but I liked the reassurance I recieved :D
Keep on doing what you’re doing….. Love the no nonsense down to earth approach… Resonates with me chap. Been watching your stuff for some time now. All good. Thank you
Bro honestly you speak some facts. It's funny because after your last video I actually realised I was in the self improvement trap and I started seeing self improvement as a result, not a goal. And evrything else you said in the video I have been realising in the last month. It was crazy to hear my exact thoughts on this video. Love your content bro, thanks 🤙
class video Joe, I’m thinking a lot more people are waking up to the work less way of life, you hit the nail on the head on realising what level of wealth actually makes you happy, if most people get out of the social media facade of more materialistic things = better life, people can truly find that they don’t need as much as they think to be happy…I’m saying this after changing careers and halving my income for more leisure time and less work related stress, I’m happier than ever.
You're such a great messenger in this field. Also, I just watched Ted Lasso for the first time and I can't stop seeing Jamie when I hear your dialect, lol.
I like the more abstract videos just as much as the fitness content. And you have made a great deal of fitness content. So this is like your Super Saiyan 3 mode. A natural evolution from a discussion about tracking macros and caloric deficit to a broader topic about why do we even want to be fit? And what makes us happier? I remember when you started these videos about "peak happiness." I enjoy these so much. They are more about quality of life and not just look at how shredded I am. I appreciate them because they show you aren't just another content creator finding ways to rephrase the same 5 topics you have done for years. It makes me feel like as your life has evolved, so have you. Wife. Baby. House. Keep doing your thing Joey D. You're the fucking man. 👏🏾💪🏾✊🏾
Too much internal investigation is the worst form of procrastination. Too much time wasted in thoughts, get to actually know yourself by doing things, either with others or solo Try new things, do something uncomfortable and find out who you are right now. If you find something you don’t like through that process, it’s lived experience rather than thinking you don’t like something
Self-improvement by all means is a category in which products are sold. A lot of what you've said revolves around the idea of just doing practical things. That's spot on, but it's actually quite difficult to learn new things and do things to “improve” - so what happens? People don't do it and they look for answers. Enter your “self-improvement” products (retreats, courses, classes, medicine, etc., etc.) In an attempt to be better I think we've confused efficiency with cutting corners - it doesn't work.
This is the first "self-improvement" video I've watched in a couple of months. Actually,, one of my new years resolutions was to stop watching these videos about certain topics that I "struggle" with and videos about how to become better in whatever kind of way. I realized that focusing on myself, focusing on "improving" just makes me feel like I lack in so many different areas in life. I, now, have to work on being easy on myself because this idea of improving myself has become such a big factor in my life. It's about finding your own path and getting certain basic things right, I think. Thank you for this video!
Shredbundy, I want to say you've always been in my top 3 favourite UA-camrs. Thank you for putting yourself out there brother, if I can grow a pair and just put myself out there, then I hope I can take inspiration from your style of content and create similar vibes through my videos. Much love from New Zealand
Thanks for this video, really needed to hear some of these points mentioned and explained clearly. As always, you have a way with getting to the point as simple and quickly as possible. Banging vid!
Just finishing uni. Was feeling really lost and unsure of myself. I definitely agree with the introspection stuff. This definitely felt encouraging. Thanks mate.
Top man Joe. I’ve found your channel in Covid times. I’ve binned most of the other channels I found around that time. Keep it up lad. Great physical and mental advice. 💪💪
Self improvement is focused on teaching the basics. Otherwise, where do you learn them? The curse of knowledge is powerful in these comments. Introspection answers the questions that you cannot find externally. The fundamental question that I believe most people are asking is why? Why do I care what people think? Why do I make promises and not keep them? Why can’t I commit? If you don’t do the internal work, how do you plan on fixing the problems? If you don’t know the cause, how can you find a cure? Just my thoughts. Great video. I’m a new follower. Love the workout stuff too
I feel like the self-improvement game can be a trap that impacts you from the day-to-day complexities of life. One should strive to be better on the daily but not to an extreme degree. Life is already tough enough, you don't need Instagram gurus telling you to completely revamp your life around 24/7.
yeah , agreed , ive been down this self improvement rabbit hole , you dont improve you legit just become a consumer of content and overthinking everything.
You're a cool and funny dude, and I appreciate your vids. Albeit, your long hair days were not my fave...but that doesn't matter. I appreciate you're ability to grow into your own self understanding. It makes the content way cooler.
Fiction, specifically Anime/Manga, really helped me become more interested and learn from characters. Some incredible stories can be found in them and they are fun 😊
Scary how you totally understand my thoughts before I have them lol You’ve got great ideas. I should do this. Eliminating sugar is helping. Love how you think. Cheers.
Yoooo I used the same blank canvas metaphor in a late night chat with my sister years ago and we still reference it to keep each other grounded 😁💖 cool. I knew you were a real one.
Mate thank you for this and the work you put into it I’m trying to do better in my life and being able to think clearly is so difficult listening to these self centred weirdos on the internet like hamza lol thanks for reminding us to pay more attention to the world, others around us and to remove unnecessary stress from trying to live a perfect life. Sending a lot of love: Another guy doing his best, having the ability to be grateful for the small things and also learning and figuring it out as I go along
There's a great video on big think channel about the pursuit of happiness and how to create an 'anti fragile' mind. The principle of that video is similar, saying that the pursuit of happiness should not be the focus but rather creating a mind and life that is not only resistant to 'depression' but able to bounce back when sad things (that will inevitably happen) occur in our lives. For me 'self improvement' has become this trap of information that seems to take centre stage, when in reality it should not be the focus (especially for someone like me in their early 20s) but rather a product of just growing up as is said in the video.
Hiya everyone. Just wanna say I appreciate all of your contributions in the comment section of part 1 - some really interesting points that made for a good read. Fifty-two year old guy here finally trying to put on some upper body muscle after a lifetime of endurance sports. Love your videos, workout tips, observations, and especially the recipes. Keep 'em coming!
Once every while you give me the feels bro. Never stop sharing. You are my hero. Thanks mate - greetings from Berlin.
Such an underrated "influencer" is Joe. Thank you for your rare content.
God bless you fella. The best most relatable words I've heard for a while. Shares like this are welcome.
Articulate, thoughtful and just bang on the money in general pal. Brilliant. Can’t tell you how much I and many others needed this. Thank you
This is by far one of the most helpful videos I've ever watched.
Our modern day philosopher 🧠🙏🏻
Live below your means, so many people need to hear this
I cannot thank you enough for this. Joe Delaney, you are my hero.
Massively massively love these sorts of videos from you. Really cool to see what you think about these things.
I think I need to send this to a few friends
jesus man im exactly 2:00 mins in and i have to say
Very good video.
Joey D is my hero
Honestly best channel on youtube, very authentic person, appreciate the content over the years!
Hiya Joe, I watched this and it gave me the courage to take a step back and look in. It’s helped me massively in realigning myself.
Over the last few weeks I’ve watched this EOD.
Big thank you dude.
After some serious, long-term and in depth self reflection, I realized you're right.
Not even my therapist explained things better. What a great guy🙏🏼

The best on UA-cam
I just discovered your channel, PERFECT TIMMING ! I TRUELY ENJOY your wisdom. PERFECT TIMMING. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️❤️
I really love that you talk about life rather than just uploading the generic fitness videos that others upload
Love the no nonsense down to earth approach…
Resonates with me chap.
Been watching your stuff for some time now.
All good.
Thank you
prefer this over the fitness stuff Joey, not to say the fitness content is bland by any stretch however this is what sets you apart! All love mate
Bro honestly you speak some facts. It's funny because after your last video I actually realised I was in the self improvement trap and I started seeing self improvement as a result, not a goal. And evrything else you said in the video I have been realising in the last month. It was crazy to hear my exact thoughts on this video. Love your content bro, thanks 🤙
youre addressing the same problems that i have been dealing with. thanks joe!
The whole “how can i be interested” part really shoved it into perspective for me there
class video Joe, I’m thinking a lot more people are waking up to the work less way of life, you hit the nail on the head on realising what level of wealth actually makes you happy, if most people get out of the social media facade of more materialistic things = better life, people can truly find that they don’t need as much as they think to be happy…I’m saying this after changing careers and halving my income for more leisure time and less work related stress, I’m happier than ever.
Thank you for daring to be different on this from other channels and being true to yourself
Joe Delaney saved my life with the previous video.
So imma sign up for his cult😂😂😂
Im jk guys I've been subscribed for more than 7 years 💀
Joe, all I can say is thank you for this. Everything was beautifully said, easy to digest and yet extremely impactful.
You're such a great messenger in this field. Also, I just watched Ted Lasso for the first time and I can't stop seeing Jamie when I hear your dialect, lol.
Fu*k, incredible amount of good information in this video. For real, Joe Delaney is my hero!
Common sense is the new wisdom. This guy’s got a fair bit of it.
wish you'd upload more. Fav channel no doubt.
Love the relaxed, low key delivery and superb editing. 👍
Very insightful and impactful for mere conjecture. Love to hear more of your thoughts.
Amazing video mate, every time you upload we learn
I really appreciated this video! Thanks Delaney, I needed that one
Too much internal investigation is the worst form of procrastination.
Too much time wasted in thoughts, get to actually know yourself by doing things, either with others or solo
Try new things, do something uncomfortable and find out who you are right now.
If you find something you don’t like through that process, it’s lived experience rather than thinking you don’t like something
man... this hits so hard the ninjas started cutting onions.
Hi Joe been a sub for years , most honest no BS channel
On the tube. Keep
It up. 👏🏻🤝👌
Thank you for this inspiring video! I'm gonna go read a novel now.
Self-improvement by all means is a category in which products are sold. A lot of what you've said revolves around the idea of just doing practical things.
That's spot on, but it's actually quite difficult to learn new things and do things to “improve” - so what happens? People don't do it and they look for answers.
Enter your “self-improvement” products (retreats, courses, classes, medicine, etc., etc.)
In an attempt to be better I think we've confused efficiency with cutting corners - it doesn't work.
Joe Delaney really is my hero 💪🏼💪🏼🙌🏻
Shredbundy, I want to say you've always been in my top 3 favourite UA-camrs. Thank you for putting yourself out there brother, if I can grow a pair and just put myself out there, then I hope I can take inspiration from your style of content and create similar vibes through my videos. Much love from New Zealand
This is beautiful. Thanks, Joe
So relaxing listening to Joey D. Such a de-stresses after a stressful time. Thanks Joe.
Thanks for this video, really needed to hear some of these points mentioned and explained clearly. As always, you have a way with getting to the point as simple and quickly as possible. Banging vid!
you always give the good stuff, love the style and quality of your vids
Best vid my guy. Feeling the growth
Thanks for having all the solutions Joe 🙂
LAYING DOWN THE LAW. I need to hear all of this thankyou!!
Joe Delaney’s my hero
Thanks Joe, you're a legend.
Just finishing uni. Was feeling really lost and unsure of myself. I definitely agree with the introspection stuff. This definitely felt encouraging. Thanks mate.
Proper solid video. Glad I discovered your channel.
Top man Joe. I’ve found your channel in Covid times. I’ve binned most of the other channels I found around that time. Keep it up lad. Great physical and mental advice. 💪💪
Appreciate you making this, Joe
Self improvement is focused on teaching the basics. Otherwise, where do you learn them? The curse of knowledge is powerful in these comments. Introspection answers the questions that you cannot find externally. The fundamental question that I believe most people are asking is why? Why do I care what people think? Why do I make promises and not keep them? Why can’t I commit? If you don’t do the internal work, how do you plan on fixing the problems? If you don’t know the cause, how can you find a cure? Just my thoughts. Great video. I’m a new follower. Love the workout stuff too
Don’t talk or think about being the person you want to be, be it.
This was effin excellent. I've spent a lot of time ruminating in isolation and your tips are exactly what I've concluded I need to get on with.
Great video Joe, really enjoyed the last two, it’s a refreshing take on the topic 🙏
“You get to decide.” Yes.
The King has returned 🫅
You're a cool and funny dude, and I appreciate your vids. Albeit, your long hair days were not my fave...but that doesn't matter. I appreciate you're ability to grow into your own self understanding. It makes the content way cooler.
Fiction, specifically Anime/Manga, really helped me become more interested and learn from characters. Some incredible stories can be found in them and they are fun 😊
Needed this today. Well articulated. You're the man.
One of the best videos i have watched
I felt like I've improved by watching this video...cheers Joe!
Scary how you totally understand my thoughts before I have them lol
You’ve got great ideas.
Sending a lot of love:
Another guy doing his best, having the ability to be grateful for the small things and also learning and figuring it out as I go along
Appreciate the thoughts on reading fiction. It is an underrated treat to learn from the characters created by brilliant authors.
