My dad did all the ceilings in the house by roller extra thick and then went dabbing the roller up and down. I had to patch in an airing cupboard when it was removed and a polystyrene ceiling rose that started to break up due to the weight of Hoover and iron flexes being dangled from the fitting had pulled the plaster away from the lats. I came along and tried to remove the polystyrene and a 2 ft ballon-shaped section came down. I made a right mess of the ceiling and it resembles an early pregnant stomach, but the bloody thing is rock hard. The paint effect I managed to somewhat recreate with a stipple/basil brush, but that ruined the expensive brush. 30 years on I still have the hairy bump in the ceiling. :) The airing cupboard turned out a bit better and even managed to match the fall of the eves, still not a great job. top tip on Monocouche render scratching the final coat if you are doing this in winter you can do it the same day just get a small gas bottle and a touch gun this is what flat roofers use for touch on felt let it go off for 1 or 2 hours then lightly put the flame all over it do 2 meters at a time that will get the moisture out of the top coat and should be ok to do a scratch the same day saves you going back the following day i done this method years ago you only need a light flame from the gun just comes with practice get the balance right hope you like this tip
Love your videos (retired builder 15 years). I have not read all the other comments but I I thought only qualified electricians were allowed to do work in kitchens and bathrooms so I would keep quiet about that small job to switch in case someone dobs you in. Plastering tip - I have just done EWI render system on my sons new house - the 1.5mm silicone render finish has devastated 3 sets of working clothes so wear disposable overalls!! Keep up the good work.
Hey Kirk...just to say how much I enjoyed this video...took my mind off our own problems property wise ( and age wise..) and when energy comes back I may have a go at some....that lath ceiling could have been a nightmare but you sorted it (even using ‘modern’ materials) ..... Glad to say that the old lime stuff is now very available..but somewhat upgraded for more time conscious use..I.e. NHL limes ..but I would have had to think carefully about which strength to use..1/ or 2 or 3 grade..could be useful to research as there is surprisingly Many houses still with lots o lath in situ..The Old lime putty very available and very light but slow drying..so I guess when you said ‘maybe a touch of gypsum in the original lime plaster’ they used that to get a bit of a set ?..Not sure that’s a good combo, but hey, the ‘old tradesman’ knew a bit most of the time through donkeys of handed down tricks..Found it fascinating to see as I have done some traditional lime work...but main thing is you did it anyway ! The lady must have been so pleased..Many thanks..
Im a plasterer myself kirk. 33 and being watching you for a a few years now we've a similar background a dad with heavy hands and a strong mother , you give me belief life will get better
‘Salt of the earth’ that’s what I would describe you as. We use to ‘bag it’ to get a similar stippled effect. Scrunch up a plaggy bag until it was a tightish fist size ball, then just touch and pull off, or twist and pull for a swirl and central stipple.
this bathroom Im doing has lath and plaster, lime plaster as you say and cedar laths ! Smells wonderful when tyou trim it off with an angle grinder. Whole ceiling had to come down, thousands of little tacks and hundreds of clout nails driven into the hardest ceiling joists Ive ever seen. Probably hardened with age, but very close grained, no pine smell when cut. Lime plaster on the walls too, still not rock hard after 100 years but stuck like shite on a shovel to the brickwork. Impressive stuff.

Kirk, do you do all this alone or do you have professional help with the editing and the overall setting of the videos? ( french speaker here sorry )
Hi Kirk mate, watch you for a bit now, I’m a decorator for an insurance company and I urge you get a azzy test, especially for lath and plaster, In my job even tho I’m a decorator I also have to rip ceilings down because of leaks ect, and I won’t touch them until they’ve been tested in multiple places in the ceiling

Hey Kirk, I'll be plastering a couple of bedrooms at home soon, both have cracks behind the rads (2-3mm wide. Internal render, 70's build). I'm almost certain they'll come through after a skim, do you think a wide scrim is enough, I have some render mesh if not. Cheers, Stu 👍🏼
@@Onthetrowelyeah it's split through to the block too, not really sure what's cause that. Cool, I'll take a look at the stitching kit. Failing that, dot & dabbing that wall could be good, that way the area's bridged? Thanks pal. Hope all is well with ya 👍🏼
It was horse hair mixed into the lime plaster. It was still available when my house was renovated. If the synthetic hair is acceptable for listed buildings and works the same thats good.
The SBR would also help stop water absorbing into the wood, so limiting shrinking as it drys out, you did a perfect job there mate. I would of just used bonding for both coats, but would of put cement in the mix to make it set quicker, also I find the cement makes the plaster set harder, for the texture finish, I might of made a slurry/watery mix of setting plaster and dabbed it on with a brush. I see you are using a stainless steel trowel now.

Good improvising on the ceiling, that finish is usually done with a roller with plaster on, different rollers different finish. mostly done on houses in 1940's.
Hi Kirk just tried my hand at re skimming a alcove wall ready to paint but it has dried leaving a couple of air line crack is this normal and how can you rectify this
The original plaster would have had horse hair reienforcing plaster doesn't have that making it more prone to cracking i cut out the shape of the hole to put a piece of plaster board then used fibre glass tape in the gap to reinforce the join. In N Z as we don't have the mixes available in the UK. You have to be careful with french plaster or plaster of paris joining yo modern gypsum board so i paint the edge of the old surface doesn't react turning the modern filler to powder over time.
You would never make an insurance contractor. Lathe and plaster? Cant patch, rip it all down! Textured coating? Cant match, rip it all down! You must be the best plasterer in the country. Great work 👍
Years ago there was a polycell product that came straight out of the tub and applied it with a roller. It was sold as a cheats artex. The result was similar to this ceiling finish.
What a sound lad you are, Kirk. Im sure you're loved very dearly by your family. What a fantastic channel you have and thanks to your advice i have enhanced my novice plastering techniques ❤
The carrier bag was best used for the broken leather effect, when done correctly looked classy compared to the different stipple effects when artex was in its prime.
Wow Kirk wot a man you are ,you clearly haven't forgotten your early life and family ,i love watchi g your videos just because of the man you are ,you are doing your family proud, lovely to see there a still genuine guys around like yourself, respectto you Kirk ❤.
Awesome detail covering a problem I've come across on occasion. Your flick finish looked really first class, i use a hand flicker machine to help limit the mess. Hope all is OK mate and looking forward to the next one 👍
Nice one Wez. How you keeping mate, not seen you for ages. I think the last time I saw you was when you had been on a night out and took that truck for a drive 🤣🤣 hope your well mate
You reminded me and hopefully others that in this life, friendship, love and family are more important than any other aspect of our being. Ultimately that is what we will remember and probably all that matters.
Did you have the old Artex checked for asbestos? Interested because I couldn't find any mention in the vid about it. It would be a good thing in any videos like this to at least do a brief PSA and spread awareness of the potential risks, even if the job you're on is tested and safe. Good job with what you had to work with though.
On the trowel. I've noticed that your expertise goes beyond just plastering, and I’m curious to learn more about the full range of skills you cover. In one of your videos, you were advising a customer on a ceiling issue, which seemed to involve more than just plastering. In schools and colleges, the focus is primarily on plastering, but it’s clear there’s more to this trade. Could you share some insight into the other areas of work you handle in your field?
I can't lay bricks very well but appart from that then I can basically do it all be it just slower. Electrical, joinery, plumbing, tiling, kitchen/ bathroom fitting, ground works, roofing etc. I was quite lucky that my dad put me to work at a very early age and i had the opportunity to work with a lot of builders, I'm also one of those people that has a very keen desire to learn. Hence now I'd like to add video editing to my list of skills but I think there's still a bit of room for improvement 🤣
To be honest mate, I don't worry about much at all. I wish I did sometimes... not much bothers me. That said, theirs only between 2% - 6% white asbestos in artex which just so happens to be the least dangerous, so much so that the HSE have said that the general public can rip it out and take it to the tip. All other types of asbestos (blue, brown etc etc) you need a licence to remove. It wasn't that long ago that they were still putting white asbestos in brake shoes for cars so chances are if your a cyclist then you have probably inhaled more of it than me. I believe when your numbers up then its time to go 🤷♂️🙂
@@Onthetrowel i like your perspective mate. I’m a sparky and i worry about asbestos on an almost daily basis. I had to watch my nan die of asbestosis which was horrendous, i think that had an affect on me. There is probably a lot worse things to worry about but I can’t help it lol
Sisel the synthetic hair is called mate (dartboards are made from them aswell) sisel comes from a cactus plant , I used to use a lot of sisel when making ceiling roses , dado rails , panels etc for strength , I used hessian for coving and bigger plaster products but yet sisel would be used for the smaller products , not the nicest material to use either 😂 gets everywhere man …. Big up lynne , don’t make those loving generational women much nowadays do they
Kirk, i've alway wondered, if you knew nothing about Plastering but as a youngster if you was offered to either to start out as a labourer, then down the line becoming a contractor or try learning how to becme a plasterer, without knowing anything about plastering ???🤔
Even before I saw this video I just knew you were a good person Kirk, there’s just something about your personality that says I’m a good guy without you boasting.
That box gives you more torque, meaning you don't need to rev it out like normal to get the power. You'll be able to shift at lower RPMs now meaning you will essentially save some fuel.

You would never make an insurance contractor. Lathe and plaster? Cant patch, rip it all down! Textured coating? Cant match, rip it all down! You must be the best plasterer in the country. Great work 👍
It could be argued it's like the difference between a mechanic and a part's fitter.
Years ago there was a polycell product that came straight out of the tub and applied it with a roller. It was sold as a cheats artex. The result was similar to this ceiling finish.
Polytex and polyripple
Kirk, please put some eye protection on, you're too awesome, got to protect those eyes ! Great video, thank you.
And please stop putting on that Jeremy Kyle sort of music.
You Can get the point across without that soppy crap!
What a sound lad you are, Kirk.
Im sure you're loved very dearly by your family.
What a fantastic channel you have and thanks to your advice i have enhanced my novice plastering techniques ❤
I think that pattern was originally obtained by putting a plastic carrier bag over the trowel and sort of dabbling the plaster
The carrier bag was best used for the broken leather effect, when done correctly looked classy compared to the different stipple effects when artex was in its prime.
In my house i take the whole thing down, everything and then put plasterboard on the joists and plaster on top.
People from Merseyside are so pure of heart
What a good man I'm new to your channel and I've learnt quite a lot I always wondered how that got that texture in old ceilings haha
Wow Kirk wot a man you are ,you clearly haven't forgotten your early life and family ,i love watchi g your videos just because of the man you are ,you are doing your family proud, lovely to see there a still genuine guys around like yourself, respectto you Kirk ❤.
Love this... Kirk you're a good man - a big soft teddy bear the world needs! Giving her an invoice for £0.00 is the icing on the cake. Kudos to you.
Awesome detail covering a problem I've come across on occasion. Your flick finish looked really first class, i use a hand flicker machine to help limit the mess. Hope all is OK mate and looking forward to the next one 👍
Kirk is one of the most respectful and kind hearted person I know and if he could help you he would
Nice one Wez. How you keeping mate, not seen you for ages.
I think the last time I saw you was when you had been on a night out and took that truck for a drive 🤣🤣 hope your well mate
You reminded me and hopefully others that in this life, friendship, love and family are more important than any other aspect of our being. Ultimately that is what we will remember and probably all that matters.
well done Kirk
As Bran Stark said to Theon Greyjoy : ... *_"You're a Good Man..."_*
you had me in tears there Kirk in the end, what a lovely gesture, all the best to you mate.😭
Did you have the old Artex checked for asbestos? Interested because I couldn't find any mention in the vid about it. It would be a good thing in any videos like this to at least do a brief PSA and spread awareness of the potential risks, even if the job you're on is tested and safe. Good job with what you had to work with though.
I'd paint it with a textured paint
@Onthetrowel Thank you for you're Response
Top man Kirk great to look after people who have looked after your family ♥️♥️
Good to see you back Kirk. Trust all’s well! 💪🏽👍🏽
We're getting there mate. Thanks for asking 🙏
Do you ever worry about asbestos exposure kirk?
Big man - big heart. Another cracking video Kirk
Big up lynne , don’t make those loving generational women much nowadays do they
Out of curiosity as somebody learning the trade, how did you identify that lime wash paint was used under the artex kirk?
Looks like a dabbed corse sponge or fluffy roller to get the finish…no idea
Kirk, i've alway wondered, if you knew nothing about Plastering but as a youngster if you was offered to either to start out as a labourer, then down the line becoming a contractor or try learning how to becme a plasterer, without knowing anything about plastering ???🤔
Even before I saw this video I just knew you were a good person Kirk, there’s just something about your personality that says I’m a good guy without you boasting.
That was a really nice thing to do for your mums friend and I’m sure she will be made up with it , good things happen to good people
That box gives you more torque, meaning you don't need to rev it out like normal to get the power. You'll be able to shift at lower RPMs now meaning you will essentially save some fuel.
Kirk im a paramedic looking for a change of career thinking plumbing or plastering how can i make the switch effectively... 20 years as a paramedic has been looking enough
If you ever stay in Caerphilly South Wales for work, please let me know on here or via my website. Would love to take you out for a meal and to some local places for free. Such a nice man and deserves it all for sure. You can also meet my best friend from PRD who loves your channel.
Very kind of you to say that thankyou
Big lad strikes again.. May your kindness come back to you ten-fold!
You can cut a bigger square hole which would take plaster board also just re tack over the whole ceiling 🤷🏻♂️
Not if the customer doesn't want it pal 👍
🤣far enough
Top man ,personality heart & workmanship
The artex has been applied with similar too a tesco carrier bag scrunched up...
Kirk do you think you should have an R&D asbestos survey before you disturb any textured coated ceilings !!
Ultimately mate if they find asbestos then the job will still need doing anyway and the ceiling had already been disturbed when it fell down mate
Kirk that job for Lynn ye mum's mate is a credit to you pal and was one from the heart, well done 👍
Its nice to be nice mate i was all about the money but jobs like this mean the world to me😢
Kirk buddy , I've had to try and match textured ceilings , they are a nightmare,. I've used a plastic bag wrapped to a paint roller to get a similar affect, top video buddy
