Great video, I find a scarf always slips off during sleep so I'll try it your way. I tend to wash my hair in the evening so when you're having a good hair day, you cringe at the fact it might be ruined by lying on it.
Mel, what do you recommend for shoulder length and shorter hair? Mine is mid-neck length, and no matter how I try to pull it up, it gets flattened, stretched and wonky. I’ve tried scarf, bonnet, half pineapple, Medusa clipping…. Best case scenario is I have to mist my whole head with water bottle, worst case a full re-wet.
This is very informative. Although I wish I could just wake up and not have to think about all these different combos 😭 I guess I should try to just embrace it

Mell we really need some guidance for the pixie cut girlies 😢 I’m growing my hair from a pixie and it’s impossible to even get second day hair because all the curls get squished. Not to mention tying to get definition on 3a/3b
Honestly that's one of the main reasons I don't ever get a pixie cut anymore. I felt like I had to constantly do my hair like everyday or every other day. Also I just didn't want to get a haircut every 4 to 6 weeks.
I was going to offer suggestions til I got to the 3a/b part… my baby fine 2a hair barely waves at pixie length so I’m probably not much help 😂 I would always just rewet it with my fingers, tousle, and go lol. Hairspray was my go-to styler to bring out the waves/curls without weight. At most, when I had a longer top I would sometimes pin curl the top to get more defined curls than my hair normally has…perhaps that could be adapted?
Definitely! Generally any cuts that are shorter than shoulder length, i personally have my curls a little below my chin, and there is no bonnet small enough for them! All the hairstyles i see videos on, are for longer lengths and just don't work on me. We're seriously lacking in shorter curly hair division
@symone4402 I completely understand I have 3a fine hair that is barely chin length and every morning it is squished or just plain crazy. I tried to get a satin lined beanie and it slicked it all down like Gomez Adams 😂 not sure what the solution is
The problem I experienced is that I have no hold! Like I will have spiral curls on the top of my head and then the next day they will be straight (while the curls on the lower part of my head are perfect). And I know the routine is important, I have tried many mousses, gels, foams, and hair spray for more hold. I feel like the hairs on the top of my head are a softer texture and the hairs lower on my head are more coarse.
Is it possibly a protein-moisture issue? Having too much moisture can also make curls that don't last long enough. I've been struggling with protein myself, though I'm a wavy.
So my hair is more straight coming out of the crown. I have luscious spiral curls from mid shaft to ends that do stay. My stylist can give me curls on top and if I clip I'll get some voluminous waviness on top but it doesn't last through sleeping, putting it up and in the bonnet. I've had to learn to be good with my straighter layers looking like a cute Farah Fawcett like style. Trying to get and keep my straighter hair curled isn't worth it. Setting your hair could be a way to make it last a day or so longer but long term I've had to accept and work with what I have.
Mel I have 2C curls but an OILY scalp. Do you have any vids or tips? I have to wash every other day because of the oil and my hair gets so frizzy, except the roots.
Now I have to try all this methods 😁 especially the half pineapple + bonnet one, since now I have slept with a classic pineapple and a silk bonnet, that actually helps me a lot with frizz and tangling, but but my hair always lose all the definition and some times has marks of the scrunchie. Which method do you think works better for wavy, long, high density hair?
Follow-up question: when I’m able to extend my wash day out to 5+ days it’s almost not worth it because my hair is SO tangled by that point that it’s a major effort to detangle. Any advice on how to take care of that on wash day, or during the week as I refresh? Awesome video!!!
When I'm too lazy/too busy to wash, I just douse my hair in water with a spray bottle and brush it out + add some leave in conditioner. My scalp won't be clean, but at least I can last a few more days with freshly detangled hair.
I have wavy/curly hair (oily scalp, dry ends), and legit day 3 or 4 is time for a spray bottle of very watered down conditioner (like a teaspoon of conditioner to a six-ounce bottle), a tangle teezer brush, and some curl talk refreshing foam. Use them in that order, and my hair looks like day 1, maybe with some dry shampoo if it's been hot.
Thanks for this video! By watching your videos and those of people who are inspired by you, I finally found the only thing that suits my hair: the steam machine! My hair does not accept at all that I put water or product during the week... It changed my life ! Thank you
Love your videos! Could you make a video with hair care recommendations for gym babes ? The sweat, the gym bun ruining my wash and go, how often I should wash my hair… please help
I tried the double pineapple and it worked well and I have 2C/3A hair that's down to the middle of my back. The bottom layer is still stretched out a bit but the top layer still has curl and volume on day two and three.
Any tips for a lazy haircare routine? I get burnt out easily and I just want to know the key steps and products to keep my hair healthy. I don't even care much how my hair looks as long as it feels good. I just can't have my arms up for very long, so I need air drying and minimal styling. Any advice is appreciated!
I think if you sit and flip your hair forward itll be easier on your arms while you apply your products. The essentials for styling are leave in conditioner and gel. I hope I was able to help!
I only found you last year so definitely haven't watched all of your videos but I don't recall seeing you brush the gel through your hair before. Many of your techniques are working for me so I'll definitely try it, I just wish I would have seen this before my shower tonight! I've been loving the Verb foaming gel, would you recommend the brush through with that as well?
Can't believe you slept comfortably in those big hoop earrings! I have to take out mine at night - always hurts and I am afraid of yanking them or something at night and tearing my ear lobe. 😯
I love Mel so much and have been following her for years and have bought a couple of the things she’s recommended. But all of the products I feel would help me the most, I just can’t use because I have a coconut allergy. It’s so frustrating to be excited to try a new product and then I read the ingredients and I can’t. I’m so close to just shaving my head at this point. Idk what to do with my curls and I can’t use anything. I still love Mel’s videos and her tips. I’m so happy she has such a good sponsor.
Aveda products are mostly out of my budget. I loved these tips for overnight and refresh care tho. I learned to put my bonnet on from the back to front which I never do. I learned about using a half up style which is great because I get a lot of volume from putting my hair up at night but now that it's over 18" long it is too long and heavy to put completely up. I'm lucky because I can dry brush my hair every couple of days and literally brush each curl around my hand to smooth and refresh them. A loose thick braid is also fine to keep my curls from tangling over night but no volume with that method. As far as steam goes I do the bonnet in the shower but one way the bonnet can give moisture to your hair is just the fact that you sweat a little overnight inside the bonnet. I find that my hair is more moisturized when I use the bonnet over any method that leaves my hair out even with a silk pillowcase. Dryness is what kills my curls and straightens my hair right out.
Why didn’t I realize I can’t do a full pineapple with short hair? 🤦🏾♀️ The half pineapple is definitely the way for me. And you made me realize I need better bonnets mine are too big. They use to fit not quite any more 😂
Hi Mell! Thanks for the video. Your videos have really helped me get better results from my hair routines. I would love to see you demo a brush out on wavy/looser curls. I have tried brushing out my curls on the second or 3rd day but my hair just tends to get frizzy and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I've tried several bonnets to no avail. They're either too loose and fall off during the night. I'm a wild sleeper Or they're too tight and I can't sleep. Any suggestions? BTW... Mel, you have a nice singing voice ❤️
I’m a “very active” side sleeper and have found scarves work better for me than bonnets. I have to get the bigger ones and tried a few different ways of tying them before I found one that (mostly) stays put. I watched a bunch of vintage hair videos for ideas on how to tie it. A few strategically placed large bobby pins can help too - the little ones didn’t have enough grip.
Also don’t discount a basic ultra fine mist spray bottle full of water. I put distilled in mine because our water is really hard. Also distilled water avoids mildew for longer. Way easier to travel with a small spray bottle than a steamer. Also easy to keep in your desk/car/locker if you get to lunchtime and realize your hair is having a melt down. I also like to keep a spray gel on hand. I rarely use spray gel as part of a wash day but it is great for those times when ALL of it could use a little additional hold. I’ll mist/steam it, then while it is still ever so slightly damp spritz it with some spray gel and then gently scrunch everything together. Works great on those days when it doesn’t feel dry so much as just flat. Serums/oils for me are great for dry hair days but will worsen hair that is wanting to fall flat.
Love you, Sisters 💰 so much! Y’all have got me through the past four years with my curly hair. I love the empty videos! I was curious to know which products help y’all the most on Amanda‘s bachelorette trip. And if there are any dupes for the Aveda line, texture spray, & ghost oil
Question for you, my dearest Mell: How should I protect my hair while exercising? My 2C hair falls a few inches below my shoulders. I normally throw it into a bun with an Invisibobble, but you say here that a bun is no bueno….and I do feel like it stretches my curls out. Happy Thursday, y’all! ❤
I just put a regular pony tail in and just use thick hair bobbie pins. They are larger and have a bit of a gap and they don’t ruin your curls. I picked these up at Walmart
I have 2C hair too and I use a folded over pony on top of my head with a scrunchie and then use small claw clips to clip the ends up against the top knot which also holds the top knot in place because the scrunchie isn’t super tight. It recovers fairly well after this with minimal refreshing depending on the workout.
I have a question for you in regards to dealing with overnight hair protection when you also have to wear a cpap? I have the full head gear so i've got 2 bands, one at the back and one at the crown, that have to be fairly tight. I'm 50 and am just now learning how to properly care for my curly hair.. (type 3 a/b, fine, medium density, not 100% on the porisity, but i _think_ high??) and have also recently moved from Alaska to Georgia.. so will be dealing with humidity again soon for the first time in over 20 years.. I have spent most of my life just brushing my curls out most of the time.. but am now in process of learning how to better deal with it all.. I also tend to wash my hair at night and set with either pins or twist curlers to dry over night.. (haven't owned a hair dryer in years.. though am learning that I might want to change that...) HELP! :)
Hey Mell! How do I bring back the ‘bounce’ or shrinkage that I had with my natural hair, that is now loosening and elongating since getting highlights and being damaged?
this happened to me last year when i did highlights and the hairstylist used strong products for my hair; i have been using bonding systems like olaplex, k18 and twist (orange bonding mask) and chi silk infusion reconstructing. Olaplex and k18 (different goals but still make my hair healthier) helped improve the appearance and feel of my hair after washing. The twist mask is very moisturizing which softens my strands. I also really like the eva nyc therapy session hair mask for softness but it doesnt have bonding characteristics from what i know. Chi silk infusion really really makes my hair feel like the strands are "sealed" if that makes sense and always makes my hair bouncier, even if i dont use one of the previous mentioned products. I would say moisturize and hydrate your hair a lot and always finish with a hair serum or oil. I hope this helps:)
I appreciate you SO much! Your videos have helped/taught me so much. You have saved me so much time and energy every day, and as someone with ME/CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) that means so much more than you'll ever know. Thank you!❤ I started using a satin scarf at night (and in the shower the next day cuz the shower caps I bought were much too small and I can't imagine them not causing squishage) after I first found (and binged) your vids a few years ago, and it worked great! Before, I thought wash day was a joke and only an excuse to get out of seeing a guy!😂 I had no idea that my curls could survive more than a day and was redoing my hair every day (just conditioner in the shower and then more mousse😖 and 15-20 mins of finger coiling)!😓😮💨 But lately (I think because I started using a feather pillow that is fluffier), I always end up with a huge flat, parted section in the back😭 I was afraid to try the bonnet because I thought I would end up squishing the curls in the back or that the scrunchie would deform my curls (if it would even hold my thin/fine hair) but I may try it now. I will definitely be trying some of these other tips too and hopefully I can save my next day curls instead of just putting it up in a pony. Thanks again❤❤❤ (Love the website too! The way you've laid out all the info for each product is amazing. Makes it so much easier to find the best ones for my hair type! Hope to see that for more products and tools in the future!)
ive always wondered about layering - like if you applied an oil on morning 3 after the steam refresh then how will the overnight product penetrate the hair on night 4?
I don’t have crazy curls like you. So with my 2C wavy locks, should I still be combing the gel through my hair in sections the way you do? Thank you - you’re videos are amazing!!
I have 2c 3a and I comb either the mousse or gel into sections. However, I noticed when I comb the mousse through my wavs/curls look way better. If I comb the gel through not so much. Try it and see if it works for you
I have very dense but thin hair. It’s a little about my shoulder, kinda coiled but not really sure. My hair gets tangled after night 2. I can’t fit it into a bonnet either after day 1 and my hair barley lasts 3 days. I going to buy the foaming gel you use, a satin scrunchie and possibly a bigger bonnet. The refresher is too expensive for me. Can you please recommend anything else?
Me! Anyways I need to clarify I had my hair done to be straight for only lasting 6 years (2016-2022) even though in 2022 I started to teach myself how to straighten my hair for months before a year later I moved on to start to sort of taking care of my natural curly hair even though I use the octopus heatless curlers
Did you get these results with curl gelée only or did you apply a curl cream before brushing in the gel? I tried with gel only after watching this and my curls are less plump.
Woooow that was an incredible good washday :o i need that kind of day😄 and so happy about the alternatives that I can try out🥳 1 question, why does it happen when scrunching the curls gets wonky? It is super weird
I definitely need a satin scarf cause my pillowcase is full of oil from all the moisture i need to apply in a week😂 but still i cant understand how my hair on day 4 and till 7 are betterrrrr than day 1 or 2 . Please tell me what to do to not moisturize them so much but have enough slip so i can style them . 3a 3b pattern medium length❤

I have type 2c hair and I struggle with keeping my hair cover at night I have a lot of hip and back pain so I move a lot I usually end up having to wet my hair completely and re style in the morning any tips for us!? When I try wrappers or bonnets they end up across the room some time in the night even when I clip them
Question: I sleep on a silk pillow case, but lately I have found that my hair sometimes gets caught under my shoulders when sleeping , if I lift my head and not my upper body it is almost like I glued the ends of my hair to my back, but the moment I change the position I sit up in my hair is no longer stuck , any tips to fix this problem? I don’t need to cut my hair because I like the length and my hair is super healthy because I take really good care of it.
I don’t get how ppl say the bonnet is uncomfortable, I know everyone is different.. for me my bonnet makes or breaks how well I sleep. If I forget my bonnet while traveling i quite literally do not sleep well. My hair is always in the way, my husband lays on it which snatches the soul out of my freakin scalp, it makes me back itch😂 and lord knows if I get too hot it’s making me sweat like crazy
It gets uncomfortable for those with sensitive scalps and heads. They can cause headaches fairly easily for a lot of people (myself included) … leading to how and why it’s uncomfortable as one wakes up with a headache that takes hours to go away from even the tiniest bit of pressure along the temples and forehead for an extended period of time. We can wear a bonnet for maybe 30mins to maybe an hour or 2 without too much discomfort, but anymore than that is asking for a rough start to the day. Brings about one of those “I just don’t care how it looks, I don’t care if it’s frizzy and flat….just give me some coffee/tea and some ibuprofen already and leave me alone” types of mornings. Those who can wear them every night, count your blessings lol.
@@TwoBs I know this is an old comment but I wonder if your bonnet is the kind with an elasticated band? The ones I use have adjustable bands and that is probably why I find them comfortable compared to the pressure of elasticated bands which can be bit too much.

Mel, were can l find your big scrunches that you use when you work out❤❤❤?
I have dandruff, is using leave in conditioner good for my hair? My hair is really damaged, I got a perm 4 month ago Hair is dry . Love your show
I tried the double pineapple and it worked well and I have 2C/3A hair that's down to the middle of my back. The bottom layer is still stretched out a bit but the top layer still has curl and volume on day two and three.
That bonnet looks awesome. Where did you get it from?
I bought a bonnet that is supposedly for short hair, but it is not voluminous enough that there is still space in it. Any tips?
The half pineapple is definitely the way for me. And you made me realize I need better bonnets mine are too big. They use to fit not quite any more 😂
MELL: What about for short (pixie or bob) curlies?
What is a good budget version of the leave in? Maybe one from Curlsmith😊
What’s the link to both shirts in this video!? Need them so bad for a trip 😮
I've just discovered your channel and find the information very valuable. The only issue is the Aveda products are too expensive.
Hi Mell! Thanks for the video. Your videos have really helped me get better results from my hair routines. I would love to see you demo a brush out on wavy/looser curls. I have tried brushing out my curls on the second or 3rd day but my hair just tends to get frizzy and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
You should try adding a little bit of oil to your hair while brushing OR brush, oil, brush gives me loose waves while not being greasy
@@SweetIvoryLilly thank you, i’ll give this a try
Have you ever styled a curly beard? Any tips on them when they’re really dry. My fiancé struggled with his all the time.
@@bellydancefae Thanks for the tip ! 😊
Have you tried one with an adjustable elastic strap? Mine does sometimes slip off, but usually it stays put.
@@imaginefun13 I have. The only ones that work I have to adjust so tight I can't sleep 😞
Mell! What about when I work out and my scalp gets all sweaty but I don’t want to over-wash my hair? Should I just bite the bullet and wash it?
Use a buff!
I just put a regular pony tail in and just use thick hair bobbie pins. They are larger and have a bit of a gap and they don’t ruin your curls. I picked these up at Walmart
@@BionAvastar3000 Thanks! Those look awesome for sleep, but I don't think I could use it for workouts...my head would be sweaty as a b*tch! 🤣
@@Daniela-2208 Ooooh, great idea, thanks!! 😃
How about when hair begins to get very oily and wash day is nearing? Does that change the routine a bit or do these tips and tricks still apply?
Thank you!❤
I started using a satin scarf at night (and in the shower the next day cuz the shower caps I bought were much too small and I can't imagine them not causing squishage) after I first found (and binged) your vids a few years ago, and it worked great! Before, I thought wash day was a joke and only an excuse to get out of seeing a guy!😂 I had no idea that my curls could survive more than a day and was redoing my hair every day (just conditioner in the shower and then more mousse😖 and 15-20 mins of finger coiling)!😓😮💨
But lately (I think because I started using a feather pillow that is fluffier), I always end up with a huge flat, parted section in the back😭
I was afraid to try the bonnet because I thought I would end up squishing the curls in the back or that the scrunchie would deform my curls (if it would even hold my thin/fine hair) but I may try it now. I will definitely be trying some of these other tips too and hopefully I can save my next day curls instead of just putting it up in a pony.
Thanks again❤❤❤
(Love the website too!
Try it and see if it works for you
Any tips for keeping the bonnet on your head at night?
A fabric strip, or you can buy a bonnet that already has one (I have one of them and it stays on all night long)
Mel, could you post a link of the cap you use? I've tried satin caps and they always leave my hair flat
What methods do you use for sleeping with longer curly hair? My hair i feel like is wayyy too long for a bonnet or scarf
Thank you! I’m going to try the first bonnet tip because my back side always gets crushed when it’s in a bonnet.
Id love the link to your bonnet!
Who started taking care of the curls after six years of straightening them?
Me! Anyways I need to clarify I had my hair done to be straight for only lasting 6 years (2016-2022) even though in 2022 I started to teach myself how to straighten my hair for months before a year later I moved on to start to sort of taking care of my natural curly hair even though I use the octopus heatless curlers
I did after 20 years of straightening!
I stopped straightening my hair 9 years ago. I have woke up to “already refreshed hair” maybe twice. 😂
What was the brand of the night cap you were using?
I know someone probably died in it... 😂😂😂 you are hilarious!
thank you so much for this video ❤️❤️
Should I use these tips if I have wavy hair? I have issues with frizz
I often get sweaty at night and a satin scarf or pillowcase makes me way too warm. Any tips?
Also with the banding technique, do you also wrap it?
Did you get these results with curl gelée only or did you apply a curl cream before brushing in the gel? I tried with gel only after watching this and my curls are less plump.
Woooow that was an incredible good washday :o i need that kind of day😄 and so happy about the alternatives that I can try out🥳 1 question, why does it happen when scrunching the curls gets wonky? It is super weird
For the wash and go girlies with tight coils, using a buff works way better than a bonnet. Just take it off in the morning, shake and go!
What is a buff exactly ?
@@dontmindme4688 Google> hair + Buff
I definitely need a satin scarf cause my pillowcase is full of oil from all the moisture i need to apply in a week😂 but still i cant understand how my hair on day 4 and till 7 are betterrrrr than day 1 or 2 . Please tell me what to do to not moisturize them so much but have enough slip so i can style them . 3a 3b pattern medium length❤
Or you can just get better pillowcases and change them every 2 days. Whatever works for you though 😇.
@jclyntoledo Thank you a lot !!! I have already paid 200 for 2 silk pillowcases so I prefer the new scarf for wearing outside also . 😅 but sure If I had one more set I would do that !!! If you have any suggestions for europe shop pillowcases please send me, thank you !!! 😊
I have type 2c hair and I struggle with keeping my hair cover at night I have a lot of hip and back pain so I move a lot I usually end up having to wet my hair completely and re style in the morning any tips for us!?
When I try wrappers or bonnets they end up across the room some time in the night even when I clip them
Any suggestion for curlies who wear CPAP masks?
Question: I sleep on a silk pillow case, but lately I have found that my hair sometimes gets caught under my shoulders when sleeping , if I lift my head and not my upper body it is almost like I glued the ends of my hair to my back, but the moment I change the position I sit up in my hair is no longer stuck , any tips to fix this problem? I don’t need to cut my hair because I like the length and my hair is super healthy because I take really good care of it.
Do you have any cheaper over night serum recommendations🥲🫶🏼
You excellent ❤
Lol I was looking for a video like this earlier today and the algorithm heard my cries 😅
Wow, I can't go more than 3 days usually! nice!
Any packages or discount codes for Aveeda?
I end up with horrible pain in my neck and the back of my head with all of these methods...
@@TwoBs I know this is an old comment but I wonder if your bonnet is the kind with an elasticated band? The ones I use have adjustable bands and that is probably why I find them comfortable compared to the pressure of elasticated bands which can be bit too much.
HI MELL❤️❤️❤️
Your out here living your best life and we love to see it.
Please could you review the garnier ultimate blends shampoo and conditioner. I personally LOVEEEE the honey treasures one. It leaves my hair the softest and most delicious smelling too haha. But there are many videos saying that you should stay away from shampoos like that and so I thought maybe it’s too good to be true. I would love to hear your expertise and what you think of the shampoo after trying it yourself.
Lots of love❤❤❤❤
What do you recommend doing to protect the curls overnight if you can’t wear a bonnet because it hurts
Find a bonnet that fits. It shouldn't hurt!
How long does the initial styling session usually take?
Anyone know what the smaller pink bonnet Mell uses is? I’m sure it’s on Amazon but I don’t know which one it is!
I tried the Aveda Gelee and sadly it caused my hair to "seize up"and didn't work for me! 😭 Onto the next one. Loved this video though!
How do you take your shower?l mean isn't supposed to put conditioner(not leave in conditioner just conditioner)on curly hair 4-5 times a week. I'm really confused right now
Is that regular brush u used?
Your Cute your educational. Thank you.😅
I discovered TGIN buttercream from Target. My curly hair air dries. No fuss, lasts for days.
does natural humidity work? (I live in Florida 💀)
