Optoma HD27 DLP Projector Repair / No lamp ignition

  • This HD27 was sent in by a customer from my day job who was unable to get the lamp to light. Optoma wanted $198 just to put it on a bench plus the repair. I found that piece of the OEM lamp glass had chipped off under a mounting tab and gotten stuck in the lamp fan. Removal of that glass bit allowed the fan to run again and which allowed the lamp to light.

    Thanks for these videos. Just replaced the bulb and color wheel on my hd27 to fix both problems. However now I see fuzzy white specs on a dark/black image that I can't seem to be able to blow/shake off. Did I dislodge some dust?

    Hey Frank can you do a video on cleaning the dust out of the lens of any Benq projector. I have tried to clean them but no joy. After cleaning the mirrors and magnifiers in front of the dmd chip still dust is there. the dust disappears when focusing the lens but as soon as you turn the lens out of focus they appear. I did not clean the dmd for fear of damaging it.

    I've got an Optoma X600 Projector, I only use it a few times a year. No longer fully powers on. Power light blinks 7 times, pauses, 7 again, and repeats. Google search points to a Lamp Door Sensor, but I cannot find any schematics on how to address that. PC Detects the Audio signal from it, and web-interface of the projector says "No Errors", so i doubt its the board. Any thoughts?

    Hey fix it frank I am having a problem with my projector. The projector comes on and runs and I replaced the bulb but before I did the light went out. Like no picture, before it completely went dark the colors were off like yellow was green red was brown etc. New bulb still no light or picture. Color wheel still clicks and fan still runs but bulb light comes up red and power like turns orange but the projector still running

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      Kind of sounds like you ended up with a defective or low quality bulb. If a new bulb gave you flickering and offset colors, that is a symptom of a cheap housing. They will cause the color wheel to get confused and shut the projector down and even prevent it from lighting all the way.
      I have a link in that description box for a bulb that is good quality. I doubt the projector is broken at this point,. I bet its a bad bulb.

      That is annoying. I would check the status output of each fan and see if one isn't working. I have a video on testing fans that might help. It's possible something on the main board has an issue. The fan control IC might be bad or the pullup resistor for the fan status lead. Also check the solder on the connect.

    Hello - I have an HD27. When I press the Power button, it initially goes blue. But then after a couple of seconds, the lamp LED shows red and the power button begins flashing red. I had tried to reset it by unplugging all the cables and then holding the power button down while inserting the power cord. Then the power LED began blinking quickly and then I released. Then I read to press the Power button again and there should be a "click", but mine never did and eventually the Power LED went back to red. I have yet to resolve the issue. There is no fan that comes on when I try to power it on. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

      That's a tough one. Personally I always remove them and get the number so I am 100% sure before ordering. Being that you have to remove it anyway I would suggest that. Sometimes the online info is incorrect. One other suggestion is to call Optoma. They won't have it in stock but they will likely give your the part number. Their repair service is poor but their parts service is pretty good.

      without seeing it I am guessing but I would be suspect of the mainboard being bad. I can't really say what is bad on the mainboard but if I had to guess, it would be a voltage regulator as they are a common problem. Another possibility is the power supply. This sort of problem is usually pretty terminal. A replacement mainboard is in the $300 range. If you have any local techs who can check it, they want to verify the low voltage power supply first. If that checks out, then check the little voltage regulators on the mainboard. Let them know the PMD1000 IC is a known culprit as well.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому +1

      its hard to say on that chassis. I'd see if the color wheel is okay. Also if you replaced the lamp assembly with a cheap one, that can cause it because they use the wrong IR filter on the housing. Make sure the lamp has a red/blue tint to the front glass. If its green/clear that is your problem. If not, then it might be a mainboard issue.

      Hi George! These have an integrated power supply/ballast that can be "electrically fragile". ua-cam.com/video/SU89j8NoyBc/v-deo.html See this video on the GT1080(short throw version of the HD26 I believe). They are identical electrically and this projector had an issue where the lamp would light occasionally but mostly not. Ended up being a problem in the Power module. • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      Did you replace the wheel or just glue the chunk back in? It could be the wheel you hear clicking. The wheel must spin up before the lamp will ignite. If you didnt replace the wheel, I would do that first. Usually once they throw a segment, they are pretty done. Sometimes you can recover them but its rare that it works.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому +1

      Not the index mark as much as the sensor for the index mark. Since its spinning dust tends to not attach to the hub, but since it is spinning, the mark can fly off. The dust can land on the index mark sensor. I'd check the lamp assembly first. If its older(1500+ hours) I would try another proper new lamp assembly first. If its fairly new(less than 1000 hours), then check the color wheel area. Bad lamps are always my first suspicion since its the most common problem, and then I troubleshoot from there. If you want to post a video of the noise or check the short I posted with a bad color wheel noise ua-cam.com/video/TEnXuTeZjIw/v-deo.html (same chassis as the HD27).

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому +1

      It sure sounds like the index mark came off. That 'dit dit dit' noise is the motor speed adjusting to try and pickup the sensor. See if that black sticker came off the hub. The segments should be ok (like you noticed). I suspect the index mark fell off. It's a common problem on this chassis. Or the index mark sensor is acting up. The noise tells me that "something" with the color wheel index mark is the likely the problem. You may get away with regluing the index mark sticker back onto the hub or just replace the whole wheel. They are pretty inexpensive.

      I suggest a new lamp first. Make sure its a reputable brand or comes from a reputable seller. Amazon is a cesspool in my opinion for lamps. eBay is actually safer in my opinion. Otherwise, if you are in the states, I suggest any company on this list. They all sell decent quality lamps that will have the proper IR filter lens that most of the Amazon lamps do not have. www.projectorcentral.com/projector-lamp.htm I'd buy from whoever has the best reviews and best prices.

      I would suggest looking for a used name brand projector(epson, optoma, NEC etc) as they will last far longer. You can find an older used beamer/proyector for less than $100USD and even as cheap as $20-30USD. I would stay away from LCD versions unless you can view an screen image first. old LCD can have a spot in the middle that is not repairable. DLP/LCOS tend to hold up longer.

I wont even take these in for repair because of how they are designed to fail. the companies who make these, use parts that fail intentionally so they can sell you more projectors. They skip things like fuses and extra fans and heatsinks that would help the longevity because they want you to buy a new DB power every year or so. I'd look for a used Optoma HD20, BenQ W1080, W1070 or Mitsubishi. they will treat you very well!

    where is the fix? this is a cleaning the title suggests you diagnose an issue and repair it. Im not getting lamp ignition. the lamp appeared to be working then the color wheel was noisy. the lamp doesnt seem bad, but the base does look chipped but no debris inside. no lamp ignition at all after color wheel replacement

      The repair for this was a cleaning. That is the fix for that particular projector. I say that in the video description.
      From what you commented, its probably something to do with your color wheel replacement. What specifically I can't say. Numerous things can cause no lamp ignition. Best I can offer with the info provided is go over your work and see if you missed something or re-assembled something incorrectly. There is no one cause.

      If you don't place the cover back on or trick the switch, neither fan nor lamp will go on.

    Hi Frank, I have a similar projector the optoma hd142x and the bulb won't ignite neither, but the power works and I can turn it on and after the colour wheel spun 3 times the red lamp led flashes. I replaced the bulb but it still won't ignite, so I took the projector apart and checked everything, the colour wheel, the optics and the fan but everything worked. Could it be the power supply or even the main board? I hope you can help me.
    Your videos are great by the way, helped me a lot so far.

      @@lackoo123 yeah, I replaced the power supply and so far it works great. I bought it on ali baba or Express, I dont remember but the name of the power supply is AIO 203g C/T25. But don't take my word on it, i don't know if you are having the same problems as I did.
