The little nugget at the end reminded me of what "the thrill of driving" should be about and giggling at the small joys we have available to us. Thanks for including that Harry, we could all do with moments like these in our lives
Mr. Harry , you've done it again. Superb! The most objective and honest real-world review. The first one who doesn't concentrate only on acceleration. Who the hell buys a car only for stoplight racing??
If you ever wonder about doing the grandson bits, just do it. They make me laugh every time.
He's an adorable little fella, very like my second born. My son would always sit up front with me whilst his brother was at school. He was only 3 at this time and would give me directions and we'd play observational games.
Many years ago I was motoring along near home when a car, which I was following from a distance, and gaining upon and fully intended to overtake, suddenly went to turn right into a factory yard, with no indication other than his brake lights as he turned.
I quickly stamped on the brakes and on off, on off so as to retain some control and aimed my car to fit in between the grass verge with sign post, street lamp post and hopefully not hit anything. I was going over the limit though and so my car did lock up and my son was excitedly squealing "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" and I eventually halted very closely to a speed limit order sign with my engine still running. I sat for a couple of seconds just gathering myself, I put my hand on little Eddie's knee and said "Are you alright, Ed?" And he replied "Yeeah can we do it again Mummy?"
It put a massive smile on my face, my fearless son (he's 23 now). I went back the next day and saw I'd left masses of rubber from my tyres and thankfully that following week the roads were surface dressed with tar and loose gravel. I'd have had no control of where I stopped if they'd already top dressed it before my lock up.
Likewise. Made me like the video.
Which motor is in this one?
Very sweet little lad
@@GenaF Makes you think when stuff like that happens! My oldest still remembers me taking him down an industrial back road and doing burnouts and donuts with him and his brother in the back giggling their heads off - perfectly safe of course but when my wife found out I caught hell so even though he still asks me to, I haven't ever done it again.

Love this. Its like seeing my dad playing around with a new gadget, sad that younger generations won't be able to fully appreciate this tech
Not having to have a million apps on your phone for each company offering charging would be a game changer yeah.
Govt have said all new chargers need to take contactless which is nice. Other chargers I've tried with contactless are still more hassle than Instavolt though. I don't know why they think they need me to go though some stupid menu. There's only two steps involved - plugging in and tapping the card. If I have to do any more than that it's a failure of user interface design.

We need a lot more analysis from the back seat driver.

The new hatchback version has plenty of room
As a Taycan owner who watches most of the UA-cam videos on this topic, Harry's review is one of the best. A few comments. (1) Range is dependent on many factors, and in the Taycan, regenerative braking is disabled for a few hundred miles in new cars to ensure brake bed-in. The range calculator also learns from your driving behavior. Harry reported range through two charging cycles, which is well within these limitations. (2) Harry's video has a constant level of road noise throughout. Note that the optional thermal and sound insulated glass option gives the Taycan possibly the quietest car interior ever made. (3) Cargo capacity is improved by the roof rack mounting system available with the panoramic glass roof. This system is compatible with Thule components, such as bicycle, cargo, and canoe mounts. Note also that the seats fold down, and with the optional center rear seat, there is a ski pass-through fold down between two rear seat occupants. The outer rear seats have child seat attachment points as Harry demonstrated. (4) The interior refinement that Harry comments upon is upgradeable to the point that the Porsche Taycan won the World Luxury Car of the Year award for 2020. In the UK, tax incentives for electric vehicle lease or purchase penalize the purchase of options, so we see extremely frugally optioned Taycans in UK reviews that are lacking in interior refinement.
Best bit is always the smile on the Grandson’s face when the speed kicks in and the words “Again!” Nice work Harry!

"how do I get it to stop charging' definitely don't press stop charging 😂
To be fair there is usually more to it than just pressing stop charging, otherwise there's nothing stopping any random person stopping your charging, hence needing to tap your card too.

I'm guessing that little man is going to be a car fan when he's old enough! Super cheeky laugh. Love it.
Great videos! One question: If your realistic range is approx 230 miles and according to the charger, you had 54% left in the battery, the estimated time to charge the remaining 46% was estimated at taking 1hr 11mins, that would mean in order to charge from an almost flat battery it would take about 2hrs 20 mins for a 460 mile range. I may have made a mistake in my maths but that's not what I would call a realistic charging time, especially if ALL the vehicles on the road have to be fully electric. The queues at charging points would be horrendous. Also, it takes me approx 10 mins to visit the garage and top up with diesel, which with a full tank gives me 400 miles. In the time it takes an electric vehicle to charge, I could cover approx 140 miles, which is more than half way between London and Penzance. I'm sorry, but in my opinion electric vehicles are not the answer. This in no way detracts from the great videos you produce.
Filling 0-10% is ultra fast and then it get slower the more charge the battery has. 0-80% charge speed is more important and that will take 15 minutes-ish at high power chargers and will definitely be done over night at home.
Also you took the time stat from before the speed warmup, it takes it 5ish seconds from the start of charging to hit full speed.
The charging speed is slower when the battery temp is low. A temp below 10c will significantly impact range and charging speed.
Good thing we live in the UK then . . .

You’ve nailed the pluses and minuses perfectly Harry. I couldn’t get over how terrible the packaging is for a taller (6’2”) gent like myself. The worst was how hard it was to wedge myself between the steering wheel and b pillar. It was pretty poor, to be honest. And the interior space is tighter than my Model 3.
When my Model 3 was totaled earlier this year, I had a choice to make. I came close to ordering a Taycan 4S, but for the same price, I got a Model 3 Performance AND a 25k mile 997 Turbo S. The depreciation on a Taycan is likely to be eye watering. And to be honest, although it goes down the road and feels like a Porsche, it doesn’t shade the Model 3 nearly as much as I thought it would. Add in the aSupercharging network and I passed on the Porsche. Yeah, I miss not having that beautiful build quality in my daily driver. And the Porsche ride / handling. But when I get in my 997 Turbo, that seems to all fade...

Great work sir!
When talking about range, what's the ambient temperature like? If the video is recent it should be pretty cold, which explains why the range is lower.
The batteries and inverter are heated/cooled. So this shouldn't effect it.
The model s frequently does far worse than its epa rating whilst the Taycan always beats it. Tesla numbers don’t match real world
I used to have an electric mx-bike- that thing would run less than half when it got colder
This is something that I've been wondering about. What would the real world range be here in the UK from November to March given almost all commuting would be done in darkness and when it's cold and raining?
Great review as always. I am a builder/developer used to own a RR and a Q7 and a Cayenne because I thought I needed the carrying space, as I have a dog and two kids. However I changed to a normal saloon some 4 years ago and frankly I haven't once missed the space, I can simply fold the seats down for longer things and if its really big I would always do mail order or hire a van for the day. So on that point I just don't agree, they may sell more SUV'S because of good marketing but I genuinely don't think they offer truly more usable space that we actually need (unless you have large dogs).

Great entertaining video as always from Harry. Thanks for that. I have had Taycan 4S with smaller battery now little more than 3 months. Beautiful car, enjoyed every moment! Couple of more good things what I can add when driving car quite a cold weather in Finland lately. To charge fast and not to increase consumption you need to use heating systems before you go. Easy to use through app. You can see battery temperature from the gauges and when its less than +10C the charging speed as well as consumption is worse than promised until then temperature increase. More than +20C battery temperature and you will get those numbers as promised. I have driven now +8000km and average consumption is 19,4kWh/100 km ~400km range. Not bad. Also as this small battery Taycan is 150kg less weight than Turbo S, I'm more than happy not to tick the big battery option. Many others I did instead. Cheers!
Excellent. Good to see someone making an electric car you would want to drive.
That's why it's one of the best electric cars out there.
Now if they could make it affordable.
Great video Harry. Your summary is spot on. They have missed a trick as you say and should have launched a fast estate 1st. Insta are great (they and polar are all I use) and if they had eked out a 300 mile range (in lieu of a lack of tesla super charger speed and convenience- in the uk ) they have hit the sweet spot. Right now, in the uk, a small £35k 250 mile range - ie Hyundai kona is the sweet spot if you don’t want a M3 - tesla Does 95% of what you need.
Exactly. Seems exclusivity will still be a thing in the EV world, and now, looking forward to it.
It certainly will be exclusive, comsidering there isnt even enough global lithium to have full adoption in the USA.
Nice to see tires that have some decent sidewall width to provide a more comfortable ride.
"Why has it taken so long" exactly Harry, good to hear Instavolt have got it right. As far as Teslaesque goes (a) the Tesla Supercharger would have been on the sat nav along with confirmation of bays free which as you know would you never have to wait with Tesla. (b) Charging would have been easily twice as fast, there is a lot of integration between charger and car, there's gonna be, they make both.
Impressed with your thoughts on the Porsche Taycan, of course Im biased Tesla Model S owner but mountain bikes chucked in the back and used to Tesla huge range and low price.
But there's the Tesla build quality elephant in the room, otherwise I'd agree that the Porsche is a rich man's posing pouch whereas a Model S is a rich man's practical electric solution with change to spare.
Let's face it though, all EVs are just too danged expensive and all have some compromise or the other.
Me, I'm waiting for a Searl Effect Generator powered vehicle, now if only that was factual, one could plug it into your house when not driving to do away with mains electricty and gas for power. Some dream that would be.

You can prepare your battery for charging on the journey to the charger. The system can be put into this navigate-to-charge mode and it will heat the battery up to a temp that will allow a much faster charge rate when you arrive. Charging still takes far too long to be practical and the charge port OS seems to be laggy.

Lovely review Harry, thanks. Can you believe I asked Porsche for a 4S to test Berlin->Amsterdam at speed and they instead gave me a Turbo S? Haha talk about overdelivery. About your InstaVolt charging session: the cable your machine used is not liquid cooled and will therefore never go over 80/90kW which is strange (to outfit these pretty chargers with these lacking cables).
They can upgrade them to make these chargers more future proof, even the ID.3 (and e-tron and so on) would profit from retrofitting of liquid cooled cables. Wouldn't be the first company to do so. I will write them on LinkedIn!
Is it only me, or making touch screen, tablet actually, is cheaper then making high quality buttons. I understood that it would be too much buttons on car like this, but putting all in tablet, Tesla like, turns me off. Give me one good button dannit!
Correct, touchscreen is a much cheaper hardware than switches. And so are the LCD/LED screens vs. real gauges.
Awww bless, what a lovely little lad, gave me a right smile that bit at the end
The higher the state of charge, the lower the charging speed. This explains the speed you got.
The temperature of the battery can also affect it. Charging at too high a current when too hot or too cold will damage the battery, so it knows to limit the incoming power. The 125kW is probably when everything is at optimum conditions
The battery can take 270kW max
And the fact that it said "125KW Shared" which suggests it's shard across all of the charging points.
It's not the whole story this time. If you check my video you can see the Porsche easily does 100kW+ when way over 70% SoC even. You do need liquid cooled cables though, unfortunately this charger doesn't use those right now. Let's hope they still plan on upgrading.
@@electricfelix liquid cooled cables? Does the standard not allow for sufficiently thick cabling?

£2.50 for 23 miles of charge is shocking. Combine that with the low availability of charging stations and lengthy charge times (compared to petrol) and I still don’t see any incentive to go electric, especially away from cities.
You will have no choice in 10 year all new cars being made will be electric.
if you do less than 200 miles a day, as most people do then charging at home will be considerably cheaper, Instavolt 35p kwh - Octopus Go 5p kwh. I covered nearly 3000 miles on an EU roadtrip which cost £150
As he said in a couple videos- there's Tesla and there's everybody else. If you are considering a Tesla, there is 0 worry about charging or long delays on huge trips.
@@thelifeofbatteries2603 how can instavolt justify 35ppkwh? That’s crazy, but like you we charge (our Tesla) at home and only use Tesla superchargers so far. I’m dreading using non Tesla on our summer road trip
Instavolt is a great solution at 35p kWh and growing quickly. But the IONITY network is growing too and the charge costs for Taycan owners is 30p per kWh for 3 years and of course they are 350kW. Also for fast charging before you get to the station you select preheat on the battery and you gain the fastest charge times. All aids to improving the experience. There is lots to learn and Porsche have made the experience easy.
Milk Float springs to mind with that sound.
Nice looking car, certainly prettier than a Tesla. Build quality light years ahead!
Thanks for sharing it. 👍🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I'm not sure how excited I would be to pull up to one of those stations, start charging with ease...and then learn I had 1 hour and 11 minutes until full? How is that comparable to your current petrol experience?
Hey Harry, great video as usual, can you please do the X5 45e update please?
Nice video. The seat being tucked behind the B pillar is for safety, the low roof line opens up with the panoramic roof, and the charging speed didn’t reach 125 kw because the battery wasn’t low enough. All chargers slow as you pass ~80% and approach 100% to preserve battery health. Best charging behavior for better “fast charging” to to charge between ~20%-80% then you’d get that 125 kw. Great stuff. New subscriber hoping for more EV content.
That whine reminds me of when I was a boy and had a job helping out on a milk round. The electric milk floats made that noise.
In reality, you very quickly get used to only taking what you need to get to (or to and from) your destination - if you wait for it to go to 100% it will take ages as most EV's go into their cell management routines from around 85%.
In terms of cost, £2.50 for 23 miles - I suspect there was an initiation charge there somewhere, but still if your petrol car averages circa 45mpg, that's not too bad - and there ain't many cars with that level of performance delivering that 45mpg or so. Thank god the charging infrastructure has evolved as that was one of the main reasons I reverted to petrol from EV (for now!). Good review again Harry - liked that!
Not quite as easy as filling up with fuel when you have to wait 2hrs for a 'tank', a small 'tank' at that.
This is why you “fill up” at home and only charge a little if you have to charge away from home.
@@marcsroberts most people can drive for 9 hours or more with one short break for a meal. Petrol cars are perfect for trips. EVs are pretty useless
@@jonny_amg6823 exactly. Before covid i used to take trips from zagreb to berlin with no stopping except for 2 minutes to get gas and smoke a cigar. Thats 1000km. Used to do zagreb to paris with some friends too with no stopping.
@@marcsroberts but all the saving made from using ev is lost on buying coffee and snacks while waiting.
@@tnikoli40 yeah, exactly, that's how it works. Let's say some people finish work at 4pm and they leave for holiday at 5pm and they can still reach their destination which is 800-1000km away on the same day. Most of these EV fans seem to be people with houses, garages and loads of time, even though they complain about the time spent on filling up a car with petrol. Ridiculous
Nice plug for Car Industry Analysis, hidden gem of a page.
I daily drive an e-tron. Instavolt are head and shoulders above every other network for experience, reliability and speed. I don’t bother with anything else now.
My in-laws in the UK say the exact same thing: Instavolt is miles ahead of the competition and very close to Tesla.
Nice recharge site near to my work HQ in Woodstock. So glad to see it working well. This is the future!
26 miles for £2.50 seems quite expensive...?
works out to around 60mpg which for a car like that is outstanding
@@thelifeofbatteries2603 agreed, it is a great car, still room for improvement, but that wasn’t the point. The charge was very costly, quick but expensive, worrying trend for the future.
But you'd be happy if a taxi driver charged you £2.50 for a 26 miles journey? Just wondering.....
@@Brian-om2hh absolutely, but what about his time, wear and tear, depreciation, insurance, tax, servicing? This is just the cost of the fuel and it’s comparable to diesel/petrol if you do about 45-50mpg?
2:55 i thought the CW-value and the frontal area are different elements in a formula. So CW x frontal area is a car’s real measure of wind resistance.
.. “CD”
If ever a car didn't need an electric boot opener, it's that one!
When he said the car's sound reminded him of being on the Tube, Northern Jubilee line, I lost it, LOL. That was hilarious.
I like how there’s so much sidewall on show.
Not very porsche like, but quite good for everything.
stick an extra advert at the end Harry, that way you'll catch the sleepers and indecisive without annoying anyone.
Great Vid Awesome Content!
I'm afraid that in this case the cost of charging is likely to be higher in the future than the cost of gasoline per 100 km
That can't happen the only way that could happen is if the cost of electricity everywhere went up. You do realize it's the same exact electricity that comes from the power grid that powers every single light and every single house and building and business don't you? On top of that what's to say electricity in every single country isn't going to always remain different? Why would you make baseless assumptions with 0 reasoning behind it?
Thar post was made 2 years ago and isn’t far wrong!
Max rated charge is only available when the state of battery is low. As it gets past 60% or so it slows down to protect the battery pack. The last few percent usually takes far longer than rest of it.
15:53 Coulda parked a bit closer to the charging station eh Harry? 😂
I imagine a lot of Taycan drivers are quite shy of the bollards, imagine how much it would cost to fix a ding 🤑
Why, if the cable is long enough? Car doesn't charge faster just because it is closer to the charge point. Neither does your phone, or your laptop. Since the cable is a fixed length.
Irony/sarcasm advisory! lol
Omg... was just scrolling down to write same thing. Not sure I’d park my brand new Taycan 4S as close. Lol.
There’s probably parking sensors at the front
Great video as always. You really have a great take on these electric cars - please do more reviews of them! There's too few true car enthusiasts reviewing them, as opposed to 'gadget reviewers' (that includes people only focused on reviewing electric cars). One question though: this or Tesla Model 3 Performance? Similar concepts (4-door saloons), very similar on paper performance, similar range, ... so is there any way it justifies its (double) price tag? Model S is not the right comparison - that car is twice the size inside.
LOL it really does sound like a tube train, when you open the door does it say "mind the gap"?
Great review and especially good re the charging update. Looks like the infrastructure is finally taking shape. Your grandson stole the show!
High cost of charging and the inconvenience of doubling your journey times.
Then add the cost of sitting in Costa for an hour or two waiting for it to charge - one cold coffee, limp sandwich and a small, hardened cake: £20. :)
Lands end to John o groats - 14 hours of driving, and 1.5 hours charging (at a cost of £44 compared to 70 something for a 60mpg diesel car at 1.17/l) - hardly double the time and considerably cheaper.
Am I missing something?
At £2.50 for an additional 23 miles is approximately 32 to the gallon?
So it’s more expensive to run an electric car than my Audi A7 TDi?
Or have I missed something?
Many thanks, as I fancy the taycan cross.
Mind the gap!! It does sound like a tube now you've said that.
I don’t think I would mind taking a small break to charge up on a long trip down to Cornwall or somewhere. Makes sense to me. Unless I was in a race or time trial
