The triangle shaped piece stuck to the bottom of the tank was probably a buffer between the tank and skid plate, would prevent tank from rubbing, and vibration tapping due to such close tolerance between the tank and skid plate... Definitely re-apply. Best replacement would be the adhesive backed sound deadening mat used in interiors

@@jspaulding4106 You wont need a static conducting matt/strap on this because it uses an internal static dissipating conductor inside the fuel tank.

Loving this series Alex! I've worked on a LOT of CIS injection back in the day when it was pretty popular on VW Rabbits, Jettas, Volvos, etc. and it actually was a pretty bullet-proof system, as long as you didn't let them sit around too long. Fuel pumps seemed to be the main failure point, since they were relatively high pressure, and aftermarket pumps NEVER worked as well as the original Bosch units, even though the originals were 3 times the price.😝 Reman injectors were pretty cheap, and would often fix multiple problems just by replacing them. No one, except the dealers, had access to any kind of injector cleaners, so we were stuck with just trying to clean them with compressed air, if anything.
The old V6 sounded pretty good after it ran for a bit and got all the cobwebs out. I think once you get the plug drilled out for the mixture compensation screw, and you can fine tune it, it will be golden! If you have a simple CO meter to stick in the exhaust, and just keep it a little on the rich side of the recommended CO settings, it will run well and have plenty of power. If the cat is clogged, you can get universal replacement converters on Ebay for 50-70 bucks. Looking forward to the next installment!😉

This is such a fun series. You asked about ethanol in ND during 1981-1991. Definitely possible. I grew up in DeKalb, IL in the 1980's, and it was already available. I remember putting "gasahol" as it was called in my 1987 Ford Mustang. Being the Midwest and farm country, the Farm Bureau was pushing its usage, and I definitely could imagine an agriculture heavy state like ND having it available from the mid 1980's onward.

    • @stevesether
      @stevesether 10 місяців тому +1

I'd agree. I live in MN, and there were definitely stations that had ethanol fuel starting sometime in the mid 80s or so. I remember my father complaining about it.
So given ND also produces a lot of corn, it wouldn't surprise me if they also had stations that sold fuel with ethanol in it. So there's no guarantees.

A little tip about crush washers everywhere on your car.... After torquing the bolt down that has a crush washer(s), hit the head of the bolt once with a hammer (brass if ignition is a concern) and re-torque . This sets the crush washer to sit absolutely flush for a leakproof seal. Do this especially on your brake line to caliper banjo bolts.

      @@marknelson8724
Minor problem, Mark, just build a beefy CNC Router (cheaper than buying) and use it to carve out a master pattern of the hammer's head...and a few graphite crucibles. Then build yourself a drain-oil-heated melting furnace using a junk oil furnace blower/burner and a cut off propane tank lined with refractory cement mixed with long-fiber fiberglass matt. (note: flywheel from a '38 Dodge pickup is perfect for the lid) Use the CNC Router to finish the appropriate areas of the cast hammer head and create a custom Mountain Ash handle. Now test-fit the handle just to be sure. Next, lay the head on a folded towel, on your most rugged bench or table, and beat the stuffin's out of it with a good, 24-ounce nailing hammer and the ball end of a much smaller ball-peen hammer to give it character. Then de-burr by lightly filing with the required shapes of very fine files and give it a good going-over with a palm sander and 320 grit, moving to 600 grit. Finally, apply a compound to achieve a patina of your choice and buff it out so the high spots are less affected, implying age and heavy use...apply diesel drain oil to the handle, quickly wiping it off the handgrip area...wire-brush the handgrip area...apply a honey-colored log cabin finish...sand the whole handle to cut the gloss...insert and seat the handle to the head...smack home the wedges trim the excess handle, dip the whole thing in drain oil, drop it in your half-full shop vac's can...wipe it off while deeply distracted by the neighbor lady prancing around her back yard in a scandalously-cut maillot swimsuit.
      And, you're done!
I'm only as far as building the Router, but I have hope! (7 videos on my channel)

As far as the car "only having 16,000 miles" I agree with you. Based on the condition of the underside. The oil build up. The torn CV boot and so on. There is NO WAY that car only has 16,000 miles on it. I think it is safe to say it's very likely at least 116,000 miles or more. As an example. We just got a 1990 International 4700 diesel in. It only has 45,000 original miles. The dead give away was not only car fax, one owner. The motor it self is still shiny and blue. No oil build up. Sorry, I don't mean to ramble. I was simply sharing. Again, I do enjoy your videos. Ron

Before messing with the mixture adjustment screw on the CIS distributor, make sure the following is checked and fixed first:
-Find and fix all vacuum leaks, since K-Jet can't compensate for them well. Metering plate not moving down enough is a classic sign of this.
-Make sure the oxygen sensor system is working and entering closed loop. There should be a 2-pin plug dangling somewhere in the engine compartment. This is where you plug in a duty cycle meter and check that it is hovering in the correct range. Shop manual will have all the details. K-Jetronic was 100% mechanical, except on US cars where an O2 sensor and "frequency valve" was bolted on for emissions.

Fellow DeLorean owner (VIN 04228) and huge fan of your channel! Solid work on this rebuild and restoration! One suggestion regarding the fuel system. My DeLorean only has 14K miles and also was garage kept for 27 years and required a complete fuel system rebuild front to back. I have been to a great deal of DeLorean car shows and was told those CIS systems operate much better on non ethanol fuel so I found several gas stations that carry it. Just a suggestion since that Bosch CIS distributor has such tight tolerances and can be a headache. Keep up the good work! Very excited for this new project You have going.

Hey Alex, just talking to my friend who has a Delorean, he said replace the injector lines asap with braided lines, the original are prone to split and as you could imagine spray fuel everywhere.
Everyone needs to pause for a minute in respect for the 6 Deloreans that meet their end in Australia today, a truck rolled down a hill through a workshop destroying everything in there.

Your fuel distributor was probably okay. If the other injectors were getting fuel, that one should have it too. There are small screens down in the holes where the lines attach and one was plugged. There is a metal diaphram in the fuel distributor that covers the holes going to the injectors. When you press down on that air flapper, it allows more fuel pressure to be on the top side of that diaphram pushing the plate down and allowing more fuel to flow out to the injectors. It is a pretty simple system.

Those engines were used in Alpine a310, either N/A or turbo, up to 200hp iirc. Or even 250 to 280 in the a610.
They might be hard to find in America though.
These engines went to more than 400 in Venturis, with special heads (I think Lotus had a hand in it), but these are rare and most likely very pricey.

The only thing I that looks a bit sketchy (at least from the video is you should be careful of the heat shield around the muffler. Looks like it could be asbestos from back in the day. Looking good! You have the Midwest guys who are brilliant, but I'm just going to share my $0.02 bit of advice. PLEASE replace the fuel lines!
You should still drop the gas tank for two reasons. 1. easier to clean the tank, 2. easier to remove the coolant lines which you need to do. You can check to see if there's any rust damage from the brake booster which likely leaked (common failure) and you'll know it when if the inside of the metal tank cover is rusted. When you had it in the air I think I could see where it was rusted. You can look behind the drive-side front tire between the frame and the gas tank cover.
The DeLorean fuel PSI is incredibly high, much higher than regular cars because of the mechanical fuel injection. So I suspect the additional check valve is needed for that high pressure.
I'd recommend you most definitely replace the fuel accumulator which is located in the center of the frames spine dead center of the car.
Don't drill out the hole for the fuel adjustment, they sealed that up for a reason.

I have not finished this video series yet, but wanted to make a comment on the frame channel intersections with rust compromising strength. I wanted to suggest another option to explore, which could be very economical compared to a frame off repair. I believe that you should consider using precision blocking made of an aluminum alloy material. If you could have precision blocks made to dimension that could be inserted into those intersections. they could be tapped and then holes could be drilled into the channels to secure them to be one extremely strong joint. You could employ shims if necessary to create the rigidity that would be required for a strong structural joint. This proposed idea would be stronger than the factory hollow welded joint at the assembly line. This would possibly withstand a junk yard crush machine. During assembly, a butyl or some other sealant material could cover the internal surfaces first. That will also prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. Then after bolting in and curing, a never harden rust preventive coating could be applied to the outside to further seal the joint from oxidation. After that, an annual inspection on al intersections which may prompt another quick coating of rust preventive coating. A mechanical engineer would be the one to consult. Not all automotive technicians would be able to grasp this concept and strength potential. Thank you for this amazing video series.

One of the best shows on YT, thanks Alex. You reminded me: back years ago (2002 or so) I got a 1984 Porsche 944, had a frickin blast with it for 32 miles, but then it jumped time and smoked the engine. Got a few mechanic opinions and it was far outside my price range to fix. Not even a week after I found that out my mechanic out in the country called me and said there was an identical Porsche 944 in his buddys garage right down the road. I ended up buying it for $1500 as it had been setting for 13 years. Towed it to his shop (good friend/mechanic) and proceeded to give it an oil change, drain the fuel, clean the intake tubes and airfilter system (good thing as it had a mouse nest) refilled with 5 gallons of recreational fuel with 3 bottles of Cyclo fuel injection cleaner, new battery and sanded terminals: Fired up on the 3rd turn and ran like a top for the next 70,000 miles. I was so frickin happy like you were with the Delorean-instant reminder of this story as the 1984 Porsche 944 na, and the 1983 Mazda RX7 were my 2 favorite sportscars ive owned (the only ones, but I've driven many) Thanks again for great videos
