In my experience it's not recessed enough to hurt female vocals, they simply sound like they are placed farther back in the soundstage, which for many is good!... I could see for someone who likes orchestras and music with large amount of instruments with low or no vocals it can be weird to have a tones sound like they are essentially being directed away from you.... For me I wouldn't mind either way one bit, if it were filled in I might like it more, it simply isn't a dealbreaker!

Thanks for sharing your results with the pad change. I don't have an LCD-X, but I do have an LCD-2C. I compared the two using oratory1990's measurements on Reddit and discovered that the 2C were closer to the X than probably any other Audeze. Cross-referencing your results with those graphs, I decided to take a shot and ordered the new pads. What I got were noticeable improvements across most of the frequency range! I'm glad I can write this directly to the person who supplied those initial results as I have you to thank for the improvements in my headphone.

I’m currently testing the LCD-X and the Focal Clear.
    Focal Clear:
Nice balanced frequency response, except for the bass, which is just a bit boomy.
Mids and highs are just the right amount.
    LDC-X:
This thing has the “perfect flat” low end for my taste. It’s extended and punchy, without being boomy.
Mids and highs are nicely present and detailed, but not as balanced as the Focals.
I have Sonarworks Reference 4, but neither of them require the use of EQ.
LCD-X sounds more natural to me.
The soundstage is not huge, but it sounds right, similar to my Neumann studio monitors.
The Focals are like an “audio telescope”. All instruments sound very close, with the lead vocal inside your head.
Both are really good headphones. I’m more inclined to keep the LCD-X, but it’s a hard decision.

Having already owned the Focal Clear, the next one I am looking to get is a pre-owned LCD-X. Your comparison is very helpful and I think affirms my decision to get the LCD-X for orchestral and jazz music which I think would benefit from better separation and detail retrieval than the Clear. I enjoy the Clear for vocal driven music as it is very intimate. I am looking forward to comparing the bass between the two. I am currently using Schiit Vali 2+ which pairs nicely with the Clear - it sounds like the LCD-X is not too fussy about amp pairing but would be interesting to see how it performs with hybrid tube amps.

  • @thehawk05

I had the 2C for a month. I really enjoyed it. Great bass impact, mids (notably vocals) are excellent and I enjoyed the warmer, toned down highs......especially for listening to metal music at louder volumes as MANY of those recordings tend to be shall we say “hot” in the upper treble and get fatiguing quickly. The 2C is perfect for that kind of scenario. I also found the vocals.....particularly male vocals to sound really good and visceral. It also does a decent job of conveying soundstage width although the placement and panning has some dead spots.
So why did I get rid of it?
The highs are too recessed IMO......even for a treble sensitive person like myself. On recordings I’m very familiar with a lot of nuances and details seemed buried in the mix or in many cases......almost inaudible. I also felt on some female voices it made them sound on the congested/nasally side. I could go on about other things but bottom line, Joshua’s views on the LCD-X (pre 2021 revisions) peaked my interest to try it. So thanks to Amazon I sent the 2C back before my 30days were up and ordered the LCD-X from Adorama (who also provides 30 day, no questions asked returns) I was unaware at the time of purchase but mine were built in late 2020 and are the latest revised versions.
After only had one day with them they were keepers for me. I like them a lot more than the 2C. The 2C sounds wider and gives the impression of stronger bass but the X is better everywhere. As Joshua has noted in his earlier review......the X may not seem to have has much bass slam as the 2C but how it does the bass is superior. It reaches lower, it’s faster, tighter and you can hear the details and textures in the bass way better. The 2C for lack of better description sounds a little “one note-ish” in how it delivers bass......a bit rumbly and loose sounding. Still fun and enjoyable but definitely less refined.
Mids are even sounding to me and vocals sound excellent. The 2C is more present vocal wise but can seem a tad shouty on some recordings. The X never sounds that way. I find female vocals sound more natural as well thanks to the extra treble and air the X has over the 2C.
Treble wise......definitely brighter than the 2C but it’s done in such a nice way. As mentioned, I’m treble sensitive and even at elevated volume levels the highs are just bright enough but still warm enough to not cause fatigue for me. The best part though.....all those subtle details, nuances or whatever you want to call them are there that were often missing on the 2C and placement throughout the soundstage is much easier to decipher.
If you watch this and Joshua’s other LCD-X videos I think he’s done a terrific job of conveying what to expect with it. I based my X purchase on his pre 2021 impressions and I’m glad I did as the X is my go to when I want to sit back and relax on a Friday night with a drink and some tunes. I never thought I’d ever spend this kind of money on a headphone (Creator edition is $1900 here in Canada after taxes) but I’m very happy with them......for me and my tastes the X make me do what any good headphone should do for you......make you want to sit back and simply enjoy your music rather than some headphones that often rear up your OCD to analyze and be annoyed at what they do wrong for you. I still think the 2C is a really great headphone and an excellent entry point for the LCD line. I still may add it to my arsenal in the future as I think it’s different enough from its bigger brother to warrant owning it.....notably for those “treble gone wild” rock and metal albums in my collection and especially when I do those brief “listen at stupid volume level” sessions of those albums.
Best advice I can offer is if you decide to try Audeze or any high end headphone for that matter try and get it from a vendor that has a 30day return if you don’t like them. Hearing is a very subjective thing because ear canal shapes, hearing loss/sensitivity, ear pad interaction with your ears/head all play a large role in how a headphone will sound for you.......case in point why you’ll read so many varying views on the same model headphone. I trust Joshua’s views because he has tested several headphones I already own and enjoy and his impressions mimic my own very closely so I think it’s safe to say we hear music quite similar.
Lastly: The LCD-X pairs well with just about anything.......I’ve used my iPhone, my iPad, my A/V receiver, THX 789 and most recently a Flux FA-12S........it sounds great out of all them......especially the Class A Flux amp

Maybe sometimes companies don't really wanna be 100% transparent about some of the revisions and changes they make due to parts or material shortages where they might probably not be making things better, but still, even that aside, revisions like the recent 2020/2021 thing by Audeze are definitely intended to make things better so I don't really see why companies don't disclose what they did.

I recently bought some 2021 model LCD-X. Re: EQ, I think it comes down to use case. As I understand it, they’re pretty popular with mix engineers, and I can see why: without EQ they have the sort of clear, revealing, but flat and sober sound one looks for when mixing. However, if you’re looking to simply listen for enjoyment, they do benefit from some hyping up. From that POV, I’m not sure their tonal balance is necessarily a weak point: it gives you options. Flat-response headphones for mixing tend to sound pretty dead and unexciting (intentionally so), and the LCD-X is a sort of midpoint between headphones for mixing and listening.

I've been pretty happy with my LCD-1, but I've always wondered if there's a big-brother equivalent (better soundstage, impact, etc) for listening to metal 95+% of the time. Sounds like I need to go listen to a pair of the new 2021 LCD-X. Planars do seem to do really fast bass nicely (i.e. technical death metal), so I'd be pretty picky in that area. If headphones are too forward in the mids / upper range I feel like they overly accentuate the lead guitars or make some of the cymbals too sharp to listen to in an extended fashion.

Got rid of my 2020 LCD-X yesterday. Uninstalled reveal+ on my computer. I feel that was a relief. LCD-X was such a burden just collecting dust on my stand and have to turn on reveal+ to get a more natural sound. I'm glad I didn't pay full retail price for it and only lost $100 when it was sold. To me 2020 version bass lacks of dynamic at least mine didn't kick me in the face and mids sounds so compressed like everyone just had a flu and the treble just sharp may be it's detailed treble but I just want to eq it so bad.

@@user-mm6dn9mx4z LCD X 2021 just sounds more natural to my ears than the Clears. The Clears is intimate playing directly into my ears while the LCD X makes me feel like I am listening from a natural close distance.
The punchy bass feels more present in the Clears which I like but the LCD X has enough slam and the bass seems more extended. The trade off seems worth it.
If I was mixing/producing I would actually choose the Clears for that. They just sound so accurate and.. clear.
For fun laid back entertainment purposes, the LCD X.
I still need to EQ the LCD X to reduce the treble peak. I EQ'd the Clears treble peak too but I could listen to the Clears with out doing it as well.
As for build and comfort. They are both fantastic in their own ways. The weight of the LCD X does not bother me and it isn't fatiguing to me. With that said, when I pop on the Clears right after it's a night and day difference in that the Clears feel like nothing on my head and my ears definitely feel airy and cooler. Build wise, the LCD X will age better with the black leather pads/headband and all black exterior. Even if it ends up getting scratched or dented the LCD X will still look good but with patina. The Clears feel and look more luxury but it will certainly not age gracefully.
Both headphones are incredible and I would be completely happy with either of them. I just prefer the LCD X more.
