      THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’m an “oldie that needed reminding”🤔😅 Made a hoodie, no pattern for cuff and it needs one. Every other explanation seems to forget there is a beginning to cutting a free pattern for it, etc! Your tutorial is quite complete, I’m so grateful!

      not all cuffs are made with ribbed knit (it does have to be a stretch knit though), that's just what is typically used. :)

    Awesome little tutorial! I'm actually in the middle of sewing the cuffs on to a dolman sleeve top.
    I'm using a cotton jersey stretch knit that's the same fabric as the body of the top. For the cuff I just applied, I followed the instructions on the pattern, which is a beginner's pattern, but the directions were a bit difficult to understand and it said to make sure that the cuff part is sitting against the machine with the sleeve fabric on top. Needless to say, it was pretty hard to do, but somehow I did it lol.
    You're tutorial and tips are way easier than the pattern instructions so I'll be doing the other cuff your way.
    Thanks for such an easy to understand video 😊

    I have a brown jacket that at the end of the sleeve it had a elastin band and the same fabric from the jacket covers over it. It bunches up. I don’t like the way it looks. It was a gift from my mom. So I’m gonna add a ribbed cuff. I think it will look so much better. Thank you for the video.

      You don't have to. You can also do a twin needle stitch if you prefer. I'm just afraid a regular straight stitch will make it less stretchy

    Please explain why you use a zigzag stitch to sew the cuff to the sleeve. It's interesting that when you turn the sleeve right-side-out, it doesn't look like a zig zag. It looks like a straight stitch. Thank you!

    • @OdeToFoliage
      @OdeToFoliage 7 років тому +2

      The zigzag stitch allows for some stretch, where a straight stitch wouldn't have any give and you could break the thread easier.

    My sewing machine does not have a zigzag option. I can only sew straight stitch. I have had this cut off sleeve with a amazon cuff to attach to it. I am afraid to try and attach it with a straight stitch. What do you think? is this doable? I am 69 and afraid to even begin. Any advise on how to do this adding a cuff to a t-shirt with straight stitch? August 27, 2024 Janet

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  5 років тому

      you can try a lesser presser foot tension or even better use a walking foot. Otherwise, you get the dreaded wavy fabric.

    When hemming a sleeve on baby shirt, I turned it inside out and then sew the lower layer of fabric. I don't know any proper technique for sewing such small openings with knits and this way I found it easier to not stretch the fabric.

      Here a kind of thicker jersey, called patent (not sure if it's the same in english though) is used a lot, especially with children's garments as you can get pretty much any colour or pattern. It's not obviously ribbed, but it has enough stretch that it works.

    How would you add this to a faux fur jackets sleeves?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  5 років тому

      if you're using a knit cuff, you would still stretch the cuff to fit the bottom of the sleeve. When the cuff relaxes, it'll gather the fur fabric. The only thing I might do differently is to trim the fur in the seam allowance area to cut down on bulk. We have a tutorial showing tips for working with faux fur, so you might want to check it out on our channel.
