Porsche Taycan 4S EV Is A Silent Supercar! (And Goes Much Farther Than You Think).

- The 2020 Taycan 4S is the “affordable” all-electric Porsche. What’s it like to live and travel with this high performance EV and its EPA-rated range of 203 miles? For starters, that number is way off. And the Taycan has Porsche’s 800V charging system for super quick fills. Tom Voelk checks out both the Taycan and Electrify America’s 350kWh charging system and shares some real world experience.
Special thanks to Martin Campbell and Rob Callero for all of their work in helping with running footage. You guys rock!

I know many ev enthusiasts complain about the price of this and compare this to a Tesla and how they can get more performance from a Tesla which is much cheaper than this....but listen, Porsche didn't make this EV for EV enthusiasts, Porsche made this EV for Porsche Enthusiasts who need an EV....
Bingo👌🏻 Just parked after doing 618km in 7hrs51minutes of driving and 76minutes of “fast” charging at a measly 50kW charging station which is what’s available her in northern Norway. Car is just fantastic, and as Tom says: I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to ICE car for a daily. I might even sell the 991.2 as the Taycan betters it in all aspects, except for the all out fun part.
Great review!
991.2 SOLD!
SUCH A GOOD WAY TO PUT IT. Bravo.
I doubt any porsche enthusiast NEEDS an ev but if that overcomes how silly you seem overspending for a porsche badge then go ahead and do it. Trust me no one will be jealous but will you look like a jackass with your foolish pride..
@@WUTaNIGGAiAM well I’m a serial 911 owner for years, and sold off 2 911’s and my Opel Insignia daily driver, and replaced all 3 with a Taycan. You see, that way I could brim my bank account with loads of 💰, and in the same breath save like 98% of the running costs compared to the upkeep of the 3 cars. Besides the Taycan, as all EV’s in 🇳🇴 , are so heavily subsidized without VAT and any luxury taxes, so the Taycan was like 60000USD cheaper to buy than a comparable boring Panamera or Cayenne😉 And probably to your surprise, I can add that the Taycan drives better than the 991.2 I got rid of at an horrendously overprice as the buyer just had to have a manual car in Miami Blue. The antiquated 964Turbo we needn’t even mention how awful the drive was and the insane amounts of premium unleaded it gulped away when on boost🤭
So now who’s the Jackass??😂😂😂😂
There’s no shortage of competent auto channels, but, IMO, nobody does it better than Tom Volk.
"One of the best cars I've ever driven". That sums it all up, Tom! How many HUNDREDS of different vehicules have you driven in your lifetime? I start saving today to put 150 K in the bank and buy one!
Well done and to the point. I have the 4s for a couple of months and love it. My 93.4 kWh battery get 280miles on a full charge. Must have been a new update.. previously it was around 200miles. Using my 15y old son’s learners permit app as a mileage counter.. I get a little over 300miles on normal mode. Haven’t tried on Range mode yet. My wife has a 2020 Tesla model S.. that gets 375 on a full charge.. on Trip setting it goes to 388. I’m embarrassed by the build quality of the Tesla for being a $92k car. You are a better man then me Tom, I had to compare the two. Not sure what the fanboys are fanning about... the tech, yes... the panel gap, the rattling, the awful sound system while in the back seat, the wind noise, more plastic then a Taycan! Ha. Love your channel.. new subscriber.
Has your wife actually gone 350+ miles without charging? It's one thing to say what the range says, it's another to actually do it without re-charging. Are these mileage with multiple people and weight, or just one person? I regularly go on 1K to 7K drives (for fun) with multiple people...that is why I'm asking...as other owners do indeed re-charge every 2-3 hours to avoid the slow charge time for charging to full from near empty...and potential long wait due to malfunctionsing charger or long lines.
@@WaywardAnalysis You don't charge from empty to full on a road trip. That is not how it is done.
The real range is more like 300 miles. But the real problem is Electrify America network and locations don't live up to the quality of the car.
Boarded up after the big “demonstrations.” 😂
Who would ever choose the poorly made Tesla Model S over such a car as this? With this car, you get the Porsche heritage legacy and German made quality, vs. the Indian made Tesla from Fremont CA. Only some ignorant Tesla cult member would choose a Tesla. I think your review was terrific. You're good at this. DeMuro could learn a thing or two from you Tom!
Kinda feel like this should have been the Panamera.
Flawless review of a truly electrifying car, Tom!!! Thanks for your upload!!!
Great review, Tom! Completely agree with your closing comments 👍🏽
I truly enjoy watching the content you continuously put out. No matter the amount of reviews that crowd my feed when an embargo lifts, I always look forward to your take.
Tom Voelk is second to none when it comes to auto channels. I am always impressed with the quality, consistency and knowledge that you bring in each video. You deserve a larger following. You have the accolades to prove you’re the real deal. Keep it up!
Love the starship enterprise whir upon acceleration. Great review and as usual nice production quality. Thanks for the hardwork.
Great review. Will be looking forward for more reviews from you in the future as well. Looks like you love to do them.
Man, waiting for you to do this for a long while~
Nice work
Such a great car.... it's a shame I can't afford it. Great review man.
Pre owned, give it a few years man, don't lose hope. I'll depreciate.
yup shame. And crazy how we love in a world where the people who can are not watching youtube nor do they have the time for it.
A brilliant review Tom, if I had the money, I would buy one too. 💗❤️
If you had money? Me too.
Just discovered Tom’s channel and can’t believe that I hadn’t seen this before. Really excellent review and a seriously great car; shame it’s out of my league.
Welcome to the channel. Tell your friends. Your dog. Your goldfish. Anyone.
Smooth and very slippery!! (2.2 Drag) Thanks Tom! Even looks great in the rain!
Hi Tom, my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting you in Seattle soon after we got our BMW i3 (which we still have and love) when you were testing an i3. Your review of the i3 was spot on. Now we’re considering a 4S, and your review and photography are very helpful! Thank you.
Thanks Tom! I like the green-yellow-red light quick summary.
Most honest and by far the best taycan review Ive seen.
It’s stunning, what the panamera should have always looked like!
Great work Tom! Greetings from Norway.
You folks are killing in the EV market. Interesting.
Thanks for the video Tom!
Hi Tom, brilliant video! I very much appreciate your attitude and objectivity.
Tom you deserve at least 1 mil subs I’m serious, thanks again
A brilliant review Tom, if I had the money, I would buy one too. 👍👍
Wow, an american that pronounces Porsche and Taycan correctly. Instantly subscribed!
Thanks for the Deep Dive, great job!!
Every now and then I like to watch review videos of cars I'll never be able to afford. Only reason I watched this one is because I enjoy your content so much.
Cheers.
The Taycan has a "very particular set of skills".. Skills that make it a nightmare for its competitors 😎
Skills that it acquired over years of making one of the "best vehicles ever made"
Thank you so much for this brilliant review! 👍
this was the most informative video I’ve watched about the Taycan
Thanks Tom. Really good review.
Thanks Tom - enjoyed the review.
Hey Tom! Love your reviews. Porsche's InnoDrive system is available on the Taycan, and is a pretty great driver assistance system. Not quite to the level of SuperCruise or AutoPilot, but it will do most of the steering for you and handle all stop and go traffic for you. Glad you got such awesome range out of it!
I have always respected your reviews since years. When you changed the "Evil Twin's" shoes for this review, my respect for your work has gone up even more.
So glad you're such an impartial (aka not a Tesla fan boy) reviewer ! I love the 'DO THE RESEARCH' comment as well.
Tom, you are the coolest car reviewer out there. Continued success my friend.
Another great and relevant review. Unobtainium pricing aside, your closing statements were very high praise indeed. Probably not one in my future though. I still enjoy the rumble of dino juice. Maybe look at a PHEV for running short errands which is most of what we're doing during this pandemic. Stay healthy!
Awesome review 👍
Excellent review! Someday, I may be able to afford it.
I’m seriously considering a Taycan ! I’m about ready to unload my 2013 G550 as much as I love it the fuel bill is a bit outrageous and installation of a home charger would be easy for me . I’m going to get out and take one for a test drive . Great review! Thanks
Tom you crack me up. I love your reviews. This car is my favorite EV of all time. Way more cool than any Tesla. I am burned out already on Teslas. They are a yawn to me. Porsche is quality and you pay for it. They give you an experience that Tesla can only dream about. The delivery woes and quality issues Tesla has to grapple with is shameful. It is built very stoutly as the IHHS crash tests attests. But Porsche to me is ultimate cool. I cannot believe I am saying that coolness is beyond just performance. I am wanting one of these very much. Great video as always Tom!
Tom, your videos are top notch. I see why you have won numerous awards. Deservedly so. Congratulations! You are the most trustworthy and down-to-earth automotive UA-camr that I have seen. As for electric cars, I have not had the chance to drive one. I have been in several EV taxis, and while almost all of them have been Prius models, the silence (or should I say absence) of motor/drivetrain noise is impressive. Tom, if you happen to read my comment, can you answer this: do the shortcomings in the interior improve on the more expensive Taycan models? It does look plasticky for a vehicle in this price range. But it's still pretty cool. Thanks for the great work that you and you assistants do! 👍
Well, after those kind words how can I not respond Michael? I think the Taycan looks great inside. Generally, Prius models look like they stole the plastics from Rubbermaid. There was some trim in the Porsche that I though was on the plasticky side but overall, the fit, finish and grade of the materials is quite nice. You'll have to look at the various cars to see what you like. The new Nissan Ariya looks like it will be well appointed. Cheers!
@@DrivenCarReviews Thanks Tom! I hadn't heard of the Ariya, but I checked and Yup! You have a preview of it 😊 I will now go watch it now (it looks great).
great video and I love the Taycan! I have only seen a few on the roads soo far (I cant get away with how low they are when they drive past)
Yeah, they're really slinky in person aren't they?
@@DrivenCarReviews Very! Definitely eye catching and distinctive!
Great review; always fun to watch. What is the Volkswagen e-golf like?
Great review. Nicely subjective and honest review... 👌
Great job !
Excellent, excellent review as usual. If money was no object, the Taycan would be my #1. Also, thanks for the PSA! It’s Tie-con!
Fantastic review
Very nice review
Excellent review! One of your best yet!! I'm not completely sold on EV's because of price, range and location/condition of charging stations. But the more I watch you and see your passion for EV's, especially the Taycan, I'm getting closer and closer to feeling comfortable with one. Be safe Tom, take care.....
I had a chance to see a Taycan at the Porsche dealer in Faro, Portugal. As Tom says, its a great car to drive, I can say, it looks great!!
Tom, excellent review. Loved hearing your range values and so happy you were able to hit an EA charger with a low SoC and get high speed charging. Note that Porsche InnoDrive with Active Lane Keeping you do get some self driving functionality btw. Also if you select heated seats both front and rear seats are heated. I agree the Race Tex doesn't show well. I selected two tone leather also the Premium and Performance Packages.
Yes, but InnoDrive wasn't on my car (and it's not as good as Super Cruise). I'm one of the few that don't particularly car for Auto Pilot, I've had far too many "squirrel" moment with it. My point was, at this price, the rear seats should have heat. Shouldn't have to upgrade them. Have fun with yours. You'll really like it.
Awesome insights. I’ve always felt The Taycan 4S is the sweet spot in performance value. As a 4 Tesla owner, I am excited for some real competition and I had a 4S Taycan parked next to my Tesla P3D a few weeks ago. It’s wide looks like a panamera but definitely will consider it in future! Want to race some to see that second gear real world benefit...
I dont rly think you can show how good this thing looks on camera. Jesus, saw one today, and i have never seen any car like it. Beautiful.
Very good review
Engine noise or electric motor noise, a Porsche is a Porsche. I have always loved them and hope to own one soon. Great review.
such even and tight panel gaps!
That's unacceptable for .... tesla owners! :-P
...if they slowed their production down a few hundred less cars per day, they might get their panel gaps right...however, Elon is all about production and moving units out the door...he wants, what, 5k per day or something ridiculous...I guess 88% is good enough, right?
They need to focus on just a couple of models without so many variants. If they only made the S and X from 2012 onwards, they would not be known for so many issues
Good review.
In a few years I wanna be able to afford this. Breathtaking car
Would love to take one of these for a test drive
Go to your local Porsche Dealer, if you have one; they will have a demo unit!
Regarding the EA charging, don’t all Taycan purchases include 3 years of unlimited 30 minutes charging sessions?
Great review!! The Taycan put to shame any Tesla interior. Tesla, you may have finally your first competitive vehicle to benchmark.
The exterior styling is good too, but Porsche always makes nice looking cars
Love the depth of your insight Tom! I often skip reviews of cars I researched well (typically anything with a socket, dunno Y ppl call it a plug🤣) but I just like to hear what U personally have to say as U R 1 of the smarter reviewers out there! Doug Alex and Tom are reviewers for the IQ possy😜
Thomas Majchrzak from Autogefühl is also on the list but we have 2 types here: Doug & Tom synthesise. Thomas & Alex analyse but it’s all worth every minute (divided by1.75 in my case)
"Speed Rheostat".....Full Wave Rectification? You are definitely the wordsmith of car reviewers, Tom!
Tom, please add the Applause feature to your channel so I can give you money! Thanks for another great review!
I agree with you Tom. If you haven’t driven an electric car you really owe it to yourself to check one out. Don’t think I’ll ever go back to the old dinosaur combustion engine.
Great video! I love this car! Can we get an A8 review?
10:18 Le Gasp! 13 mph over the speed limit in the rain! Naughty! lol
EV's are not scary. Give one a try guys. The volt is excellent too. Cutting carbon emissions is critical and the cars are terrific.
Great review. Porsche built an impressive car. It's odd how the EPA rating is so much lower than real-world results. I think the EPA may need to adjust their testing procedures for EVs. That charging network should give any buyer pause if they intend to use the car for long trips. Every review I've watched/read that involves using the Electrify America network complains about either the cost, complexity, reliability, etc. I keep waiting for a national fuel chain to begin adding high-speed chargers at their stations.
Thank you Tom for doing your bit promoting EV community!
There's gotta be a subscriber in the Seattle area who owns a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y Performance as a 3rd car (or who doesn't need it for at least 3 days) that Tom can borrow for reviews. Very few people own an EV as their only car (I think). Love the reviews. Keep up the great work Tom! I sometimes watch and re-watch your videos!
It's that plus it's very difficult to get proper information from Tesla. Plus I don't need the aggravation of over reactive owners responding to legitimate criticism. If a company is going to make it difficult for me to do my job, I move on. Don't need the hassle.
@@DrivenCarReviews Wish I had one so I could loan it to you. :)
I enjoyed watching this. It feels like Porsche PR. I'm glad this wasn't playing in a Porsche dealership. I would have purchased and driven away in one. One with no options of course!
Beautiful spec.
Tom makes it feel like my dad is telling me about his car - in a good way!
There's a dad joke in there somewhere...
Porsches are quite reasonably priced all things considered, I know people will say they're expensive but compared to other sports cars and the build quality Porsches are cheap. I specd one just for fun and I got a price of around 90k, I did one to Tesla for comparison and got a similar price and I'd go for the Porsche (if I had the money) as the interior is better than the Tesla and the exterior is way better than the Tesla
I agree, considering the performance and craftsmanship of the Porsche, they are generally reasonably priced for a high quality high performance vehicle. They're still pretty expensive though.
@@DrivenCarReviews in a more middle class kind of way, people will buy them on finance anyway making them even more affordable
Home rates here on Long Island exceed 21 cents/ kWh, so charging in your own garage is still expensive. I’m sure residential rates in your part of the country are less, but please correct me if I’m wrong. Nice thorough video, Tom, as always.
Electric rates can vary dramatically and that is an Achilles heel in the e.v. ecosystem. Utility companies are monopolies in their markets and lacking competition, you have to pay the prices. I know in an idealized world all electricity would be from renewable sources, but unlikely in the near future. The irony about e.v.s is that nuclear power is by far the cheapest method to produce electricity and provide a stable capacity if e.v.s do become widespread. Until then its fossil fuels for the majority of the country.
I think this is quicker than a Model S, a few races on UA-cam.
Oh I miss Portland Oregon!!
I would love one of these. I live in NYC (outer borough, where cars are needed) and antipathy towards private vehicles continues unabated. I doubt I'll ever see a nearby, handy, charging station. Oh well. Maybe a gas/electric hybrid someday. Meantime, I'll soldier on with my aging X3.
Oh: REALLY fine review, comme d'habitude.
Nice video
Love the video so much because having waiting for a detailed Taycan 4s review.
Can i ask if I don’t do much road trips but I drive roughly 100km daily to and back from work, do you think I can just order the 79kwh battery and still enjoy the crazy driving and not worry about the range.
I heard that its best to charge EV cars from between 15%-80% capacity daily is better for the battery life, so if only 80& capacity of the 79kwh, how much range do you think with normal driving daily with a bit of fun here and there would be?
Thank you
If you have a place to charge at home and you don't do long trips it might be just fine. But for resale (which is unknown at this time) most people will want the larger pack.
Tom- Great review. I've sat in this car a couple times. I bumped into the B pillar getting out each time. I haven't seen a reviewer comment on the B pillar's location. Did you notice that the B pillar can be in the way?
I did not have that issue. Neither Rob or Martin mentioned either.
Think of it as a 4-door sports car when getting in and out.
"Affordable" definitely has a different meaning to different people.....I personally have a 99 Porsche 986 boxster with 47,000 miles and paid less than $10,000 now that's "Affordable" to me.
Otherwise it was a nice review Tom......And if I was rich I would definitely have to take a hard look at this car.
Thanks for the review!
Just on point: Porsche has Inno Drive (along with ACC, and Lane Change), which many people who've owned both Taycan and Tesla, feel the Full Innodrive suite's better than Tesla's Auto Pilot. They're both Level 2 Systems.
Sorry, but i'll have to ask who these mythical people are because I've watched youtube videos stating the exact opposite, that Innodrive still needs some serious work.
Understood. I find InnoDrive to be okay, hardly the best. I prefer Super Cruise. Very impressive.
@@DrivenCarReviews
Yeah. The Inno Drive works best when it has the full suite (with Lane Change and ACC). But I have no doubt Super Cruise Control's great as well.
Seeing as BEV's a depreciating like shooting stars is there a way to see if a used 4s has the extended range package from pictures?
I just got that Mission-E is backwards of emission.
Clever, huh? Really a shame that name wasn't used.
@9:47 🤣🤣🤣 share your pain. Every attempt at Subway inches has ended with at least 5yrs WITHOUT
Nothing personal, but Tesla's are cheap. I test drove the Model Y a couple of weeks ago and I was pretty serious about looking into an EV, but it rode like my 10 year old Corrolla, and the door rattled, something my 10 year old Corrolla's doors don't do. The Taycan looks nice, but starting at $103,000 I could buy a nice SUV and tons of gas. No, I would just get a RAV4 Prime or the Lexus version (I think it will be an RX when it comes out). Its not a dedicated EV but, at 40 miles of EV range I could get to work and back, when that runs out I have a very fuel efficient hybrid, and the Toyota reliability is light years ahead of most including Porsche. That being said, if BMW X5 PHEV of the Cayenne PHEV (the cheaper one) ever increased their range a bit, I wouldn't mind giving them another look over.
great video! wow Tesla should give you press cars!
Please kindly be aware the Electrify America charging network needs a lot of work to be able to say it charges reliably. Still this car is absolutely amazing. Just charge it at home... and oh ya... How can I get a 350kw charger at home... Lol
Love it!!!! The 4S is beautiful... The Taycan's are only for the elite driver that wants beauty and performance in an EV.
Obviously electrification is the future of performance cars, and I understand that to continue to have naturally aspirated GT3s the lesser models will likely need to become hybrids to be feasible in 10 years. But this car feels like kind of a compromise to me, not quite big enough to be practical not quite small enough to be toss-able. I’d really be interested in an all electric dedicated coupe/convertible and what Porsche could do if they were chasing Tesla.
Great review Tom. I thought Porsche came out and said official way to say it is "Tie Can" not "Tie Con". Could you confirm again?
Tie-con. I ask every time I do a review. Seriously.
Porsche should bring back the 928s!🥰👍
Yeah, and make them competitors to the BMW 3 Series or 2 Series.
Porsche did make FR (Front-engine, rear-wheel drive) coupes before. I’m sure they can fo it again.
Porsches originally weren’t overpriced, ultra luxury vehicles, they were sports cars you could live with.
Nice review Tom! I would think Tesla would get cars out to as many influencers as possible, especially to the ones who take the time and make great/informative videos like you!
I think its model is to let consumers gush and keep mainstream reviewers away (who would point out quality issues and a big giant screen and limited buttons is a cost saving measure). It has worked for the company.
It appears, Tesla only wants to give their cars out to reviewers who will give them good review, or not give them out at all. Of course, even if/when they don't, many sites who do review individual Tesla's, are part of a referral/reimbursement program for those who buy off their site.
@@msl5253 Tesla doesn't give out cars for review at all. Those people reviewing them bought the car or are borrowing them from an owner.
