The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive [1]", written by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road & Track magazine. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive Modern Safety Vehicles (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour (80 km/h) impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some.[2]
Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart made several attempts to contact Foster during the recording of Moving Pictures but Road & Track did not have an up-to-date address and Rush were forced to settle for a brief "inspired by" note in the lyric sheet mentioning the story. In July 2007, Foster and Peart finally made contact with each other.[3] Foster later posted on his website an account of their journey by motorcycle through the backwoods of West Virginia between stops on Rush's 2007 Snakes & Arrows Tour.

Sorry, not me. Cool little story, yeah. But due to the Story-telling nature, it just rambles and repeats too much, once you've become familiar with it. It just doesn't have much musical interest for me, compared to many other RUSH songs. It's OK, just kinda bores me. No biggie.

I can’t rank Rush songs, due to the vast discography that ever changes. Depends on the mood for me. Which what makes Rush so great. They have a song for so many moods.
Personally love this song for the storytelling, but I love Rush in general.

One of my favorite aspects of Geddy's playing on this song is his brilliant use of muted and sustained punches (synced with Neil's bass drum/crash cymbal) underneath Alex's harmonic showcase. Juicy AF every damn time.

When I was in film school in the early 80's, I wrote a script for a short film based on this song. Everyone loved my script but couldn't get any student grants or funding to pursue it.
A futuristic film set in an age when combustion engine were outlawed. My young protagonist would hop a train(electric) to the country outside the city limits to visit his old uncle. In the barn his uncle had kept, restored an old muscle car, a Red Barchetta. When his uncle dies because of gov't red tape, our hero takes the car and drives it into the city and creates a headache for the gov't by showing the population of what their lives could be...and the future police in their giant hovercraft(air cars) chase him. They lose him when their hovercraft are too large to fit on a bridge leading out to the country... so he can bury his grandfather.

  • @mikeresendez5151
    @mikeresendez5151 16 днів тому +2

Basically in a nutshell, it's the future and cars are OUTLAWED. His uncle keeps an old FERRARI that he used to enjoy driving in immaculate shape for his nephew to drive. He goes for a spin and the "gleaming alloy air-car" (the cops) pursue him, he loses them on the way back...❤

You will love exploring this period of Rush and earlier. Red Barchetta is one of my favorites. Great story telling by Neil. Though it's a long song, "2112" is what put them on the map and gave them their creative freedom. It's 20 minutes, but worth it. For a shorter classic Rush song, you can't go wrong with "The Trees".

Great reaction Church Boy!! Not French, but Italian - often attributed to the '48 Ferrari 166MM, but Barchetta is a term used for a two-seat car without any kind of roof (not a convertible, but no roof...period)
Rush members, rarely, if ever, over play in a song (IMHO) - sure they can go nuts, now and again, but when they do, it's ALWAYS in service of the song! When Alex needs to shred, he'll shred. When Geddy needs a crazy bass run, he'll do it. When Neil has to play every tom he has - it will be there - but it's all to fill the spaces as required.
    Such a great song. Cheers.

This song shows their genius in using odd time signatures. The guitar solo shifts to 7/4 which is cool, but when they come out the the solo they play an instrumental riff they’ve repeated before. This riff had always been in 4/4, but after the solo, they drop a full beat off every second measure - one bar of 4/4 and one of 3/4. They essentially stay in 7/4 after the solo. This gives the impression of speeding up, without actually increasing tempo, right as they go into the third verse - the chase scene! Listen to that again. It’s just subtly masterful. Cheers!

Yeah, that Monte Carlo SS in black with red pin stripes was a beast. My first car came in 1984/1985. I lusted after the '69-'73 mustangs but wound up with a '75 Camaro instead.
It was canary yellow with a stock 328. I had a 350 with a 4-bolt main from a totaled Chevy truck installed, to which was added headers and a shift kit. I had it painted midnight blue and topped it off with Craiger SST dish mag wheels.
Much Rush was played in that vehicle...

Great reaction, bro… and loved the story. It’s not really a muscle car, but my dream car is an Aston Martin DB5… the Professor had one in his collection that he called the Silver Surfers.
Again, and especially since you were talking about working a big ol’ V8, try Headlong Flight off Clockwork Angels… it’s the guys firing on all 8 and pushing it. I’d roll with the studio version for a first listen because the production is AMAZING.
Also I suggested once before The Main Monkey Business… it’s the instrumental that was up for a Grammy but lost to Springsteen. I know you like the Boss, but there’s no justice with that decision. 😂

The thing with understanding Rush songs is to live in the story. Their musical talent along with the lyrics provides synergistic imagery in ones thoughts that enables you to experience the concept of the song. Try not to focus on a guitar solo, or drum parts, or bass playing. Yes, their talent is legendary and an inspiration, but focusing on just that and you miss out on Rush music as a whole.
In this song, the name of the car does not matter. Picture what they are saying. It is a time where motor cars are outlawed. The society is utopian and controlled which is why the young man must sneak through the fences to visit his uncle in the country. His uncles is obviously a non conformist which is why he is outside the fence. When he sees his uncle, they uncover the old car that is kept hidden due to the motor laws. The take it out for a drive and picture in your mind riding in the country air with the wind in your face and the thrill of breaking the law and riding in the forbidden car. Then the motor patrol comes after them, but they escape and hide the car again in the barn. After, they sit around the fire reminiscing of the old days.
Understand the story and what is being portrayed and how the music enhances the story will give you an even greater appreciation of Rush.

Although Rush forged their own path musically, they followed the fashion of the day leading to some questionable choices. Neil has a bowtie on, while Alex and Geddy are wearing 1981 skinny ties. A barchetta is an Italian sports car which has no roof. The word is Italian for 'little boat'.

Thanks for another great Rush reaction. I really enjoyed your story, which brought back memories of being a young man and my dream car. For me it was a 1972 Corvette Stingray with a 427 4 speed. I was able to buy that car and had it for 8 years. I still love that car. My Dad had a 84 Grand Prix with t-tops. He thought it was pretty cool.
Red Barchetta is often lost amongst the other hits on Moving Pictures. I highly recommend listening to the studio recording which really brings out the nuance in Neil's playing, as well as Alex and Geddy. Terry Brown was an amazing producer, and the sound reproduction on Moving Pictures, and Permanent Waves is astounding.

Church, I always look forward to your review and insight into the musical structure. It's cool to see you pick up your base and mimic the sound. BTW, your bass has great tone also! 😉

It's a 3 piece band. The singer (Geddy Lee) plays bass and keys. The drummer (Neil Peart - RIP) wrote the majority of the lyrics to their songs, and Alex Lifeson is a phenomenal guitarist. Thank you for the review gents.

    Churchboy,
Barchetta would be an Italian car if it were real, but it's a made-up name.
"Muscle Cars" ended in 1973 when the government changed the rules for engines as a result of the oil embargo. There were horrible gas shortages here in America.
Compression ratios went from 11:1 to 8:1, maybe 9:1. As a result horsepower output in most engines was cut in half.
Performance in American cars didn't really recover until technology (fuel injection and spark controlled by microprocessors) rescued the horrible performance numbers in about 1997.
My dad had a 1985 Monte Carlo. It wasn't an "SS', but I loved that car because it was beautiful.
As a builder/owner of several "Muscle Cars" (1967 442, 1968 Hurst Olds) I promise you if you ride in a Monte Carlo from the late 1960's and compare that with a 1986 Monte Carlo, you'll choose the 60's version!
    P.K.

Barchetta is actually pronounced barketta - italian for little boat. It is a car with no roof - and the actual car that Neil wronte this song is a 1948 Ferrari 166 MM . While Neil built up an impressive car collecton - recenly sold at auction - most of his cars were silver and he never owned a red Ferrari - but he did say in a few interviews that the 48 166MM was his grail car.

Barchetta (Italian pronunciation: [barˈketta]) is an Italian word commonly translated into English as "little boat". The term originally referred to a small skiff used for recreational purposes. It is also applied to some items of clothing, as well as being used in automobile styling, where it describes a class of open-top, two-seat sports cars.
When applied to an automobile, barchetta describes a small car that is open-topped, without provision of a removable or foldable top for weather protection. Instead of a full windshield, the barchetta has a low-rise transparent wind deflector that may be a single full width piece, be divided into two sections, or omitted entirely. With an emphasis on performance, unnecessary trim and equipment is kept to a minimum.
The barchetta has full-width enveloping bodywork, in contrast to an early spider corsa, which may have cycle or wing fenders. Later (non-corsa) spiders added more heavily padded seats, interior carpeting and a full windshield, items not found in the more spartan barchette. Some later cars still called barchette were more well-appointed, following the trend of the later spiders and convertibles.
The first car to be called a barchetta was a Ferrari 166 MM shown at the 1948 Turin Auto Show.

This is my top 3 song ever! I've played it probably 200 times. Not because I can. But Neil is my idol. Been listening since 1976. Been playing along in my attempt to become a drummer, since 77. Figuring if I can somehow even reach the point of playing his stuff sloppy. I would get better. Yes, he was my drum teacher. Forever grateful for the experience.
    Love what you do brother!
The Garden.... Last song on last album made by Rush, b4 Neil's death.
I'm not going to tell you about it. I want to see your emotions while listening.
    Take care and God bless!!

Best US muscle car has to be the AC Cobra 427 big block V8 as featured in the recent film Le Mans 66 aka Ford v Ferrari. When they took it over for the Le Mans race in 1966 the newly finished M1 motorway in the UK was just built and they were given permission to test the race car on it which reached a recorded speed of 185mph which lead to the UK introducing a maximum speed limit of 70mph which has remained in place ever since.

Neil always cited this song as one of his favorites to play live and was always "excited" when they all agreed to play it on a particular tour. Interestingly, following its inclusion on the 1982 'Signals' tour, it was dropped from their live set until 1990's 'Presto' Tour. Geddy had said he had to relearn the whole song as he had completely forgotten how to play it.

Another one well done. Really enjoy your dialog accompanying the song. You do see RUSH for who they are. Here's one for you to check out that shows RUSH's softer side. There's no massive solos but the entirety of the experience with strings behind them and the lighting is amazing. Not necessary for a reaction, just for you to enjoy the completeness of RUSH.
