That is interesting your clip showing rolling shutter on the GH6. I have a GH6 and not really noticed rolling shutter issues before. While I don't shoot in ProRes on the GH6 due do the huge file sizes, I do wonder why the firmware update they released to add ProRes to other resolutions besides 5.7K, they left out adding ProRes UHD resolution, which makes no sense to me. I bought a GH6 after using a GH5 since it came out. Yes the GH6 is a bit bigger but not massively so. It actually felt more well balanced in my hands than the GH5. I have never relied on Autofocus and I am happy with manual focus 99% of the time. The things I like about the GH6: 1. Colors in V-Log 2. Dynamic Range Boost 3. RAW Output/ProRes Internal even if they decided not to add UHD resolution to ProRes internal. 4. Shutter Angle and Waveforms. 5.The crop. Not everyone likes the 2x crop, but for wildlife shooting it is great. I could use the Leica 100-400 and get a FF equivalent 200-800mm range, which I don't think you can get a FF zoom lens that has that reach and if you could it would be huge and heavy. You can also use the Pixel to Pixel to get a bit closer to the subject when not in 5.8/5.9K or shooting RAW externally. to get a closer shot without changing lenses. 6. Easy to use menu system. 7. USB-C power. I have powered my GH6 for over 5 hours on a Anker PD battery and still had most of the battery life left. 8. Bright screen 9.Shutter angle 10. 5.8K open gate where you can add markers on screen for framing for different situations. I have used it crop to 16:9 5K in editing. 11. No overheating issues. 12. Smaller native lenses and a huge amount of lens options, especially with adaptors. 13. While not specific to the GH6, but I really appreciate Panasonic's customer service and the Lumix live streams they do on UA-cam every Thursday on their cameras, lenses accessories and using them. You don't usually get other camera companies doing streams like that. 14. Focus transitions. I love being able to set focus points in camera and be able to do focus pulls perfectly every time at the same speed without having to do it manually. 15. Great IBIS
I have a GH5, sold my a cam which was my pocket 6k pro. It was too cumbersome for one man band work, as there was no auto focus and IBIS is non existent. Was going to get the FX3 but now I think I will just get the FX30. Just so much better bang for the buck features for my work flow. Great video!
Hmmm. With the X-H2s, it is reliable in most situations with a single face. I find that useful, even if there are situations where I cannot rely on it. With AF+M and focus lock, I can navigate most of the problems in narrative work at least.
I think this depends on what you do. It is like with stabilization. There are different qualities in different situations. Nothing beats a good tripod. For some situations (astro- photography for example), you can say it has to be like a tripod or it's worth nothing. For other use cases, good enough is good enough.
Shot weddings for over 5 years and never had I used AF on our Canon 5DMII and our a7siii. Same goes to corporate work, we’re already using modded cine lens sets so no point in using AF.
I dropped Fujifilm after owning 4 of them. The autofocus made me look like an amateur so many times. Even checking critical focus on C1 id ben on the chin, ear, or forehead despite being locked on the eye. They look great but professional they are not.

Excellent review! The most useful info packed into one review I think I've ever seen! For me, the XH2S is the clear winner on a good balance of features alone, but if you look at some videos comparing image quality to much more expensive cameras like the Canon R5c or Sony FX3, the XH2s is a no brainer. It actually beats these cameras in many aspects of image quality. I'm hoping they'll improve AF and IBIS with firmware, but even as-is, these are adequate for me personally. Aloha!
@@JordanLedbetter Definitely concerned about image quality, and I have a couple BMPCC4K's, which are very similar to the 6. From the footage I've seen, the XH2s holds it's own or beats the BMPP4K and maybe similar 6k. The fact that the BM stuff doesn't have continuous AF or really any ability to take proper photos is kind of a deal killer either wsy. The EF mount, huge size and weight, non-flippy screen and mediocre battery life don't help either. It's a great cinema camera for studio work with someone pulling focus though.
@@evankolpack completely agree with your comments the negatives of the 6k. It's for those reasons that I stick with my 4k. However, while I agree that the Fuji is close, it still looks "digital" to me. It's the same reason I traded my a7siii for my BMPCC - to get rid of that home video, digital look. The texture of the BMPCC footage and ease of grading raw footage make shooting a pleasure. They need to release a BMPCC 4k pro with tilt/flip screen (not just flip), E-mount or RF-mount, slimmed down body, internal NDs, and a slightly bigger battery.
@@JordanLedbetter Did you see the underexpose test in this very video? You're complaining about the XH2S looking "digital" when it's the only one that doesn't have bitcrushed CMOS artifacts. What can make Fuji look "digital" is simply that you're on average putting orders of magnitude better glass in front of the sensor than you are on the BMPCC or GH6. You have to intentionally select the lenses that are lower-resolving or use filters.
BMPCC6K if colour science and cinematic Image quality is your bag. FX30 if decent reliable autofocus is the deal breaker, GH6 for IBIS, open gate and anamorphic on a budget and Fuji if stills are important.
With ProRes 422 internal, external, whatever, the color science is just better in comparison to the GH5 and GH5s. i have the gh5s and the gh6. WORLD of a difference. TO give you closure, ive had the Ursa BM and the Gh6 is about the same as far as quality @@Jake_203
an awesome video as normal guys, I was waiting on this one in particular because I'm a GH6 owner and I've been debating on whether the FX30 was a right fit to my workflow, I need reliable autofocus in various situations, the GH6 has improved vastly to previous models I've own but in that regard it has let me down in some occasions and Sony's autofocus is in its own category, however I'd like to add some stuff: - As a Solo shooter that has experience with cameras like the A7SIII, A7III, A6600 and several more Sony cameras, the IBIS is pretty much the thing I hate about them, its not good, its better then not having, that's for sure, but I wouldn't call it "reliable", compared to the other ones, the GH6 has the best IBIS, I actually don't use a gimbal because of how good it is, sure there is a time and place for a gimbal because IBIS is not replacing it, but it gets to a point that in most situations, it almost does. - the GH6 offers a lot of recording options with no crop to its image, it oversamples, the other brands have crops in some resolution and recording options. - the option to record externally with the Fuji in BRaw and ProRes Raw, is something worth mentioning, GH6 and FX30 have the ProRes Raw option too but no BRaw. - the lens selection with the P6K Pro in the "kit" or "bundle" part of the video (27:50) but the one for the GH6 is not the best choice IMO, the 12-35mm f2.8 its better, for the fuji there's not a lot of options on that constant aperture option but for the E-mount there are a couple of good alternatives to that very expensive G16-55mm but I agree, its not precisely easy to recommend the best "kit" to fit anyone's needs. I went with the GH6 because as a Solo shooter (in most situations), that is the best overall package when it comes to physical and software features IMO, but I will be adding an FX30 for those situations were the GH6 lacks, mainly in autofocus and size but YES, EVERY CAMERA IN THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME, you pretty much can't go wrong.
@@pavelsuprun8113 I use my cameras in different scenarios, heat is sometimes an issue, I’ve seen that the A7IV tends to overheat sometimes, I don’t want to take that risk getting a camera like that and having to pause a shoot because the camera is off, that has happened with the a6600 series and once with the A7III for some reason, so the FX30 is a clear winner there, besides the fact that it does not crop in 4K 60p which is what I use the most, it’s a winner for me, the A7IV is still in my horizon, I haven’t used it, but I bet is amazing, I used the A7SIII for a year and it was amazing, but it lacked the video features so I went with the GH6 for that.
"the GH6 offers a lot of recording options with no crop" , when your no crop is still worst that others' cropped image, is that still an advantage? The final product is what it does matter.
@@johnso2399 I imagine you having the camera know what you’re talking about, sure the final image is what it counts, I can imagine CVP knows that already too after listing some specs for every camera as I did in my previous comment.
One of the reasons I went with the GH6 is that the internal audio preamps are actually quite good. I have adapted XLR dynamic mics with excellent fidelity.
I am thinking about the Sony FX30. I like the features and all it can do. But I currently am a hybrid shooting with the Sony A6600 and love the camera. It paid for itself in less than 6 months during the peak of Covid. I have a love for Sony I had a Z5U and DCR-VX2000 and 1000. So have been at it for a long time. My thought is that the FX30 and the A6600 use the same lenses, batteries, and media for the most part. So wouldn't have to retool as much. So what would your input be for my idea?
Pretty great video... I've been kind of lusting after the xh2s, but with a gh6 and the external recorder for raw, I really have no excuses. I feel like you can do almost anything you want creatively on that camera. And having just grabbed a few sirui anamorphic lenses, with the anamorphic desqueeze in camera, and anamorphic stabilization, you can get some truly cool cinematic images out of it. There are just so many amazing options out there now, everyone can make some beautiful stuff.
Xh2s records raw externally as well… look deeper into the gh6 in terms of what it’s doing with line skipping. Look at Gerald undone review on this he was pretty disappointed.
But the X-H2s has no anamorphic support, though. And honestly the GH6 should be awesome and has some advantages line better video assist tools. (I have the X-H2s though) I don't really understand the fuzz about raw. H265 4:2:2 10bit flog and/or flog2 have plenty of dynamic range with less space needed. Or am I missing something? I even have the Video Assist but I don't see the point of raw. (for photos the story is completely different)
@@pkolloch I hear you on the anamorphic although you should be able to shoot with a ninja v and de squeeze in the recorder if I’m not mistaken?? The flog footage is pretty crazy honestly and I agree with you the latitude of post processing is astonishing. To me personally it’s not far off from RAW it’s maybe 70% there. Nice thing with RAW is the ability to adjust white balance after the fact, and change other various values more accurately but like you mentioned I don’t think it’s worth the insane amount of space needed.
I think under the same circumstances the FX30 can go head to head with the Pocket 6K , and even beat it in many areas. However, most users of the BM are experienced cinematographers while most users of the FX30 are new into that world.
Not having a modern mirrorless mount is what I think holds back the 6k pro the most now. Being able to adapt to any type of lens with a mirrorless mount rather than being locked to ef, which is going to be a dead mount soon I'd guess, should be considered for people building a kit from scratch.
EF will be with us for many years, and I absolutly happy BMD have chosen EF-mount. Great lenses to choose, affordable all, and EF better suites for internal ND-system, allowing lower price. BMD is doing all right!
@@pavelsuprun8113 I mean Canon is already moving their cinema line to RF, chances are when they update their C line "camcorders" they'll not be using EF anymore if I had to guess. Both Sony and Canon have mirrorless mount cameras with internal ND filters, that argument is moot now. Also the ability to add adapters with ND filters is an option. I do agree that there are nice and affordable options for ef but personally I don't think an ef mounted camera would be the way I want to go rather than something I could adapt EF glass to instead.

BMD made the camera for filming TODAY, while you are thinking about 20+ years ahead. Also consider that many mirrorless lenses has no direct focusing drive, so for BMD 6K pro you almost for shure will need good-old DSLR lens anyway. You can easily adapt other DSLR lenses to EF.

The Pocket 6K Pro is great, but it does feel like the GH6 is an afterthought compared to how you describe the other cameras. I mean, the FX30 is in Sony's cinema line and still lacks a lot of cine features like shutter angle and waveform. The GH6 has these features and more (SSD recording as you show in the video), but it almost feels like you guys would recommend the Sony over it. The 6K Pro and GH6 are way better than both the XH2s and FX30 in cine functionality and image quality.
Shutter angle and waveform would be nice to have. And false color!! But I don't agree about the image quality at all. Rolling shutter with the blackmagic is no fun from what I have seen on the net (no actual real life experience here).
@@pkolloch While I wouldn't use the Pocket 6K Pro as a crash camera, the rolling shutter didn't bother me in the two shoots I've used it (I don't own it). The 6K Pro is to be used deliberately, a lot like using higher end cinema cameras. The footage out of it was beautiful and I stand by my assertion, but to each their own. The FX30 feels like a quick cash grab by Sony before they use that same sensor in a cheaper APS-C camera. The XH2s has fantastic IQ but it is hampered by a lack of functionality. Which leaves the 6K Pro and GH6.

For my own work and just to start I'll prolly get the fx30 because it is much more versatile for solo situations. Whereas I find that in most "controlled" cine work I just rent an Ursa 12k because I can afford all the support it needs. Just my opinion tho.
What ISO did you use on the Pocket 6k? And did you grade with color management/wide gamut? Because that gives you tons more latitude when recovering information in post

My dear CVP people, you literally covered ALL the cameras I am in doubt with ahah I am more oriented towards the Blackmagic since I own only Canon lenses, but the appearance of the FX30 confused me a bit. This is PROBABLY the best comparison video I've ever seen regarding cinema cameras. I have a question (I don't know if someone will ever answer this). The Blackmagic obsolete EF Mount is a no go for me - I adapt vintage lenses for video shooting, stills not so much. Give me a mirrorless BlackMagic please. I’d choose the bigger sensor of a used S5 or Sigma FP over a GH6, and the superior autofocus of the FX30 over a X-H2. Then the question is - do I fork out the extra money for reliable Sony autofocus and somewhat compromise on PQ ? The Canon R6 mkII, A7SIII, FX3 are ticking all my boxes but all beyond my budget. Currently shooting 5K 14 bit RAW on an EOS M with Magic Lantern - still on the fence for a new cam.
Ive got a 6k BM and after using the xT3 I can say its not even close. The 6k is so much easier to use and the image is stunning. The xT3 autofocus was unusable even after updates, image was noisy, and the lens….not great. If the 6k 2.0 had Canons autofocus it would be a beast.
My X-T3 is starting to become quirky so I ran into this video when looking at choices. You gave me a damm headache...LOL . Actually, I am looking for something small, with good stabilization and auto focus. From watching your video, I think its between fx 30 and X-H2S.
I brought the blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6k G2 and have adapter that allows me to use nikon f mount lenses. And I have EF 28mm to 85mm Cinema Lens. I have a nikon Z6 and d7500 cameras and I just got the blackmagic camera and it's actually a better camera for filming only which is what is my primary goal. Speaking as semi pro ( have done courses at University) Cinematographer on a budget though I have a Sony Cinema Camera I looking for a camera I can use for action that is smaller and allow me to to use the cine lens as well as zoom lens which the nikon f mount lens adaptor allows me to do. So in essence the blackmagic camera is not restricted to by other lenses mounting and allows me to use wide angle, zoom , 50mm and fisheye lenses. It means I can use my nikon z6 with Anamorphic lenses and the blackmagic set up with the 28mm to 85mm or any of f mount lens when the Sony camera is more restricted in its versatility. Also the blackmagic camera allows use of ssd drives, usb flash drive as well as cfast card and sd card so if the cfast card fails or you just need to switch to a secondary storage you can switch to the ssd drive .The blackmagic camera will be great for action filming as it will add a rough feel to it as films have become too smooth and the lack of stability in the blackmagic camera is not a issue for me and anyone using resolve or premiere (I have both) will be able to resolve in post production if its a bit much and less face it Good films are the ones you have to wait for and take at least a couple of years to put together. So I think deciding what camera is for you depends on what you want out of that camera especially when you can also make use of existing equipment you have already. On a note to CVP this was a good review of these cameras and I recently brought the blackmagic camera from you Thanks guys for great the service . Oh by the way the blackmagic camera at the moment comes with a free pocket cinema camera evf unit , which is another reason I love the blackmagic camera I can use or not use the viewer by adding or removing it or using the position to add other equipment.
15. Great IBIS
I also have a gh6 and man if I could do 48i open gate I'd say it's the perfect camera.
I think Philip Bloom put it best: Auto Focus either works or it doesn't. An unreliable AF system is worth nothing.
@@Burritosarebetterthantacos wonder how you’ll feel when you’re using modded lens for manual focus work. Even more amateur? Being on set for an ad and asking why there’s no AUTOFOCUS on the camera
Aloha!
A7-4 must be considered also
If you're concerned about image quality, then BMPCC is the clear winner
GH6 for the next level Leica lenses, Stabilization, and workflow.
The GH6 is King!
I had both the Pocket 6K and have GH6. They were both great but the GH6 has the better overall features. Plus that open gate!
Which image looks more cinematic? I can‘t decide between the GH6 and 6k
With ProRes 422 internal, external, whatever, the color science is just better in comparison to the GH5 and GH5s. i have the gh5s and the gh6. WORLD of a difference. TO give you closure, ive had the Ursa BM and the Gh6 is about the same as far as quality @@Jake_203
an awesome video as normal guys, I was waiting on this one in particular because I'm a GH6 owner and I've been debating on whether the FX30 was a right fit to my workflow, I need reliable autofocus in various situations, the GH6 has improved vastly to previous models I've own but in that regard it has let me down in some occasions and Sony's autofocus is in its own category, however I'd like to add some stuff:
- As a Solo shooter that has experience with cameras like the A7SIII, A7III, A6600 and several more Sony cameras, the IBIS is pretty much the thing I hate about them, its not good, its better then not having, that's for sure, but I wouldn't call it "reliable", compared to the other ones, the GH6 has the best IBIS, I actually don't use a gimbal because of how good it is, sure there is a time and place for a gimbal because IBIS is not replacing it, but it gets to a point that in most situations, it almost does.
I went with the GH6 because as a Solo shooter (in most situations), that is the best overall package when it comes to physical and software features IMO, but I will be adding an FX30 for those situations were the GH6 lacks, mainly in autofocus and size but YES, EVERY CAMERA IN THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME, you pretty much can't go wrong.
why FX30 when there is A7-4, double-format 4K video-cam: Aps-c+FF?
So what would your input be for my idea?
informative 30mins on particularly GH6, and pocket 6K Thanks CVP.
(I have the X-H2s though)
I don't really understand the fuzz about raw.
@@adnan_velic gerald is a numbers guy. In real life gh6 footage looks fantastic and NO ONE is disappointed with image quality
@@pkolloch Fuji released a video going over anamorphic support with xh2s. Seemed to work fine. What are you referring to?
FX30 is my favorite cinema camera that is under $3k, it makes you feel like making a movie. The XH2 is the best all around hybrid camera though.
the lumix S5 can be got around $1300ish US these days and compares to any of these very well
I think under the same circumstances the FX30 can go head to head with the Pocket 6K , and even beat it in many areas.
@@ledheavy26 Adapters with filters is not nearly the same as internal ND in terms of speed/convinience.
Can you buy RF or E mount with internal NDs for 2500?
BMD made the camera for filming TODAY, while you are thinking about 20+ years ahead. Also consider that many mirrorless lenses has no direct focusing drive, so for BMD 6K pro you almost for shure will need good-old DSLR lens anyway.
You can easily adapt other DSLR lenses to EF.
@@SuperSuperka You're seriously suggesting it'll take 20 years for us to get mirrorless lens mounted cinema cameras with built in ND filter systems for $2500?
@@ledheavy26 EF isn’t going anywhere soon. Still an abundance of EF glass on the market from Canon and 3rd parties. You also have manual cine lenses and can adapt to PL or even older glass like FD, M42 etc.
Coming from an older camera g85 I would say the auto focus on the GH6 is stunning
Honestly, cameras only recording in prores can be annoying for amateurs.
H265 4:2:2 10bit 4K >= 200 MBs delivers great quality at a relatively small size.
H265 is more taxing for the editing system though. But yeah I use H265, just not recommendable to everyone
@@Vinterloft depends on your hardware, e.g. if it has hardware decoding support like M1/M2s (I believe). That hardware might be cheaper than additional storage for prores.

Regardless of this fact, so many other posters here choose "features" over the superior Blackmagic image.
Thing is, I suck at pulling focus myself, and I honestly don't get the hate for the Sony Image. For my own work and just to start I'll prolly get the fx30 because it is much more versatile for solo situations. Whereas I find that in most "controlled" cine work I just rent an Ursa 12k because I can afford all the support it needs.
Just my opinion tho.

Confused between GH6 and FX30. How reliable is GH6 for wedding video and short film considering moderate use of autofocus for both situations?
GH5, GH5s and G9 user here- I've never used a GH6, but if the auto-focus is still based on depth-from-defocus, I would not trust it. Especially if you are relying on the LCD screen and don't have a larger viewing device. I've come to enjoy manual focusing with focus peaking, but I know that's not for everyone. Sony has cornered the market on autofocus. If that is your main concern, go Sony.

You do not mention power zoom options, nor the fx30 zoom rocker. Some of Sony's PZ lenses are also essentially parfocal. These are key features for video. Panasonic zooms almost always lose focus while zooming, and Canon does not offer power zooms until the expensive cine series. This is a big advantage for the Sony system.
