Circumstantial cases are often the strongest. The public just doesn’t have a good understanding of what “circumstantial evidence” actually is. Direct evidence in the form of eye witness testimony can be problematic, as is now well known.

The planned attack idea is chilling, especially considering that these hikers were traveling together and were attacked anyway. You can take some comfort in the knowledge that most bad guys are too lazy to walk more than a few hundred feet from their vehicles, as evidenced by the lack of litter once you get away from the trailhead.

People get murdered in their own homes every day. I had a relative who was attacked and left for dead by a serial killer IN HER OWN HOME WHILE SHE SLEPT! So don't be deterred if you love nature, but educate yourself in regards to fending off 2-legged predators. Don't sleep in shelters. Don't divulge personal information or trail plans to strangers. Don't be afraid to leave the trail or change directions if feeling uncomfortable about a stranger. Hike off trail to camp, where you can't be seen or seen hiking to your camp. Carry a weapon and a personal locator beacon. I've carried even where it's illegal, because I'd rather be fined or jailed than die!

Exactly - I would advise always carrying a weapon - squeamish about firearms? At least carry a strong defensive spray! "Trailside murders" aren't common, but they are savage and often the victims were slain with no witnesses, and potential help hours or days away - by then it's far too late. I feel so awful for the victims, and I'm sure most if not all wished they had something effective to fight back with as they were being killed.

“Managing” a young child sounds unloving and cold. In this case this little boy was in grade school and younger as his family broke up-imagine losing every one of your 6 brothers as sisters and your mother after your father abandoned you-then at the age of 8 or 9 sent to a new place completely cut off from your family-instead of staying together or even close. No wonder he started to run away etc.. We all took our wonderful childhoods for granted. Little children like this one only knew hardship, insecurity and worse.

Why is it so often some ex military guy.
It’s so scary some people seem destined to be k1llers. But I do believe in maybe not free will but free won’t. The idea we are trained to fight our baser instincts. Sure sometimes when I’m mad I want to throw stuff but my brain is trained to not act on those rushes of anger. Some people don’t stop themselves and lack empathy to the point they don’t feel bad about hurting someone. It’s unfathomable. But I’ve been around people like this; I know it can and does happen but I can’t imagine being like that. Ever.

I don't think serving in the military is the risk factor, but perhaps being kicked out of the military is. However, there are other risk factors that may coincide with military service, such as poverty, early childhood adverse experiences, and lack of family support.

I don't like your conclusion in this one. They worked with "young offenders" (3:37), meaning, yng people who indulged only in petty criminality, typically. The segment in which you used the word psychopathology at 14:12 quasi-implies that their "young offenders" were all psychopaths prone to violence. I'd be surprised if it was really the case. If really you found that the organisation they were working for was oriented toward helping hardened and violent offenders to find a better path, you should have provided this detail, thus making your conclusion more solid. It's almost as if your social philosophy was that its pointless for a society to try to help petty offenders develop a "better version of themselves", since sooner or later they'll all be proven to be psychopaths.

I used to hike a lot on the Pacific Crest Trail and I was always immediately suspicious of anyone carrying a gun. Very few people do and in my experience they're either up to no good or they're extremely paranoid, neither of which is very safe for the people around them. Yes, there are some unique dangers to hiking, especially hiking solo (which is what I almost always did), but you're probably in much less danger out on the trail than in the average city. I'm not against guns, by the way, I own several myself and keep one in my nightstand at home, it just always seemed ridiculous (and impractical) to carry them on the trail.

I am curious how many people travel that Appalachian Trail, I would imagine many of them are inexperienced hikers that are not aware of how difficult of task is ahead of them.
I have heard that some hikers refuse to socialize in groups, those hikers would be at the highest risk if someone attacks them.
I am curious if a strong connection to nature makes someone less likely to commit all crimes.

It's getting to the point where people using our country's parks, hiking trails, state game lands, etc. need to be randomly background checked. Too many stories just like this one over and over again. And no, being aware is not enough to keep anyone safe. I love to hike, walk, wander, photograph, research and enjoy the outdoors but I'm personally aggravated that it's not safe to enjoy public outdoor spaces without being aggressively intimidated and harassed time and again.

Sometimes geography provides interesting metaphors for human behavior. Working with terms like "lower" and "higher" audiences can see the important differences in these domains. The lower order or domain includes: abandonment, waistbands, running away, dropouts, severe mental depression, drifters, grave digger, putting knives to someone's throat, swamps, naked bodies, decapitation, garbage, beer, shacks, lean-to, attacks, convictions, sentencing, bustling, jam packed, long days, grocery stores, Greyhound buses....All of these lower elements are part of our story, the human story. Is it comical, tragic, neither or both? thank you.
