I checked out your video and others before starting my first chalk paint project. I learned a lot! Just for anyone else who, like me, is thinking of their first go at this I thought I would advise a few things. First, anyone who is doing these videos has done it before so you won't have the same experience, so don't expect it to be so easy. I would not use a bristle brush, I started with one and didn't like it. Little bristles got into the paint and it didn't feel natural in my hand. I switched to good quality foam brushes and loved those. Foam rollers would also probably be good for bigger pieces. I would prime my piece first. Oh man do I wish I had done that it would have saved me so much work. It took four coats of the chalk paint to fully cover the dark wood on my bookcase, and yes I used good quality paint. Go with the grain or at least stay in a pattern, it will look so much better. Be prepared to sand a little in between coats because drips will happen and in places you wouldn't expect because of the thickness of the paint. I liked the final project but again it wasn't as easy as experienced youtubers would have you believe. Bring your patience. Good luck.
@croberts/09 thank you very much for the tips you shared with us. Vi don't t now how many times I followed a video, and just give up on my project because it was far from the UA-camr result. It's all about experience and the real tips.
I wasn't looking for this, it was a random click that got me here. But since I watched the video, let me say that you are very clear and thorough in your instructions that if I wanted to chalk paint ,I could start today . You are a very good teacher.
I just got a beat up wooden table and I want to paint it. This will be my first time so I came to UA-cam and found your video. Let me same thank you this video is so helpful.
I just found your channel when searching for DIY chalk paint for beginners. Fantastic video! I feel confident I could do this, and do it well with your instructions. I also appreciate examples of what not to do, and that there was no annoying background music. Thank you!
I just really liked yr video.... because it was the best video on UA-cam for me because it was without all the fanfare that 99% of others do. I also liked how you parched-up all the holes and chipped off wooden corners. This is professional. You are a confidence booster.
The Chalk paint brand called "FARMHOUSE Paint" Has the Primer and Sealer in their paint. No preparation No topcoat/ sealer REQUIRED! Is my go to chalk paint! It's the best
thank you for this video ... what i was wondering : when and/or why should one use chalkpaint? What are it's qualities or advantages over acryl or alkyd paints?
I was wondering the same thing. I keep coming across chalk paint tutorials, so I figured if I watched an intro-level one it would give me a sense of what's great about it to justify what seems to be quite a few downsides compared to other paints. At this point I can't imagine anything justifying having to wait for weeks for the furniture to be usable, but maybe I'm missing something.
I sand my furniture a bit and add that sanded off wood to the pieces missing. That’s more for staining,it remains the same colour when staining. Little tip if your doing a wood and paint piece.
Kwikwood sets up fast. Never mix the entire tube because it will harden before you can use it. I slice off about 1/4" mix it and fill what I can and then do it again. There is a dark layer over a light center... You want to slice off a piece and work the two colors together completely. If the area is large and deep you can do it in layers and use a bit thicker of a slice. It is a pain to get off of your hands but it won't work with gloves (it sticks to them). Kwikwood is the best wood filler out there! I love it!
I've had a container of wax for months and haven't been sure how to use it until this. THANK you. I painted the vanity in my camper and thought I made a mistake. It just looks...not the way I wanted.
Hi! Was having trouble with wax looking streaky on chalk paint and Annie Sloan video suggests wiping off the excess then letting it dry overnight before buffing. Do you have good luck buffing right away?
Just bought a set if old type pine bedroom furniture and want to try and chalk paint it to a light colour. I live in Spain and hopefully I can find the correct paint and primers. Loved your video and your teaching method was easy to understand. I can do this, wish me luck ❤️
Your go-to get a much smoother finish when using a soft roller and always keep a mister spray bottle of water 💦. It helps your paint to level out smoother when it gets to dry too quickly.
Thank you so much for making this brilliant video tutorial. I had no idea that wax is used to seal in chalk paint, in fact I just painted the inside of the drawers that go in my little bedside tables with pink chalk paint and I was wondering how to seal it, so I'm very glad that I saw your video. Thanks for all the tips as well, like using an old t shirt to apply the wax.
I am very glad I found your video. I am subscribing to your channel. I have a question; I just chalk painted and waxed my bathroom cabinets two days ago. do you recommend I do a topcoat with polyurethane as well? Thank you in advance!
Great Info. Beautiful project. Have never seen the filler you use in HI for wood. Will check into it. A great filler for flat surfaces is Abatron Wood Epox. A little costly but worth every penny. I use BIN a lot. Great for what you are doing. Bin is the same as your go to clear sealer which you like. If people want a water based primer and they desire a dark finish such as in your video, try grey 123 or grey gripper. Faux Effect has one of the best primers I have ever used for decorative paint jobs called Aqua Bond. Keep posting as you are a great teacher. Respects
Thank you very for sharing your expertise. i appreciate all of the extra tips you added in your video. I have watched quite a few of these kinds of videos recently, and I have to say you gave a lot of good extra advice I have not heard in any of the other videos, Again, thank you very much!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This video gave me more information than any other one I have watched before. What profit margarine should you try to get for your furniture? If you don’t mind sharing. But if you don’t want to, I understand. As you can tell I am a real beginner. Thanks again!!!
That all depends on you and your area. Obviously you want to at least get back your cost as well as pay for your time. How much is your time worth? How good is your work? As you get better you can charge more for your work.
I just now discovered you! I know how to paint furnitur, but was curious to see what you taught people. I am Extremely impressed!!!! So you now have another subscriber & I will definitely tell people that need the basics & more to watch your video's & give you a follow! Thanks for fully doing what you said you were going to do!!!!!
Hi, I really enjoyed your video. I'm contemplating changing my whole living room look from my dark Tommy Bahama furniture to a more light chalk paint Coastal nautical theme. I was wondering what steps I need to take with this dark furniture before I chalk paint. Looking forward to getting started.
Do you have any videos on how to paint multi colors on a coffee table. You know how those are really in style with the turquoise and browns and different colors? Thank you for this video I've been frustrated. Now I know why! I wasn't doing anything right
My problems are 1. I live in Italy and the wardrodes I have are very very old, laminated, yet in very solid condition! Dark colors and not of any value to resale! Thank you for your video's! I desire to go for a Scandinavian style light to white or bleached look. I will likely used a side panel and try the bleach look first (white wash look?) I shall have a look through your video's to see if I can locate those applications.
Chalk paint may also be an option. I'm going to use it to paint my bedroom set. I've watched videos and it seems easier to use than other types of paint.
Learning the journey of diy-furniture.. how do you prepare the amount of paint ? I mean how do you manage if the mixed paint gets over before covering the entire furniture. Because getting the same shade again by mixing colours is difficult isn’t it
This was extremely helpful. I live In Arizona and I want to paint my front door with blush pink chalk paint by rest oleum. What brush should I use? Should I still spray it down with water? How long should I wait to do a second coat?
It's also in dark green, but it looked lighter because it's the first coat of paint. You can find the full detail in this blog post: arayofsunlight.com/dark-green-chalk-painted-dresser/
Thank youuu, the best explanation I've found yet. I have a question tho, I'm going to paint my bedroom door with rust-oleum chalk paint, but like, I'll obviously be using it quite a lot, especially considering I have three cats and a dog who love to scratch it to get out haha, I was thinking maybe during the 3 weeks or so that the wax is curing and whatever, maybe I could like wrap it in plastic or something? would that not work? and do you have another alternative I could use that doesnt involve sleeping without a door for almost a month?:( oh and one last question, how do I keep it clean after its done? can it be water resistant after waxed?
the dresser looks very nice. it looks like you added a bit of red paint to what appears to be green paint. since red and green are complementary colors, each can be used in small amounts in order to make a shade of the other color. is that what you did? thanks for your patience in always answering questions.

Make sure you stir very very well, no shaking. And then the way you apply the topcoat can leave bubbles and streaks. The best looking way to apply topcoat is to spray it on.
Just ordered the color Crinoline to paint my kitchen door...does one have to wet the brush first? I heard that mentioned somewhere else... thank you for the informative and concise instructions!

Do I wax AND put verathane to seal?
I’m definitely going to prime first.
I just waxed and it came out fine.@@annmcintosh4524
When you said you should prime first, what product do you use to prime? Kilz?
I WISH I had primed, I didn’t but I probably would have used kilz because I see other UA-camrs using it.
As a beginner painter it was very informative, thank you so much!

oh my word I have this exact dresser...handles and all! now I can't wait to refinish it!
Structurally sound, vintage waterfall furniture like this dresser is becoming rarer and more valuable. I hope you refinished instead of painting :/
