    Ok this js THE BEST tutorial for chalk paint!!! I am refinishing an old kitchen sideboard into a bathroom vainty using black Annie Sloan chalk paint and I have watched countless videos and tried a lot of techniques but I am not satisfied with the results I am getting. I am definately trying the roller technique, which no one else talks about in their videos. Thanks a million ❤🎉

    Ive done a few chalk paint pieces in the past. They were LARGE, and I do prefer a smooth finish. In the middle of one right now and it's going horribly wrong, mostly due to heat. We're running highs of 104-109 right now which means it's already waaay hot by 10 am. I think I'll be moving operations inside (lol).
    I just have to say that this video is more appreciated than you know!! So very helpful. Maybe chalk painting isnt as popular as it once was just a few years ago, but there are times when it is the only worthwhile solution, which is where I am right now. Bless you for sharing so much information.

    I just chalk painted my first piece of furniture, a large dresser. I used a micro roller because I had veneer damage to repair prior, I had to prime first. The primer showed those lines and brush marks you mentioned. So I lightly sanded and then roller the 2nd coat of primer. That's why I was afraid of brushing the paint. I did do thin coats but I can see those lines again in just a few places. So I'm going to apply a 3rd coat of paint using the same brush you used. I didn't use with primer because I was afraid of ruining the brush especially if the primer dried on it. Now my dresser is all color. I was going to add a decoupage but it was far too large and didn't want to cut all that off and waste it. ** So what would look nice over a dark blue grayish teal color? This is antique dresser older than me, 59 but doesn't have any appliques. I want to some flare and male it look unique. Any suggestions other than knobs and pulls? I don't want distress or make it look old again. Add some silver guilding creme to the edged? OR can add a lighter color to the middle section of drawers so if I find a new decoupage I could incorporate it? Or just it over the blue paint and try to blend a little bit of.the edges to draw interest to the picture? I'm lost at this point. I had originally left the drawers just primed but chose to paint since I didn't have anything to dress it up. I do have some Behr clear wax. Jus5 add that and leave as is? I have 2 other dresser and a 4 poster bed to paint as well. Btw,as you can tell I love challenge in anything I do on first try of whatever I'm learning. Lol I'm using Modern Masters warm silver on the bed, added appliques to it since it already had a little. If all this isn't enough? I'm venetian plastering my livingroom and adding plaster raised stenciling too. I've learned to mill grains and make my breads from scratch, have been growing near all my food for a decade. I've learned to add wood decorative trims to my kitchen cabinets after stripping and staining 32 cabinets over the winter. After the venetian plaster I'm putting thin brick around 4 archways throughout my house. And I'm making a valance and curtains for a 144" window which I've never sewn anything before. Yea I'm crazy. I'm loving retirement and learning so much I never had the time to learn. So far really enjoying all of this . I wonder if anyone else is doing any of these things? Please share if you are. Fun 😁

I am currently painting a Mission style dresser and matching mirror I purchased from a consignment shop and I was feeling frustrated that my finish wasn't "perfect"....I also was unaware that if you lightly sand and then wipe away dust, the waxing will take away signs of sanding. • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  Рік тому

      Yes, you can sand to smooth it out if you like, dust off the paint dust and then apply wax. If you are using a water based sealer rather the. Wax, depending on the sealer, and if you have dark paint colour like black, it might look a little “dusty” when dry. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.

    Excellent video for all the basics! Love the comparison between roller and brush and if you had added the sprayer comparison, would have been awesome. I found the type of brush really makes a difference with how the chalk paint goes on to the surface. The dresser is possibly two small to support the three current colors. I would either paint the top if it doesn’t have an interesting pattern as the drawer fronts do, or the drawers to give the piece a more cohesive look.

    I had major problems using chalk paint. Had a unit with drawers and cupboards that only had about a mm clearence when closing. After 2 coats of chalk paint neither the cupboards or drawers would close. Can't say I'm a fan of chalk paint, would rather see the natural beauty of the wood.

    Great for starting to do chalkpainting..You explain it all very well.My hardware on my dresser cannot be removed!!The back of them is a round circle??Can I just paint over them and later distress?Painting around all t by e little crevices and edges from the hardware would be tedious..😊

      Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan does stick to metal so Yes you can paint the hardware and distress it afterwards, great idea!

    Nice work! Love your easy to follow steps. Just a question, can I use beeswax as a coat finish?

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  3 роки тому

      Hi Anna, some paint companies do make a beeswax sealer instead of a mixed wax like the Annie Sloan one. I usually try to stick with the wax that the paint manufacturer recommends for their product because you know they have tested for compatibility. Since every brand of paint is different I would check with the manufacturer of the paint you are using to see what they suggest. Or at the very least do a sample board / test patch to see if you like the results. Thanks for watching!

    Great video! Do you cover your rollers during layers to keep them from drying or do you use new rollers each time??

      Great question! I definitely reuse the rollers, you can wrap them in a plastic bag or damp cloth between layers.

    What if you use the heavy nap roller to get paint down then finish with the fine roller for smooth finish? Also using Floetrol with latex paints will level it out.

      Good question, I have not tried the two roller method, might work. Thanks for the tip using Floetrol with latex paint, I'm using Chalk Paint so I'm not sure it it work the same. Thanks for watching.

    I'm painting a table. It was black and I'm using RustOleum cream chalk paint. I used a foam roller and even if I applied 4 coats, I can see some strokes. Do I need to sand, and then apply another coat? I'm not planning to use wax, but varnish. Do you think that will give an even look?

    Hi Deanna, I need a little guidance. I have 3 pieces of furniture that have natural stain on them. I started with the nightstand and cleaned it with Mean Green. I sanded it a bit and then painted it with white chalk paint. I did 3 coats. I wanted it to have a little shine, so the Lowes Rep suggested I go over it with Polyacrylic Clear. The piece came out with a slight yellow color and I don't like it. What should I have done differently and how do I fix it?

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Karie, the slight yellow could be undertones from the paint or wood. Sometimes sealers cause the paint colours to “pop out” I’ve had this before. It could also be the colour of the sealer. Before trying something else on your furniture I’d do a couple tests on a scrap piece of wood. Follow the same steps on the wood that you did on your furniture piece and then test some options... paint another layer and use a different sealer, you could try a white wash overtop of the sealer or a white wax. I’d start there and see what happens. I know it’s a lot of work to redo something, I’ve been there before! Hope you find a look you’re happy with.

    I have a question. I chalk painted a table, and I used wax with a little black tint to highlight the curves and lines. When I put clear wax over it, and the black color faded a lot and bled. Should I have used chalk paint in the crevices and then waxed, or maybe not clear waxed over it all? Is it possible to put too much wax on? Thank you! I love your videos over anyone else's on youtube. Superb talent and a wonderful personality!

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  2 роки тому

      Hello! Good questions. In my experience applying clear wax over top of black wax the does remove some of the black because they mix on the surface rather than the clear sitting on top of the black. You can use paint in the crevices or do not apply clear over the black. Especially if you are using the same wax as I did in this video because it does contain a bit of solvent so it “melts” into the existing wax. At this point you can add some more black wax on top and see if that gives you the look you like. I would try using a small brush to try and press it into the details you want to highlight and then wipe the raised parts with a cloth to remove the excess. Yes it is possible to put too much wax and then it stays sticky feeling, so I like to wipe right away to remove the excess. generally speaking, no one will be touching right in the crevices so you can get away with leaving it a little heavier there for the look. I hope this makes sense! Thanks for watching.

    • @dawnyeager8525
      @dawnyeager8525 2 роки тому

      @@DIYDEANNA Yes it does! Thank you! The clear surely melted into the black wax giving it a blurred appearance and took away the look of the defined designs and crevices. Live and learn! Thanks for the prompt answer! :)

    Paint the drawers please. I often love mixing the look of wood and paint textures on the one piece but I actually don’t like the colour of this timber against the colour of the paint. I look forward to seeing your finished dresser.
