It's the most 90s-highschool-tv-studio video I've seen since that one high school class rap battle video where the kid got inaudibly reprimanded and stopped his rap so suddenly. Lol super obscure meme but if you get it, you get it
Seems so
32:42 "Tools are their best when they're invisible. Focus on the hammer - hit your finger. Look at the streering wheel - crash the car. Stare at the knobs - screw up the mix. Get lost in the equipment - so much for the art. You know what I mean. You can't see the forest through the trees. It's the music that counts, not the equipment. Learn your tools well, so you can get past them, into the beauty of the music at hand."

Had it been in a book he would be world famous and would get contracts from numerous artists

It's 2021 and this is STILL ONE OF THE BEST Mixing Courses on UA-cam.
It's because every (EVERY) video about mixing that was actually made FOR UA-cam is trying to sell you something, whether it's a product, ad views, or the creator's "personal brand."
A video like this that was made before UA-cam is trying to actually teach you something as well as possible in the best way it can. It might succeed, it might fail, but what it WON'T typically do is trickle out jsut enogh information for you to keep coming back. Comparing this to a UA-cam video is like comparing a freshman course in architecture with someone trying to sell you a timeshare condo.
Also, you know, superior visual style here.

This wasn't just a video of the Art of Mixing . This video should have been nominated for a Oscar award. This was amazing . This video will change a beginners whole perspective in a positive way on how to approach a mix if you let it. Wish I saw this years ago but its never too late.

I feel that!
I agree I only wish it was updated for todays gear and alot of complete beginers and I would even call myself an amatour I wish there were a similar video with updated things we can use for 2023, I use garageband (the standard version) but I guess its the same only digital tools, I am terrible at it but hope to become mediocore
@@oscaroscar7904 I think the whole point is that you dont "need" that many tools...
you just need to know how to use them
Hell yeah man, I've been mixing since the early nineties and always kind of visually/mentally mixed like this, very interesting to me how so much of mixing way back when was to reduce noise and create clarity with equipment that had a white noise headroom (tape) but now with digital its about clarity but avoiding break up, too much mixing these days seems obsessed with compressing the crap out of everything so it is ridiculously loud which truncates the amplitudes to make it harsh and square and how much good sound has actually degenrated with mono boom boxes replacing hi fis and people seeming to be happy to listen to music on tiny speakers from their phones like a crappy old handheld AM radio...

David Gibson was the owner and operator of CRI (California Recording Institute) in San Francisco, CA back in the late 90's. I attended his Summer '99 crash course in audio engineering. He was exactly like this in-person as well - kind of like a missing character from WKRP in Cincinnati. These courses were finished and ready for distribution at the end of that Summer, and I bought the first copy, out of the box, on VHS! LOL The red car was permanently parked in the main studio so they could test mixes on the stock system in it. We would also sit in the car during classes.
Weed jokes aside, this video is really good and informative. I'd like to see more from him
This is the work he's currently doing: www.soundhealingcenter.com/instructors.html

2023 and still most comprehensive tutorial ive seen ..genius!
Long, cheesy (but funny in a cheesy way), but most of all very, very useful. Don't let the time-stamp (1990?) fool you, and therefore the lack of VSTs or DAW mentions. What is being taught here is a curriculum of core fundamentals through a grainy, trippy, often witty and seemingly "old school" lens. Don't overlook this treasure. And, apparently, many thanks to David Gibson for not requesting that it be brought down from UA-cam.
Key excerpt: "Get distortion. Go to jail."
"Get distortion. Go to jail."
Word, this guide is a hilarious treasure! :)
@@mronck distortion plugins left the chat
U described it perfectly
What specifically has changed since this video came out? Is there anything else I'd need to know if I wanted to start teaching myself to mix?
@@stefanalexanderlungu1503 not really. This guy literally teaches you exactly what it claims it does. You should be able to apply these lessons on mixing anywhere you mix sound. This video is perfect.
However, what you still need to know depends on what you already know and what you aim to do. If you are a complete beginner to recording, mixing, mastering and computer software or audio hardware then outside of mixing you have much to learn.
This video makes me feel like I’m from the future.

@@TheSozeone you understand what i mean. the concept of sonics are perpetual but the visuals and delivery of the video is very vintage. i liked it never said i didn’t.
Yes, I agree, well said
Modern digital recording faces exactly the same principles in mixdown but with the absence of battling against lack of 'headroom' (space where white noise occured opposed to actual sound when turning stuff up), everything in it is completely relevant and applies to digital multitrack mixing down with DAWS because a DAW is just a digitally analagous copy of its analog hardware predecessors.
I went to this school in SF in 1999. Dave was great, me and some other students recorded a song called “God is a bubble” as a mock on his “new” virtual software on community tapes and he heard it teaching a class and didn’t like very much haha. He always threw the best parties though.

This is still the most complex but most easy to understand mixing material made to this date. It's also so refreshing to see someone take this topic with humour and fun. I was already very sick and tired of pretenious producers making rocket science from music mixing. It's really incredible. Thank you for uploading this fantastic stuff we probably would never discover otherwise!
The back-to-front adjustment via pre-delay could have been covered during the section at about the 26-minute mark. Nice and spaced-out and not too rocket-sciencey either.
Patrik yes, this is entertainment done right. So creative and down to earth, it portrays music for what it really is, a gorgeous creative medium for human expressions, not acting like its some kind of mathematical surgical tool for the elites. I attended his recording engineering school in 1999 in san francisco. He taught several courses himself
This completely changed the way I think about sound, effects, and mixing. I can't believe it has under a million views.
1.8 million just 11 months later. WOOF baby !! 🙃🙂
I wonder where this guy is now. Hope he's doing great.
He’s a minister, gave him a Google.
Say what?? I thought this guy would be doing just that; now I have to check for myself 😸
@@danskweir385 brrrruuuuhhhh this guy is the real god damn deal

I know what's going to be playing over and over in my head as I try to sleep tonight
EVERY TIME this thing comes on, it's a reminder to finally go to sleep because it's somewhere between 1 & 5am
Holla! If you're here with me in 2020

Heyy
I am watching this high af on painkillers and anticonvulsants and it is both an absolute trip due to the early 90s production and writing, and super informative at the same time. Best video I've found in a while.
Horrible combination btw don’t reproduce. Also enjoy your opioid addiction in a month, as I’m sure you are finding out or have found out about already
This is such a beautiful time capsule. I feel like I'm watching Brule's Rules with this editing style.
The dude who edited this had the best day of his life using the equipment to make these effects.
I think I finally understand what “work hard, play hard” actually looks like in real life.
Thats a very good point
“All values are valid, the only possible evil is having no values at all.”
unless you have liberal values. oh. wait... liberals have no values
That part.

It is a parody and yet not, it's that fucking zen master type shit where you learn without "learning".
I have been looking somethin precious knowledge about mix, for so long. now i only read some comments, and have to check this video, have fillin' found at last.🙏
Im in audio engineering and this is one of the books that we are studying great book and a cool video
