Hope this helps someone:
The K371 has a much louder volume than the dt 770 (32 ohms) when plugging into standard mobile devices and laptops with a much punchier bass. You can crank up even more power by adding a portable DAC on both but would not need it in my personal opinion for normal day to day listening.
very helpful!
114dB SPL/V on the AKG K371 vs. 96dB SPL/V on the Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro. Yeah, the K371 are crazy sensitive for over-ear headphones are really don't need much power to get insanely loud. On my HiBy R3 Pro Saber DAP I could barely use 30% volume on single-ended output before it was too loud to listen to. Even the output from my Samsung Note 9 was more than sufficient to power them to unlistenable levels of output volume.
Another problem with DT 770 is they distort at higher volumes and it gets only worse with time, unfortunately.
@@mertonnephakethis isn't a popular opinion concerning the 770s tho so it might just be a personal issue
I think your review gonna make me pull the trigger on these! Keep up the good work Chrono - nice to have you part of the team!
Thanks for checking the video out! And I highly recommend these, very enjoyable pair of headphones :D
For anyone interested in playing with eq try the one below. It may look like some big changes but it really isn't. It oddly removes some of the grain and gives vocals a more natural sound. They get a touch more body and lose that edge in consonants. It also gives the treble some more air and helps horns stand out a bit more even though it almost sounds like the level of horns are lowered just a touch. Stock I notice some horns get lost in some Postmodern Jukebox
songs. Personally I don't find the bass on my pair to be too much but leaving out the 60hz adjustment doesn't change any of the postive qualities of the eq. The 1475hz could probably be left out as well. It doesn't seem to change much. All I really notice is a touch more power in some vocals which I personally like.
Pre Amp -5db
60hz - (1, Q2) (optional)
1475hz - (1, Q5) (optional)
3890hz - (4, Q7)
5665hz - (4, Q7)
8500hz - (-4, Q6)
12177hz - (5, Q6)
17220hz - (5, Q7)
This is a great tuning that adds brightness and clarity without causing sibilance. 5665hz can potentionally cause harshness, so it's worth trying if the tuning sounds good without this peak or at lower value.
Glad to see you speak on these. I think you're review was spot on. Altho not perfect they're still my go to cans for sure.
Thanks for the review Chrono!
Thank you for checking it out!
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 I never skip your reviews 😉
You should try the AKG K 361 too. I bought it six weeks ago and I really like it very much. It sounds on the natural side with good bass extension, very good neutral mids and clear trebles. For 100 bugs (in Germany) it's a super headphone. Maybe better than the 371 if you keep in mind the price. Try it!
I just got these last week. Can someone tell me if I'm nuts, cause my pair sound great overall, but way too flat for my tastes. The bass is weak imo, and I know that's at least partly because I do like a lot of bass. My previous pair were a rather cheap pair of EKG E900 Pro gaming headphones which were the most bass-heavy headphones I've ever had. It was a bit more than they could handle, but I did enjoy it more often than not especially when listening to hip hop/rap.
I've tried oratory1990's EqualizerAPO/Peace preset, and it's a lil better but not really. He mentions that the third band/105hz is where I can adjust for bass and increasing it from 5.5 to 8.2 helps but it's still...idk, eh?
This bothers me the most because I've seen several people talk about how bass heavy they can be and I'm just not seeing that. Any ideas?
They are very bass heavy for audio enthusiasts and audiophiles, since too much Bass can drown out details and the rest of the frequency response.
Agreed with most of it except the dynamics. I own the k371 and Dt 770 and this guy punches better for me than 770s. Also, there have absolutely no Trebles harshness which DT770 are way too harsh for some tracks. These are foldable and come with a removable cable along with different lengths of cables. I enjoy them better overall than 770s.
K371 is not particularly dynamic. sound lacks weight and impact. That is why I ended up returning them.
I wanna buy a headphone under $200, don't care about open or close. For Sound quality only 58x or k361??
@@towsifshahriarshovo Used 650 or 560S
@@KirkLazurus thanks for the reply
@@KirkLazurus yes but the 650 and 560 requires a powerful amp
I gave up on audio gear but when my Philips L2 gave out, I ordered the K371 and the DT 700 pro X. I found myself raising the volume of the X to get the bass I wanted, leaving me at a higher overall volume. While I found the X super comfy, the K is good, and I think the sound target is solid. No need to EQ or listen loudly, great replacement, hopefully it also last years.
Please give us your review of Hifiman Sundara. I am curious to know your thoughts on him and also test your EQ for him. Good job.

@@chrono-headphonereviews242 Thank you! I'll check it out right now
Metal 571 brought me here... I am not disappointed.
Dumb comment
The tizzy, sharp treble, and overblown bass were deal breakers for me on the DT-770. Not sure why people like them so much.
What closed back do you recommend under 200 dollars?
@@m.richards6947 The ones in this review - the AKG K371. They are fairly neutral, with a bit of extra bass punch.
Dt 770 are garbage
It's just because loas of streamers use them.
God when will this suffering end. First I had been reading about m50x and planned to buy them, them I heard they are garbage compared to dt 770 and now this. Help please...I just want to use them for music listening at home and for watching movies. Sometimes I use Ableton for music producing so I could use them for monitoring.
Can anybody compare these headphones to the Sennheiser HD560s? I'm looking for the best-sounding headphones in this price range for music playback. My daily driver is the Fidelio X2HR for now.
So if I want to get something you recommend I guess I can call it pulling the Chrono Trigger? (I'll see myself out)
Ayyyee that's another great Chrono Trigger reference in the comment section XD, I'm gonna have to start writing these down for future videos. ;)
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 It's my favorite game of all time!
Metal 571 adviced me to get these... Cant wait ...
Thank you for the review and comparing it to the 770s. Which 770 Ohm version, were you listening to?
Thanks for checking out the review. Also, it was the 80ohm version of the DT 770
Good video. I asked myself when the Harman curve is the way to go why the hell the companies are not able to build their headphone to fit the curve?
This retailed for $149 3 years ago? Wow. It's $190 now. I got it with an Amazon sale for $155. I went with a amp/convert to type-c combo for mobile use when I travel. Out of the headsets I tried out, these were the best cleanest sound. Long term concerns over quality, but we shall see. They were comfortable to use for 4 hours of streaming edm. I felt the headphone pressure on my ears for a few minutes after taking them off though. I think for my first pair of headphones since a Razer or Corsair gaming set, these are great. More than I normally pay on a pair, but I care more about sound quality for live streaming festivals and radio broacasts of edm, than I used to. It helps my mental health. I do like bass heavy for hardstyle, but not to the point it causes ear pain and headaches. I think the K371 are the right first pair to begin my audiophile journey with.
Guitar Center talked me into trying the Sennheiser HD200 first, but I returned them. I found the upper bass and mid tones too muddy for my liking. And the earmuffs to small for me. I had pain after 30 minutes.
Been eyeing these for quite some time...but it seems to have qc issues
Btw k361 next?
Yep, had one of the early ones, had to return them because of bad swivel mechanism, badly molded cups, issue with seal (no bass) and shouty mids...
@@HeliBenj I think I got a crap pair too as mine sounded anything but warm and that 8khz peak he mentioned was very harsh and extremely fatiguing on my pair.
Mine have no issues. Also, I got them for $71.
Got them $100 open box. No issues after 5 and a half months.
@@sagargour1 Where did you get them for $71?
These honestly aren't as good as most reviewers are claiming. I bought them and sold after about 3 months. The sound is flat and detailed, but amidst the 2-4k area the sound is just super underwhelming, like it sounds either distorted or just really lacking something. Also the ear cups flatten so much eventually that my ear was touching the driver, which was annoying, though i have a pretty big head so it likely squeezed them above average. Idk they are better than m50x and m40x but I would instead opt for some dt770s or 6xx's personally.
These are some special headphones indeed! Nice review
Good stuff Chrono. That phone was a little "monochronatic" to my taste though. :-)
Thanks for this, I have my next purchase narrowed down between these and the DT770's, and hope to try both in a store.
I hope you bought the DT770s over these...
@@guybuddy1 Haven't bought any yet, planning for August and definitely leaning toward the DT770's.

Don‘t have the AKG, but currently have DT 770, ATH-M50x and DT 700 Pro X.
And one thing I can say is that Beyerdynamic has outstanding quality. No other can match.
i like the audio technica 50 lol but most audiophiles hate them but im still looking for a headphone in that price range that can have that bass thump only with no midrange scoop and clearer highs but so far nothing seems to the job .i like that club sound only wish it ws a little more clearer than the audio technica.any ideas??? thanks for the video
Helpful video!
I've already got the open-backed DT 900 Pro X for mixing/mastering, but I'm looking for something closed-back & cheaper like the K371 for monitoring vocals as i speak/sing, and also ambient sound samples/field recordings with my Tascam recorder. So I don't need the _best_ quality headphones for that stuff, but I'd still like them to be as neutral as possible for this general price-range. Are the K371s neutral enough for those purposes? Any recommendations?
Just for vocals, I'd say the K371 are basically a cheaper version of the Sennheiser HD650. Mids and lower treble region graph very, very similarly. The K371 just have a bit more upper treble gain and CONSIDERABLY more bass and sub-bass, but it is tightly controlled enough not the bleed into the mids. They're going for about $110 right now and I honestly don't think there's a single headphone in that price bracket or below that competes favorably against them. Just the fact that I can compare the mids against those from the HD650 should demonstrate that.
If you want the ultimate in neutrality then no. The K371 are harman with considerable sub-bass and bass gain, so they're not going to sound terribly off, but if you mix with them then you're going to produce some anemic sounding mixes because of the bass gain. For vocals and most instruments, you'll likely find them to be adequate for sampling and some monitoring if you have more accurate speakers or headphones to mix with.
Great Video! lovin' the Kimetsu no Yaiba posters in the background
How would these compare in terms of audio, so detail, separation, sounds stage to my Sony WH1000-XM4's. I have never owned passive headphones and am getting a pair of Sennheiser HD 560s for open back usage and wondered if these would serve as my entry point for closed back for my first foray into audiophile style Headphones or the DT770 PRO, again these will be my first pair. If either are not noticably better than the Sony driven passively or powered then I see no point in getting them, would appreciate your advice plz.
Isn’t that a silly question?
@@arthursimsa9005 well it was asked a year ago and quite a few headphones have come since asking, but reread ing it and the point it was asked then no not really.
@@adrianmorrish8494 It is my understanding that active noice canceling headphones are known for being strictly inferior to more traditional wired closed-back headphones, even when they cvost 3 times more. What do you think now one year later then? Have you compared your XM4 against the the K371?:)
@@arthursimsa9005 I absolutely know that now, but didn't then hence the question, I had no idea but fro reviews and articles getting into this passion, I was hearing it was, I actually bought a pair at a very good sale price of philips shp9600's and that was me sold, I now have a few open and closed back headphones, dynamic and planar and a small number of amps and DAC'S. At that time as new to this pursuit I was just asking for advice, fortunately on other forums such as reddit and hifi areas did.
@@adrianmorrish8494 Cool. What closed-backs did you go for in the end? I'm actually looking for one right now.
What is the connector for this and what end (male/female)??? These and other AKG headphones look nice and sound good, but I want to get the V-Moda BoomPro for it (or similar ones) and need to know the kind of adapter I would need
I’ve tried EQing my DT770, DT1770, and DT1990 to the Harman Kardon target curve, using oratory1990’s settings, but ended up hating it... It made the mids sound dull and the bass sound over done.
Did that with my M40Xs.
Didn't like it at all.
How do they compared with Sennheiser hd58x??
I like them. I can't stand the 770's with their weak power handling. These are the dark to the 7506's bright. I need both and these two headphones work well.
same here about the 770s, never did like them OR the K701s (even with a Schiit) - will be buying the K371 today - locally, just in case, for returns.
I just need a pair of wireless headphones closed back that sound reasonably better than the Sony XM4? Any suggestions other than these
I'm going to start producing cinematic orchestral music, is the k371 better than athm50x for this purpose and also for listening to classical and piano music?
My last pair of headphones with the headband padding glued to it, the padding came loose and fell off after only a year ;_:
I'm not sure if I might get these or not because of that.
My current headphones are still going strong but the ear cup and cable are getting worn by now after nearly 5 years
U had a chance to listen to the Verite c? listenend to them yesterday. They sound very similar to the standard Verite, but the 3d effect is on steroids.
If you had to choose between the ath-50x akg k371 or the DT 770 Pro which one would you choose just for a casual listening!
probably 770s...they are also good for making music (afaik).
The k371!!! I have tried exactly these headphones:
dt770 is realy detailed, but has very sharp highs and not enough bass. Good for mixing but not to just Listen to music
The AT m50x have a very intens V shaped EQ. Strong upper bass (more then the dt770) and very sharp highs. But the mids are weak and dont Sound natural. The dt 770 has better mids
But the k371 are nearly perfect in every aspekt: very nice and natural mids, a good sub bass (not cracy a lot of it, just enough) and clear but smooth highs.
Chrono, a revisit to Audio Technica M50x would be a great video considering their sales numbers.
I hated those horrible AT pieces of junk. The most annoying high-end I've ever heard in a headphone. No bass. Blechhhhhh I returned them.
Love these for the office. Use open backs at home. But can you replace the cord? Hate the telephone wire cable. Or did it come with another one that I might have thrown away?
It came with 3 cables.
Whenever I use these, no matter the source, mids sound very tinny and recessed. Do I just have a broken one?
With the stock cord provided the microphonics from scratching on my shirt and shoulder were maddening. They are not as noticeable at full volume, but kinda silly considering these aren't 50 dollar headphones.
Are the better than m40x's though, with swapped pads because they are the same price point around a 100€.
The k553 is a great closedback can too. Very pleased with it.
nah, i gave it...too "airy" 4 me.
I have the old Bluetooth Sony mdr 1000x first generation and I don't no if they sound better than the Sony at meantime I would like to try the AKG k 371 with the IFI hip dac in my Samsung S10 Plus. Between the AKG 371 and the AKG k 271 Mk II wich the two are better for the dac? I know I can use the 371 without the dac in the S10 Plus because of the 32 ohm.
the sound quality of the k371 is better than the k271 mkII, the k371 has a wide frequency range of 5-40000hz so if you want to add a Dac/amp suitable for Loseless 24 bit song formats
Weird... I was just watching Metals’ review of this like an hour ago. Now you’re reviewing it and Metal’s commenting on it . What’s going on ?? Lol
Reviewer-ception
I dont know if my set is defective or not but this sounded like something else when paired with tube amp. Like omg night and day better than connected from my laptop however overall this could do more in the mid bass section at least in my own taste / opinion.
The low impedance and high sensitivity, along with the closed back design, combine to create one of the most source transparent sets I've heard. Like, I could tell on some other sets that the different sources I was listening through had their own tuning, but man do the K371 just make that obvious. I personally like them on my R3 Pro Saber because of its almost ruthlessly neutral tuning, but if you like warm sounding audio then I can absolutely see how the K371 on a tube amp could be fantastic.

AKG could make an almost perfect headphone, but they chose to make it expandable...
The mmx300mk2 is the closed back bench mark hands down
The Harmon Target claims to be what the majority of listeners like.
Do people actually believe that a sample size of 249 people would represent the majority of headphone listeners?
We have no idea what music they listened to or the equipment they used and again it was only a sample size of 249 people.
It's ridiculous and a joke that should not be taken seriously, ever.
It's nothing more than a marketing ploy that went mainstream and I really wish people would wake up.
We actually do know what they listened to. I implore you to read through the AES collection on this topic. It's massively comprehensive research.
music on this video is horrible clips out lol hope it dosent reflect on these headphones
I wanted these to be good so bad... They definitely are not "monitors".
These are good walking around headphones. Can easily be driven by a phone. As for reference or studio mixing phones? NOPE. They're a bit spotty in some areas when it comes to sound.
Which phones are good for mixing? I am researching this for two days and my head is spinning. Every pair of headphones that is said to be for studio mixing has a comment like this saying that they are no good.
@@LostStylus It's kind of tough. The 371's are pretty good, but before AKG was bought by Harmon Karmon, I would have said almost any of their studio reference phones were great. But I doubt it now. However, the old AKG engineers started their own company called Austrian Audio. Now, I hear those a great, but they have two versions that are slightly different.
Don't get me wrong, these are decent headphones, but I have an old AKG headphone, and this one, and you can tell the difference in sound. Some notes come through very clear on one, and not on the other. The problem is some muddiness in some high an low notes. But maybe it's nit-picking.
Also, if you're just doing some dubstep electronica stuff, really, you don't need to be sophisticated. The AKG 371's are "good enough". Make no mistake, they're probably better sounding than most headphones you've listened to, but there are ones that are a bit better, if you're willing to pay for it.
If you want closed backed, the AKG K553 MKII looks good (make sure it has a removable cable), but depending on what you want to spend, I might go with Austrian Audio. They're what AKG used to be, and their stuff is made in Austria.... not china. Very high quality and build, for a decent price, if you're willing to spend that much. Less slave labor, if that's a thing you care about. Look up some videos on the subject.
I personally have the 371's for walking around and light listening. I go for my AKG 702's (pre Harmon Karmon purchase) for heavy listening at home, and they can be used for mixing in some settings, but they're open back, so you can't used them in noisy environments.
Yes... I know it's confusing.
@@LostStylus Actually, ignore my previous comment on the 371's. For the money, they're really good. I realize I've been too used to the open back headphones I wear, and after hearing some reviews on Austrian Audio, I'm thinking that the 371's might actually be better than Austrian's HI-X55 when it comes to sound quality.
It's all subjective. If you want these for mixing, go for it. They sound better than they should for what you're paying for them.
The 371's have a slightly better build than the 361's, as it uses more metal. You also get 3 quality cables with these headphones, including a coiled one, which on its own sells for over 30 bucks. So you're getting about 70 dollars worth of cable with these headphones.
They take a few days to break in. So be aware.

@@peplegal8253 Oh, Hell yes. I have the k702's, and they're great. But I know the K712's are even better.
If you can get them on some sort of deal, like on Massdrop, I say, go for it.
Make sure your deck can drive them properly. They need a bit of power to run, and plugging them into a phone for listening isn't going to cut it.
