The fact that music from the 60s and 70s still holds up when we can reproduce all the frequencies more clearly is a testament to their better mixing.
Thats why vintage gear from that Era holds its value so well. All of the classic gear sounds wayyyyy better than this new rip off stuff. I learned that the hard way.
Real songwriters/arrangements/musician/singers vs cold/minimalist/atotuned "modern" productuions.
I’m not at the level of these guys , but I’m listening to every podcast to get better,to at least have a conversation with them one day on their level

I think part of the resurgence of stuff like "lofi hip hop beats to chill to" is a phenomena driven by the topics you guys were discussing at the end, music has became so clean and highly produced that people have a nostalgia for that old warm and dirty sound, although most of doing it through "artificial" means with the newer tech. You can pretty much have the sound of any era these days, and really people start gravitating to different sounds once they get tired of whatever the current sound is.
(My favourite era for production sound is the 70s and 80s but mostly the 70s)
Great video love how you guys are talking about the quality of the mix I hear alot of these underground arrtist say that their sound is "industry standard" but then I hear the beats and it's like to clean and the bass is like to much that you can't really fit vocals on the track but then you hear albums from more creative arrtist like kendrick or Tyler the creator and the mix is grimey and nasty and it's like is their really such a thing as a standard you guys definitely touched alot of great topics keep it up

I started off with a usb mic and Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audition) back in 2007-2011 before I had access to auto tune I used Yamaha Pitch Fix.

BTW, back in the day, the individual tracks on an album were always lower than the single because of the limitation of vinyl. The more songs you put on a vinyl record the lower the output would get. This is why the single would be louder because it was the vocal on one side and the instrumental/acapella on the other side. Other than preference, there is absolutely no reason why the volume of the single should be louder than that of the album, overall, nowadays.
This made me think. Should drums in an instrumental be the only tracks you apply an compressor to? What would this do to the overall sound? I use them for all tracks, to taste of course.

Not sure how young you guys are, but Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory changed EVERYTHING for HIPHOP. Yes others used the 808 previously, but the way Bob Power;Tip was able to mix it with the kick in "Check the Rhime" was something we NEVER HEARD BEFORE! That shit was crazy to us! I was in high school then. Then Jay Dee (JDilla) took bass and kicks sonics to the next level. They are the precursor to the thick/punchy ass drums and sub bass you heard later on in 90s hiphop and influenced a lot today.

This is going to be a long winded response but rock with me. Also guys you're doing great with the pod I tune in every week faithfully.
I think the 70's had the best mixes not only because they had the most space to be creative while still innovative but the skill level to mix was a necessity while today if you have the money for a plugin you can essentially make a mix "good." I also believe what we say is good today isn't necessarily good but the idea the artist is trying to convey is the clearest it's ever been. We lose a large sense of ambiguity and mystery through operating in the box and it gives more consistent and explicable outcomes but becomes over saturating and doesn't age well because it all blends together.
I think in the future the music industry will die to the invention for consumers to create or fully realize the music their brain naturally creates. If ever there was a service that people would gladly pay for its for the ideas they can't articulate to be translated into consumable ideas they can either share with others or fully actualize. I think this technology will come out within the next 15 years.
Side bar microwaves have been out since the 50's ya'll so that's 70 years of tech. Exponential tech is anything dealing with the internet.

It depends on the song / album. Not what you wanten to hear but yeah sometimes they go back to the mix. Also listen to good old mixes modern sonics and dynamica dont compare. We not there (yet) where the guys used to be. Dont watch analyzers, listen....

I think the technology is making mixes better but the engineers skills don't have to be there so I would say 90's and older eras had better mixes because it took more skill. I think the question is not about what is the better mix era it is what is the better skill. I feel like mixing is being dumb down. Less skill more plugins.

What if we didn't master all songs for an album the same sonically? After all, it's about the music right? lol
Plug-ins, access to information and audio technology have come light years just in the last decade or so. As a result the barrier for entry is basically nonexistent and a 15 year old kid can use presets and get a pretty good sounding record. My favourite era of mixing was the 2000s. Analog was still prominent. Artists recorded in big studios with expensive equipment and experienced engineers but digital was just being berthed and ProTools was showing it had a purpose. Back when you HAD to be experienced to work on a record. Mixes weren’t given to anyone. Labels worked with veterans and there was a different standard. Case and point. The current state of Nas’ Music. I grew up on him and now His songs are unlistenable to my ears. His mixes are being absolutely butchered. The 70s, 80s, 90s 2000s would never have allowed for an A list artist to be paired with an incompetent engineer.
