One thing to know about a Rush “solo” is that even when he’s playing keys, there’s always a point where Geddy jumps back on bass so he and Alex can get out front and jam like best buds. It’s definitely a repeated feature, and Geddy is usually shredding up some nasty counterpoint to whatever Alex is doing. Loving it, CB!
Two things you can always count on with Rush. First, the lyrics always make your brain hurt from all the thinkin'. And second...in the middle of the song they all do their solo's together...and it sounds amazing!
Bear in mind l, Geddy was playing bass, singing complicated lyrics, as well as playing keys and pedals. He looks like a wizard, because he is one! Just like Alex and Neil. Best band ever.
Me and my bros/bandmates had a Rush tribute band in the early 90's , and we called Geddy "Mr. Beckaduh" because of the sweet double finger picking "Becka-duh, Becka-duh". Good times man. Love your channel as always, I think we all wish you did more though!
For some reason I've never fully understood, this album (Power Windows) has always been one of my top Rush albums. I never was a huge 80s music fan (tho I do love a lot of eclectic bands from that era), but the way they altered the classic "Rush" sound enough to be noticeably "80s" while still holding on to their musical roots always amazed me. Not to mention some of the best riffs, lyrics and themes are present on Power Windows. It was also one of my VERY first compact discs (relatively new music format in 1985) so maybe that influenced me as well?
The version from the live video show of hands is amazing and has a really cool intro, I actually wore out my CD from that concert every single song is amazing!!!
1st time listener, and I agree with EVERYTHING you've said, including the stuff about big pharma. I'm not a bass player, so I'll take your word on that 😊 Rush has been my favorite band since the late '70s, keep it up! You should also check out UFO, Supertramp, and Electric Light Orchestra!
I've always loved John Wetton's bass tone, especially during his King Crimson days. It has a very distinct deep guttural roar, with it's tonal range probably best showcased in Starless.
I really love Wettons bass playing on the three King Crimson albums he's on. I'm pretty sure he used a fuzz to get some of his sounds. My favorites with him are Fracture and One More Red Nightmare. His bass lines during the instrumental sections are very melodic and borderline hypnotizing. Starless is great, too, especially the power with which he plays in the closing minutes.
I believe the riff you’re referring to is “Marathon.” That song is also from Power Windows with “The Big Money.” It’s in B as well, and Geddy worked out on a pentatonic groove throughout the verses. On this album, he played a Wal Mk-I with Rotosounds. Handmade basses from England, pretty rare to find these days and high dollar. But there’s a huge chance you can point to most any ‘80s rock song and find a Wal bass. Dire Straits is a good example. He was also running through an Ashley amp (not sure the model). He worked with this setup from 1985 to 1992.
Great reaction! Don't forget...Geddy is singing while playing those awesome riffs. Sometimes, he's playing keys with his feet while singing and playing bass. It's mine blowing to me
Welcome to the Wal Mk1 era of Rush. Geddy loves his "string-pong" of bouncing across 1-5-7 patterns on two strings. The Wal bass just made it slap harder than anything. He didn't need to roll off the neck pickup , the Wal has the ability to get that tone with both PUPs on 10. Active electronics, push/pull EQ, and frequency scoops to drop mid-ranges. Plus light gauge strings. .35-90s, piano wound for even more pop.
That opening blast by Alex is the best welcome to a live gig I can remember! Even better that they filmed the concert I heard it for the first time, and released that same gig on VHS.
Half, if not more, of the tone in Geddy’s bass comes from Geddy, and the way ye plays. Just like David Gilmour, or Jeff Beck. Geddy plucks his strings VERY hard. Much of his tone comes from himself, not his gear.
you got a good ear brother. as a fellow low ender, i appreciate that. and you are listening to probably the best rock low ender ever. even if it’s high end sometimes. i think the song your referring to this sounding similar to is, MARATHON. great channel. keep it up
As far as live shows this was probably one of my favorite eras because they just had something nobody else had. Plus I was a kid in my twenties just absolutely soaking these guys up they were so unique. Ended up following them hardcore all the way through the end. Countless shows and live was always just such a treat. Never disappointing. You got your bang for the buck no matter what the ticket price was. And actually it was always very reasonable for the times. They never got greedy. I remember when their first 3 hours set started with no opening act that ticket was 80 bucks. At the time the stones and Madonna were charging $300 for nosebleed
Thanks for a great review. It’s always extra special to have a musician like yourself critique a song as you have a different perspective. Love the song. Love the band. Love the review. Thanks again!
One of the most underrated Rush song. This was new sound at the time but when you listen it’s literally a step up in the complexity of the song the way it was put together. Great reaction Rush forever ❤
He played a similar line in the song 'Marathon' from the same album which I believe you have reviewed. Wish i could jam with you. So, please accept my drumming admiration from afar - wherever you are! Love your take and seamless ability to pick up his lines as quickly as you do. At this time, he was playing a 'Wal' bass.
A couple other great Geddy bass songs from the same era are Marathon (from Power Windows) and Turn The Page (from Hold Your Fire.) Geddy's tone was very punchy and funky. Lots of people have already mention the Wal basses he's playing. And check out the live album A Show Of Hands that was recorded in mostly 1988 with a couple of songs recorded in 1986. There is a DVD of the album, too, recorded in Birmingham, U.K. in 1998 where we we to get Geddy play those parts, and sing. So awesome.
Love your reactions. Your ability to pick up your bass and show us what you are talking about is killer. There are so, so many great Rush songs, but listening to 2112 is what made me a fan for life! The Clockwork Angels album, sadly their last, might be my favorite. ❤️ from Florida!
Right on ! You should check out Black Sabbath - After Forever (1971) the guitarist Tony Iommi’s two middle finger tips were cut off accidently from work but he created roots of Rock and Metal genre from Jazz Rock to Doom Metal. This song is Doom Metal style. Great band ! (Some people say therye evil, no its the other way around).
Geddy had became close friends with monster bassist Jeff Berlin, and Jeff’s influence is heard on this record. Plus, Geddy switched over to Wal basses at this time, and I thought the Wal sounded incredible.
Someone else can comment on whether Geddy played this particular riff on another song, but he was using a Wal bass for the Power Windows album and it's got a distinct, punchy pop that's so different from the Fender/Rickenbacker (while still being entirely Geddy's sound). I can't remember if you've reacted to another Rush song that used the Wal - if you have, you may be recognizing the specific bass tone rather than the riff.
The Necromancer is a must. It's a long one but I think you will love it and you won't be able to help yourself and pick up your bass. My favorite part of you videos. Don't stop brother.
The other song is Marathon and/or Territories which is on the same record (Power windows). Speaking of which, your nest reaction should be Middletown dreams on that same record !! Thank you bro!
Thanks for the awesome reaction, but those bass lines!! You want more of that, look for the Clockwork Angels album and click on Headlong Flight (if you haven't yet). You'll love it.
YYZ? I am not ashamed to say that mid rush and on is my favorite. Grace Under Pressure and after. Hold Your Fire is probably my favorite album. But, my favorite Rush song is still The Camera Eye. if you want to see 10 minutes pass in the blink of an eye, watch still kickings fan version of that song. Also all of their other videos. They are awesome.
Sometimes pushing people around Sometimes pulling out the rug Sometimes pushing all the buttons Sometimes pulling out the plug So cool so true…🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🥁🎹🎤
HI CBR!!! Glad your still doing your thing. I was hoping to watch you check out Neil Peart playing in the Buddie Rich tribute concert.....Glad to see any RUSH though...I'll keep sending you the Buddie Rich request and pray that you will check it out . I promise you will like it..God bless you and yours.
Thanks for doing this song. This is a great song from a great album. Yes, da bass rocks! Could the riff be similar to one from the Show Don’t Tell” reaction?
You know, you could still be going crazy (or have already arrived at that particular destination), notwithstanding whether you were correct about Geddy's re-use of a base line (about which I am confident you were, indeed, correct!).
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 big shout out to you first time on your reaction Channel first Getty's bass is a Rickenbacker he styled his music and the bass guitar itself from the late bass guitarist of yes second I am 67 years old I've listened to tons of music I dare say as good a three-piece ensemble as there is in any genre of anytime you have done very deep into a rabbit hole my brother hollaback
🤗 Thank you, thank you, thank you for not doing the annoying & very distracting video and for just 😍 reacting to the actual song, 🤭 the way we all did! 🥰🐰 PS: 😑 Still waiting in the wings to Riot if we don't get 'YYZ Live in Rio' reaction soon! 😒 Im serious yo......

Possibly Marathon, which is really nice and funky driving bass line, also form Power Windows. Although not the same, there is a repeated section that is similar in its level of rockin' funkiness!
PS - Important to remember that, certainly by this point in their careers (1985), Neil and the boys didn't preach with their lyrics. They weren't trying to make political statements so much as simply seeking to tell a story or express an idea that would have come to Neil. Put another way, the three of them were too intelligent and experienced in life, music, and business, to have clung to any specific ideology or all-encompassing theory. Neil would have just had a thought come to him about how - sometimes, in certain situations - big companies try to assert control over things, etc. So, please don't read too much into it.
Your ability to pick up the bass and casually play a Rush bass line from ear will never not amaze me.
Seriously. He has an amazing ear for picking up the nuances...
Love that as well. Love someone who can REALLY appreciate who Geddy Lee really is. He knows....
🤯 Riiiiiight?!? 🥰🐰

that's one of my favorite moments to look for when watching concert videos. :)
Geddy always said when it came time for the guitar solo is when I had to get busy.
Two things you can always count on with Rush. First, the lyrics always make your brain hurt from all the thinkin'. And second...in the middle of the song they all do their solo's together...and it sounds amazing!

So glad you touched on the lyrics. The Professor gave another thesis presentation set to a dozen different time signatures!
One of my favorite Alex Lifeson solos… Geddy is non stop in this song, he and Neil arguably the best rhythm section in rock and roll
Whose arguing. Lol
Rush in Rio is a great version
Hey Church Boy, it's quite possible Geddy would agree to an interview with you - he's a super nice guy. I'd really love to see you talk shop with him.
Bass used on this: WAL MK-I bass strung with Rotosound Funkmaster 66.
Light gauge strings too
Me and my bros/bandmates had a Rush tribute band in the early 90's , and we called Geddy "Mr. Beckaduh" because of the sweet double finger picking "Becka-duh, Becka-duh". Good times man. Love your channel as always, I think we all wish you did more though!
Geddy's playing a lacquered Wahl bass, hand-built english guitar company. There's a similar bright 'twang ' on 'Territories ',from the same album
Wal
@@deanhomeinspectionservices523 congratulations, you are indeed the king of the internets...
Never mistake a wal bass tone, so unique
Maybe Marathon a little bit?
It might be Territories you heard a similar bass riff from Geddy. It’s on the same album. I think he used the Wal bass during recording. Cheers!
Power Windows was during his Wal phase, but I believe Geddy used a Stienberger on this track.
For some reason I've never fully understood, this album (Power Windows) has always been one of my top Rush albums. Manhattan Project is an amazing ballad piece and Territories is as relevant today as in 1985.
Boom!! Hell yeah!! Another Rush reaction from Church Boy!! I’m here for it!! 🔥 (Commenting before the song even starts.)
The version from the live video show of hands is amazing and has a really cool intro, I actually wore out my CD from that concert every single song is amazing!!!

That's right. He picked up his bass to jam along with that too.
Great reaction! Don't forget...Geddy is singing while playing those awesome riffs. Sometimes, he's playing keys with his feet while singing and playing bass. It's mine blowing to me
AND, it's not like Rush has the easiest lyrics to remember, let alone to sing! Incredible!!
I think you are referring to Territories, when you're talking about Geddy's thumping the bass.
Am I right?
Welcome to the Wal Mk1 era of Rush. Geddy loves his "string-pong" of bouncing across 1-5-7 patterns on two strings. The Wal bass just made it slap harder than anything. He didn't need to roll off the neck pickup , the Wal has the ability to get that tone with both PUPs on 10. Active electronics, push/pull EQ, and frequency scoops to drop mid-ranges. You should get yourself a copy of Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass.
Agree, and we should chip in to help him get it. 😀
Big money got no soul- powerful!!!!
Geddy used that riff in the song Marathon
That’s what I was thinking as well.
You may be thinking Marathon on the bass part. I saw this tour and it was an amazing show! Loving your journey brother
I believe you are correct sir!! 🙌
How awesome that you attended this tour.. I was a wee 6th grader back then, yet to have discovered this legendary band.

Hey Church thanks for all you do with your reactions, especially when it comes to my favorite band of all time. Nice reaction.

I was at that concert in Birmingham, that became most of the 'A Show of Hands' VHS. The boys played a blinder that night. I'll take it to my grave 👍
Territories or Marathon from the same album Power Windows have similar riffs.

War in paradise, biblical.
Love your reactions man! If you liked this one you'll definitely enjoy "Turn The Page", another killer bass line from Geddy.

Could the song be ''Show Don't Tell''?
Oooo, yes perhaps! That opening riff! I was rackin’ my brain, but I think you may have nailed it. 👍 Let’s see what others think…
Another commenter suggested “Marathon”, which I believe is the actual correct answer after all. (That baseline during the verses.)
@@johnanderson290 Haha! Nice one. 'Marathon' sounds good to me!!

I believe in the studio he records with his Jazz bass.
I think it was the song “Marathon” from the same album
I really enjoy your videos... I think you would like a band called Primus, maybe "Jerry was a racecar driver "😊
Thanks for the awesome reaction, but those bass lines!! You want more of that, look for the Clockwork Angels album and click on Headlong Flight (if you haven't yet). You'll love it.
The verse bassline is pretty similar to turn the page but a lot of the basslines on power windows and hold your fire all kind of have the same vibe.
You're talking about Marathon, it's from the same album and I was the one who made the recommendation for that song! Great reaction man!

Watch the video - early to mid 80's Rush was a radio-friendly powerhouse - nobody packed more into a 4 min. song - brilliant songwriting/performance -
