This got me interested in the Panamera in general. Looks like someone took all the normal German engineering cues, but forgot to make everything hard to get to and bizarrely placed.
Well replacing intake filter requires removing front bumper, also Panamera has the most electronic systems within porsche family, and some porsche indie shop straight refuse to repair them. There is a reason why 4-door porsche depreciates so much, whereas some 911 appreciates post pendenmic as well. Luckily all engine updates were all done , plus I found receipts for all new brakes , new belts , rad , waterpump , etc. Hit the jackpot with this one , only 2 previous owners. Very happy with the car. Great video Sam! Great channel! 👍
@@philtucker1224 Likely because that’s what they’re going for at auction. That model year+mileage is around 13k-14k US at a dealership also, meaning that he lucked out on it being so well maintained, not that the price is anything special.
Hi Sam. Big fan. My fav is the Benz R500 wagon. Great deal. I have been watching for a few years, while waiting to buy my first car, in Seattle (I'm from NYC, L.A., and Providence}. I've worked on cars since I was 16, and computers the rest of the time. Your analysis is what I enjoy most, and I just purchased my first TopScan, based on your wonderful rundown of it's features (no liability on your part). I am sure I will have a good experience. Thanks for the knowledge, friend. I appreciate it. FYI, my best friend from third grade in L.A. got a '72 Mustang Fastback in ~1994, on which we did a restomod with his dad. We took the engine out, sent it to the paint shop, put the engine back in and drove around for a few months before we both had to retreat to the Northeast. It's nice work if you can get it. I am suscribed. Thanks again.
You gotta hand it to Samcrac, he knows how to make an entertaining video. I'm not even interested in Porsche cars or maintenance but I'm hooked from the get go.
He never asked the dealership to address the check engine light though, he just brought it in for the recall which they did fix. If he agreed to proceed with the work they quoted they know it wouldn't fix the car but he'd be liable for the work since he agreed to it, then they would quote the repair for the engine as something crazy high (he said 30 labor hrs workshop time for timing job in the video!!) and offer him a 'great trade in deal' towards one of their cars.
Wouldn't it be reasonable to have mechanic and service manager expose them to the error of there bad diagnostic and repair suggestions especially at $300 hr.
That price for plugs is absolutely beyond belief. The dealership should be thoroughly ashamed at just the level of greed at play here. I really hope the absurd pricing starts to push consumers who own these vehicles to look a bit beyond the dealership and seek out independent specialists instead. Great to see you get a 'win' as well Sam after a lot of issues with lemons!
It’s normal. If you don’t get a coupon or deal, oil changes for Porsches are a consistent $700-800. Plugs are 3 years or 30k miles. The best part, these prices are consistent whether it’s my 911 or my wife’s Macan. I skip the plugs, that’s a cash grab, but the oil changes are labor intensive and there’s little things they do that goes beyond just oil - like cleaning out water drain holes, etc.
@@markdauncey927 I would be highly surprised though might account for the ludicrous price..? Reading around though, this is just what Porsche charge for plugs. I would imagine coils on top of that would be at least $3000-$4000 more.

Crazy how efficient your videos are. I see all harbor freight tools to work on a 90k car lol. Also, so cool to see how you buy these expensive cars for pennies on the dollar and you have tons of room to work on them. Thats one thing I like about Florida and Texas, it seems so awesome to have lots of property to play with.
You don't need to mess with timing replacing those adjuster bolts on the back. Since there's four the back case stays in place and you just replace one at a time. Those little bolts are NOT a lot of torque, only like 8nm and a 180 angle. However, if the bolts are loose or broken then the adjust itself should be replaced at which point timing would be dealt with.
You were so right to expose those dealer tactics, that’s how they make their mega profits (and probably why a 130k car is only worth 10k now.) in the U.K. we call them “rogue traders”…

My Mazda dealer I’ve been with since 2015 takes great care of my car for a very reasonable price. My GMC dealer I’ve been with since getting my 2500 in 2021 charges >$250/hr, always tries to upsell me on some bs, and has more than once failed to fully address the issue I took the truck into them for. From what I’ve seen my Mazda dealer is a rare exception to the norm. Appreciate them a lot more since I’ve seen what other places are like.
Interesting - I have a similar experience with my Mazda dealer: great service. I wonder if that’s just luck? I don’t have a lot of other recent dealership experience to be able to compare, but many of the comments I see aren’t very positive.
as the consumer, you have to ask questions and have an idea of what/why you are bringing the car in for. Our Mazda (and Subaru) dealer always want $60 ($30 for filter + $30 for labor) to replace the cabin air filter. They always show me an extremely dirty filter packed w/leaves from trees we don't have AND the cars are garage kept. It takes 5 minutes to replace the filter on each car pulling the glove box door out. Filters are $14 from other places. Being somewhat knowledgeable can save you money.
That dealership was reaching for the moon on that quote, that's y they are called stealerships by us mechanics. One tip though on timing those, Make sure u bolt the cam locks down to the head for absolute perfect timing. These modern engines are so sensitive that even a degree off can cause issues or SES light, I have done the same thing before many times and it was fine but i found that bolting them down it would move a tiny bit more from where i had them set. Been a long time subscriber since the pizza car days and figured i would just offer a tip on timing, been a mechanic all my life and specialize in European. I work on pretty much everything but euro is where its at, There are also adaptations in the computer that should be reset for the variable cam timing along with a couple other things. You have come a long way since the early days man and when u freshly do a timing chain or have fuel system apart it will take a bit for fuel to get through HPFP and DI injectors. Even when u double check everything there is always a chance to miss something.
Great video Sam. I’ve had 2 Panamera turbos (970) and this same issue happens at around 145k miles. Dealer quoted me $23k to fix…. I ended up swapping the motor (and a bunch of other things) for less then half, because I didn’t know what the actual issue was.
That top engine mount is an anti torque mount. It is only in tension when you accelerate or deaccelerate with the engine. The other three are just to hold the engine up in place (the transmission mount is the 3rd).
Kudos Sam,,, these videos are the reason that I follow you,,, other than the Copart walk through (with sold price reveals, of course). Proud of ya for the diagnostic & repair. Inspiring....
How many owners have paid for the repairs, then had the engine go because they didn't fix the real problem. Or maybe the strategy is to get you to pay for the useless repairs, to make up for the labor cost on the recall repair they finally tell you about when you agree to the other stuff. It might have been interesting to see if other dealers missed the recall too.
An excellent example of why you shouldn't rely on a dealer's diagnosis. Don't forget, Main Dealers are just shade tree mechanics who have paid money to the manufacturer... Top quality, Sam 🙂👍

@@ramiromorales5006 Sounds like you've already experienced the joys of Porsche ownership? Awesome, if you feel like doing it, can you tell me about how much to fix all that broke? What actually broke, and why you'd own (or not own) another?
Only thing is... can this guy make money on a car with 180k miles? Sure he gets them real cheap, and fixes them himself. But then you're still selling a Porsche with 180k miles on it. Maybe he just makes like $5k - $8k? Not bad but a big risk sometimes. You'd need to get every car for $1,500 max for it to be worth all these gambles.

Might be one of the dumbest decisions I've seen on youtube. Granted, the kit from FCP is $1277 but when you're talking about a $20k+ car, cheaping out on critical engine components is silly.
Yeah because the original parts literally fell apart into the engine, Porsche was the ones who decided to cheap out on critical parts, making it out of inferior plastics
@@jasras5003 oh shit I didn't read the original poster saying his car was only six years old. That sucks I wonder if it had a ctv. Toyota has had problems with those although their ectvs are amazing. My Camry trans went out at like 280000 miles which is already a crazy amount of miles.
I love your channel! Very informative and "real"!!! Keep'in it real with costs and how dealers want to take advantage of the "uninformed" customer... Keep up the great work!
Put a complaint with Corperate about the technician and the dealership for their practices. For the tech not to see that the plastic guides were damaged is absolutely appalling. The service guy probably just looked at the bolts and that was it. Then the up-sale shit. Didn't care if it was running bad or not.
If you go that route PCNA will respond with “all our dealerships are independently owned and operated.” They are telling you to go elsewhere. Porsche dealers legally collude to service new car buyers in specific areas (by where you live)but you can get any Porsche dealer to provide service to your vehicle or buy a used car.
That tech got done with that job as fast as he possibly could, then tried to sell some stuff real quick that may or may not have been necessary in an attempt to actually make some money. I promise you he lost his ass doing just a recall, because recalls and warranty work don’t pay worth a shit. It’s a lousy industry to work in and you gotta do what you gotta do to get paid.
The Tech did his Job.. Sam talked to the service advisor for a recall..so the tech did the recall per what the car came in for.. As a tech ur supposed to spot quick issues which tech did. The tech did not get paid for doing a check engine light diagnosis as Sam didn’t pay a diagnostic fee. He got paid for a recall
Very cool project and I like your pragmatic mentality. I do a lot of mechanic work on Vintage and Classic Chevy Trucks & one of the things I learned really fast was purchasing OEM products gave the most longevity and most importantly to me, eliminated all unknown variables, when the issue can’t be 100% pinpointed (i.e. isolated the actual symptom but not the cause) I do agree that OEM parts are almost always unreasonabley more expensive but they come with a level of engineering and testing backed by a multi-billion dollar company so 95%+ of the time you can be certain it will perform as intended w/o conflicting with other parts or its surroundings. So while a cheap $240 timing set looks appealing … It’s a MAJOR CRITICAL COMPONENT at the heart of the engine and it failing prematurely will lead to the engine detonating beyond the means of reasonable repair. So since you got the engine opened up WHY WOULD YOU INSTALL some cheap Chinese knockoff? The original lasted damn near 150k/160k and definitely should have been changed around 90,000-100,000mi as part of good engine preventative maintenance. If Porsche said they would sell the part for 10x what you paid for it I would still bend over and take it because then I would be confident in the vehicles not needing a new one until another 100k+ miles.
I lost confidence in dealers years ago. The last great dealer I knew was Vista Lexus in Woodland Hills calif. it was family owned with a fabulous service team . They ultimately sold to a Chinese buyer who treated the staff like crap, many of whom left. Almost all dealers are just parts replacers and really don’t want to work on complex problems. After much research I found a great independent mechanic. Mercifully he’s young and will be around.
Same where I live, in Bradford, England. We have Britain's youngest population, with ⅓ of our population being under 25 years of age, and as you can imagine there are a lot of motor mechanics here. I didn't realise how much of a blessing that is until I had an engine malfunction in the other end of the country and the youngest mechanic we found was about 50
$2400 to replace the spark plugs? I know things are way up in price these days but that is a ballsy insult. They couldn't even diagnose the real problem. Unbelievable. Other Porsche owners will be very interested in this video. Well done Sam.
They definitely tried to gouge him but a few things to keep in mind. 1. He did NOT pay them to diagnose ANYTHING. He took it in to have a recall done. All the stuff they recommended was just whatever bullshit they could come up with that it might possibly actually need considering it was running bad. No diagnosis was ever done on anything. 2. There are definitely cars I would charge 2400 to do a spark plug change. Not because it costs that much but because it's such a pain in the ass, I do not want to do it. Let them take it to some other sucker who kills himself over 100 bucks. If they are dumb enough to pay it, cool. Payday for me. No this is not one of those cars, this job is easy but I can see why it could be that high sometimes.
Driving nice cars comes at a great cost that most of us on the planet could never justify. It would be one thing if the cost was mostly the original purchase price. But in actuality it's the cost in the long run from maintenance. We'd all be bankrupt with a $10k repair. One thing goes wrong and we're broke.
These videos are so satisfying to watch :) The out of Gas made me chuckle and got excited when it started. Good for you guys for proving if you have the knowledge and skill you can save a beautiful car at a REAL cost. I wish I could drive a beautiful car like this.

No they’re trained. Trained to get as much money from you as possible. I used to deliver to these types of dealerships and you can overhear all kinds of overcharging being done in service. No integrity.
I used to work for a Freightliner dealership. We were never encouraged to up sale to customers beyond actual issues their vehicles had. It was almost like the Army when I was a mechanic there. If it was worn of failing report it and repair/replace. But in this case it was always in the customers hands what happened. Recalls were always under warranty.
Great video Sam. Actually the motor mounts on the Porsche are liquid filled. They can look fine and not move much, but once the liquid leaks out you will get more vibration in the cab. Have a visual inspection to make sure the liquid didn’t leak out.
Really encouraging to see how serviceable is the engine of a Porsche Panamera. Reliability seems pretty decent too, as long as you keep up with maintenance.
You guys really know what you are doing. Fun to watch you screw the dealership. You should go back to them and tell them what they missed and how they tried to SCREW you. Just a suggestion.

Great video! I had a cayenne GTS with a drain plug that was even worse. They strip pretty easily. I was actually able to get it out with using a hammer and a flat blade screw driver and hitting it on an angle. The drain plug is aluminum so it makes impressions easily.
Aftermarket is one thing and doesn't necessarily mean bad. Amazon timing kit with no brand... Yeah. That's a different story. I would never buy something like this. The chain will probably be quite weak, the guides... They may wear just that much faster or snap to pieces.

This got me interested in the Panamera in general. Looks like someone took all the normal German engineering cues, but forgot to make everything hard to get to and bizarrely placed.
It’s way easier if you take the whole front of the car. It’s a a little bit more work for a lot easier chain replacement.
@@P0PET0948 i didn't have any room restrictions at all. So why take the front end of the car off again???
Well replacing intake filter requires removing front bumper, also Panamera has the most electronic systems within porsche family, and some porsche indie shop straight refuse to repair them. There is a reason why 4-door porsche depreciates so much, whereas some 911 appreciates post pendenmic as well.
You gotta hand it to Samcrac, he knows how to make an entertaining video. I'm not even interested in Porsche cars or maintenance but I'm hooked from the get go.
Watching Samcrac fixing a Panamera in a farm while outsmarting a dealership is like watching David vs. Goliath in modern times. 😂
Absolute chaddest.
The real question is did he or is this whole vid bs
he didnt outsmart a dealership, they didnt want to do the work and gave him the GFY quote.
I'd like to see Samcrac with a sling loaded with wheel bearings in a boss battle with the Dealership's owner
Wouldn't it be reasonable to have mechanic and service manager expose them to the error of there bad diagnostic and repair suggestions especially at $300 hr.
Huh, I thought $260 per hour at Lexus was outrageous!
Presumably Porsche also put in new coil packs at the same time?
@@markdauncey927 I would be highly surprised though might account for the ludicrous price..? Reading around though, this is just what Porsche charge for plugs. I would imagine coils on top of that would be at least $3000-$4000 more.

Our Mazda (and Subaru) dealer always want $60 ($30 for filter + $30 for labor) to replace the cabin air filter. They always show me an extremely dirty filter packed w/leaves from trees we don't have AND the cars are garage kept. Dealerships never fail to disappoint, nice fix.

Never, never, ever go to a dealership for any kind of work!
Put a complaint with Corperate about the technician and the dealership for their practices. For the tech not to see that the plastic guides were damaged is absolutely appalling. The service guy probably just looked at the bolts and that was it. Then the up-sale shit. Didn't care if it was running bad or not.
The "Corporate" couldn't care less. They want the dealer to be financially healthy.
And if people pay than it continues to provide the tech incentive.
I do a lot of mechanic work on Vintage and Classic Chevy Trucks & one of the things I learned really fast was purchasing OEM products gave the most longevity and most importantly to me, eliminated all unknown variables, when the issue can’t be 100% pinpointed (i.e. isolated the actual symptom but not the cause)
I do agree that OEM parts are almost always unreasonabley more expensive but they come with a level of engineering and testing backed by a multi-billion dollar company so 95%+ of the time you can be certain it will perform as intended w/o conflicting with other parts or its surroundings.
I got quoted 700$ once on my 2004 f150. I am guessing they are replacing coil packs etc..... Did it myself for 30$
Spark plug replacement with not free wallet cleanout.
Just started watching your vids. Huge kudos to you for how you document and narrate the vids. Love them!
Not covering the intakes working outside.
That's confidence
Driving nice cars comes at a great cost that most of us on the planet could never justify. It would be one thing if the cost was mostly the original purchase price. But in actuality it's the cost in the long run from maintenance. We'd all be bankrupt with a $10k repair. One thing goes wrong and we're broke.
These videos are so satisfying to watch :) The out of Gas made me chuckle and got excited when it started. Good for you guys for proving if you have the knowledge and skill you can save a beautiful car at a REAL cost. I wish I could drive a beautiful car like this.
Did anybody notice that the top engine mount wasn't bolted in and yet the engine hardly rocked? 👀 Sam, it's time to get a head band to hold your camera bro. Working on cars with one hand is crazy. Good job tho💪🏆
You doing this in the Florida heat is impressive!
If I had a nickel for every video I watched today about a guy repairing a non running car who at the very end can’t get it to start because he forgot to put gas in it, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice…
Stealership and untrained staff.
No they’re trained. Trained to get as much money from you as possible. I used to deliver to these types of dealerships and you can overhear all kinds of overcharging being done in service. No integrity.
absolutely agrree stealership
How hot was the previous owners elbow?
It's like, f*cking Popeye owned the car or some sh*t! 😂
Last driver must have been a beast, he had arm hair like a porcupine.
Sam's yard looks like a gathering of affluent friends and family. Unfortunately it is riddled in a mass of superlatives amongst a field of dreams realized or failed attempts. Its seems to go one way or the other.
Those prices are the reason why the right to repair is so important!
Great video! I had a cayenne GTS with a drain plug that was even worse. They strip pretty easily. I was actually able to get it out with using a hammer and a flat blade screw driver and hitting it on an angle. The drain plug is aluminum so it makes impressions easily.
All that work and aftermarket parts.....
"Amazon Timing Kit".....😂
Aftermarket is one thing and doesn't necessarily mean bad. Amazon timing kit with no brand... Yeah. That's a different story. I would never buy something like this. The chain will probably be quite weak, the guides... They may wear just that much faster or snap to pieces.
He's going to flip it. As long as it runs, that's all it needs to do. Every extra cent spent on better parts is one less cent worth of profit.
Sam should start a PorchA dealer
Front PorchA dealer
Over 2000 $ for sparkplugs? They should go to jail for that, thats a fucking scam
Hopefully there's a 2nd part to this video of you driving it
Coming up shortly!
