- Eskimo Callboy (best known for "Hypa Hypa" and "Pump It") announced that they are taking their old music offline due to offensive lyrics, and that they may change their name. Did they cancel themselves? How should Eskimo Callboy handle the situation?

Your definition of eskimo was correct, all you missed is that it's derogatory not just to Alaskans, but natives who live far north in Canada as well. In the northern Canadian territories there are and were many similar tribes.
I’m not at all for cancel culture. But if a person or band wants to “self cancel” then they have every right to it as long as they aren’t bullied into something they don’t want to do.
But they were bullied. They were coerced into this action by this ridiculous culture. Anyone who thinks that this was "a good move on their part" is just as complicit as those who actively push cancel culture. "Self censorship" is STILL censorship, and it's indicative of a weak will. Beta. Each and every person who will acquiesce to the hateful mob are bitches. I'll die on this hill, too. Disagree with me if you like, but you won't silence me.
@@maynarddrivesfast804 I'm from Germany and all I can tell you is that there was no shit storm or a smear campaign at all. They just reflect their old stuff and it was an internal impulse.
@@PM-vv3uc but they said that they read the comments and criticisms from fans in the article
@@off6848 That doesn't necessarily mean they were bullied and/or harassed en masse though. As far as we know, it sounds just like a few people made some comments about it moreso than there was any major backlash. I mean, they didn't even trend on Twitter!
I have no problem with this band canceling themselves, they are annoying.
Lol im gay and that was not offensive to me. There’s a ton of context clues that it’s all jokes. Modern audiences would be appalled at some of the stuff me and my little scene kid friends would say in person and on MySpace back In 2005. glad that they’re graduating passed outdated shock value, because I can tell they’re good musicians and want to be taken more seriously/ at least be more respectful. for a joke band that’s a nice sentiment to highlight. I respect it.
gay people aren't a monolith, it can be offensive to some and not to others, that's their whole point. They took it upon themselves to change things.
My gay friends have ALWAYS told the most offensive jokes. I'm pretty ruthless and don't hold back but they are on another level.
@@Cheezus oh shut up
@@Cheezus I know man! Just said me wasn’t claiming to rep everyone ❤️
@@rl-ub9hx I’ve made that observation too. I think after you come out you get this empowered feeling that you inherently aren’t able to adhere to convention so why not just learn to laugh at all the up tight people who still are clinging to tradition. When I was younger my humor was way more “edgy” and a bit disrespectful , but in time I’ve sort of learned to cut everyone some slack and be more empathetic to people from all walks of life. Culturally it was a very different time when I came out so just for the we aren’t a monolith commenter, I’m speaking from my perception of the lgbt people around my age that I have known personally.
I agree. I think the fact they're doing it themselves, and not overplaying it. This is the mature way to approach this issue. Especially since they're not trying to call anyone out or anything.
I live in northern Canada and interact with Inuit people fairly regularly. A football team in Edmonton recently changed it's name from "Eskimoes" to "elks", so it has been a common topic of discussion. Very few Inuit are offended by the use of the word, but preferer using Inuit or northerner. It's offensive to middle class whites and inaccurate to the Inuit themselves. Eskimo comes from I believe the cree word for the inuit.
Spot on. It’s like when they went to change the name of nfl teams. The natives didn’t care or really even watch football. It’s was all white sjws who were mad and trying to be champions for people who didn’t give a shit about it.
Inuit Callboy
Inuit is only one tribe described under the blanket of Eskimo. There are several distinct arctic tribes that the term is used to describe collectively. It’s like referring to white people as Caucasian instead of their nationality. Caucasian means from the caucus mountains which would only refer to Eastern Europeans. You don’t here any white people complaining about this terminology
@@ericsmith8129 - Umm wtf are you talking about? They've been protesting the Washington Redskins every NFL Sunday for like 30 plus years. Extremely inaccurate comment.
Mostly white people protesting.
It's basically what Nik Nocturnal said when he talked about this, I would go with just "callboy" so people won't get lost with their stuff. Also, I guess they're doing all this now not only because they're getting bigger, it's actually a pretty smart move if they're going seriously with the Eurovision thing
I wouldn't go with callboy either as it a slang term for a male prostitute
@UCn71kAty_1wZ7Q4neEk6Ltg Who knows, maybe sex workers might consider it offensive a year or two from now. Online crazies farm their virtue signals on them too, I would steer clear if I was in the band.
@@stephenwills9377 it still means male prostitute in the current name just an Eskimo one so don't think that's going to hold them back
their words seem genuine. it’s usually fairly obvious when someone is apologizing just to save face or because they were pressured into it, and this doesn’t feel like that. good on them for maturing and being willing to listen to criticism.
This is the reason why, when Myspace said they lost everyone's old page, I didn't get too sad about it. Ugh, the cringe I posted back then. People change, the world changes, and good on Eskimo Callboy for growing up and realizing this stuff.
They only made the move after receiving criticism online. It’s not a genuine move. They want to save face.
@@ericsmith8129 no one cares it’s still a good move
The band even re-recorded that song not too long ago and those lyrics were changed for the better. "Hot like a funky track, hot like a Gucci bag". It's good they cancelled themselves before somebody else could, because folks don't realize people are capable of change
I think them doing this has very little to do with cancel culture. They have some international recognition now and they are about to get kind of mainstream, so it is time to clean up some youth sins and be open about it. Furthermore EC wants to running this years Eurovision contest. For those folks that are not from Europe, Eurovision has a become stable for the LGBTQ+ Community (already since the 90s), as a contestant you can silly and ridiculous, but homophobia and/or racism is a strict no go. I think with their current style EC actually stands a chance being a good contender for the Contest but of cause their legacy lyrics and their name might pose a problem. So it totally makes sense for them clear this up
Wow Eurovision sounds like a pile of shit
Eurovision has good songs/performance but yeah some od their rules suck imo
This is a refreshing change from the rock world to see a band take ownership of a situation and handle it in a mature way, what's perhaps surprising is that the maturity has come from a joke band, hopefully the twitter types don't pounce on them as this isn't the hill to die on
Well said
Okay, so I learned about the term Eskimo in about 10th grade in Germany, if not earlier, which was around 2010. I'm not big about cancel culture as well, but having major lineup changes gives both them and their old vocalist the opportunity to distance themselves from their old lyrics as a product of their time, which might not reflect what they stand for today. I have the (strong but unfounded) suspicion that Sushi left because of he wanted a cleaner record and move on to do more introspective stuff and seems a lot more socially aware nowadays, and ec used the chance to follow suit. So, win win for me. They moved on to form two better bands, like a heavy amoeba.
And I went to school in Germany and the teachers said the n-word in late 90s.
As an Alaskan, Eskimo is an offensive term. We prefer “native” or our natives name such as “Iñupiaq” “Yu’pik” “Athabascan” etc. I’m glad they know what it means now
5:43 yes!! The focus on aesthetics ultimately doesn’t do anything except make things worse for the people who are truly affected by the issues
I never knew Eskimo was considered a bad word. You learn something new everyday!
Yeah me neither. I thought Eskimo was a real word.
Only for the proud Inuit tribe of northern Canada. The Yupik and Aleut tribe from Alaksa and Sibiria dont have a problem with it and actually dont like to be called Inuit.
It isnt a Bad word its a try of using Guild to reach goals everyone except of inuit is Calling themself this term. The Inuit trying to replace the umbrella Term of Eskimos with Inuit so they become the definition. Its like the tribe of the Apache would claim native as racist and demand everybody should use apache instead of natives so they cover up the whole other tribes.
In old blogs they stated that they received long essays on why their name is offensive but they said that they do not give a damn - well aware that it is potentially offensive. They switched their name because they want to represent Germany at the european song contest
So.. as a gay dude... that scene in hangover... is fucking hilarious. I couldn't care less about things like that. Like Eminem old lyrics. It was just common talk then. Shit. Even I talked like that back then. The majority of us did. How did a generation of people brought up watching things like south park... get so offended by being ironic?
As someone who isn't American, I didn't know that Eskimo was an offensive word to certain people.
Eskimo callboy have canceled themselves imo because they have applied to enter Eurovision song contest. Eurovision is an all inclusive contest and is extremely into making everyone feel welcome (look up Conchita Wurst). My theory is that to be included they have to take down anything offensive and change the name so it is non offensive.
Just my thoughts on it.
+1 on this, definitely has to do with Eurovision, if they enter they’ll be in serious contention to win, and for votes they’ll probably have to rely on the same TikTok crowd that got alternative acts like Måneskin, Blind Channel, Go_A and Hatarí as far as they did in recent years.
@@TheTamaJustice Hatarí though got some heat for the Palestinian flag.
Yeah, I'm somewhat active in the eurovision community and as soon as they announced they wanted to represent Germany I saw backlash referring to the things mentioned in this video.
I grew up in Germany (as an Asian). Most people until the 90's in Germany really thought that Eskimo was the normal standard term for Alaskan natives. Even elementary school teachers thought it was the political correct term. We grew up with this misinformation for several decades. Later on, people realised that Eskimo means human eater in the native language (I'm not sure how accurate this information is) and started calling them Inuits instead. But still many people in Germany nowadays don't know that Eskimo is an actual oppressive slur towards native Alaskans, just like the N-word for black people. I'm glad that you talk about it and share your research with the community! 🙏
Eskimo means "raw meat eater". The next thing is, only the Inuit tribe from northern Canada is against the name Eskimo, the Yupik and Aleut tribe from Alaska and Sibiria like the name as a summery of all the northern tribes and hate it to be called Inuit.
@@Kullioking interesting! 🤔
@@dannychane Its like we would say to every Asian that they are chinese.
@@Kullioking It makes sense if only one tribe of Native Alaskans is called Inuits. I wish at least one Native Alaskan could join this whole discussion, as we are all not concerned about the whole debate. But yeah, probably you are more educated in this I do (I don't even know one person who's from one of those tribes).
Hmm.... Didn't know Eskimo is an undesired name. Good to know. As for the band, I'm glad they're doing this. They are showing dignity, respect, and proving themselves in their movement of development and maturity. People shouldn't focus on the past, but widen their view in how artists are now compare to what they where back then.
Changing band names seems for this seems like a rock and hard place kind of situation. Like even if it is morally the correct choice, and probably the best choice considering the entertainment industry at large all the hype you've built up for yourself in search algorithms and general recognizability just gets nuked. I've seen bands that gain traction completely fail after a name change. On the bright side, a possibly interesting topic for you to deep dive/make a vid on?
Capture comes to mind.
I wouldn't be too worried for them. They have a really smart social media presence, all the "react" channels and twitch streamers will still talk about them (some of the "react" youtubers get hundreds of thousands of views themselves), which will gain traction, they're doing a US tour this year, etc.. They may take a little dip, but I think they'll be alright.
I expected this move for a long time. I just asked a friend who's more into them if and when they want to change their name.
Germany is not unenlightened about discrimination, racism, sexism or homophobia. Eskimo is considered a slur in Germany as well. Their old lyrics not ok. So we're pretty much on the same level as the US.
But being in a similar age and also grew up in Germany, I grew up with this word as the normal term for Inuit. Hell, it was even in children's songs we sang in school. I just learned as a grown-up that it is not the right word to use.
@@knispler666 Alle Kinder lernen lesen... Ja stimmt schon, aber mittlerweile hat sich einiges geändert. Im Grunde genommen parallel zu den USA.
Their old lyrics were fine it’s joke music anyone who took offense is an asshole
It depends, a lot of modern Germans know Eskimo as an outdated and incorrect term, but I think it would be safe to say many don't actually grasp the full derogatory connotation and tend to associate nostalgia rather than malicious history with the term. Especially because it is part of common and beloved songs and media from childhood.
Also they called themselves "Eskimo Gayboy" at some point bc haters from the hardcore scene called them that and they made very clear they don't wanna be homophobic. Maybe they just didn't think about it. Also it was always like they're more of a fun/Party band and i don't think they wanted to be "edgy"
They're were always really self aware and made fun out of themselves more than the haters did and I think bc of that, they got respected more and more by the core community and worked themselves to the top. I mean they made Songs with Fronz & Deuce (Ex Hollywood Undead) way before they got that hype and supported Bands like Hollywood Undead and Papa Roach.
Edit: I'm also queer and a poc in germany and I never had any problem with their lyrics. I don't think they should take the songs offline, cause thats what made them great and the Sound is still good for todays Standards. I still enjoy them.
I don't think it's a good idea for them to change their Name. People know them for that Name. If they change their name to just "Callboy" or sth. They'd would lose a lot of listeners, cause a lot will be confused about it and don't find them under their New Name. For example Slaves changed their name to Rain City and then Rain City Drive. Like, it's cool but my mind goes like "wait that sounds kinda wrong, are they the same Band or a different Band. They released their last album under "Slaves" so idk what to think about it".
Imo it would be right, but also wrong for them to change their name.
Hahaha. Wow. I cringed SO hard when you began to read the lyrics. 😬
Thanks for the clarification.
I think if they change it to just Callboy it would keep the 'edgyness' but gets rid of the offensiveness. And the transition would be much easier since the name doesn't change that much.
No one can call me "Jewish" anymore. That is a colonialist name. You all must say I am "Yehudi" now.
This is a smart marketing move for them.
They’re Germans with a language barrier and empathy.
They were told it’s offensive, they’ve taken it onboard. Good for them.

They’re obviously good dudes with morals, they’re making the necessary adjustments.

I think the partners who work with the Eurovision Song Contest (of which they are trying to enter into for this year to represent Germany) had a lot to do with this decision. Being politically correct is the norm in business these days, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Eurovision people were the ones that told them to do this. Just my two cents.
Very likely
I like Eskimo Callboy's new stuff but there is no way I could buy merch and wear it with the name. I'm really hoping they change it so I can support them.
Just change the name to Innuit Callboy

FFS, let's just get rid of all spoken and written language and just go back to grunts. I'm old enough to remember when people said if you don't like something then simply don't watch/read/listen. Problem solved.
We call those people boomers now and nobody wants to be a boomer.

Yup, and back in the day that solved everything! Exept racism. And sexism. Homophobia. Ableism. Wealth inequality. And on and on and on...

I can only speak for myself, but as a 28 year old guy from the UK, until a few years ago, I had never heard the native people of Alaska referred to anything other than 'Eskimos'. In fact this was so common place, that until a couple of years back, I had no idea it was offensive to them, or that there were alternative titles that could be used. Perhaps that European naivety played into Eskimo Callboy's procedure when naming the band.
Regardless, they've put out some great party metal bangers and I'm sure they'll continue to succeed under a, perhaps, more inclusive name.
Eskimo Pie was changed to Edy's Pie in 2020 so, I recommend Eskimo Callboy to change to Edy's Callboy
I kinda wish everyone would watch South Parks episode "The F Word" and adopt that. If that's wrong, so be it.
Growing up and trying to improve is always a good thing.
Oh my God, they gonna cancel our ice-cream! (Eskymo)
JK, but in my language "eskymák" is kind of the slang term used for all "people from north". Nobody in here think of it as a slur, it´s more like child word. (not trying to defend just stating what is it like in my language, czech).
I think the term “cancel culture” despite it being a real thing has become so overused it’s lost a lot of meaning. But it’s definately not what’s happening here.
They realised terms they were using are considered problematic by todays standards and want to make sure it’s an inclusive environment for everyone. I see them as taking accountability for their actions.
I agree, 'cancel culture' is used similarly to the way conservatives talked about 'political correctness' in the 1980s and 90s, is basicially an empty term thrown around to shut down discussion about whether peoples' words and action cause harm to others. And the fact that so many celebrities that have been accused or even been found guilty of sexual assault still have incredibly successful careers is a pretty clear example of difficult it is to 'cancel' someone in the way bigots often describe it.

I saw them live in reading in like 2012!!! Opened for KMK 🤘🏻
Funny thing is, that there is a re-recorded Monsieur mustache version on the recent hypa hypa record. So I'm a bit confused about them playing the "we we're young and stupid" card. Speaking about the old lyrics: Being German I used to know EC almost from the very start of the bands career. And at first I used to hate them because a) I was a 16 year old gatekeeping metal nerd and b) I actually had a problem with their lyrics, but after a while I kinda got to like them and I realized that you basically can't take anything serious what they're doing and that it's all so over the top. But yeah, there were still some words in the lyrics which werent cool then and aren't cool now. But I don't really understand this move of canceling right know, considering the fact that there were a lot of awful lyrics in metal ore back then, and I personally have more problems with old asking Alexandria and emmure lyrics. But I thin instead of canacelling every old shitty metal core lyrics from 2010 I think the best way is to reflect on it and doing a better job today.
But I think changing their name is the right move though.
Kinda like when Andrew Jackson Jihad changed their name to AJJ
A very sensitive, well balanced and sensible video. Great stuff Finn
agree with you Finn on that
It always seems like rock bands are cancelling themselves, but you never hear of hip hop artists cancelling themselves.
African Americans are too based
The important thing to remember is that this is THEIR choice. And it's a good one - there are so many words in the language that AREN'T slurs or even mildly irritating to various demographics - it's not a big move language-wise to change the name of a project or band. It might be a bit of a detriment with branding, but if you put branding over doing the right thing, then you gotta wonder what that brand is actually worth going forward.
Good for them. They won't have to look back ten years from now with the same name getting ACTUALLY called out and going "shit, we should have fixed this when we had the chance".
Agree on everything!
They should call themselves E-Callboy. That way they would still be recognizable.
They’ve done so much research, even uploaded a new video about it today, they are educating themselves while still being bombarded on twitter, sad world
In my country of Russia the word "eskimo" is generally referred to a type of ice-cream. There's a small amount of eskimo people living in my country (1738 in 2010 according to wiki) and I doubt they even know about Eskimo Callboy, let alone being offended by that band's name. Perhaps it's a different story in the US.
4:58 careful about that take... I came across some online people trying to roast Dimebag about his rebel flag guitar and how racist he was because of it. I tried to explain that in 90's as a southern white person, the flag meant something entirely different. It was like a southern trash pride thing and not about white supremacy at all. Well, they tried to crucify me for that information, lol.
I have some 20 year old blog content I deleted 10 years ago for the same reason.
Side note, I’m in Perú right now and there is a local rapper literally named “ni**er”. He’ll probably change his name.
Love the Cerebral Incubation shirt. Should definitely check them out in my spare time.
Seether use to be Saron Gas when they were still a South African band, but had to change when they moves to the states around 2001.
I just wanna say, that the fact about eskimo being a slur actually is well known in Germany; at least in the area where I live. I don't think this was the case back in 2010, but I think I know it since at least 8 or 9 years or something.
It was somewhat known when they formed, but it wasn't this huge social topic as it is now. Some didn't even know it was a slur. And even if people knew, it wasn't even seen as bad as calling someone an idiot.
As far as I know, eskimos call themselves eskimos. My understanding is it’s just rich white people imposing their opinion on other people by force. That’s what I’ve gathered from most people including my time in Alaska and the Yukon.
There are people like Jan Fleischhauer who will always use these offensive terms, because they are just assholes lol.
Oh yea? Have a lot of Inuit in Germany that told you this?
@@ericsmith8129 i think because this word is being used to describe native people of Greenland, which is officially a part of Denmark, i read somewhere that it's a topic in Denmark too

From Canada, and yes, I’ve met Inuit natives who are quite offended by being called that. I even had textbooks in high school history that still said it and basically there was a protest.

I wish people would stop making “offensive” synonymous with “in questionable/bad taste.”
You can think something is insensitive without being offended by it.
Very true
Queer here! Back then, we all, be it musicians or every day people, would say the f-word or R-Word routinely, not out of a place of malice but shock. Even when I would use the f-word or R-Word, before I came out to myself, I never said it in a way that indicated "I hate gay/disabled people!" But in a "haha I said a bad word I called u a bad name" way. Look at Tyler the Creator, he used the F-Word all the time before he came out to himself.
And even back in 2013ish when I discovered this band, I thought to myself, "as an American I recognize Eskimo as a slur but give this German band the benefit of the doubt"
Now I'm openly out and my career is with the disabled. I'm not ashamed of this past that much of us shared because it's important to embrace the changing tides rather than act like they never happened or like I wasn't ever a part of it or just double down and say "that's how I was raised!" Like old people who still say "colored/negro" when they mean "black".
Good on EC for being able to say "We recognize times have changed and we spoke out of a place of youthful shock value and cross-cultural ignorance and now that we have grown and learned, we can confidently say that is not who we are or ever really were".
Kinda like Beastie Boys, they came out against a lot of their earlier lyrics saying it was never really who they were, but times, pressure, labels, etc kinda played up what was supposed to be a parody. I really respect that.
My only hope is that it’s sincere and not monetarily driven because some upset white people told them they were bad while said offended white people were never going to spend any money on this band. #Eskimogate
My wife actually works with a native Alaskin. At one point they were building "team workout playlist" (just for fun) and my wife wanted to add Hypa Hypa. She did make sure to stop and ask if the name would offend her co worker. Luckily, her coworker said that SHE was not offended by it but appreciated that my wife asked first. I think changing the name is a pretty good move.
From watching their reaction videos and stuff I feel like they are super down to earth and cool dudes so whatever they want to do I will support. They're recent releases are absolutely amazing so as long as they keep pumping out these bangers I will support it. As far as what's the "right" thing to do...fuck if I know. I'm just a straight white guy and I think being offended is annoying but I'm also very anti-imperialist/anti-colonialist so I'm totally down with the name change thing. Pulling offensive songs tho...I wish they didn't have to/want to do that but they are enough crazy people out there that would hold that against them.
That's interesting how they've grown as individuals
I’m a journalist in Canada, and a lot of my work covers Inuit communities and affairs. The band’s current name is considered to be problematic, and the term “Eskimo” has been condemned by groups such as the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (Canada’s national Inuit organization).
I can’t speak on behalf of Inuit, but it’s a term that Canadians don’t use because it’s considered to be racist.
I’m sure the name change would be welcomed. It’s worth looking at how the Edmonton Elks football team adopted their new name.
It’s also worth looking into the issues Inuit communities face, such as higher suicide, poverty and food insecurity rates, caused by Canada’s colonial legacy.
I think they're doing this in a very mature and appropriate way. Kudos.
As long as the tickets I purchased for a 2022 Eskimo Callboy show are still honored I don’t care.
I still dont quite understand what makes Eskimo an offensive term. It can't be offensive just because it's a word that was used by whites rather than natives can it? Because I know of other races having their own words for whites which aren't considered offensive.
Its not bad tho.
meanwhile, Eskimo is a brand of ice cream in southern Brazil.
As a Canadian, the band is so much fun, but I couldn't feel comfortable with the name. I always figured it was a lack of knowledge thing more than a mean/mocking/whatever thing.
The term “Eskimo” is also offensive to the Inuit and related peoples indigenous to the Canadian north.
Living in Northern Canada people don't so much seem offended by the word as they are now using a more accurate term. The word came from the "related peoples" you are talking about.

this is very reminiscent of the time AJJ started abbreviating their band name - there was more of a pushback about the change than there had ever been for the band to change it. it was especially funny given the band had also refused to play any songs off their first album for years at that point, stating multiple times that songs sean wrote as a literal college student were at best stifling and at worst embarrassing. a name change should not have been surprising at all. know people just, like, love to strip aave from its original context and meaning, but it is...kind of impossible to self-cancel? it's a refusal to engage with a person for a transgression or crossing of a boundary, and changing your own mind in what is obviously good faith is not that. i think it's always surprising (and concerning) when people who claim to align themselves with anything alternative fall into traps of Literally Making Up A Guy To Be Mad At because it's the exact anti-intellectualism and reverence for/appeal to ignorance that is the basis for, like, your basic reactionary rhetoric. very cringe.
Everything is offensive to someone. What’s irritating is it’s only certain groups who get protected from offense. I don’t care about wether you offend me. I’m not going to call for someone to be cancelled over it. People have said really crappy things about me for being Christian, for being disabled, among other things. It’s funny that people are okay with the jokes about me being Christian but that the disability jokes are off limits.
Why can’t people just do what we used to do when we got offended and just stop listening?
If we wanna grow closer, we might sometimes have to point out whats differentiating us to see what we got in common. I'd like to make fun of your believes just like I'd like you to make fun of mine. Not a Christian, please tell your God to spare me.
I see what you’re saying but it’s written in the Bible that followers of Christ will be hated as they hated him when he was alive. Being hated is part of being Christian
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” - Jesus Christ
With that said, I love you brother in Christ
There was a football team called edmonton eskimos. They changed it to elks instead
Finn: "Alaskan natives don't like being called Eskimos, they prefer to be called... I'm not gonna try to say that" hella funny
good for them. seems theyve been told some things are offensive and theyre taking it onboard. shows theyre mature
I learned today that Dryers Ice cream changed the name of “E****o Pie to Edy’s Pie”!
Should also be noted that they have a new singer as opposed to the one from that era. Good for them on calling themselves out and growing.
If they want too change name I get it but take songs offline Is a bit much but I actually haven't listened to much old stuff from them
I didn't even know Eskimo was a slur ... I must have missed that one. I can't keep up with all the terms being created and destroyed. That said, as long as this is their idea and not being forced on them, it's really cool to see
here in RU "eskimo" is a brand of oldschool classic ice-cream and also is used to kinda mock native ppl living far north. Pretty sure germans are also aware of the meaning, but giving those songs are from 2010 - the band just was youngsters having fun not thinking they'd be successful in the states, and how the world is much more different place in 2k20's
That ice cream brand used to be Eskimo in Hungary too, but eventually changed to Algida, the most common branding in Europe. It has other brand names in other countries.
The ice cream was available in Germany too. While enjoying it, I was of course thinking about how my ice cream mocks American natives. Clown World.
I've bopped to Rich Chigga way back in 2016 before he changed his name to Rich Brian before the turn of 2018.
His name change marked his falling off too
I am a long time EC fan and I like the way they handle their old lyrics. When they remastered Monsieur Moustache they kept all the ridicoulus shit and just changed the parts about drunk driving and racial/gay slurs. They show that they haven't gotten "too mature" for their old material.
I'm sure you know this, but just bc it wasn't super clear in the video and it's a common misconception, the Viet Cong were not the North Vietnamese. They were South Vietnamese Communist insurgents who allied with and were eventually consolidated with the North Vietnamese.
The communist part is the key
Waiting for Carcass to put out a press release... 🤣
I think if they want to change their name or take their music off Spotify that’s totally fine. Even if it’s because of pressure they still could’ve easily kept everything the same and would’ve kept the vast majority of their fanbase. This is also a good marketing strategy that gets people talking about them and opens them up to new demographics that probably wouldn’t have listened to them otherwise. It sounds like a win win to me
I heard from them from time to time and liked there music, but retroactively changing Lines and removing Songs and Even rename themself for pc is a pretty pussy move. And its ridiciolous. What comes next? We decided to cut out all the screams because some people might get afraid or Even triggered? After it we removed the guitars because disabled people cant play them so we decided not to use them anymore. Instead we are using triangles now. Its a ridicolous move and yes i claimed disabled people cant Play guitare for the point. Because Many overly pc people have no problem with generalisation as soon as it fits them or there narrative.
Saying the name "Viet Cong" is "horribly offensive" is horribly offensive to millions of people in Vietnam.
Watching this video, I can’t help but think about Nat King Cole’s magnum opus and its lyric, “…!and folks dressed up like- - “ you know
Is it just me or are they being really vague about this whole thing? I don't follow cancel culture but usually when someone's about to get cancelled they come out and apologize for everything they did wrong... why can't They just say "yeah our band name is offensive so we're gonna change it and also the lyrics of this song are negative" idk man whole thing seems kinda vague to me
"Dat Stick" is still a fucking banger
The Edmonton CFL Football team took Eskimo out of it's name a couple of years ago.
"these are offensive so please use these words" "I can't even try to say that or I'll get it wrong (and probably offend someone)"
