- In today's video we're doing a comparision between the Fujfiilm XH2s and Sony A7iv... Both are around the same price range at $2500.. We are going to go over the specs of both cameras and I'm going to show you some sample photos and videos from both machines and share my thoughts and opinion, and hopefully by the end of the video you're not so confused on what to get... Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses so it should be very interesting to check out!

Which one gives a better image quality/more detailed image resolution?
@@pinetworkminer8377 "better image quality" is subjective but I prefer Fuji's image. However a cleaner looking image is sony. A detailed image is going to be sony. Sony lenses are sharper than fuji lenses..Especially the gmasters. plus 33 mp is more than the 26mp so that will give you more detailed image resolution..

Right now Sony is the clear winner, new bodies that outclass competitors come and go, but good affordable AF glass at different focal ranges is hard to get on Fuji (and has been for a long time). Having said that Fuji makes incredible cameras for street photography and the video coming from the XH2 is incredible.....if Fuji get's more third party manufacturers to develop XF glass I will definitely give the edge to Fuji.
Had a Sony A7rx for 3 years and ever came to love the color. Just so.. so. With Fuji it is often great and never bad. Could not go back.

Some of the ISO comparisons shots had the A7iv in embedded preview... iirc it's a lower res preview and not the full details right? You gotta select all the images, go under Library > Previews > Build ... Previews.

XH2s as it is, same sensor specs but full frame + Sony autofocus and they would make a ton of money
around the 10 min mark I thought the fuji was just way sharper than the sony not actually more noise. The scratches and everything looked way sharper on the Fuji. What was NR set to?
Great comparison… the only issue I have is with the low light comparison. The Fujifilm looks to have a higher exposure, which will make noise stand out more. Adjusting the Sony exposure to match the Fuji will reveal more noise.
I’m actually really impressed with have the Fujifilm retains detail at higher ISO.
I get that. But if compared to each other equivalent there are things that should be untouched no?
This seems interesting. The Hybrid Shooter's testing showed the X-H2S was darker than Sony by 2/3 stops at same ISO values, hence ISO 2500 on XH2S looked like ISO 1600 on Sony. Yours is kinda like the reverse. Potentially t-stop differences? I'm not sure.
@@Iamtongue Personally, I think for a true comparison, exposure and even depth of field should be matched.
Same ISO number on each camera can result in different exposures.
One can also get away with shooting a full stop wider on APS-C while maintaining the same DOF as FF, so that factors in as well.

@@Iamtongue Oh actually, maybe in future see if you can adapt some old EF glass instead. That would get rid of any potential T-stop differences. Maybe with a Sigma/Canon 50mm or something.

Could you make a side-by-side viewfinder recording of the eye AF tracking in action for the A7IV & X-H2s? Preferably with a subject jumping around or moving quickly?
Tested the A7IV & X-H2s briefly at the store, but eye AF box on the Fuji trails behind moving subjects while the Sony was way more sticky tracking.
I can, but that’s not gonna be a 1 for 1 comparision because i don’t have an external monitor for both of them so I can’t record them at the same time.. there could be a lot of variable factors that could lean into both sides…
Could be that h2s unit didn’t have the latest firmware, cuz I saw an update following that particular issue.
Xh2 already has like 5 firmware updates since release date.
For some reason I think they will tweak those issues in the future.
I find the xh2s to be almost as fast as my Sony a1, which is arguably the best autofocus on the market right now; far superior than the a7IV. It’s very close, especially if you adjust the af settings beyond default.
@@TheJ_G read anecdotally comments like these claiming it is almost A1 or R5 level etc. Excited I went out to try it out at the store, but was not true. At least my user experience with moving subjects. I can kind of believe for static posing subjects.
Would love for someone to prove me wrong. Show the viewfinder eyeAF box action tracking side-by-side with another sony/canon and then maybe even 100% crop of the shots afterwards if they are in focus.
Videos from "The slanted lens" of a model walking towards the camera Fuji misses 5-6 shots out of 36 while sony nails each one. From "Jerred Z" show his son walking around and good number of shots weren't in focus slightly off. AF-S eye detect seem to work works, but AF-C falls apart.
Successful eye tracking is one thing, producing sharp pictures is something else. For people running in cloudy conditions, the A7iv tracking is working great, but only 30% of the shots are properly focused.
5:00 Why are fuji colors so dark, how do we get a clean image like sony?
🤔What do you think about APSC moded A7iv + lens Sigma 18-50 2.8 vs Fuji XH2s. As FF lens is too huge for my daily usage & videos. Price of bodies is almost the same, but I can turn FF on sony any time and use it for photography or low light with other lens. So the question is apsc moded a7iv video quality comparable to XH2s, what do you think about it?

The banding is something I’ve seen in lowlight footage on the a7v too, interesting that the Fuji doesn’t have any.
Would it have something to do with the stacked sensor?
You should look at it using Capture One. With my X-H2S I found the raw conversion was not sharp at all. I haven't done noise tests of the two programs yet.
I hear capture one is better processing Fuji raws.. but LR has ai features like masking and what nots to make it easier on my workflow. I tried c1 for a week and I was not comfortable with the workflow

Great comparison video. The ISO button can now be bypassed all together, you can assign directly a d pad buttons up/down or dial wheel no need to even touch that annoying top iso button 👍

If I could afford either of these, I'd probably go for the Fuji for video specs and good enough video. Plus I really like the always-on shoulder display. That seems like a real clutch feature for a forgetful person like me that I could just at a glance see if it needs a charge or card swap.
Since I can't afford these, I'll be going for the Lumix s5 lol

Really great video mate! I keep thinking about jumping to full-frame because I mainly shoot concerts (right now on an 800D with a sigma 18-35 // 50-100). But I'm so in love with my Sigma lenses that I'm considering staying APS-C and getting the Fuji XH2S :D

@@Iamtongue oh yeah, I think I made my mind up! :D now I just have to figure out if Topaz Denoise is working for the Fuji raw files. I tried with some and it doesn’t seem to be working. (I shoot in pretty low light so some noise is unavoidable)
The low light results are interesting. It looks like the Sony noise reduction is increasingly stronger starting at ISO 3200.
I think that’s the dual native iso kicking in.

Those colours were crazy coming out of the XH2S. Did you grade them? Or was it a film simulation? FLOG2?
The videos I graded yea. Some of them were from a conversion lut pack and some I graded with filmconvert

I haven't done any concert stuff. But I remember using the AF for both cameras in the dark. And it was around -2EV and both worked well in that situation.

Why are you looking for noise in the midtones and highlights area? You should be looking at the shadows area, easier to spot the noise.

I want a stacked sensor on the XT5! I prefer the retro dials versus the XH2S.
I wonder if they would make a fujifilm xt5-s variant.. I don’t think they would just keep that sensor into the XH2s body alone.

For stills I would buy the Sony, but I would probably go with a used a7riv or a7iii instead of an a7iv. If I was interested in video, I would go with the Fuji. Both cameras are amazing though and can do anything.
After owning both… I give it to the X-H2s is superior in all fronts for filmmakers even coming almost close to beat FX3, the only thing I can think anyone would be biased towards the A7iv is if you want Full frame but gotta deal with crops, bad battery life vs other Sonys. Ill take a better sensor all day X-H2s is king at the $2k range imo.

Have you taken the A7iv out in the elements? How good is that “weather sealing” really? I only ask because I find myself wanting to purchase the A7iv but I’m concerned about the build quality of the Sony. I don’t wanna worry constantly about being out in some rain or snow. There’s no doubt about Sony image quality 👌🏼
I’ve used it once in a mild snow storm.. it held up nice.
To give you some context it was probably -10 degree C and I believe it was snow squalls…

On the image comparison, you were comparing the embedded preview which could be a jpg with noise reduction, applied for the Sony so not the same base comparison.

Sony lens options have matured, that’s true. But the native prices of the Sony is insane
also true... but the price for Fuji lenses are creeping up there
Third party lenses for Fuji are rolling out with regularity now also. And they aren’t new lens designs… they are proven winners from solid manufacturers, with Sigma being a big deal for me personally (1.4 trio, 18-50 f2.8).
I agree @ Enigmatic Reverie. I would love to have a full frame Sony camera but their lens cost is insane if you are new to their ecosystem.
I'm surprised by your results with the A7iv AF. I got a bunch of misses so I tested it on people running. Cloudy conditions, 70 200 GM2 at f2.8 or f3.2. Only 30% of the pics were properly focused while tracking worked fine.
Besides, you should mention that 10 FPS is only possible with compressed with loss (or lower) format AND EVF refresh rate at 10 FPS with black out. You will most probably lose your subject.
I've heard bad things about the autofocus on the 70-200 GM, apparently the GM ii is way better.
@@martinruiz398 The optical quality of the 70-200 GM II is stunning. I have experienced it on static subjects. But the A7iv struggles for focusing on moving subjects.
Get a better lens.

What I find most interesting here is the highlight roll off. Notice @14:21 the light that is positioned to the right of the subject does not roll off in a natural way in the Sony image. It has a harsh blue border around it. Also notice the spill onto the desk. These nuances are what separates a OK image from a great image. The Fujifilm has a far superior image and much better image processing.
Talking about noise, the FujiFilm has noise, sure, but none of the ugly confetti color noise that most cameras suffer from. The XH2S noise looks organic… film like. The Sony instead favors noise reduction, which crushes detail. It’s a clear win for the Fujifilm camera.
Now if only Fujifilm would make a cinema variant, with removable EVF… just use the one from the GFX100 II, it’s excellent. Add a built in fan… built in eVND and internal BRaw… then we are off to the races.
AS a sony shooter i will say FUJI had it in the video AF test, and the noise at higher iso and how the image was rendering looked very very nice on the Fuji, maybe organic and has life compared to digital etc on the A7IV, I being old school actually prefer a little bit of texture, grit or grain in the image rather than just clean and bland... also the banding using LED on the A7IV, solved on the Fuji, but it also a non-issue on my A9II LOL. I would be happy to use files from the fuji at 12800 iso. Im very tempted to go back to Fuji now the XH2S has come along and the new line of LM fuji lenses. Great review 🙂

I disagree. Only that initial focus was Fuji faster. After that Sony was focused in immediately, while Fuji was not. And I’m a Fuji shooter. Not sure how much longer. I wanted Fuji to be better because I have then lenses, but it’s not.
@@JLStreetDoc i hear your pain.. had both the XH2 and XH2s on loan for two weeks, the XH2s is defo faster at acquiring focus than my A9ll and almost more sensitive in low light. stunning camera all be told. if it did not have that stupid flippy screen i would for sure have one, paired with the new line of lenses it was really a pleasure to use. XH2 was great image quality, and the way it rendered the images was 1st class, again the screen was an issue and wasn't keen on the dampened feeling shutter release compared to the 2s but as a combo, they would be fantastic... but the screen for me is a deal breaker, makes things off center for my dim wit brain when using waist level etc and de stabilizes the left of the camera to hold also gives a less discreet visual to the client when want to be invisible, XT5 well I've had xt1,2 and 3 and never liked the dials so don't think that is on the cards although it does have a tilt screen LOL. what i decided to do to shrink my sony gear, removed the grip from the A9ll and sold it, sold all my GM glass bar the 16-35 as need that for a client, purchased the Batis range of lenses now have a smaller setup and lenses with character, i was never a fan of the huge GM glass and its surgical, clinical sharpness. forgive my waffling on...LOL also sold my A7rIV and now to replace either with a A7IV or do i bite the bullet and get the XT5 and a 33mm f1.4.. ermmmm ??

But I'm struggling with the doubt, a7iv, the upcoming a7cii or xh2s - I love the colors on Fuji, but I do much jobs in low light situations and I have E-Mount glasses... Difficult choice...
@@Pontcher I ditched all my Sony gear now, went with an Xh2s and an XH2 and they are great, XH2s is almost on par high iso as my A9ll was and pair with the primes and shoot maybe 1 stop wider and its awesome, glass is amazing, 18, 23, 33 and new 56 are awesome. not over-keen on the flippy screen and still lack of glowing permanent AF point so at times it gets lost but I'm sure eventually they will add this.
Worth adding that longer lens on full frame are huge… for me too big.
i get the weight and size is a factor for some folks...
Why I feel the XH2 has better response in auto focusing looking at your test footage? My eyes are a little unconventional, I guess. Or were the labels mixed up?

In my opinion, the comparison is not fair. I owned both, though, in video spec fujifilm wins, but in your colour comparison, my Sony look sharper and noise free in iso 2800.
I don't know how you got that plastic colour for Sony in low light comparison.
The autofocus problem in the xh2s video caused by the mechanics in fuji lenses,
Try using some of fuji newer lenses like the 33mm it's so much better in autofocus and never stutter
you right.
Tamron 17-70 f2.8 with image stabilization is fantastic on the XH2s

Too bad what’s on paper isn’t reality.
If you’re worried about lens choice for 'serious' video, Fuji has the T2.9 lenses. An 18-55 and a 50-135 dedicated cine lenses.
Well that argument can be used for any system that has cine lens option lol…Why can’t it be a fair even comparision.. ? Sony e mount lenses made their lenses with good autofocusing for video.. that’s all I’m saying 🫡
It wouldn't be a good investment, paying so much money for good cine lenses to be locked into a system without cinema cameras. In fact, my local rental shops don't even carry it in X-mount. Those lenses only exist in RF or E mount where I live. When Fujifilm comes out with their own compressed internal RAW like BRAW, then maybe. But until then...

@@Iamtongue ... most of Fujifilm's fast prime lenses have been updated with both linear motors and weather-sealing(18/f1.4, 23/f1.4, 33/f1.4, etc.), but the new 56/f1.2 should have included a linear motor as well.
Most of Fujifilm's earliest lenses are not so suitable for video work, but some of Sony's early EF lenses struggle too. At this point it should be well-known which lenses can cover you for video usage.
The Sony looks kind of soft; like a noise reduction is applied by the cam, 🤔

I think it's the embedded preview. Sony is viewing JPEG, Fuji is viewing RAW. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Should’ve concluded the winner after 6k, ProRes, and BRaw capabilities. To me that’s a clear winner. And just to sprinkle on…Fuji Lenses are far more affordable (smaller & lighter) and it’s good to have Viltrox and other third party companies making the ecosystem even more affordable.
You right. I think both are good in their own right and in terms of specs the Fuji wins.
Clear winner is hard to be given. If gauging by pure features then yes the fuji win except for not being full frame, not having as good low light, and less depth of field capabilities. But things are not that simple. For example, which as more heat, a 1Kg object at temperature of 500 degrees or a 1000 kg object at a temperature of 100 degrees. By temperature alone, one would say the 1 kg object, but there clear answer is the 1000 kg object, though only the 1 kg object could burn use by the process of quick heat transfer upon touching it.
That analogy is this; while on paper the fujifilm wins; there is something to having such a LARGE Lens lineup. Having access to Sony G, G-master lens, Zeiss lens, Tamron, Sigma, Samyang lens; as well as some smaller obscure ones like viltrox, Meike, Mitakon are invaluable. Even better is Voigtlander; they have some wonderful lenses, including their APO lanthan lens at 35mm, 50mm, 65mm, 110mmi are some of the highest rated lens in the industry. Voigtlander has a few X-mount lens; but no where near the quality or volume that they produce on Sony.
Then there is also Longevity. As smartphone camera systems and lenses continue to mature; it will continue to eat up more and more of the cheaper linueup of cameras; companies like apple make processors that are far, far more powerful than any processors available on cameras and thus their ability to tap into computational photography is miles ahead and will continue to be miles ahead, especially todays times when AI is blowing up all over the place (including in interchangeable lens cameras like the A7R5). With that said; just like the point and shoot cameras died out; where will the smaller camera companies be in 5-10years (OM system, Fuji, Pentax, Panasonic). Sony and Canon will no doubt survive, but Fuji? I believe so; as I still think it will take longer (if ever) for smart phones to catch up to APSC, and Medium Format will always be a halo product that phones won't match and that niche will still be around (so hassleblad and gFX will have a market). What i'm trying to say is there may be a benefit to go with Sony or Canon due to the size/stability of their company.

Hi. Helpful review. My main feedback would be no need to drop the f-bomb in a camera review. I was watching on my TV and my kids are in the room and they looked at me! I always tell them to save the swearing for when you bash your head on something, not a camera channel!

I think that Fuji focus faster and keeps it on. I reckon that focus switching speed at fuji is at the fastest setting and as such it focus the background very fast and when you come back in frame it tries to focus again in contrast with Sony which it focus the background much slower and when you come back on frame it takes less time to focus. I see an advantage of Sony in close distance focus.

1 more difference. Since sony being full frame, it's lenses even 3rd party ones are expensive . With xh2s you can get more lenses with your budget which is a huge win in my opinion. Example With price Sigma 35 mm 1.2 Dg Dn art for sony , I can buy 2 lenses for fuji i.e. Sigma 18-50mm 2.8g and viltrox 27 mm 1.2g

Sony is the winner... for now. And not because of image quality or even autofocus, but because of user experiance, menus and lenses. Doesnt matter how good your camera is if you cant use it fast and doesnt feel intuitive. BUT I feel the next iterration of Fuji, like XH3s, especially if we get good lenses by then, could be a game changer.

@mcsnapples '+14 stops of dynamic range?' can you please let me know where you found this information? I can't seem to find any info on the Fuji DR numbers. I'm debating between going for a Sony or waiting for the X-Pro4 (which should have the same sensor as the XH2s) and Dynamic Range is at the top of my wish list. If it really is that good I will wait for the next Fuji camera.

Sorry but Fuji color is awful. Always too much magenta. Too warm. Sony color is pretty bad, sure, but Fuji is not the cure. Yes, some film simulations look cool, it's got a style, but absolutely not accurate and very often ugly. In fact, I would rank Fuji dead last in color, Sony second to last.
The best color to me is always Panasonic full frame.
Then next is probably Nikon, a bit too sharp, constrasty and overly saturated, yes, but for anything other than portraits, it produces fairly eye catching results.
Then Canon is probably best for skin tone. It's got a magenta tint, and not even subtle either, but Canon's magenta is just so much more tastefully done than Fuji, which is like piling on the magenta paint bucket.

Which Canon, Sony, Fuji, Nikons are you talking about? It is impossible to generalize since, for example, the Canon R line has many models and some of them look great and some have gross tints/white balance whatever out of the box. They hardly get it right across ALL models and ALL price ranges. Same for Sony, same for Nikon. Given that Fuji tends to use the same sensor across model lines, well, I guess you like it or you don’t-but less variation in image quality. In any case it is pretty easy to correct tints and white balances. So maybe pick the features you want/need and move on?
@matth8816 while each camera may differ a bit and custom white balance may resolve some of the difference, each brand does have a systematic bias in how they interpret sensor data in color. Canon and Fuji generally has more magenta, with Fuji a bit overboard and canon slightly less. Sony is famous for the yellowish green and Nikon a bit yellow. That is the reason some stick to Canon for skin tone and there are die hard Fuji fans.
If Sony would give us a full frame in a Fuji body, I d be all over it. Lol!
