    32:42 "Tools are their best when they're invisible. Focus on the hammer - hit your finger. Look at the streering wheel - crash the car. Stare at the knobs - screw up the mix. Get lost in the equipment - so much for the art. You know what I mean. You can't see the forest through the trees. It's the music that counts, not the equipment. Learn your tools well, so you can get past them, into the beauty of the music at hand."

      It's because every (EVERY) video about mixing that was actually made FOR UA-cam is trying to sell you something, whether it's a product, ad views, or the creator's "personal brand."
      A video like this that was made before UA-cam is trying to actually teach you something as well as possible in the best way it can. It might succeed, it might fail, but what it WON'T typically do is trickle out jsut enogh information for you to keep coming back. Comparing this to a UA-cam video is like comparing a freshman course in architecture with someone trying to sell you a timeshare condo.
      Also, you know, superior visual style here.

    David Gibson was the owner and operator of CRI (California Recording Institute) in San Francisco, CA back in the late 90's. I attended his Summer '99 crash course in audio engineering. He was exactly like this in-person as well - kind of like a missing character from WKRP in Cincinnati. These courses were finished and ready for distribution at the end of that Summer, and I bought the first copy, out of the box, on VHS! LOL The red car was permanently parked in the main studio so they could test mixes on the stock system in it. We would also sit in the car during classes.

      Hell yeah man, I've been mixing since the early nineties and always kind of visually/mentally mixed like this, very interesting to me how so much of mixing way back when was to reduce noise and create clarity with equipment that had a white noise headroom (tape) but now with digital its about clarity but avoiding break up, too much mixing these days seems obsessed with compressing the crap out of everything so it is ridiculously loud which truncates the amplitudes to make it harsh and square and how much good sound has actually degenrated with mono boom boxes replacing hi fis and people seeming to be happy to listen to music on tiny speakers from their phones like a crappy old handheld AM radio...

    Long, cheesy (but funny in a cheesy way), but most of all very, very useful. Don't let the time-stamp (1990?) fool you, and therefore the lack of VSTs or DAW mentions. What is being taught here is a curriculum of core fundamentals through a grainy, trippy, often witty and seemingly "old school" lens. Don't overlook this treasure. And, apparently, many thanks to David Gibson for not requesting that it be brought down from UA-cam.

      Modern digital recording faces exactly the same principles in mixdown but with the absence of battling against lack of 'headroom' (space where white noise occured opposed to actual sound when turning stuff up), everything in it is completely relevant and applies to digital multitrack mixing down with DAWS because a DAW is just a digitally analagous copy of its analog hardware predecessors.

    • @Corvid
      @Corvid 2 місяці тому

      I've been using this kinda method (poorly, and without much success till this video) for years, it's gold dust! When you're out on your own trying to figure out a musicians "tone to end all tone" sound, it's so useful. Even with the multitrack stems, the bassline for Hysteria by Muse is some WILD shit... when all is said and done, that bassline is a layer of heavily processed DI, a clean amp, an amp with a distortion pedal into it, an amp with a fuzz pedal into it and a synthesizer mirroring every note.
      I've got the bass Chris W uses, the strings he uses, all the pedals, and amp/cab sims that get 95% of the way there... but how do you layer that?! Turns out that each element has a specific place in 3D with various hard EQs adjusting the depth through brightness, along with the usual panning. Eventually there's this moment where it all comes together, and even though I'm not sure I'd be able to reverse engineer my mix decisions, the result is exactly what I was looking for. Then round that off with soul destroying levels of surgical EQ and compression on the DI for a monumental solid puck of low end, some compression, saturation and overall gentle EQ, and boom... something that kinda gets close.
      No one told me that I should be focusing WAY more on production than mixing, I kinda assumed a mix engineer did the "how shit is panned and layered" thing... sometimes, yeah, but that's production, and unless a producer is involved, that's down to the musician!

I thought I'd bore myself to sleep on the tail end with some choice hypnotic assistance, and holy shit was I in for a weird night... left this on repeat, and kept waking up to the lesson being interrupted by hallucinations of a genie telling me to break studio equipment and ruin the mix, and other such weirdness. Watching it outside a total hypnagogic dream state was wild, turns out I wasn't hallucinating in the slightest!

    The saturation from VHS to UA-cam is so prominent in the audio for this video ❤️

    I bought the book 10 years ago then stumbled on this video in 2012 it really enhanced the learning process. This is the best mixing video you will ever watch. It's silly but it works. Visualization will really put your mixes on another level. Always remember your ears have the final say! Keep Mixing!
