I have a silk pillow and love it. One advantage I found is that satin makes a crunching noise that keeps me awake when I'm restless, but my silk pillow doesn't do that. Better sleep makes me a happier person!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney Thank you for the reply! Yes, I honestly sleep better on the silk pillowcase. I don't know what magic silk has, but besides not being noisy or cold like satin can be, I also feel it doesn't strip my face from that moisturized feeling I go to bed with after applying my nighttime skincare. I thought it was my imagination, but after a few months of switching from poly-blends and cotton to silk, I've noticed I wake up with more supple looking skin, to the point that I don't have to apply oils or heavy face creams to start my day unless it's the dead of winter. I'm enjoying your videos and learning a lot from you. We have similar curl patterns and thickness, so I like seeing what products work on your hair. I can't use many things other curly girls recommend because they obviously need more moisture and hold than I, and when I try their routines, I end up with limp, weighed-down hair or super-sticky curls. Keep the content coming!
@@opalskycanvas it works differently for different people, I USED TO use leave in conditioner after showering and all it would do is straighten my hair and keep it frizzy. For my 2c hair type i think it just weighs it down. It usually frizzes up a bit when I shampoo it regardless.
The music in this video is so different than I'm used to in Courtney's videos but it was super entertaining since I watch on 1.25x speed LOL. It was so frantic it felt like she was desperately trying to tell us the secrets of silk before time ran out haha.
I also use a silk pillowcase, and you know what, it not only keeps your hair nice, it helps avoid wrinkles!! And no matter what, the real thing (silk instead of polyester, wool instead of synthetic, etc.) ALWAYS performs best!! Love your videos!
My hair dents pretty easily. I find that when I do this or other “pineapple” methods my hair dents and looks bad in the mornings. I have colored hair and have done keratin treatments. I am currently in the transition phase. Could this be the reason why? Is there anything else I could do while sleeping?
Kayla Nido the way I did it: pineapple my hair with a hair tie like she did, wrap a silk scarf around it, tie the scarf, then take the hair tie out so it’s just my hair in the scarf.
I find that these hair ties that are spiralled plastic (the thin ones, not the thick ones like a phone cord) really do work the best. My hair also dents easily, but when I wrap it in my hair I don't overlap the hair tie... I kind of spread it out over, and the "waves" of the Spiral kind of stick into the hair and take hold. If you have really long hair, often just flipping it all over the top of your pillow to the head of the bed works well, too.
Considering that from all your descriptions and videos, your hair seems to be an exact clone of my hair (I have that bottom layer problem too), I guess I'll have to give a silk pillowcase a shot...I'll try to remember and report back on the results. Thanks for the promo code!
Are you able to get it into two or three mini-pineapples, and loosely pin up any back pieces that fall out? That's how I had to do it until I had enough length.
I bought a satin case and it is the worse for my hair as I wake up with my hair plastered to my head. My normal pillowcases, which is a higher thread count, does great so I went back to that. Not sure if silk is the way to go, skeptical after how awful my hair is with satin. I also can't pull my hair up as it is too short.
I like the music. For me I began in summer and tbh I only had hair nets around. Not perfect but does a pretty good job if your hair isn't too long. I am currently looking into silk or satin caps for cooler weather. If my hair was longer. Silk pillowcase is great too.
I am just starting out and after waking up after day one, I definitely need to purchase a silk pillowcase....my hair is super heavy right now though. I clearly have too much product or just need to adjust things....this is gonna get interesting!
I have barely wavy, fine hair that is not quite shoulder length and also has layers so a pineapple do won’t work for me. My hair looks flat and stringy and pretty straight when I wake up on day 2. What other products or solutions might work for me?
A harder hold gel will be your friend. You may have to refresh it (if you want!). It's okay if you cannot go a long time between washing. I have to wash mine every 2-3 days. When you wake up, give it some time to settle. Then flip you head upside down and give the roots a good fluff! Also, have you clarified/deep conditioned recently?
I personally dont want to give into a product, no matter how great, if it involves using any creature for my benefit. Silk as most people know comes from the silk worm.. so as much as its recommended, I'll just be using a satin pillow case. I highly encourage people to look into cruelty free options 💕💜 Good luck everyone on your curly girl journey!
I just ordered two... I have satin ones but this video helped me decide to try the silk because 2nd day frizz is a big issue for me still after 2+ years following a “curly girl” hair care plan. Maybe this will be a big help! 😊 Enjoying your videos very much... just happened upon them a few days ago.
Courtney I’m looking into silk pillow cases and I’m glad I found this video you do have another video talking about another silk company LilySilk and here you talk about myk silk so which brand do you recommend me to get?
I went to the site and was like, why won't this code work!? Then I realized....oh this video is a year old, whoops 😂😂 have you done an update about the pillowcase?
What a lot of people don't realize is that satin is not fabric or a fiber, it's a weave. Silk is a fiber that is then woven into a fabric with different type finishes such as a silk satin, silk charmeusse, silk chiffon, silk twill, etc. You have to really pay attention to the item description when looking for a silk scarf or pillowcase, especially when it says satin. A lot of satin scarves, bonnets, and caps are made of polyester with a satin weave. That's why it's so cheap. Real silk will also have a momme weight listed. Real 100% silk scarves and pillowcases start in the double digits price-wise, usually in the upper $20's to $30's and go up from there. If you're even in doubt about the authenticity of your product, just do a silk burn test (you can google it, you only need a thread to use). I have thinning, baby fine, curly hair and I can't afford to lose a single strand by using a product that's not what it says it is.
Hi courtney! Love your energy! I have a question, how do you fix your curls when you wake up? I wake up an hour before i leave the house to get ready. And i just started scrunching my hair. When i wake up my hair is all messy so i do the routine again like when i just washed my hair. Help pls
I didn't use the satin for 3-4 months - OMGOSH split ends from knots & tangles! And you can double it by cutting pillow case in half & doing same with your regular case. Stitch up & your set ... Needed cotton to keep from chasing the pillow all night.
Are you sure you aren’t selling your hair short by deciding you are just “oily” and can’t extend your washes? In high school I used to wash daily and there was no way I could have gone an extra day without washing - my hair would have been SO OILY! After I graduated college, I found out that washing your hair daily isn’t necessary or good for it and I gradually pushed it out to 3 days. At first it was so hard that my first mini step was a day and a half - I washed in the morning, then night of the next day, then skip a day and wash in the morning again. The only trick is to incrementally increase so that you keep going longer than you did before. I stayed at 3 days for years and years and felt again like that was my “limit” and then since starting curly girl I’ve been working on it again and can get 5 good non-greasy days. My kids honestly don’t need their scalps washed at all - just their hair itself every few weeks when food and dirt gets in it. 😂
my biggest concern with silk pillowcases is the price. i'm planning to get a bonnet while i save up for silk pillowcase, here's hoping i can get one soon.
I am sure you won't see this since this video is 2 years old but I am struggling to know what to do. I sleep with a CPAP so it is possible that there is no hope for me getting good second day hair but if you see this and have suggestions I would love to hear them
I dont understand what you mean by day 17. Everything I've read says you clarify and deep conditioner every month and shampoo(wash day at least once a week) and conditioner every day if you need in the shower.
I have a satin pillow, aint nobody got time to pay for silk LOL... but of course if you get one sent to you for free, great. However I cannot afford a silk pillowcase and we all aren't lucky to have free ones sent to us for free. And I'm in Canada so everything is more expensive here.
I live in Finland and I don't even wanna pay for the satin pillow case! (about 10€) so i just made my own case from an old scarf 😁 I'm trying to find silk from thrift stores now to upgrade my game
Natural fiber makes sense would be better for your hair vs polyester. There would be a breathing quality. Polyester satin creates static, silk wouldn't. Like cotton, silk would be warmer and I wonder if it does like cotton when you turn it over, that's where the cool side is when I'm too hot with cotton. In my ideal world, all of my clothes and bedding would be natural fibers. In my ideal world, I have the money for that too.
Great videos! Which shampoo is your holy Grail? I have wavy hair but I don't follow curly hair method. I would like to find a good sulfate free shampoo. I use shampoo and conditioner when I wash, which is twice a week. (I am protein sensitive).
fitnessneeds oh I see! This shampoo does not contain any sulfates even though it is clarifying so it should be safe for color treated hair. But Inahsi also has an amazing gentle shampoo on their website!
I have very thick, long, curly hair and I now have a silk pillowcase I use, instead of cotton. It is helping, but how do I preserve my curls at night when I have to sleep with a cpap machine. The headgear on the mask totally flattens and smashes my hair down. I'm not sure what to do about that. Any suggestions?
I ordered my invisbobbles and they won't even go round half my hair.. doesn't look like the standard sizes are available here which is a bummer as satin/silk slips out and all other types rip out my hair :( need to tie my hair back as a nurse and also at night (although I could try a scarf) but I can't find anything that will do the job.
So...I haven't found the answer yet. How often DO you wash? You've mentioned the 17 days a couple of times. I get to day 3 to 4 so far and I do use the baby powder (for a long time) and it still doesn't make it that long.
Shelah Dow Art oh me saying 17 days was mostly a joke. I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days. Some people can go a full week without washing their hair. I cannot. My scalp gets too itchy.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney I did do a clarifying wash with the suave and for the first time...4 days and no itch and didn't get suddenly oily either which was nice. Now to just get through this transition phase. Your videos are awesome because you go into the science.

my hair looses the curl when i sleep... i’ve tried putting in a loose bun but the curls look weird and they loose the pattern. i’ve tried wearing a t-shirt on my head but i just wake up without it and my hair almost straight. is there any tips???
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney it's the best! Well I have the cotton underside one because it was cheaper and it doesn't slip off my sheets at all. Great option for budget friendliness and if you're worried about slipping.
I know this isn't related to this particular video but what hair dyed would you recommend for me starting the CG method? I know hit dye can be damaging but I have some grey hair and I'm only 35 years old. So I desperately need to dye it.
I'm so sorry but I"m afraid I don't have any experience with this because I am not coloring my hair at the moment. It is my understanding that most sulfate free shampoos are safe for colored hair because they wont strip out the colors.
I keep seeing folks working with Arctic Fox. I use punky to cover my grays and am fully prepared to do any and all babying to try to mitigate the drying effects.
Do you have any alternative ways that I can sleep with curly hair? When I do the pineapple, my hair is a disaster in the morning. Plus, my hair is layered and some of the layers fall out of the pineapple. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
How do you wash yours? I handwash mine in warm water but find the oil stains don't come out (I've really really oily skin) also I dunno if its a coincidence but as soon as I started using silk, my face broke out really badly then stopped when I had no clean silk left so went back to cotton for a few nights, I haven't gone back to the silk yet to really test it out.
That is really strange! Where did you get your silk pillowcase from? I'm wondering if there was a residue left on it from the manufacturer. I hand was mine in woolite in my bathroom sink. Woolite really seams to clean it very well!
I wash mine. In the washer machine all by themselves. (The ruff friction from tougher fabrics is what messed up my last ones.) That's why they get their own bath. I use soap and a half to a full cup of baking soda. (Depending on if I am cleaning all of them or half. I have 10 satin/silk pillow cases in rotation.) It deep cleans them without fraying them or strip their color. I have very oily skin and an oily scalp. I change my pillowcase weekly to bi-weekly. I dry them in the dryer all by themselves. On low heat with a dryer sheet.
so question i take a shower every night so am i just supposed to wear a shower cap orrr can i wet my hair without washing it with shampoo and conditioner until wash day pls someone helpppp
I think your “satin” case is probably polyester. Satin is not a fabric, it describes the way a fabric is woven. Thus silk threads can be woven as satin as can polyester. So, it’s hard to know what caused the improvement, the weave or the type of thread.
Totally understand! If you watch some of my more recent videos you will notice I have stopped adding background music. Please let me know if that is good and helpful!

Swavy Curly Courtney hahahaha! Well I may just have to break down and get one!
Shauna Ferguson can I just say how much I love your post???? 😍
Jody Akers hahahahaha! Thank you! That's so what I was thinking during her whole video!
How do you get your curls like that
I neeeeeed you. I really wish you could come to my house and help me with my hair. I’m trying but I just can’t get it.
Would the slip scrunchies work for the pineapple? If not totally fine just curious
Or any other silk scrunchies?
my hair looses the curl when i sleep... i’ve tried putting in a loose bun but the curls look weird and they loose the pattern. i’ve tried wearing a t-shirt on my head but i just wake up without it and my hair almost straight. is there any tips???
Eevarosamaria _ the same thing happens to me
I have the same one and it's amazing! silk is so much nicer than satin, 100% worth it. myksilk is so affordable for what it is.
Gisela Rosa oh how cool that you have the same one! Yes I totally agree with you! So affordable!!!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney it's the best! Well I have the cotton underside one because it was cheaper and it doesn't slip off my sheets at all. Great option for budget friendliness and if you're worried about slipping.
I found one at dollar tree silk
I know this isn't related to this particular video but what hair dyed would you recommend for me starting the CG method? I know hit dye can be damaging but I have some grey hair and I'm only 35 years old. So I desperately need to dye it.
Shea moisture has a dye line that should be gentle
I'm so sorry but I"m afraid I don't have any experience with this because I am not coloring my hair at the moment. It is my understanding that most sulfate free shampoos are safe for colored hair because they wont strip out the colors.
I keep seeing folks working with Arctic Fox. I use punky to cover my grays and am fully prepared to do any and all babying to try to mitigate the drying effects.
You should definitely try Arctic Fox. The base of their dye is conditioner, so it won’t dry out you hair.
Do you have any alternative ways that I can sleep with curly hair? When I do the pineapple, my hair is a disaster in the morning. Plus, my hair is layered and some of the layers fall out of the pineapple. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I am actually working on this!
Also, the back of my hair has trouble holding curl no matter what product I use. I've used mousse, gel, etc. Any suggestions?
I love your videos
so question i take a shower every night so am i just supposed to wear a shower cap orrr can i wet my hair without washing it with shampoo and conditioner until wash day pls someone helpppp
Maria Shamim thank you sooo much!
I think your “satin” case is probably polyester. Satin is not a fabric, it describes the way a fabric is woven. Thus silk threads can be woven as satin as can polyester. So, it’s hard to know what caused the improvement, the weave or the type of thread.
Thanks again!! 💜
Whats the song???
HOW R UR CURLS SO SHINY TELL ME UR SECRETS
Wow gorgeous!!
Zazzy Bandz thanks friend!
Do you think it matters to get the 25 or 19 momme count?
sundoes shine I believe I have the 19 momme count and I like it.
I love your videos💓🇧🇷
Sorry but the music is annoying and a little bit to loud
Totally understand! If you watch some of my more recent videos you will notice I have stopped adding background music. Please let me know if that is good and helpful!
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney Thank you, i will watch more recent videos. I like your tips. There are not that much videos for wavie hair. Just started my first week. Thought i had straight fizzy hair for years. Still very fizzy and not that much nice curls, it looks like a mess after 1 day. Hope it will get better.
Is there a good alternative to silk for vegans?
Satin would be the alternative.
Bamboo is supposed to give similar results. Try Ettitude.
When I wake up I have bride of Frankenstein hair
What do you mean by "pineapple" 😂
Agh! That fiddle music in the background is terribly distracting.
Yeah, it’s distracting to me too.
Omg I can’t stand satin pillowcases. They slip and slide and feels like it’s not breathable.
Alexa I totally understand! That is the worst! Now if your are interested in MYK Silk, they have a silk pillowcase with a cotton back which helps keep the pillow from sliding around everywhere. What do you think?
