we need a bluetooth audiophile headphone ranking!!
Hi Joshua,
I repeated your test after seeing this video. I bought both version of the headphone as I was looking for a closed back headphone so to not always bother my wife when I’m listening to my open backs.
First of all, the headphones really are excellent for the price. They don’t come close to my 450 open back headphones, but they blow everything out of the water that I have experienced in this price bracket.
Second, I have 17 years experience recording and mixing audio. I could not detect any difference between the two headphones. Using a splitter cable connecting both headphones to the same amp, trying them on two different amps to see if the amp could cause the difference in how they sound and listening to various songs I’m very familiar with,. I have to say, in a blind test, I would not be able to tell the headphones apart.
This can mean a couple things:
1. You have better developed ears.
2. I’m not listening to the right material, I wonder if you could send me the files you used for this test.
3. You had a defective unit/ maybe they were made in a different factories.
4. You regular k361 is better then my regular k361 and I’m listening to two headphones that sound like your Bluetooth version.
5. Something I did not think of.
Well, I hope this comment reaches you and would love for a reply. Thanks for pointing me into the direction of this headphone to begin with. I will be keeping my Bluetooth version!
bump
Could be that you actually plugged the headphones into an amp thats why they sound similar. I believe he is reviewing it based on its wireless listening vs the ones that are suppose to be plugged in
@@noahmoussaoui7550 thank you for your reply. In my testing I did review wireless vs wired and I also wired the wireless. So I checked both.
My recommendation is for everyone to order both and see for yourself, don’t knock the Bluetooth version until you have tried it. It works great for me!
@@noahmoussaoui7550 2:24 - 2:42 are you sure you watched this video?
This video was a little unclear, but all the downsides he mentions seems to be toward the wireless mode
Thank you Josh for the warning and good review. I think I'll just get myself maybe a Qudelix 5k for Bluetooth use with my over-ears and iems.
Damn. Had high hopes there. So many near misses in the BT space.
Thank you for being honest. Wish more reviewer were. 👍🏻
Frankly, I'm a little confused. Zeos loves this headphone, it's a K361 with Bluetooth, has no more complaints that he did with the standard K361.
You mostly complain about the compression for Bluetooth ruining the sound. Well... yeah. That's bluetooth. But you also complain about the compression when plugged in with the cable. What? How? It's playing through a physical connection, there will be no compression. Did you have it plugged in and connected to Bluetooth at the same time, and therefore it was actually playing through Bluetooth?
Maybe I'm hearing you wrong, idk. But from other reviews, these seem like a solid option to have K361s that you can also take on the go easily if needed.
Josh, nice hoodie!
How would you compare the AKG K361BT (in wired mode) to the Audio Technica ATH-M20x if they were available at the same price (not an audiophile, but am looking for good sound reproduction)? Would the ATs sound better for listening to music?
Nice honest review. Thx.
Wired one definitely has a better sound profile but this serves its purpose. Pretty interesting wireless headphone for its price.
Off topic. Sorry. Can I make the sennheiser hd 560s to work good with Series X? Do I HAVE to have an amp to beat my Hyper xcloud alpha?
And if I need an amp, which will work? I'm sittning 2 meters from the tv so a long cord is needed if I must have an amp instead of just plugging into the controller.
Thanks for not being a hype beast
In fairness i did hype the shit out of the regular k361
@@JoshuaValour Yeah but it was worth it ;)
@@JoshuaValour bah, we'll forgive you
Good video. Have you tested the Austrian Audio Hi-X25bt by former AKG employees?
How about a focal closed back round up? Elegia, celestee, and stellia compared
Give a suggestion for the bluetooth dongle
How does this sound when plugged in with the wire? Is it better than bluetooth mode?
review the Singxer Sa-1 please
Have you tried Grado GW100 v2?
Short and sweet
Yes. I love those and am happy with them but I'd still love to see his review.
Please please compare this one with Momentum 4.
I have a blutooth dongle, FiiO BTR5, will this have any effect on sound quality if used with the wired AKG 361?
Some background:
DMS in one of his videos said something about blutooth headphones such as the Sony 1000XM series, Bose NC 700, and AirPods Max, are only as good as $100 wired headphones (I might be wrong on the quote). Which is why I have been looking at wired closed-back headsets to replace my current ones that have broken joints, worn down ear pads, and a broken blutooth that screech when used. My WH-H910N is taped up together, and is still working with a 3.5 mm cable, so I am taking my time looking for a replacement that I can at least change the earpads and that will be durable.
90% of sound depends on the headphones
a good DAC just improves upon your headphones
You mentioned k361 are v shaped I'm looking for something truly neutral closed back under $150. Please help!
How would you compare these with the Soundcore Life Q30? I understand the Q35 is also being released, possibly even today.
Assuming the Q30 is like most other Soundcore headphones, the K361-BT is going to be far more detailed but with much less bass. The bass response will be far more precise though. If you like bass, stick with the Q30, but if you want far more detail, the K361-BT might be for you. Keep in mind while I do have the K361-BT, I'm assuming the sound of the Q30 based on my experiance with other Soundcore headphones that I've heard/owned. Also, the K361-BT does not have ANC like the Q30, and uses micro-usb, not usb C.
@@Girgburg Thanks for the response. That's sort of what I figured. Glad to have confirmation that I'm on the right train of thought.
@@sockhopsinger get the q30, dont believe that guy. q30 with oluvs eq is far better
I used them for a year and it broke I really miss it :/ it is an awesome sounding headphone but I don't recommend to use it outside much. It's build quality is not very good but totally enough for indoor usage.
SteelSeries Arctic 3 with BT definitely competes
Waiting for the Beyerdynamic dt770 pro review one day haha. It's the only pair of "audiophile" headphones I own so getting your opinion on them I think would be awesome so i know what to get next.
What do you think a good bluetooth headphone between this one and the price of the Drop Panda or Sennheiser Momentum 3
Drop panda. But that's a really wierd comparison considering the vast price differences
@@karenlewis4228 that's why I asked between the price of the AKG and the Panda/3. Is there something in the middle between than $100 for the AKG and dropping $400 on the Panda.
@@JohnScheppler The Sony XM4's routinely go on sale for $250-300, against the listed price of $350 I think. At 250-300, those are easily the best bluetooth headphones in that range.
this isn't but my problem with high-end gear is... well, they can't even put a name properly, I don't know about the rest
What is the lowest priced BT headphone you would give a high recommendation for? You said at the $100 range you don't have a clear cut recommendation but what about $150 or $200?
You can start to find amazon refurbished (warehouse) Sony WH1000XM3s for under $200 if you have some luck.
Actually in Europe I managed to get one rated "very good" for 160€ and it was like new. A real deal in my opinion.
The AKG N700NCM2 is pretty great for around $150. It actually sounds good in BT since it was perpose built for it and not an afterthought like the bluetooth K361 were. Also has ANC and usb C charging. It is a bit bass heavy, so that could be a good or bad thing depending on your tastes.
I really hope the audience doesn't misinterpret the takeaway from this review as that bluetooth butchered the K361. Having run relatively high end studio monitors off my DAC via bluetooth, I can't discern the difference vs. a wired connection. And we already have several bluetooth headphones that sound dramatically better than the K361 wired.
So what Bluetooth Headphones do you recommend at this price?
@@DerechteWutz I don't own but anything at this price range, sorry. I have the B&W PX7, B&O HX, and B&O Portal along with a few wireless buds
I'm curious whether using the bt version wired would get audio quality anywhere closer to the wired version
He said no
whats even the point of BT headphones at that point
@@samarthbhat7889 extra weight?
@@iz723 when? He must have said in a 4 second blip because I watched the whole thing and never heard him mention it
@@trellusg 2:38
So which bt headphones would you recommend at this price?
1/4th of Beats Studio
@@samarthbhat7889 ha ha ha 😂
Sony WH-900n if you can find them at the price
So it seems like they just slapped in the cheapest BT implementation they could? It's the same MSRP as the wired K361, so I suppose that must be the case. Maybe they could have added at least a few dollars to the price which would be fine for a BT version...it is strange that it's not even as good wired though.
The BT version used to be around $150 when it first released, but has since gone down to match the non bluetooth price. But I agree, they spent jack all on the Bluetooth implimentation and it shows sadly. But I've since switched out my K361-BT for a K371 non bluetooth model, and I love it.
@@Girgburg Ok well even then that's a $20 retail price BT implementation....bound to be awful.
It's so weird, nowadays it's almost more difficult to put together a signal chain that cannot get an adequate signal to an easy to drive headphone like the K361, yet so many companies fail when it comes to Bluetooth implementations.
Can you look at AKG K371-BT? From what I've tested, it's much better choice in terms of sound, but I didn't compared them with non BT versions
IIRC, it uses the same bluetooth chip as the K361-BT, so it'll probably have the same issues.
I really don't understand why so many bluetooth headphones are still so mediocre, nowadays you can easily put together a tiny and perfectly fine dac/amp solution for a few dollars and most reasonable bluetooth implementations should easily have enough bandwidth to transfer a good digital audio signal.
Especially with headphones that are as easy to drive as the K361s it should be almost impossible to make them sound bad with any halfway reasonable semi modern parts. You basically have to go out of your way to custom built a source that would make them sound noticeably worse than the wired counterpart.
Probably power

@@TheGogoku yeah. I see I could have been clearer. My bad.
@@evanandrews no worries, I read your comment too quickly so it's my bad as well.
So.... you didn’t address whether the BT variant, when wired, sounds identical to the wired-only 😅
When wired they sound the same. They use the same drivers and build.
I thought the same before I got M50X BT, but not only they sound different in wired/BT mode, also different from normal M50X. So I wouldn't be surprised if the K361 sounded different in wired/BT mode.
For under 100$ AKG K845BT is still the king.
That headphone is 300$ now what? Was it under 100 2 years ago??
Unless you need ANC, bluetooth headphones seem like a bad deal. It is adding something to a headphone that will degrade in as little as 2 to 3 years or develop a fault. Better to use a bluetooth dac/amp with whatever headphone you like. If you can deal with a short run of cable from a shirt pocket or collar to the headphone it is a great option.
Why does it degrade quicker?
I ordered the bt, the non bt one costs more here lol
Please explain this position.
Nah, I don't bother with ANC but dealing with wires is such a pain. It's nice to just be free to move around at any given moment anywhere you want.
So basically it's really similar to ATH-M50X concept
no difference between wired / bt
I have the M50X BT, and there are a few issues with it. The R ch has white noise in BT mode. In wired mode the tonal quality is very different (worse) than in BT, bass is boomy, a huge suck out in lower mids (most likely because the space behind the driver is taken by battery, electronics). Also it can only be paired with ONE device. Battery life is very good.
Comparing with regular M50X it's not the headphones most people know.
@@pliedtka that's the case with most BT models. they all sounds worse when wired, so if you're buying BT headphones you should listen it in BT mode
What about anker q30?
I knew it! :/
Only heard the regular K371, got the K361-bt because more neutral FR, and couldn't believe that that was the sound of the K361 that the reviewer space lauded so much
Now off to put that thing on eBay lol
i had the same problem, i orderd the 361 and 371 a year back. in my opinion, the 371 has much higher end sound. but the treble was a too pronounced. so i modded them and put som cut out paper towels in them and now they sound fine.
@@aladinz88 so you had both regular non BT versions of those and you found the K371 to sound more refined? (Like other than it simply having more bass)
@@subjecttochange9320 yes that is very correct. but the treble is on some points to peaky for me personaly. So i tuned it a bit down. But both compared, the 361 sounded more muddy and not so defined over the complete frequenzy range if i remember correctly. so i kept the 371. It was only a few bucks more...
To listen to music , podcast , movies.......to enjoy the sound and not so much "analyze" the sound, which headphone is better and how much considering difference in price:
AKG K361 (wired) vs Sennheiser HD560s or Sennheiser HD599 ( I know the Sennheisers are slightly different but for MY needs I will suppose they are kind of the same in terms of quality of sound) . Thanks to whoever can help me out answering my question. Thank to @Joshua Valour for your content.
if drop dot com can deliver to you, i would reccomend you HD58X. They sound natural and layed back. they are a jack of all trades for the price
@@aladinz88 Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I don`t live in USA so Drop is out of the question, besides for many reasons I have made my mind on the models I mentioned.
My pick for non-analytical listening would probably be the HD 599. I wouldn't really favour the AKGs unless you can benefit from a closed back or want the most bass (out of these 3), having heard them a few times in a store and owning the K371s I think they compare pretty unfavourably to the Sennheisers in most other categories, and being closed backs they have the worst soundstage and imaging out of the three, although not by as much you'd think the Sennheisers are fairly intimate for open backs.
Don't get me wrong the AKGs are by no means bad, in fact I think they are pretty solid for closed backs in their price range, but I also think the Sennheiser's are pretty damn good value and they are a significantly more expensive, so they have a bit of an advantage in that regard.
Also the K361s and K371s used to have massive QC issues, leading to inconsistent sound between pairs and the headphones falling apart at the hinges, this might very well be something that has been solved in the meantime but it's something to keep in mind.
Between the Sennheisers the 560s are probably gonna be the most detailed and they should have better bass extension than the 599s, to my ears they're definitely the most analytical and "boring" out of the three. The HD 599s have a bit more mid bass and have an overall warmer, more laid back and arguably more fun sound signature, they are bit muddier than the 560s but not by that much and they are great allrounders. I own the HD 599 but have only listened to the HD 560 in a store, so take that with a grain of salt.
I don't think you would be disappointed with any of them.
@@Antares-dw9iv Thanks. I worry because most reviews seem to focus on how accurate and "flat" the headphones are, while my intention is to listen to music , not as a producer or mixer but as a regular listener. I am surprised how much reviews focus on those virtues and not in pleasing experience. After all we are more regular listeners than producers and mixers looking for that cough in the background. Thank you for you opinion, I havent made my mind , but I lean towards the AKGs for price and closedness ( not to leak sound). I just wonder how much more pleasing the Sennheiser are if they are at all.....
@@herroglop7411 The thing audio is extremely subjective and you might very well end up enjoying the AKGs more. I think that's why reviews mainly focus on clarity and providing a flat response because everything that strays from that is mainly personal preference and can't really be quantified on an objective level.
But honestly really I wouldn't sweat it too much, I would gladly daily drive all of the three headhpones you listed and none of them sound anything close to bad. They don't have massively bloated bass or huge treble peaks that could annoy you and all of them are pretty comfortable and reasonably well built.
Is the problem that the driver is changed or are the electronics bad. Maybe the original version being driven by much better electronics is why they sound better.
Lol the original (wired) ones shouldn't have any electronics in it lol, they're completely passive
@@Summer-xu8qu Obviously the original headphones are passive and if the 2 sound different and cost the same is the cheap electronics they crammed in with the original driver or did they change the driver. Either would affect the sound I just wanted to know which or both.

Thanks for the review. How do they sound when you use the wire? Do they sound the same as the non-BT version? This could be a good option for work when you use them as BT headset for calls and then listen to music with wire.
The Bluetooth and non-Bluetooth K361 do sound the same plugged in, but If you have good ears you can notice the diffrence between them when in bluetooth mode. I could bearly notice, but I probably have hearing damage from druming in my highschool years with no hearing protection. Also, the mic on it is not that great, picks up a lot of background noise. I can easily recomend the non-bluetooth version of the K361 and its big brother the K371, but not the bluetooth ones. But since the Bluetooth version of the K361 is the same price as the non-bluetooth one, you might as well go for it for the convinence factor of bluetooth.
