For those watching, it should be mentioned that after you take the measurement for the neckband, multiply it by 0.85 (which is 85%) to get the new measurement. If you use the regular measurement the neckline will still out, fold over and refuse to stay flat. Stretch fabrics have a mind of their own when I first started copying clothes I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how to do the neckband.
@@saramccracken5342, I use a small (narrow) zig zag stitch (03 on the Brother Project Runway CE-5000PRW). It has the appearance of a straight stitch but allows for stretch.
@@lisafeldmann9863thanks for replying! I don't have a Brother so could you possibly take a close up photo with a ruler nearby? I don't understand" the appearance of a straight stitch"
Sara mcCracken A very narrow zigzag stitch will stretch, but will not be too wide (as would the width we think of when we typically consider a zigzag stitch) to prevent the seams from functioning as they would if a traditional straight lock stitch were used.
You are a great instructor! I can follow your teaching easier, than most videos made in my mother language. No blah blah, no disturbing music, clear step by step explanations, everything at a beginner friendly pace. Keep on your fantastic work. Regards from Germany 🇩🇪
Totally agree! It's so annoying when people add music to an instructional video! If we want to listen to music while someone is teaching us something, We can turn our own music on!
I am an experienced sewer and watch sometimes instructional videos just for fun, always interested how other people do 'their stuff'. Well...your video is absolutely GREAT. No big fuss, straight to the point, easy to follow. Now I have to watch more of your videos, lol.

Great great and great! I’ve been sewing for more than 60 years and I am still learning! I never thought of using a tracing wheel for outlining sleeves and necklines . I am always inspired by fresh new ideas. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Fantastic tutorial, thank you! I'd like to have seen the final t-shirt though. And perhaps someone wearing it. P.S. at the minute mark around 9:43 when you sweep the excess paper away, I cringed because you didn't close your rotary cutter and I visualized something I've done before...while sweeping something away I brushed the rotary cutter and sliced my hand open. It was pretty severe because I had a new blade in, and it taught me to always close the blade before I lay it down. Even if I'm getting ready to pick it back up to use, always close the blade. Anyhow, just wanted to say what a great teacher you are, and thank you!!
I haven’t even finished it yet and already it’s better than the tutorials I’ve seen on copying shirts. That sleeve detail and the seam allowances must make one hell of a difference.
I'm a seasoned seamstress. I have worked in costume shops, sewed for people, and been sewing for about 40 years. This was still amazing and such good instruction!! THANK you!
I've watched so many tutorials of how to sew a short sleeve top but those were so hard to follow. However you did an amazing job by teaching it very clear and in an easiest way. Hope to see many vedios like this in the future. Good luck!! 😘😘
Mimi G - this was a FANTASTIC tutorial! I'm just getting into sewing. I bought a used pattern and was overwhelmed. Your tutorial was much easier to understand. Thank you!
I’ve always wanted to see my own clothes! I use to watch project runway as a teen. I absolutely love your tutorials. Your step by step instructions are amazing and makes making any garment that can seem impossible possible. I’m in love with SEW IT ACADEMY.
This video was so well produced and with excellent instruction that I archived it in order that it will be in a secure place. And I am a very particular dude. So audio levels, lighting and camera are all good. If this is a sample of the level of instruction and production you provide - this is superb.

I just saw this on my recommendation & I’m so glad I did!! I used to be able to sew and really enjoyed it. I have been wanting to get back into it & you are a great teacher! Thank you.
Know what I use sometimes? Wide drawer liner paper from dollar store. Cheap and thick. Holds up well. If I love the pattern then I trace it on the liner paper and punch a small hole on top of pattern pieces and combine all pieces on a shower hook for storing on a hanger, LOL works
I’m loving your videos. I was wondering if you might include thread, needle, tension, stitch and presser foot you use in your videos? It could be helpful for beginners.
diana diamond multiply the length by .85 to get the new length. This will ensure the proper neck fit. Ex. If the total measured band length is 12 inch. Then 12 x.85 = 10.2 inch. This works perfectly for knits, due to the stretch. Good luck.
This is such an awesome video. I am a beginner and need all the help I can get. You explain everything so nicely. It is hard for me to find something that fits good so when I do, it is wonderful to know how to duplicate it myself!
Hi! Great instruction video, thank you! I like to make my own patterns and templates from freezer paper! Cut the freezer paper to the appropriate size needed! Mark the pattern on the freezer paper and cut it out! It’s the waxy-backside of the freezer paper that goes down on the fabric, then when it’s ironed, it sticks perfectly and peels off easily leaving no damage or residue on the fabric and can be reused many times! Be sure to use your fabric’s correct ironing temperature!! Don’t mind if the freezer paper gets a little, “tanned”!! 😉 (Optional: Cut TWO appreciate sized pieces of freezer paper then iron the two layers together by laying one piece over the top of the other; the shiny-wax, BACK-SIDE goes over the top of the dull, FRONT-SIDE! This makes a thicker more manageable pattern piece!) Happy sewing! 😃

I can get her body measurements from things that fit her and add the fashion components she likes.

I believe it's because the front is curved to allow for better range of forward motion, and because a person's back is generally flatter than their front. This UA-camr (withwendy) explains for the asymmetry in a similar video around 2:30 and 3:30: ua-cam.com/video/KeJjB-bdzuI/v-deo.html
I have never thought of using a tracing wheel to copy onto paper. We were taught to use a tracing wheel to copy from paper onto fabric using (fabric grade) copy paper. I know a tracing wheel is handy in making holes into paper (that make it much easier to fold and pull apart). Thank you.
To reduce the slippage of the weights while on the paper you can spritz some sewing adhesive or spread some rubber cement on one side so that they have some resistance to wanting to slide on the smooth paper. Use taped grocery bags/newspaper to trace, wallpaper or the paper stuffing that comes in Amazon shipments. Just iron the crumpled up paper a bit. If you do not have a tracing wheel use a needle or pin to punch through the fabric of an existing garment seam line that you want to record on th4 pattern that you are creating.
You make it look so simple. The shirts I have to buy, being a large woman, are expensive. Maybe I can do this. I have a sewing machine that I usually sew crafty things and quilts. Thanks for sharing.

I love this video. I do have one comment, t-shirts have different measurements for the sleeves curve for the front and back. Less curve in the back, more in the front. The curve of the sleeves is also different in the front and back. That way the t-shirt will have a better fit.

I really want to try this as my favorite t's are quit expensive. I noticed you didn't add a seam allowance when you did the neck of the back pattern piece. Is that correct or should I add the 1/2" as you did in the neck of the front tshirt pattern piece?
Hello. I noticed that also. Here I was scrolling down to see if someone else asked the question because I wanted to get started on the project and didn't want to wait for a reply. I'm disappointed that nobody replied to you. Now I can't get started. Did you ever do the project? How did it come out?

I really want to try this as my favorite t's are quit expensive. I noticed you didn't add a seam allowance when you did the neck of the back pattern piece. Is that correct or should I add the 1/2" as you did in the neck of the front tshirt pattern piece?
Hello. I noticed that also. Here I was scrolling down to see if someone else asked the question because I wanted to get started on the project and didn't want to wait for a reply. I'm disappointed that nobody replied to you. Now I can't get started. Did you ever do the project? How did it come out?
@@sobosewer3319 I think the lack of half inch at the back was to allow for the ribbing neck.
This is such a good tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm a new subscriber

New subscriber here! You made this look so easy, I think I will tackle it! I have made quilts, baby clothes, and skirts, but never a tee shirt. Today's the day, lol. Thanks for the tutorial and for explaining everything so well!
Great video!
I haven't sewn a garment in 15 yrs and I would have totally messed up the seam allowances.
Thanks for the video, I am going to subscribe right now😊
Don't forget to add that seam allowance to the BACK neck opening before you cut. Great demo btw!
