Nice job Kirk. As a bricklayer now general builder i find myself finishing off and clearing up after every other trade. Electricians and plumbers are the worst. I expect it and price for it so it doesnt stress me. As i do all my own drylining i always get reveals spot on, cavity closers in and fixed. My plasterer wouldve walked off the job and whoever fitted the window without the cavity closers in first wants a rocket where the sun dont shine. Youve clearly got the patience of a saint and a bit of savvy
I beg your pardon! It's the Decorator who tidies up behind other trades. I'm coming up on 50 yrs in the trade and it's the same today as it was when I started my apprenticeship in 1976. It's also a fact that I tidy up other trades work such as poor joints in facings and skirting. Oh and skim marks and indents in nice new plaster. 😅
Nice to see plenty of dabs on the wall. Glad you recommend to put it all round the socked boxes so many don’t then it pulls back as you tighten the socket screws.
Just seen this Kirk, know exactly what you mean, builders and fitters always say Oh! The tiler will get over that, well I always did too. Now it’s up to the builder now I hung my trowels up last year when I was 75 that was 60 years of lickin’ n’ stickin’ Yahoo! no more grouting. Keep on spreadin’ 😊
Didnt see you taking out that packer on the floor! As a tiler, you can just imagine the words of appreciation we have for plasterers leaving those in , especially when they're covered in dried plaster that was dropped, and often have been screwed to the floor.. the least of which is NOT MY JOB to remove them!
Great work mate. The brickie probably left the row of bricks out thinking it would be cased in concrete and also DPC and insulation used to stop cold spots from the sil. This is how it was always done on any sites that I worked on.
Love your work mate! You make it look easy, but for most of us (without your wealth of knowledge) it is not. Great to see someone doing things properly!
Thanks for video, the initial state of that room reminds me why I do as much of my own work and avoid having tradesmen around as much as I possibly can.
I'm desperate to change jobs and work for myself - trying to learn as much as I can before making the jump in a few years hopefully. This video was great and I learned loads! Thanks a lot, gonna watch a few more now.
If the bathroom was downstairs, you can save yourself a ball ache of measuring by just simply measuring the 'depth' of window opening you need... then fit the pl board, making sure the window is 'cracked open'. Then go outside, open the window wide and cut the top part out from outside... Say about 100-150mm down, you could even just cut two squares in the top corners (100 x 100). Then go inside, measure your depth down the depth you require and the whole 'cut out' is guaranteed to be perfect with no haggly measuring. Then cut the rest of the window opening out. Show this on a video the next time you get a downstairs window. Saves a tonne of time and messing about! Remember who told you the idea - Tony.
I allways got told when I was learning you start with the reveals first. you find your tightest point and that's your measurement insuring the head cill and reveals will all be the same margins, because if your windows are out the reveals will be aswell
Yes. That is how I was taught, to do the reveals first. The way I was taught was to start in one room, put reveals on first, then put other walls on, then go back to dab the window walls once the reveals have set. Having said that, Kirk must know what he's doing as he's been doing it for years. Everyone gets taught differently.
Hi mate I've just bought a 1930s house, can you nip round and do the plastering please? And 1st and 2nd fix plumbing and electrics, internal wall insulation, underfloor heating and new roof? Cheers!
Brill video from the first second seeing the proper silver knife iv had mine ones for about 20 years beats all them posh new ones. You do exactly what my old boss taught me, every little tip, thats why we are the best out there 😁
Nice to see pay attention to nice right angled window reveals. I recently had some plasterboarding done near a window and the reveals are all over the show. Pulled them up about it and their answer was “I plaster over what’s there, if it’s not straight it’s not my fault, I’m not gonna get a spirit level on it am I?” Not sure how to fix it now tbh 😢
Great to see some work vids again! Personal Question: what do you prefer when plastering a concrete wall that meets a drywall ceiling? No ceiling and fix the wall first, or plaster against the ceiling?
Ello felle. Just come across your channel and gone through your previous videos.😂 a bloke told me awhile ago, it takes a certain kind of person do to become a good plasterer. i’m 30 years in it. We’re all bonkers..
One thing i always do is to foam the frame gap if its not been done it’s a bad spot for cold entry and it’s to regs that way. Not a criticism you always do a good job m8
Why did you not pack the board up to the ceiling, and do the soil pipe section separately? Assuming you need to skim it anyway (I'm new to plastering but done a few jobs so far)
Now mate a quick question for you. I have started skimming my kitchen wall with multifinish but I encountered a problem so I had to stop half way through the wall so my question is. Is it possible to start skimming again from the dry plaster I have featherd it into the wall just not sure if I need to do anything special. I am no professional plasterer but i used to work as a dry liner a good while back so no the basics and done a couple of walls at home already
Another excellent job done, continually amazed by your professionalism and ethics, you're a great man Kirk. Really wish I could find a plasterer like you in East London, long shot but if you know anyone please do let me know - happy to throw 100 quid your way for the referral.
Hi Kirk, watch your videos a lot love the advice. Could do with picking your brain though. I skimmed over an artex ceiling on Friday. Second coat was on by 11:30 thought great. Plaster was still soaking by 4 o’clock 😮 plus when I tried to towel the ceiling I wanted to tear real bad. Have you had this before?
@@Onthetrowel first thing I checked yeah plenty of date. I usually find with artex the plaster takes up pretty quick. Never seen plaster stay wet for hours and hours like that. 4 o’clock on a Friday is time for the pub haha
Why is there so little detail paid to fitting the cavity closer? Very little info on UA-cam. How was it fixed? How did you make it sturdy enought to stick your board to it?. The plastic is very flimsy. I personally think these closers are crap, prefer the old method of closing with brick/block, much stronger. Would like to see a video of you doing external render on a door for example where you have to fix some form of expanded metal lathe over the plastic closer. Got to do it at home, builder just left it because he didn't know how to finish it saying the plasterer should know. And guess what. Wish you had 100 clones working around the UK? 😅😅
You don't need to worry about fire protection on external walls mate. If anything, the architects etc would prefer for those walls to fail, lets smoke out quicker.
This is why i had to go work for myself, i always had too many people cutting corners and expecting me too, i will happily spend an extra day going balls out on a job so i know it is absolutely perfect. Way too many people who just want to get paid and fk off to the pub
I'd like to think I'm a professional plasterer.. Open the bathroom windows 1st for dust etc... Also cut the reveals 1st get them dabbed on and setting . Then board the face of the wall Good job though kirk👍 Making me want to do a UA-cam channel
Correct, my brother gets F off about all that. Pressure on to hand over the job and everything been banged about, and other late running trades are walking through or in the same space.
@@Onthetrowel looks like you went above and beyond to make the best of the error someone else has made. If it's a small job and lots of trades are coming and going doing small bits of work things like closures get passed to the next man.

Hi Kirk, good to see you back. Would it not have been easier to cut out the window and then carry it in holding from inside the cut out?

wouldn't mind betting that external wall will condensate to buggery especially if the studs and ceiling around it are insulated
Good to see you back

Finally a Video 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Keep it up Kirk
Nice work mate as always
Love the videos. So much gold!!
Finally Kirk been looking forward to a video 😁🤩
DIYer here. For longevity shouldn’t moisture resistant board be used in a bathroom?
They usually just put them in showers pal but in my opinion, you'd be better using cement board rather than any plasterboard.
Been a while, but i love playing the maracas .........
thats neatest i seen a window bordered 😂👍

That plasterboarding that the plumber did needs at least double the amount of screws in it compared to what he had done

looked like PIR insulation
I hope you report the people who do shoddy work.
This is not a tradesman's code, those are thieves and liars!

not enough wall ties should be every course around windows
Left for the painter!

What about decorators? They put right all the other trades cock ups

I could write a book on this subject. The amount of time I’ve lost due to other trades in my 40+ years as a decorator. It’s criminal.
And tilers cover up the bows in the walls plasterers leave 🙄
Window board should be fitted first and should of put off cut on the bottom.
Tiled wall mate, no window board unfortunately
closures should be in before the windows so long before you get on site lol
