    Thank u for getting right to the point. I have such a hard time watching people on youtube sometimes because they jabber too much. You answered all the questions I had. I'm so looking forward to painting a China cabinet my neighbor gave me.

      I think it helps to try a practice piece before you begin a large probject... something simple like a candle stick or a picture frame . Thanks for watching, I’m glad you found it helpful

    I have been watching videos all day. Finally! A simple how to without fancy terms I've never heard of or skipping steps without explaining. You, my lady, need to do more of these. Even though it is a bit amateur, Im hoping I will see more updated ones that are even better. Blessings!!!!

    I have watched dozens of videos on chalk painting/waxing techniques and found that most instructors have their own way of painting and waxing techniques. Some wax an entire piece of furniture before removing extra wax, others work in small sections. I like your video because you stick to the issue w/o rambling on about unimportant things ie. when it's raining move indoors! Dahh.

Also, you didn't fail to include the products that you used. So now I can go purchase all the items and do this step by step exactly like you showed. Perfect example of how to use this great paint and wax. I found that using an old fashioned square shoe polish buffing brush works really great to buff up a luster and smoothness to the finished piece. Thanks for your very nice video!

    Super "how to" video..... am doing a 7 ft. old entertainment center. This paint really spreads.... so 1 can is enough for 2 coats. Appreciate your concise and clear instructions. After each step I keep coming back to your video! It's really fun to see the transformation! I removed the hardware and spray painted it with satin nickel rustoleum. Entertainment center was old cherry wood and it is now pale grey! Love it! Thanks again!

      You can mix the dark wax with clear wax to tone it down a bit. Don't use Minwax, as that is a petrolium product and you cannot ever paint over it without stripping or sanding. You can paint right over the specialty waxes created for chalk paints.

    I know no has commented in over a year.....but I would like to add that walmart now has a chalk paint by Waverly. They have a large color palette to choose from and the bottles are only 8oz but they go along way for the price which is $5 each for every product. They have clear, dark, and white waxes and varnishes. I have used many colors on different pieces but following DecoratingMagic's technique, and my pieces are really beautiful. I will say that each paint color is different in characteristics and if anyone has any questions I am happy to answer.

      I really like the Waverly brand from Walmart! I also like the folk art brand. the folk art brand I bought a 16 ounce bottle and it did 2 coats on a humongous mirror and 1 coat and black nightstand plus another coat mixed with another color and covered wonderfully. I however did not like the wax consistency. It is super watery, not at all what I was expecting (especially after seeing a tutorial like this with ASCP) so far I've done 2 wax coats and it still doesn't feel sealed. I've never tried the high end brands so I can't compare

    • @dexter11247

      You can... but it wont get that vintage look.. the wood is sanded down/ or wiped with rough paper pads, to give it a older rustic style....plastic or anything else might have a softer/ weaker style... but TRY IT! you never know!

    I am THRILLED to have found a store about 30 miles from my home that not only carries All Annie Sloan's chalk paints and wax, I think she said there were about 35 to 40 paints, but many more "recipes" for other colors. They give classes, teach techniques, etc..and were so nice. I am disabled and live on a very small income. The owner told me she gave a class where she used the Graphite on a King Size bed and because she wanted it a specific color she used almost 2 can's and then the wax...IT came out beautiful she said. I would rather spend my money on more expensive things like this than the less expensive and learn a hard and very expensive lesson (which I have done in my 60 yrs) I am going up there to watch one of the demo's and make up my mind. I will then decide after I cover one of my antique pieces that is in need of a cover up...Good Luck everyone. I will come back later (probably in the fall ) and let you know if it failed...if I don't, then it did'n't..I am so EXCITED!!!!!!

I did all the steps as you showed me and came out with 3 gorgeous pieces.. A dresser, night stand and a mirror. Thank you again for the video demonstration. It helped me so much! I used chalk paint from lowes and also the clear wax and dark wax came from lowes. The paint went on smoothly and although it took me 2 days to complete it was well worth it. Hi Susan, your vids are very useful!! I'm contemplating doing my own furniture for my new place, I've never any arts & craft in my life (believe it or not), and you make it look so easy and fun!
    A few questions, if I may:
    -Do you need to finish with the dark wax? it appears a tad too dark for my taste
    -If the wooden chair is smothered with the tiniest paint flicks (almost Pollock style) do I need to sand the flicks off? Should I use white spirit or paint stripper altogether?
    -I love the colour you used, which Annie Sloan is it?
    Here in the UK too chalk paint is very expensive but I'm betting on finding some bargain items that I can transform.. :)
    Cheers,
    N

    In our market it is still online only but there are many new companies making chalk paint at more affordable prices...you can even make your own....the waxes on the other hand are still quite expensive

    • @Ac76543211
      @Ac76543211 10 років тому

      You can use furniture wax. Again, no need to buy the soft wax which you used in your video. The videos on how to make chalk paint also show which furniture wax you can use instead.

    • @DecoratingMagic
      @DecoratingMagic  10 років тому +2

      Ac76543211 The problem with using regular paste wax is that you cannot paint over it. You have to either strip it or sand it off if you want to repaint a piece. You can paint right over the specialty waxes created for the chalk paints. Also the specialty waxes are less noxious.

    • @Ac76543211
      @Ac76543211 10 років тому +1

      That is good to know, expecially if there is a chance that you know you might want to repaint over it. I also agree that the smell is almost absent in the more expensive wax formulated for chalk paint.

    Hi Cherry. I use foam rollers too; but also the little angled brush from Home Depot. It is called the shortcut, I think. I love it because it has a small bendy handle that fits a small (woman's) hand and it has an angled cut and it is only $5. I have seen some how to videos using chalk paint where they apply the paint in sort of a cross hatch pattern; but I don't do that...I try for a smooth even coat.

  • @lisaklaczyk182

    Why would you wax before distressing. Seems like you would distress first, then wax.

    • @DecoratingMagic
      @DecoratingMagic  9 років тому +10

      +Lisa Klaczyk You can do it either way. I use the clear wax before I use the dark wax because the dark wax tends to "grab" the wood and make the piece look blotchy. I distress the piece BEFORE the dark wax because you can sand down to the raw wood in some cases, and the dark wax will make it not look like new wood.

    You can buff the wax to a high shine...I recommend using an electric buffer because it takes some major elbow grease. You can use a car buffer, or you can buy an attachment for your drill. Good luck! The high gloss look on mid century modern is a big trend right now.

    You can make your own chalk paint using a variety of ingredients to mix with latex paint. Baking soda. Plaster of Paris. Calcium carbonate which is actual chalk powder. I watch different reviews and it seems to work just fine. You can turn any latex paint into chalk paint.

    I just don't understand taking a beautiful piece of furniture, painting it to make it look like it's old and warn.

    I have just picked up a tin of this paint and the two waxes to have a go at upcycling a bookcase and a couple of other unremarkable pieces of furniture. Your vid is undoubtedly among the best on the 'tube on the subject and inspired me to try. I live in the UK so we can get the paint easily but as your other commentators have remarked, it ain't especially cheap. Everyone who knows says it goes a long way though, so you need to compare to how much it would cost to replace the furniture completely rather than with the cost of a one litre tin plus waxes. You also get the colour you want of course. I certainly agree the brushes are very pricey - I shall be using my own man-made fibre brushes. Keep the vids coming.

    chalk paint in australia is very expensive $60 but so nice to use i did do a dark piece of furniture and had to do 2 coats but turned out nice, i have found out it will not cover any dark wood in 1 coat i have tipped the can upside down , mixed very well but still needs 2 coats ....I loved your video you did a great job......Pauline x

    • @DecoratingMagic
      @DecoratingMagic  9 років тому +1

      Hi Pauline...I almost never get away with one coat; but you can make your own chalk paint. I use 1 cup flat paint, any color and mix it w3ith 3 tablespoons plaster of paris and 2 tablespoons of water. I shake the water and plaster of paris together first (in a glass jar) and then add the paint and shake. I store it in plastic containers because the paint dries like cement. Thank you for such a good video. You taught some details that the average video doesn't cover (such as painting, sanding, etc., with the grain of the wood). I get a lot of my projects at my local thrift store for cheap. I run across a lot of projects where someone has tried to do a project like this and failed miserably. Another thing I thought was great is you didn't instruct everyone to get that $35+ brush they're using for chock paint. I do believe in a good brush, but you can over-do it also money-wise. They have plenty of brushes that are reasonable in cost and a lot of brushes that cost way too much. If viewers follow your instructions - they will have a very good experience and finish a piece they will be proud of. Good job, and thank you again!
