    Cracking video both, i can certainly empathise with both of you, i started bricklaying in 1970 (retired from it now, 2 years ago), but to be fair it was a good life, hard but good. It enabled my wife and i to successfully bring up our 8 children. And i must say that both of your excellent video channels have helped me loads in being able to now go on and help my own (now adult children) with their refurbishment first home projects. So thanks Roger and Kirk you've both been a great help to me, and yes you're right, every day is a school day!! Please keep the great advice coming 😀👍.

    Loads of books about plastering, who'd have thought! My brother worked with a plasterer in a juvenile reform place, Father Roches in Cotk city, a wild spot.. Said he was the classiest guy he ever worked with, and the best tradesman. Walls were straight and glass like. His name was Gussie. God bless and rest Gussie who took the rough of Cork city in Father Roches and made things smooth. My brother Sean faked being rough to earn money and raise me, my siblings, cheers Sean, I got your back

    Good hearing you lads talking about how the plastering trade has changed over the years. I'm retired now, but was a third generation plasterer, I started in 1972, very little skimming back then, it was nearly all float and set piece work on big sites, it was such hard graft, I dont think the youngsters could cope with it these days. There was so much to the trade back in those days too. A lot of people dont know that floor screeding, granolithic, fibrous plaster, rendering pebble dashing and tacking was all part of the job. I did it for 30 years before re-training as a carpenter, so much cleaner and easier than plastering the old way

    I owe a lot to Kirk and people like you Roger. So far I used up 22 ton of plastering sand on garden walls/ landscape walls. Then indoors floating 140m2 house then 2 coat skimming ceils and walls.
    A self build, I did the M&E. But have done 24 years as a site manager. Started s student labourer, the jnr foreman, Foreman engineer, finally to large commercial or housing schemes. So I had the fundamentals of site organization. I have really enjoyed the step into plastering. No way would do jobs for others. I have complete respect for professional plasterers.

    I remember in the late 80s or very early 90s a brick layer I new had to leave Britain due to him being under cut on price by the firms taking on cheap workers taking lower money ,
    So he went over to Germany for several months , and told me over there a company were spraying plaster on the walls then the plasterers would follow with there trowels,
    Very hard going but paid pretty well,

    Hi and I’m sorry to bother you guys I’m new to woodworking and I don’t know who to ask. I’m disabled with rheumatoid arthritis which has turned my hands 90 degrees outwards. I use a wheelchair sometimes and had a couple of small strokes at present im using a dw604nt orbital sander nothing wrong with it it’s great but I’ve been looking at getting a small to medium open end drum sander. I’m looking at building end grain chopping boards and people say drum sander is best for end grain. Do you think this might be the best option for me I value your opinion on it and don’t really know anyone I can ask.
    Many many thanks steve 👨🏼‍🦽.
    P.s. keep up the fantastic work you do 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  6 місяців тому

      Hi Steve
      I understand why people say a drum sander is best but they are expensive. You can get a belt sander with a stand and rest, or make one and it will do the same job but it can also be used for the face as well as the end grain. ua-cam.com/video/GvTvEBQ1Lss/v-deo.html

    Plastering boasting that they are the fastest is like chippies boasting about how many doors they can swing in a day.
