Good to see your not shouting and swearing at your apprentice, back in my day apprentices were treated like shit and you had to become thick skinned very quick, your patience and skill is for all to see. Top bloke
Know what you mean; been on the receiving end... There's no need for it. Especially if you want them to stay. They're you're investment (time, money, friendship etc etc) - So wouldn't you look after your investment? I'm not talking wiping arse and hand-holding; but the bare minimum "be nice". Just seems to be a "thing" in the industry, which seems to be fading which is good. Google had/has done it right - They used to (or still idk) treat their employees exceptionally and invest in them. What happens? Loyalty, good work, and they re-invest in the company (teaching others, staying, skill up).
Back in my day, too. That was less than 15 years. Treated like a total cunt, alot of tradesman have the attitude of I was treated like a cunt so I treat them like a cunt, I never treated badly or shouted at an apprentice. They are just kids. Usually,
Shout out to Laytons camera skills. If my plaster went off like that in a job like that I would have a heart attack but Kirk is absolutely chillin. Absolute class mate.
We all start somewhere. I went to college , lost my place through having a daughter born and work load. Decided to contact local plasterers to volunteer help in return for training .found a little Irish man!! Best plasterer I've had the pleasure of working with .. taught me everything I needed to put a nice spread on !! 👍👍
You’re a great teacher, and Layton appears to have a good attitude & initiative. Looks like a winning combination to me. If he’s smart, he’ll stick with you and soak up your knowledge. Being able to have a laugh, whilst getting the job done makes all the difference! BTW, I think you’ll be moving on with a TV career very quickly. You’re made for it.
Oh man, when you mentioned about the holes for the lights to tidy them up reminds me of when we were on site there was a really bad tempered sparky, so on the last house we did ( it was a big site back in the 80s, one house after another). We virtually almost filled the socket and light sockets with plaster, serves him right 😂
That would be a good video of how to fix a wall with cracks in, due to shrinkage, movement etc. Would you bed the render mesh in with the board finish?
Hi kirk I mix in a bucket and put the bucket inside a bigger bucket, then three quarters fill water tip bag in at a time, slow mix ,then faster,,,any slop goes in big bucket,so I can do it in one mix, any way luv the videos and tea shirts, cheers kirk
Love watching your videos, I wa a sparky for 30 odd years but gid up through ill health plasterers and chippies always amazed me , yamma top mon Kirk hope Leyton stays he seems a good bloke !
Could watch you all day mate. So personable and fantastic at sharing your knowledge. Learn so much. Such a god send from some of the egotistical tradesmen on Yt. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cant fault your patuence and kindness towards Layton. A lot of gaffers treat young lads as dog's bodies, but tou seem different. Im sure you'll have your monents at times like the rest of us, but Layton seems very keen to learn and hopefully everything will work out great. Absolutely love this channel by the way❤
It’s always a joy watching you plaster mate, you really make plastering look like a work of art. I have a question. So I have recently started working for a plasterer who is very old school. He absolutely insists that I don’t do two separate mixes and both coats must go on with the same mix. Apparently this is the proper way of plastering, now being a novice myself this has made my job increasingly more difficult as the plaster has gone quite stiff by the time I get my next coat on … so my whole day is just soo much more difficult and I’m absolutely shattered by the end of it. You being a time served plasterer is this a common way of doing sets? The few plasterers I have worked with always mix up a fresh batch for their second coat and everyone I have come across on UA-cam does the same (including you), but when I try and tell this guy he insists that this is not the proper way of doing it. What are your thoughts on this method? Cheers Bee
He sounds like a fella who doesn't want you to learn mate , a little water to soften it up is the way to lay in. Alternatively mix what you need to cover your area 1st time at the same time mix a third or so much wetter than your first mix and this should be just right to lay in. This is the method used by plasterers who work on price. Hope this helps my friend, give it a try
@@robwoods1952 thanks for your advise mate. Hmmm … I’m not sure if it’s soo much that he doesn’t want me to learn or it’s because of his stubbornness and unwilling to accept that there is more ways to skin a cat than just his way. I mean I’ve plastered 3 properties with him so far, and he does both coats with the same mix, I mean last Friday he took out plaster that I was about to throw away that was 45 minutes since it was mixed, and he was like “why you throwing that away?!! it’s still soft!” And he put on 3 reveales with it!! I would have been completely exhausted and even probably sprained my hand spreading plaster that stiff. But he did it. So I think it’s more likely that this is the way he was taught. And in his mind it’s the only way that works. So whilst im with him I’m going to have to adjust to his method. If it doesn’t injure me, it’s definitely gunna make me stronger and more conditioned.
Love your vids mate. Great plasterer. I ve been a landscaper 38 years so appreciate a good tradesman. Good luck Layton nothing like having a role model to learn from. I did stood me in good stead for rest of my life.
Why do plasterers work out of buckets rather than tipping it onto a board on a stand like they used to? Would of thought that would be easier as you don't have to keep putting your float down to load your hawk? And your bucket can be cleaned out straight away ready for another mix? I'm a builder (done a bit) not a plasterer. Just curious? 👍
Decent fella you are Kirk, used to be a lot of them around but nowadays few and far between. Oh roger bisby! You will have to teach him how to plaster properly then 😂😂. Another proper decent fella is roger.
Do you ever use stilts? I see you’re using several hop-ups, just wondering if it’s because of the floor or if it’s just your preference. Great vid as always all the best to you both 👍🏼
Been watching you for a while its so satisfying watching you plaster no idea why. I should of been a plasterer instead of a engineer sadly 38 now health's shit so instead I'll watch you keep it up fella
You mean Kyran? He explained in a previous video that he went to go and work with disabled people. He'd been volunteering there for a little while and realised that was his thing.
Layton is a very lucky man having you as a teacher nothing better learn from the master and if he learns quick you could treat him to a cadburys cream egg😂 keep up the good work
Looks like he’s going to be a good lad, he’s lucky he’s got you teaching him as he’ll end up a great tradesman. Looking forward to Roger with you on the channel. Regards, Dave.
Great video Kirk as usual. I agree with others, Layton (sorry if that's spelled wrong) is a very lucky lad to have you as a teacher and mentor. Is your mystery UA-cam partner going to be Robin Clevett?
Roger bisby 👌🏻

I still see that happening to the younger apprentices nowadays.. I've never done it but some guys are just a-holes

Well done Layton mate great first day ya won’t learn to plaster off any one better 👍
What a great young man showing drive and intuition, a credit to himself and parents
“You spend more time with your apprentice than you do with your own family” that hit hard.
Same for every tradesman,
Good teaching skills lead to fast learning. Great to see a good team coming together.
Good learner. Keep at it as you have a good mentor 👍
Excellent video Kirk. Great to see a young enthusiastic lad wanting to work 👍
Great tip with sealing old boards :)
Quality of work is second to none Kirk. What a chap as well 👍🏻
Good teachers produce good labourers who go on to be good tradies
Working with you would be a treat.
what a good plasterer and boss you are we need more people like you great stuff
Liked the way he said ceilings not big it’s massive
Said "just 10 boards" like it was nothing. Top man

Layton is a gem 💎 bless him. Seems a good lad and has a great mentor. Bonus for us is not camera shy either 😀 happy days.
Good luck to the lad
Hi Kirk. You can still seal the boards before scrim. I just staple it up. Hope it helps bud
Doing a spot light ceiling myself. Is there any reason why you didn’t use the speed skim on this ceiling to flatten it ?
I'm a Techy but I find these video's so Therapeutic, thanks for another cracking video, and well done to Layton too.

Brilliant video . Always positive and a laugh😅
Been plastering about 4-5years now and always used multi finish for everything. Is there much difference between it and board finish apart from use
Just sets a bit quicker mate

Old way 100% mate
