  • After going back and forth between the Fujifilm X-H2S and Sony FX30 for about a year, I eventually ended up going for the Fuji. But do I regret going for the Fuji instead of the Sony? These are my thoughts after owning the Fuji for about one month.

    yo, don't regret anything, I switched from A7IV to X-H2s, SLOG is also noisy when underexposed. Also even tho Sony AF is better, it's not out of this world better by any means. I am still getting familliar with the fuji, but so far the AF is keeping up with my toddler no problem what so ever (and yes a toddler is the ultimate AF test). Also even tho not marketed as dual native ISO, the X-H2s is cleaning up at 3200 ISO which is pretty much identical to 2500 ISO on FX30 (fuji and sony seem to masure ISO slightly different at least to my eye). By choosing Fuji u gained an EVF, better screen, actuall shutter, faaar less rolling shutter, thanks to the stacked sensor, better DR, less crop in 4k120, film simulations, 6k open gate, internal pro res recording etc.There is no better true Hybrid APS-C camera on the market - enjoy it!

      Thanks a lot for sharing your point of view! Feels good coming from someone who actually used Sony and Fuji. Apparently, as you state, the X-H2S cleans up at 3200 ISO which I didn't know when I purchased the camera. Still have to test that. Eventually it came down to the lenses I already had + the fact that this is indeed a true hybrid and the FX30 is absolutely not. Your comment made me feel even better about my purchase, thank you ;).

      @@AntonJDCreativescleans up is at 3200 only when using flog2 profile and the rolling shutter performance taking a hit becoming like the Sony fx30 given that it's 12bit log file.
      Using an external recorder will output braw which is just amazing to grade and overwork and tweak
      It's a dream.
      Also has a different range in flog1 as the second base kicks in at iso 2000 like the previous Fuji xt4
      If you self grade the log on Fuji ,it's alot less noisier than applying the official lut from Fuji then grading further
      The thing about the sensor is that's alot more organic noise wise and looks more like grain which gives the footage some character.
      It's abit too sharp for my taste but nothing a good promist filter can't solve or even better getting a cine lens with lots of character
      Cook released some amazing lenses for APSC systems which are fast primes that match the real deal.
      Siriu has a set of budget conscious cine primes that also are also plenty fast and have that digital look edged down just right.
      If you wanna go super budget
      There are also the viltrox trinity primes cine lenses
      Those do need a good promist filter though to emulate classic vintage look.
      There are lots of options for this sensor
      Also the open gate formate unlocks the ability to use anamorphic lenses or adapters like the Siriu.
      The colors of this camera combined with a nice set of lenses that have a certain character would create magic ,specially have two powerful lights (300 watt + fernel Bowens focusing beam lens for cob lights) and a huge bounce would let you make some super AAA like shots.
      The sensor is very very capable.
      I do wish Fuji would finally dip into the cine scene with a camera oriented only and only for video ,maybe a box shaped body with that stacked sensor and with anamorphic desqueeze plus on board xlr and gain audio mixer.
      I would buy it in a heartbeat

    As a owner of both FX30 and XH2S I can give you answers. But maybe you (and other Sony users) won't like them. First of all, I'm a filmmaker and content creator. I don't review cameras for the sake of it or to get views and likes, these are tools and I make a living out of them.
    So, the facts after owning both for a little less than 6 month, again as a filmmau : XH2S is just better in every single way. What do you need : colors? Dynamic range? Open Gate? 6.2K? Noise patterns? IBIS? Menu? Exposure tools? Frame rates? Codecs? All of that is better on the XH2S, and/or are non existent on the FX30. In 2023, I cannot work without ProRes personally. The FX30 or any other camera that cost less than $6k in Sony's lineup don't have it. Instead you're forced to use these tiny codecs. Same for the DCI 4K. Even though the FX30 offers some flavors of it, you have to put the camera in another weird mode to use it. And it doesn't work with all the codecs. If you want regular 4k, you won't be able to playback your DCI files and vice versa, none of these weird things with Fuji. You can access 24, 25, 30, 60, 120, 240 fps all on the same menu without going into a weird mode or even rebooting the camera. Oh, and 4K 120 is not available if you don't have a v90 SD card or a proprietary cf Express type A card on the FX30. The Xh2s boast and industry standard Cf express type B slot. To sum it up : the fx30 doesn't have cf Express type B, good IBIS, good colors, ProRes, 6k, open gate, the dynamic range is passable, not great, the menu has weird limitations and reboots all the time, and the noise pattern is uglier. I personally find the autofocus on the xh2s very good (not as good as Sony) so I really don't care about that part. But the camera looks good though 🤣 So, specs and facts wise XH2S>FX30. I would even argue it's better than more expensive Sony full frame cameras. Unfortunately the UA-cam and influencer gods will always push for the brand that can pay most 🙃

      Thank you so much for this elaborate and detailed comment! All very valid points. My mind always rationally knew the X-H2s was the smarter and (much) better option overall. Especially when owning some x-mount lenses. But I was so drawn to the Sony system to see what it's all about and to see if S-Log 3 is so good as it appears to be to me. F-Log 2 will probably give me similar results, although as I've said previously, I'm not getting the most out of F-Log 2 right now because it's pretty grainy and muddy at times... CF Express Type B is awesome, relatively affordable and just lives inside my X-H2s as it gives me so much storage. I would arguably say the IBIS on the FX30 is better from what I've seen from it on one hand and my experience with the Fuji on the other. It's really not great in my opinion. I even feel it was better on my X-S10 I had before, which sounds crazy. But for all the rest, you're spot on I think. Autofocus is indeed pretty good in video, in photo it's amazing even. Nails focus on walking subjects and is really sticky. Thank you for making me feel better about my purchase again 🤣.

      Yeah, you right...mostly. 😂 Definitely, the codecs on Fuji are great and from what I see, the fuji has very sharp video quality. My xs-10 has a much sharper FullHD than my sony a7iii. The photos out of Fuji are very sharp, the xs-20 has indeed sharper image then a6700 as an example. But in photography world, when I use sony damn, i get all in focus, dark, foggy, eye, everything is in focus and focuses super fast. In video mode, Fuji is better everywhere, except the damn focus and sometimes the build quality. Drives me nuts sometimes. You literally have to use new fuji glass to come close to sony's AF. Even then, it hunts and is unreliable. If you use for cinematic videos, then mostly you use MF so its good. For events, tracking people, animals, etc. Hard time with Fuji. If you use non-native lens, God help you. It does the job but you have to be very careful with AF. Also the fuji cameras are prone to lags, errors, etc and the build quality is not up to sony. If Fuji improve the AF a lot more, oh yes, that would change a lot

  • @VidzbyG
    @VidzbyG 9 місяців тому +8

    I went back and forth on the same issue. Wanted to jump in to talk about f-log2 noise. Something I found super helpful is to obviously try to slightly over expose if it’s possible, or go to 3200 ISO but nothing in between. The other thing that has minimized noise in my experience is to raise the midtones instead of the shadows. The mid is where most of the detail is, and it will give you a much better result. Leave the shadow dark.

    • @AntonJDCreatives
      @AntonJDCreatives  9 місяців тому

      Thanks a lot for the helpful tip man. Will definitely be trying this out. Sometimes the noise is just... very there. But I haven't really been shooting at either 1250 or 3200 but probably somewhere in between in dimmer conditions... maybe this will help. I do have a feeling the shadows indeed carry the most noise. Like you said, sometimes it's perfectly fine to leave shadows completely black. It even adds to the cinematic feel in certain situations. Thanks again!

    For anyone contemplating between Fuji and Sony, I'll say that both have pros and cons like anything else, but so far, for my wedding shoots I find my Fuji XH2 more intuitive and provides more confidence in the image I'll get than my FX3.
    I'm a long time Fuji fanboy and I just happened to pick up an FX3 that I got for a steal, so I'm still getting used to the FX3. I've just shot a wedding with it this weekend and I have another one coming up soon, so after that I'll make a review of actual user thoughts comparing the two for wedding films, but so far here are my thoughts on the FX3 compared to my XH2.
    Fx3 doesn't have full resolution coverage on a typical monitor. I believe you may get full coverage on a small HD or atomos, but not on my portkeys. It's cropped an tiny. You can't also have both LCD and monitor display with info overlay. It's one or the other.
    No one mentions how annoying the on/off switch for the FX3 is. For weddings, you have to be quick, so it's much simpler to just have the switch by the shutter button on the Fuji.
    Fuji xh2 screen is much sharper and gives me more confidence in what I'm seeing is what I'll get. Also, maybe I"m used to flog, but I find it very easy to expose whereas I'm not always sure I'll get the image I'm looking for on the fx3. Something about how it shows exposure with it's metering feels off. With the fuji, I just go a touch over zero and make sure my highlights don't clip. with the FX3, sometimes it says around plus 2, but the shadows still look too dark.
    So many items in the menu on the fx3. I know it's more production oriented, but feels like things are buried.
    And most importantly, image quality -- from short tests, I don't see a massive difference between the two in terms of dynamic range, but I will say the FX3 does feel like it has more depth, a certain richness to it. I also really like the way the ibis works on it. Very natural feeling and what I was looking for.
    I shoot my fuji's at 10,000 iso when needed and I think the grain looks nice, so it's ok. I was really hoping battery was going to be good on the fx3, but it drains quick. I can see it run down just from having it on and looking through the menu.
    I also do hybrid work, so having the xh2 to take photos is also a plus.
    The sharpness and full frame look of the fx3 is really nice though.
    Autofocus is great, but not miles ahead of the xh2. The xh2 is quite good and much better than my xt4.
    So, I'll shoot another wedding and see if I can deal with the quirks, but not being completely sure about the shots I'm getting is another stressor I don't like having on wedding days.
    Again, I'm new to sony so I realize things may take time, but wanted to share with you guys who may be wondering about both systems.

      Wow, really really enjoyed this in depth POV from someone who has really used both systems. Always so hard choosing something unknowingly and just off standalone reviews. I actually think you stating the AF isn't THAT much better on the Sony is worth more to me than watching a review on UA-cam. Other small things you mention on the FX3's quirks, I also didn't know. Makes me feel better about my Fuji purchase. Coincidentally I recently shot my first wedding with the X-H2S and it went quite well! AF wasn't always super reliable, especially in dimmer conditions. Still learning the camera but the footage I was able to shoot at low ISO's was great! Higher ISO's were quite grainy to my eye... Still editing that video though.

      @@AntonJDCreatives happy to help! I would say autofocus in general has its limitations. Even the fx3 hunted in super low light. So know when you need/can use autofocus and when it’s is critical, use manual focus.
      As for high iso noise, I find Fuji noise to be pleasing, not distracting, so it’s never bothered me, but I’m sure there are ways/software to denoise if you prefer it cleaner.
      I think the biggest difference I’m noticing is the the full frame look.
      That being said, our clients won’t notice the difference. As long as there’s a certain level of polish and we capture great memories, that’s all they care about.

For example, I like the vintage dials on the X-T4 and X-T5, but then I shoot a lot of video, and I am not liking the ergonomics of the X-H2s, nor do I see a massive improvement in video image quality. NR in Davinci or Final Cut was both a disaster. I now have bought a M2 MacBook Air 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD which it handles way better. My M1 Pro is even under orange pressure with light editing so I think pushing it to the limit for 2 years and a half has really taken a toll and it just slowed down because of constant high swap memory being used.

      Hey thank you for the comment! I started using the DJI mic with the receiver plugged into my camera and basically just plugged and played, letting the db setting be where it was. I had some trouble, sometimes loud audio and sometimes quiet, which a compressor wouldn't totally fix. In this video, I actually used the transmitter as a standalone and synced up the audio in post. This is just quicker for me to get my recording going. Didn't touch the settings either! I did some processing here but still have some pops here and there and I was surprised how sensitive it was to air moving from my arms and stuff without the little fur on the mic. Fellow fuji shooter/UA-camr here. I shoot with xh2s as well professionally in all scenarios. What noise reduction software do you use? I use davinci noise reduction on my M1 Pro and i😢 takes nowhere near 1 hour. I would say a 10 second clip takes maybe 8-10 minutes…. Mine has 16gb of Ram maybe that helps.. Also 3200 ISO is the second gain like others said. Anything at 30 Fps or less gives you 1 extra stop of dynamic range because the sensor reads out this frame rate at 14bit 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

    • @AntonJDCreatives

      Hi Adnan! I have watched some of your videos in the past so thank you very much for the comment! My M1 MacBook Pro had 8gb of RAM and 256gb SSD and was super slow the past couple of months. Memory pressure was huge even with light editing so that probably had a lot to do with it. I bought a new M2 MacBook Air with 16gb of RAM and 512gb SSD and this is blazingly fast in comparison (made a video about it). So noise reduction won't be such a huge problem anymore I think (probably still slower than your Pro but that's okay). I just use the noise reduction inside Resolve and Final Cut Pro. I have tested the 3200 ISO the last couple of weeks and it does seem a lot cleaner. I don't know if it's a clear cut second native ISO like Sony uses where it's the cleanest it can be, but it certainly cleans up compared to 2500. Didn't know about the extra stop of DR in 30fps or less. Thanks again for the educational comment!

I've been experiencing some image quality issues (banding, pixelating blotches and holograms in the shadows when shooting low light). Probably will make a short video about these issues as I want to know if anybody else is experiencing them. Not really thrilled to be sending it off for warranty so I want to make sure it's really a problem with the camera/sensor. Other than that + the AF I think the camera is indeed pretty great! The A7S3 only looks clean because it doesn't allow you to disable the heavy in camera noise reduction. If you shoot RAW on the A7S3 be prepared for a lot of noise.
    Use any cinema camera Venice, Alexa or RED and there will always be noise. If I don't want any noise on the Alexa I over expose by 1-2 stops. 800 iso is base (most even distribution of highlights and shadows), but if I want no noise in a dimly lit situation I'd shoot at 200 iso. You are essentially getting two stops less highlight detail but getting cleaner shadows. It's never really an issue with the Alexa as you have so much highlight room, not as much with other cameras.
    I mean the nice thing with the FX6 (or RAW with the A7S3) is that at 12,800 iso you could overexpose a lot of dimly lit situations and get a cleaner image. But exposing normally at 12,800 is going to have a lot of noise.
    I still hate Sony SOC colors though. Canon and Fuji look so much nicer out of camera. I just got the FX30 and was kind of surprised how bad it looked without grading.

    • @AntonJDCreatives
      @AntonJDCreatives  6 місяців тому

      Thank you for this elaborate comment and sharing your experience! It seems like you have quite some experience in the field and shot with the Alexa yourself, so you make me feel better about m purchase again 😆. In camera noise reduction affects the sharpness as well as far as I know. But the footage I see online from the Sony camera's (FX's and A7s3) looks so crispy and sharp while also having very little noise, so that's why I'm intrigued. That said, I have yet to get my X-H2s to look as crispy as footage from it online too, so that's probably on me. Thanks again!

      All these cameras use Sony sensors. The Pocket 6k and the FX30 is the same Sony variant sensor. The difference is processing. Sony uses noise reduction and then sharpening. The FX3 sensor is natively only 4k so it resolves a lot less detail then the XH2S. To be honest the higher end the camera is the more noisy and softer it'll look as there is no internal processing.
      The XH2S has more dynamic range than the FX30 though. It has a 14bit readout, where as the FX30 is 12 bit. I don't know why Sony didn't use the same sensor for the FX30, probably so they could sell it for cheaper. The XH2S processor is also faster so you have less rolling shutter and it can do almost full sensor 120fps. Open gate and internal prores are also great.
      The Sony auto focus is next level but the sensor itself in the FX30 is meh. It's not terrible by any means but the XH2S is pretty amazing.
      I prefer a softer organic look. To be fair doing noise reduction is post as well as sharpening makes your renders take a long time. Easy for big productions not so much for small ones. I'd rather live with some noise then be forced into the processed DSLR look. But that's just me.

    I have owned the XS-20 as well as 3 other Fuji cameras and I’m now on Sony a6700. I can confirm all of your Fuji complaints. I found that autofocus was actually worse on xs20 compared to my xs10 and have seen others confirm this. Fan boys will make excuses but I’m not new to Fuji and the autofocus is a real issue for video. The Sony is significantly better and dynamic range is roughly the same. With the phantom luts being out for both systems, I can get equal image quality with all the Sony advantages.

      Never touched a Sony camera so I can't speak for their camera's. But compared to my Canon M50 which was my first camera years ago, the autofocus is definitely (much) worse. I can also confirm that the autofocus on my X-S10 felt better than the X-H2s (at times). Sometimes it seems like the footage coming out of the X-H2s is not that sharp or mushy too, but I'm starting to think it could be the autofocus being slightly off here or there giving me that feeling. I still own my GH5 and that camera is much crisper, but I always use manual focus on that camera. Maybe I should test out manual focus on the X-H2s and see what's what. Hello, about "noise" - I guess you are doing something wrong with the settings. Iris? Shooter speed? ISO? Focus hunting on Fuji- it's not about the camera it's about Lenses -it's well known.

    • @AntonJDCreatives
      @AntonJDCreatives  6 місяців тому +1

      Definitely not setting related. Shutter at 1/48 and ISO 1250 are pretty much fixed when shooting in daylight F-Log2, so I adjust exposure with two things remaining being aperture and VND and making sure my exposure is correct. Shots could be a tad under or over but that shouldn't really be a problem to recover in post without having a lot of noise. Just something I noticed and I don't know why it occurs. Sometimes I think I have a faulty X-H2s unit, then the day after it appears to be a lot better. Weird. I mostly use the Sigma 18-50 so while not a Fuji native lens, still third party native and should perform well. Thank you for your comment!

    • @0dfilm384
      @0dfilm384 6 місяців тому

      @@AntonJDCreatives Dear Anton, I thought you were shooting in low light..Your situation is very strange. There must be no noise in the footage from daylight shooting! I have a strong suspicion that it's a faulty camera or lens. Also, you mentioned "..Shots could be a tad under or over .. ' How strongly you are doing this? Footage has to be exposed just correct. My extra reminders: 1. Higher ISO generates noise. You just must keep your ISO at a minimum letting more real light (information) come throw the lens. The native minimum ISO of this camera is ISO 125 so you have to keep on it, especially when you shooting FLOG! (In F-Log mode is probably another number, but keep it at a minimum). 2. Open. max your aperture - let the light come to the sensor 3. Reduce light With ND if is too bright.

    Both great cameras. I've been tempted by the FX30 as it's a great camera, killer AF and nice features. But for me, the Fuji wins out because of CFB cards are half the cost of CFA, 6K open gate means not having to flip the camera to shoot vertically for intelligence challenged clients who think shooting vertically is a wise idea, Fuji colors are far superior to the FX30 colors, Internal ProRes rules. I know the Sony has superior AF but I just bought a set of X Mount Cine Primes for my X-T3s and I own a few Fuji XF lenses, so like you, already owning Fuji lenses would mean starting over with E Mount lenses.
    If I was in the Sony FX ecosystem, I'd buy the FX30 but I'm not and objectively, owning and loving shooting with three X-T3s, the XH-2S is the best fit for me, by far I know the AF isn't as good and probably the IBIS isn't as well but the other factors are more important to me. I am weaning myself off of using AF anyways so not a huge factor, I really don't like AF, although it's handy for events and run & gun. But I used to shoot S16 and spent a good portion of my career NOT having AF and in most situations, AF kind of sucks, it always looks robotic and hunts, even on the Sonys at times (I rent and shoot the FX3 and FX6/9 often) I'll have to get up to speed using Flog 2, but Flog 1 is a breeze to use.
    Unlike most younger shooters, I'm not obsessed with squeaky clean "noiseless" images, those just resemble soulless digital video to me, having shot shot a ton of film over my career, I kind of like grain and noise if it's not too overbearing. That's always been my issue with REDs, they look good to me but they look digital, unlike the ALEV sensor in the Arris. I find the Fujis have a similar vibe to me as the Arri sensor and the grain is usually pretty nice.

      It seems like you have a lot of experience in the field using various cameras, so I rate comments like this very highly. All really valid points. I have an image quality issue with my X-H2s though, and last weekend it became pretty apparent again. It's a kind of banding or blotchy situation in the darker parts of my image. This is why the camera hasn't clicked for me as of yet. In some shoots everything goes well, and then the next shoot this issue ruins numerous shots. I'm going to make a video about it this week to see if somebody has experienced this as well or what the causes of this issue could be. I'm dreading to send it off to warranty. Even light editing on it right now is stuttering with memory pressure being in the orange.

Unless you are referring to the Macbook Pro M1, which is different than the M1 Pro Macbook Pro. God, I hate Apple's current naming of pro chips lol.
      If you indeed have 8GB M1 Macbook Pro and then switch to the M2 Air with 15", 16GB and 512GB SSD the jump will be noticeable thanks to memory alone. However, I'd still argue that for NR purposes, the M2 Air is rather lackluster. I'd suggest to have a favorite setting for NR as a preset and add it right before exporting.
