I suspected a color wheel issue on my HD27E. When I opened it up, it was the same exact issue as here, and I was able to repair it. Even though the innards were a little different, I still managed to get it done. Thanks so much!!
My projector is still working well, but it is very noisy… Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Interestingly, the projector is noisier when the source switches to 50hz, and quieter at 60hz. There is a very noticeable “whine” and is ver distracting.
Thanks Frank! I changed the bulb but it didn’t fix the problem. Found this video and sure enough, when I took it apart the color wheel had 2 broken pieces inside. Saved me about $1,000 thinking I was going to buy a new projector.
Thanks Frank. My HD26 was also acting odd / noisy shutting down with lamp and flashing red power light. Used this instructional video to help me to clean out all the dust, and also found out that the black tape on the colour wheel was almost all gone just like this one. So I did a similar bit of servicing, and so far so good! Back up and running!
@FixitFrank question have you seen color wheels go bad even if black part of color wheel looks absolutely fine? I added black electrical over it and nothing
Thanks. Just by disassembling, removing the color wheel, and blowing out my HD28DSE which was overheating and turning off, I fixed it! Gonna quit my day job now. Apparently, this is what the Optoma service techs do as well. Weeks after purchasing the unit I had lamp failure - would not turn on at all - plugged in, unplugged, reset, removed and replaced lamp assembly - nothing, so sent it to Optoma in California for repair and: "The technicians have informed me that after extensive testing, they could not duplicate the issue with your projector. We will send the projector back." And it worked perfectly for 4.5 years until this.
Thanks for share your knoledge. My Optoma GT1080 presented the same issues and this video was an excellent guide to fixed it. Instead of use the black tape, I used a sharpie and the projector worked well
I greatly appreciate this video. It helped me to get my projector going again as it had a dirty color wheel. Thanks to you I was able to take it apart, clean the color wheel and slap it back together with absolutely no cost. Thank you for the videos you have already made and keep these wonderful videos coming.
HD141x - noisey color wheel, no lamp light, very dusty. This video was super easy to follow and clear instructions to save me $100's of dollars. My problems were likely related to the color wheel and tape. I didn't see any marker tape on my CW and so I re-applied some on the original area like you suggested in the video. Put it all together and voila! Thankyou!
I have the same model (well, mine is called a DH1009 but it appears to be exactly the same as yours in every respect). Came across this video by accident, I'd already replaced the lamp and when I heard you fire yours up the first time it all clicked into place. My color wheel was also missing the black marker but after using tape it was still noisy so I just went and got another color wheel anyway and now it works perfectly! The added bonus being that the original lamp was fine too so I now have a spare (it was a cheap one rather than an Osram but at least I have something when the time comes!) Thank you!
Thanks for this video ! I ran into the same issue : HD26LV projector out of order due to black mark missing on the color wheel rotor. I tried to place a piece of electrical black tape but it didn't stick longer than 15 minutes ! I tried to use a black marker pen for CD but it wasn't detected. Finally I solved it by using black matted paint for metal. And I also had to stick again the foam !
This fixed my initial color wheel problem. Thank you! It was just as you described. However, now I'm having an issue with color fluctuating after I put a new bulb in. I checked the color wheel and all seems fine. I cleaned it with alcohol and reassembled but still the color fluctuation with the new bulb. For some reason it does not like this new bulb. It was supposedly an OEM part. I'm starting to doubt it was OEM.
Some companies use the term OEM erroneously. Check the glass filter on the front of the lamp assembly. Make sure it is reddish and not greenish or clear. Where did you buy it if you dont mind my asking? If it was amazon, you likely found your problem.
Thank you very much for this great channel. Never been under the hood of a projector before yesterday and because of your videos I was able to restore my color wheel IR sensor to proper function. Along with proper cleaning of the wheel and internal lenses it’s performing visibly better as well. Keep up the great work!
Great video Frank - my HD26 suddenly started posterizing the image, and after lots of surfing I found your video - fixed the black tape on and all is well. Really appreciate you taking the time to make this tutorial.
Thank you so much, Frank, for this wonderful video. I was able to replace the color wheel by following your instructions. Thanks again for your great help and keep up the great work!
Great video! Can't wait to open mine up. Have a similar Optoma model experiencing the same issue after a new lamp. It's our main TV so we're definitely missing it. I believe this will save me from sending it to Optoma. Thanks so much! 😃😃😃🙌🏼
I frank, i have a Benq MX720 this projector have the same problem, but the noises comes after 2 minutes after turn on, starts work fine and then the colors strat flickering and shut down, i clean the sensor and color wheel, but the problem persist, any idea? Or i need to replace the color wheel and sensor? Sorry for my bad english, thanks.
My Optoma GT1080Darbee makes a loud whirling noise when turned on and it does this for a little while before it turns off and gives me a red light on the lamp indicator. I tried replacing the lamp, but still got the same issue. Any ideas? Thanks Frank!
Hi! probably the color wheel. If you want to share a video with the camera close to the projector, I can likely tell if the color wheel had the little sticker fall off.
@FixitFrank, thanks for this video. Just a quick question. We replaced the fan and it makes no noise now. However, we keep getting the same message about the fan being locked (although now it works fine) and the projector auto-shuts down. Is there a way to reset it quickly, before it shuts itself down so that the message doesn't appear anymore? Thanks again!
I'd check your fan connection. There is no way to disable that warning. it is a protection system for the projector. It's possible the new fan has a defective fan status circuit. I have seen that. It's not common but it can happen. The other possibility is a mainboard problem. I have an HD141x here with a fan lock warning even though the fans are working properly. I'm troubleshooting the mainboard now on that one. I would ask the seller you got the fan from for another. If the second fan still shows that issues, you possibly have a deeper issue. Also make 100% the replacement fan is the same exact model as the original. Even a same sized/voltage fan may not have the same status reporting circuit and that can cause the error too.
@@FixitFrank :) So guess what. After a few hours of Paw Patrol (I know…), it stopped working again. Figured the index did not hold, decided to order a new color wheel which arrived today. Replaced it (with the help of this video). But to no avail. It starts (fan blowing, not sure if the color wheel spins, but I checked with a cotton swab, it moves just as the old), but no light comes on. Peculiarly it tries three times (for like 7 seconds each try), after which it switches off. No loud noises, no smoke. Nothing. Just three tries, and that’s it. I have opened it again, checked all the connections. Watched some of your other videos, but actually repairing stuff on the power plate is beyond my capabilities. Do you perhaps have any suggestions? Low hanging fruit? Any input is appreciated! Kind regards!
@@duncanfransz so I just did this repair also and I noticed in addition to the color wheel, the arm of the little pressure switch on the door to the lamp had gotten bent from taking it apart. Try holding that switch down while turning it on to see if that's stopping the startup process.
Hi dude, your videos are very cool. i have a trouble with my 4k projector OPTOMA UHD60 . The lamp does not ignite. no color wheel sound, just fans, and then stop and the "power" and "lamp" lights solid on. This pj uses just one PCB for both power y ballast. I already checked the mosfets with the multimeter and they seem fine.
Hmm. How are the low voltage capacitors looking and do you have any power to the color wheel drive IC? I cant recall if this has a PMD1000 IC for power control but if it does, check the datasheet and see if the chip is outputting properly.
Excellent video. Thank you. I replaced the color wheel with no problem. And now the bulb doesn't work. Just received a new bulb, and it doesn't work either. Any thoughts, assuming it isn't the new bulb? Everything goes on - the fan and power and then the indicator for failed lamp after three cycles on my Optoma HD26.
Hi Eric, Did the bulb work before you charged the wheel? My guess is a wire might not be seated all the way. either the color wheel sensor or the ballast. If you had light before the wheel was replaced, double check your work and I bet you find something easy. That is what usually happens to me at least.
@@FixitFrank Everything worked before. Took it apart, cleaned, & ordered a new color wheel when the noise still present. Put the new color wheel in and no light Just used your Mitsubishi example to test the color wheel, holding down the door latch without the lamp, powering on, and observing for spin. The new color wheel does not spin. Put the old one back in & it doesn't spin either - it worked before, just noisy. Does this test work with the HD26?
It does. You should see the wheel spin 3 times before the lamp LED flashes. Make sure the cable is the right way around. The conductors go towards the board.
If you are in the USA, I have one or 2 I think. I have an email listed on the about page if you want to get in touch. Otherwise, I'd reach out to the parts folks I use in China. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com They have a network of e-recyclers that can get one for you.
Thank you so much frank about this video .My projector power supply totally off do you have any idea?I cheak power Supply Board no evidence burn capacitor and other components
You are very welcome! I have a few ideas. If they do not find the problem, you will need a new power supply. Unplug power and check these things: 1. Check the fuse (0 ohms). 2. NTC thermistor(green disk near fuse). Should be 6-10ohms 3. Verify bridge rectifier with diode test 4. Check Mosfets for short circuit. 5. Check large resistor connecting ground to negative pin on rectifier. Anything else could be bad PFC drive chip or problem in PFC drive circuit. Easier to buy a replacement power supply. Good luck!
Cheers Frank for you very informative video. I’ve just replaced my osram bulb that exploded last week and as I watched a film, the projector “an Optima just like yours” just went black. I switched it back on and it came back on but only for a minute or two then went off again. I will check for dust etc. Do you suggest anything else Best regards Dave
Hi Dave, If it's the HD26 like this one, I would check the fan to see if some of the glass bits got into it and are preventing it from spinning. What sort of indicator LEDs are you seeing?
Big fan of yours!amazing 📹....I will buy now the optoma hd28a and want to ask you what kind of maintenance should I do to it and every when?it has 1 year warranty so how can I clean it from dust if I can't open it without voiding the warranty?Or I send it for a service and cleaning after one year?
I will be a video on routine maintenance soon. The reason I open many of these is because people do not do simple maintenance when it is new. In your situation, I think as long as you use a vacuum cleaner with a brush/bristle attachment, and run it across the air vents, the amount of internal dust will be kept to a minimum. If you are able, you should remove the lamp assembly, then use the wand attachment to clean inside the lamp basket. It may even prevent the need to even open it for an internal cleaning. I think doing a simple cleaning every season would be ideal. But in reality, I think twice a year is okay with modern projectors. They have more space for airflow inside it seems. I owned an HD26 for a while(this one in the video) and it was a wonderful projector. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!
@@FixitFrank thank you so much for your answer.Because I want badly to buy the optoma hd28e but was scared of the maintenance of it ant its life spam.for movie watching do you prefer DLP over rpsons 3LCD?,
Thank you Frank, I have the HD27 sligjt buzzing since moving it to a wall mount only a couple of feet from my head due to ceiling light fitting, noise is starting to get annoying now, it was OK when I had it on a tripod sobdomt know if it's due to been closer to me me, anyway thank you hoping the set-up is similar to the HD27, is there way to check the colour wheel while it's on screen ?
Hi, It might be the color wheel, but I would also check to see if its vibration from the mount. The easiest way I can think of to see if the wheel is the issue would be to shut the projector off and listen for a change in the vibration. The CW will stop but the cooling fan should run for a little bit longer.
Fantastic! I have this exact model (or maybe one very similar) that wouldn't turn on. Followed the steps and it works perfectly. Although to be honest I only needed the first 8 minutes or so.
That's my goal! I leave the video long so people can find the part they need to help with where they are not sure. I'm happy to hear that this was helpful. Thanks for letting me know.
Hi Frank, thanks for all the videos you do. I have the optoma gt750 and the color wheel was loud and dmd chip was going showing white spots on the screen. I got the parts and followed along and changed the dmd chip and color wheel today, however when I put everything back together and turned on the machine my screen just shows a shadow and does not project the optoma logo or any image. Hoping you can lend some helpful tips as to why this would happen. I thought maybe the new parts were no good so swaped them back to the original and came up with the same dark shadow with the 6 spots showing up. When I turn on the media player nothing comes up there either. I really am stuck trying to trouble shoot what could have happened . Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks
That's a head scratcher. My gut tells me to make sure the dmd is seated. Use thr lock screw to release and then retain the chip. Make sure no pins are bent and that no heat sink paste got inside.
@@FixitFrank Thanks Frank for the reply, I tore it down again and tested by putting back the old parst and still had issue so went in and put the new parts back on and I think it was one of the connections that was not tottaly in place because when I tried it again everything is working fine. So no more spots on the screen and no more noise from the color wheel. So thanks for the excellent step by step videos that made this possoible.
Hey Frank, I was able to repair my HD28. The dust buildup made the black thermal tape fall off the color wheel so replaced it. Everything works but now the color wheel is super noisy. Almost like a dremel sound but not that loud. Any suggestions other than replacing it all together? Only parts I can find are from China so would be stuck with that
Thanks for this! Currently trying to repair my EH416 which seems to be almost the same housing as this (there's a second fan where that open spot is next to the main fan) so pretty helpful for disassembling. Initially had issues after putting in a new lamp where the screen would flicker colors, tried looking at the color wheel/taking things apart based on a different video, put it back but now the lamp won't turn on. Going to give dissembling/reassembling what I did before another go following this :)
@@FixitFrank Thanks! Switched it and the lamp turned on and had an image for a bit. Started flashing different colors though and then after a couple minutes it shut down with a lamp error (red lamp led and flashing red power led)
Great Video, quick question if you can help me out. I have Optoma 143X and i just replaced new bulb. It's not turning on at all instead it tried to start 3 times and then both power an bulb light turns Red
Hi! thankyou! Let me ask, what prompted the replacement of the old bulb? Did it act the same way or did it explode or something else? Also, did you buy what you would consider a good quality bulb or possibly was it from amazon? A lot of knockoff lamps litter the internet and believe it or not they can be the root cause. Do you hear any weird noises when it tries to start?
Nice video and I have the hd28dse model but I believe it takes the same color wheel as the projector looks the same and my color wheel is not happy either...makes that awful noise when I start it up....when warm and if I turn off projector it comes on quiet...only when it is left to cool down for some hrs it will make that noise but if I turn off projector and then turn it back on the noise is gone...but color wheel is getting lunched a bit already and I assume the teardown is the same and thanks for this video. 😊
@@FixitFrank I actually have the Optoma HD25-LV and that old crate color wheel is still going...i guess they were better maybe.. But I do use this PJ everyday for over 10 hrs and it is about 3 years old...all that heat I guess for that long everyday could do it.. But I can get one for 29 USD a new one so good to go in case...thanks again for that video as I have taken apart PJs before think the motherboard board was going to be in the way...but I like the setup in these models. 😊👍
Frank I have a optima DX 342 projector has it for 4 years anyway I switched it on and as it was starting up it was making an awful noise and the picture on the screen was just flickering then the projector just went off altogether any ideas frank what it could be Thankyou
Hi Frank Thanks for the amazing videos. Greetings from Australia. My projector (Optoma UHD50) sometimes show a purple or green tint to the screen, and sometimes a vertical line in the middle. If I turn off and on the projector a few times (usually max 3) the issue disappears and will just appear again the next time I turn on. Do you think this is a color wheel issue? If yes, do you know how to identify the model number and where to buy a new one? Cheers Marcelo
Hi Marcelo, it does sound like a color wheel, aside from the line. I've never seen a vertical line caused by a color wheel. That said it might be a visual artifact of the wheel error. I use a company out of china called Time projector for parts. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is the email. Be sure to remove the color wheel and take pics of it and the label on the wire. Send the pics with the email and they will take good care of you. They take paypal and ship world wide. You're much closer than I am so I imagine shipping is very reasonable.
You ask a really good question. I will do a video specifically on what I look for and why. The short version is I am looking in the arc globe(near the base of the reflector) for discoloration, cracks, anything that isn't clear and shiny. A well used lamp will have a white deposit laying on the inside of the globe. They may still work to a degree. A burned out lamp will have a dark grey/black swirl inside the globe. Obviously a crack or similar damage would render it done. Since there is no easy way to test these lamps(via meter etc), a visual inspection tends to be the only option for most cases.
Hello, I've go an Optoma GT1080E. When turn it on it does a great job for like 3-10 minutes. untill the screen goes dark. The lamp still gives light. The screen has just no brightness anymore. I can still see the video playing but just a little bit when my room is completly dark. Help me pls... tried replacing the bulb with a new OEM bulb, resetted lamp hours, resetted to factory settings. tried everything..
Hello Frank, may I ask for your T/S recommendations on an Optoma HD26, with the following issue, please? When powered, the fan comes on for a few seconds, then stops. It repeats the cycle twice more. Then, the lamp light turns solid red, and the stand-by led starts blinking orange. The projector lamp does not turn on. Thank you!
Hi Liviu! On the surface, it sounds like a lamp failure. I always suggest replacing the lamp first since it tends to be the most common failure point. Be sure the replacement lamp is of good quality and has the proper UV/IR cut lens on the housing. I list a company in the description that sells in the USA. If you are overseas, www.myprojectorlamps.eu/ are pretty good. They sell APOG lamps which are the best aftermarket lamps you can buy. If the lamp does not fix, it then the color wheel is suspect. Start with the lamp assembly though. I suspect that will get you going.
Hi Frank great vid. Ran into an issue with my hd28hdr where it starts making a buzzing noise after the initial startup. Do you suspect this to be from the colorwheel?
Hi Kev, It does seem to be a regular issue with this chassis. If you want to link a video with the noise, I would be happy to listen and see if it sounds like a CW issue.
@@FixitFrank Thanks Frank, here's a link to the vid ua-cam.com/video/DNMxN61p0Gg/v-deo.html. Not as loud in person, I just put my phone mic right beside the buzzing. Buzzing also seems to get louder when switching from Eco to Bright mode
for some reason, your comment was put in the "held for review" thing. I guess because of the link. I just watched and it I don't hear what I think is a bad color wheel. Did you replace the lamp assembly recently? the flickering sure looks like a color wheel but I don't hear the speed changing which is what I would expect.
Super video! I have a HD141X which has stopped outputting sound via both the internal speaker and the audio out 3.5mm socket. Any idea what the most likely cause might be, and where would be best to shop for replacement parts (in Ireland)? Thanks
I have an issue whit my optoma, "blocked (died fan), i replace it with new one, same brand and specs, but when i hit power button starts to boot the projector and the fan starts to spin, but after a few seconds (40s) the projector wont detect the fan is working, and just turn off to protect it. its an GT1080 the bulb and other pices looks great. any idea :(
replaced color wheel , and both fans in HD28dse and still get a fan locked message and it shuts down. tested all fans and color wheel are running, going crazy any suggestions
Ugh,. the dreaded fan lock error. Im fighting with an HD28 right now with the same issue. Im hoping to find the root cause. I'm guessing you checked the tach outputs as well just to make sure they are talking back to the projector?
Thanks for the helpful guide! I have a HD28DSE. Looks the same, but with an extra fan. I have a fan lock error, so I replaced both fans. I also replaced the globe. Still getting fan lock error... and then the new globe went pop! Must have overheated. Any suggestions with getting these fans to work? it sounded super quiet when I replaced them.
Are you sure the fans were the right models? Where did you source them? Fans can look the same and have the same voltage/amp rating but have different fan lock status reporting methods. That is where I would be concerned. Did you replace the lamp blower fan(squirrel cage looking fan) under the mainboard?
@@FixitFrank thanks for the reply. The fans looked identical. Couldn't tell them apart. They were from China bought on ebay. I replaced both fans do yes, the one hidden underneath. It was in a weird plastic cage. Seems the old fans weren't very dirty or clogged. So I'm not sure what the problem might be. Getting close to giving up and buying a new one.
Do they have the same part #? If so, give my channel a search for "fan". I have a video on how to test them in place. I just can't recall the title exactly. There might be a bad Fan IC on the mainboard. They use a small 8 pin control chip.
Hi Frank! My Optoma GT1080Darbee gives me a fan locked error. The fan has randomly made some really minor scratching sound over time. I can hear the fan spin up, picture is fine, about 30 seconds after I get picture the projector shows the fan locked message. I guess I can try to lubricate the fan hub? Where do I buy a new fan for this thing? I'm in Costa Rica but I can have stuff shipped from the US
Hi Sergio! I'd make sure you don't have a wire getting stuck in the fan. I'd expect it to be that large fan that is visible when you remove the lamp. If you need a new fan, I have a contact in China that I recommend. gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is the email. They ship DHL worldwide and I have yet to have a problem with their parts. If you contact them, feel free to mention that I referred you. Also include a picture of the old fan to help them verify the correct part. lubricating the hub might be an option but if its making noise, it might be too far gone. These use a single fan for both cooling and exhaust so that fan is more critical than in other models. I would still check to see if there is something causing the fan to make that noise(loose wire etc) because those fans tend to be very reliable. Please let me know if you have more questions!
@@FixitFrank Hi Frank! First of all, thank you for all the time you take to respond to people like me here, your experience is invaluable and you really try to help anyone you can. I think I know what's going with my projector, I've noticed random flickering of power in the house lately, the projector shuts down, it's still hot, I power it back on and it shows the fan locked message. All I have to do to get it back to normal is let it cool down. So far, I don't think it's a fan issue, I guess time will tell! Thanks!
We are having some issues with our optoma projector, we changed the lamp on October of 2020 and then started to show a message saying the lamp was expired so we requested a warranty and the replacement arrived today but when I put the new lamp is still not working and I realized that the fan works and the color wheel too but it doesn’t run at the same time because the color wheel runs and when it stops is when the fan runs I would really like to see how to take it out to see if the actual problem is the color wheel or try to figure out what else can be. Thanks!
Hi Karla! A few things. The message you saw was actually not because of the lamp. Your projector has a lamp timer that needs to be reset when the lamp is changed. If not, it counts the time that old lamp had applied to it. The projector has no way to know the lamp was changed. Until you reset that timer via the menu, (check your manual) the message will continue to appear. What is your model #? Was the lamp assembly original inside? (Osram/Philips)? Lastly, what are the LED's doing when the projector errors out? Many times the problem is a sub standard replacement lamp assembly. You can end up chasing a wild goose. I would not worry about the color wheel or fan just yet until we determine the lamp quality and what the LEDs on the projector are doing.
Thanks for your quick response!! I appreciate it a lot!! Actually the lamp we got to replace the original was a generic brand named Araca and they gave us warranty, the original brand exploded and before that was heating up pretty bad. The lamp replacement we got after the original exploded lasted 6 months and was working good but from one day to another it stop working we turned on the projector and just keeps flashing the blue light and makes a weird noise on the area of the color wheel. The model is Gt1080 I guess because on the projector base only says dlp projector display
If you want to email me a video of the noise, I can likely tell you if it's the wheel. These seem to have a problem where the wheel spins but the little sticker will come off. That makes the wheel spin too fast as it searches for the missing index mark. New color wheels are pretty cheap. I bet it has the same exact problem as this one. Is the noise kind of similar?
@@FixitFrank I can send a video to you hear because to us sounds pretty similar to this one. Probably not to loud as this one but still sounds different as it was before to stop working. If you can give me the email to send the video I’ll make it.
Glad it worked! I suspect the tape will last a little while but I do know the glue they use will get soft. One thing that I have been meaning to try is using black automotive touchup paint. I know of people who have used it with great success. The goal is to put something there that will not reflect the IR light. If the material does that, then it will work.
@@FixitFrank Electrical tape doesnt seem to work, the projector is hanging in but the colors are all off, so I need another solution, I am guessing a sharpie will melt
Another guy who posts here suggested touch up paint for cars. I want to try it myself. You can get those little touch up paint tubes at auto parts stores pretty cheap.
Hello, I think you can just remove the color wheel without taking the lamp housing out. Remove the 2 screws from color wheel housing into the light colored metal base, and then remove the 2 screws that actually hold the black housing to the sheetmetal. Done in 1min...
Do you have a website?. I have a projector I might need to send you. I have a Optoma WU515. Vertical white lines have appeared on the WHITE test pattern. After research I believe i had the projector too tight in the case and caused these lines as I press down on the top of the projector you can see the lines change and disappear to just reappear again.
Hello! I do this sort of thing on the side mostly, occasionally for my day job, but mostly I work on them for fun and to make videos to help people. From the description of your problem, I suspect the mainboard is not seated securely with the DMD board. Taking the top off, then loosening the mainboard screws and then gently pushing the mainboard to DMD board might take care of it. If you want to, I list my email on the about page about halfway down.
Thanks for this video! I replaced the color wheel of my hd26, too. But now the lamp doesn't light up anymore. I figured out, that the white wire for the lamp seems to be broken. I can measure voltage on the pins where it's plugged in the circuit board but none on the end where the lamp gets plugged. Any suggestions?
Hi, Be VERY careful and only measure for continuity. The startup voltage is many thousands of volts and can smoke your meter. I'd suggest checking each wire for continuity from the ballast output(with the proj unplugged) to the lamp connector. If one is open, check the wire at the crimp end of the ballast first. I have seen those break. If you are careful you can repair the end but if you need a new wire/connector they are available.
Thanks for the interesting tear-down video. My bulb blew in so installed a new lamp. Now shows a solid red power and solid red lamp. The manual isn't clear to me on this, any suggestions?
@@FixitFrank Thanks for the reply. You're right, the cover was the issue. I had not re-installed in order to simply test the bulb installation... Poking around troubleshooting, I noticed the latch which the cover depresses. Figured it out from there. Thanks again.
Спасиба Алексей! I do not have one for the TH530 at the moment. Are you having trouble with one? They are all very similar so many of the same issues are common on other brands.
Are you sure you need to remove the lightbulb basket to get to the color wheel? I'm getting mixed answers on this and from looking at your video, it looks like you could actually get access to it to swap it. I have the HD27 model so I'm not sure if that changes much.
hey man! so i followed this repair and put everything back together but now it seems the color wheel won’t start, as in i power up the unit and press ‘on’, i hear a slight click but the fan nor the color begin spinning. pretty sure i have all the components in place any idea what’s going on?
FixitFrank that’s exactly what the problem was, i rewatched your video and realized how simple and dumb of a problem i had hahaha thank you for your content, it literally saved me $300
Thanks for this - my HD27e is very similar- same chassis- 2 fans though. Mine got really noisy, then gave the fan lock error. Stripped it down and found a sticker had come off a component on the PSU board and fouled the main (large) fan.
Hi, good video. I have a uhd60 4k optoma projector. The 4k HDMI port is faulty and I need to replace the entire PCB. Can you recommend a dealer where I can get one? Thank you
that is pretty new for finding that part. Optoma is the only source I know of for now. In a few more years there will be after sales options but as of now I cant think of any.
I have my optoma projector here and both the lamp light and power light come on red at the same time and nothing on the projector itself works or turns on
Can ya fix mine I'll pay ya, or do you know any good Optoma repair men? When I change my lamp the lamp warning light comes on and the lamp doesn't come on
Hi Gregory! Why don't you send me an email and we can discuss. Do you hear any weird high pitched noises when you try and power it up? Does it smell weird at all(plastic burning smell)? My email is frank@fixfrank.com
Hi! Can you maybe help me; where could I buy a new color wheel, because after watching this very good tutorial I found at, that mine is broken and I think that causes the problem. Do you know any shop I can buy it? Thank you for your help!
eBay is a good source but depending on your country, the stock might be limited. I also use a company out of China called Time Projector. You can email them at gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com Be sure to include a picture of your color wheel. One suggestion you may want to try. Another viewer suggested using black enamel paint to replace the mark that falls off. It might be worth a shot if that is your issue. If the motor is bad, then you still want to replace the color wheel.
@@FixitFrank Thank you su much for your help! Our projector falled down and the wheel is unfortunately in parts. This is the type of the projector we have: www.amazon.ca/Optoma-HD141X-Projector-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B00MK39P92 (nearly the same as you were fixing). Can you maybe tell which type of color wheel I should buy, or how do I find the right one working with my projector? Thank you once more for your help. (Im not that good in fixing things on my own. :) )
www.ebay.ca/itm/ORIGINAL-Brand-New-Color-Wheel-for-OPTOMA-HD141X-HD180-GT1080-HD230X/272643317030 This is a good option for you. That will work just fine.
Hi Capt! Both are flashing? That would make me think one of the fans might not be spinning. There are 4 or 5 in that model I believe. How old is the lamp?
@@FixitFrank correction it's the status and lamp lights both. When the power button is pressed the fan run they sound normal for about 10 to 15 seconds, then they run at high speed after which both lights flash. This happened before so I replaced the lamp ( did not solve problem). Both lamps have less than 150 hrs. This problem was intermittent now its constant. I have replaced the ballast no difference. Thank you for your response
Interesting. That model does have a dynamic iris. They can get stuck. Unfortunately Epson service info is hard to find. The "internal" error you are getting can mean many things. Since it was intermittent, I am leaning towards a possibly stuck or sticking iris. I have a video on Auto Iris' in here somewhere. Not specifically for the 3700 but the theory is the same. I would probably start there. The error most likely means,"something is preventing the lamp from starting". Meaning there are many sensors and circuits that need to be in a specific state before the lamp will ignite. If you have 380dc on the input to the ballast, then your power supply is ok. If you read less than that(150-300dc) you have a power factor correction issue in the main power supply. That can also be a cause. Did you happen to check any of the FETs on the old ballast?
Hard to say sight unseen. Could be few things. Could be a main board failure or power supply. The click is a good sign though. But as far as I know, it's not a simple thing like a fuse or fan. One thought is to check the color wheel. If the glass failed it might have jammed and the click is the wheel trying to spin. The color wheel must spin up first before the lamp and fans come on.
Most certainly! I mostly do this with my day job but I will work on whatever really. I enjoy it. I have an email listed on the about page if you want to get in touch. If its doing the color wheel thing, thats an easy fix.
No its not. It was literally the problem with this projector. The color wheel starting noise is totally different. If this noise was normal, the projector would have been working.
CHIRPY sound AT THE END OF THE VIDEO, when the projector is repaired, is normal. That is what I meant. Of course the sound at the beginning of the video is the problem with the projector in the first place.
Thanks! I know this is an old video but this nailed the problem on my hd26 and saved me from buying a whole new projector.
Fantastic! That is exactly why I do these videos! Thank you for the thanks!
Thanks Frank! I changed the bulb but it didn’t fix the problem. Found this video and sure enough, when I took it apart the color wheel had 2 broken pieces inside. Saved me about $1,000 thinking I was going to buy a new projector.
You're welcome! It makes me so happy to read comments like this. thank you
Thanks Frank.
Nice work Mr Zombie Sir!
I'm glad it was helpful! I enjoy making these videos so it's great to hear they are useful. Thanks for letting me know, I really appreciate it.
Thankyou!
Great to hear!
Excellent detail and quality. You have a great voice and personality for this. I changed my color wheel and the buzz stopped! THANKS
Glad it helped!
Fixed my HD141x color wheel. Thanks for sharing this video. Super quiet now.
Thank you so much, Frank, for this wonderful video. I was able to replace the color wheel by following your instructions. Thanks again for your great help and keep up the great work!
You are very welcome Paul! I am really glad to hear it worked out. That projector will serve you very well for plenty of years.
cant beleieve that actually worked!
Thank you for your video… i just Fixed my Optomo HD29Darbee.
Awesome!! so glad to hear it, Thanks for letting me know it was helpful. Enjoy your projector!!
Great video! Can't wait to open mine up. Have a similar Optoma model experiencing the same issue after a new lamp. It's our main TV so we're definitely missing it. I believe this will save me from sending it to Optoma. Thanks so much! 😃😃😃🙌🏼
Hey man thanks so much! This fixed my projector! Work like a charm… still loud a bit but it buys me time to buy another color wheel. So thanks!
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Had the same problem. Thanks for helping me repair my unit!
Brilliant. This worked for me on a different model Optoma projector
Just fixed the exact same projector for the exact same problem.thanjs.
Thanks Frank. This was the exact problem that needed solving! And because of your video, I was able to!
That's awesome to hear! This is exactly why I do the videos. For comments like this.
@@GabeScelta Thank you for taking the time to offer a possible solution! Sadly, this did not solve the problem. Ahwell, it was six years old.
I have some doubt regarding my vivitek projector power supply board can you help me.
Hi dude,
your videos are very cool.
i have a trouble with my 4k projector OPTOMA UHD60 .
Great vid, Frank. Any ideas where I could get one of those lens caps from?
If you are in the USA, I have one or 2 I think. I have an email listed on the about page if you want to get in touch. Otherwise, I'd reach out to the parts folks I use in China. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com They have a network of e-recyclers that can get one for you.
Thank you so much frank about this video .My projector power supply totally off do you have any idea?I cheak power Supply Board no evidence burn capacitor and other components
You are very welcome! I have a few ideas. If they do not find the problem, you will need a new power supply. Unplug power and check these things:
1. Check the fuse (0 ohms).
2. NTC thermistor(green disk near fuse). Should be 6-10ohms
3. Verify bridge rectifier with diode test
Do you suggest anything else
Best regards Dave
@@FixitFrank thank you so much for your answer.Because I want badly to buy the optoma hd28e but was scared of the maintenance of it ant its life spam.for movie watching do you prefer DLP over rpsons 3LCD?,
Because I am between the optoma HD28a and epson EF 11 lazer
Thanks so much. I fixed mine with a similar issue thanks to this great fixit video !!! ❤awesome ❤
Thanks man, I appreciate that
Only parts I can find are from China so would be stuck with that
Nice video! Piece of black tape solved my problem 😅 THX
Make sure your color wheel wire is in the right way. I did that before. Its easy on that model.
@@FixitFrank Thanks! Switched it and the lamp turned on and had an image for a bit. Started flashing different colors though and then after a couple minutes it shut down with a lamp error (red lamp led and flashing red power led)
Thanks to buzzing wheel sound, I realized the wheel was causing the image quality to degrade. The image is do much better with the new wheel.
It should be almost exactly the same process. I wonder where Optoma bought these? They seem to fail like clockwork after a few years.
@@FixitFrank I actually have the Optoma HD25-LV and that old crate color wheel is still going...i guess they were better maybe.. Hi Frank
Thanks for the amazing videos.
Cheers
Marcelo
Hi Marcelo, it does sound like a color wheel, aside from the line. I've never seen a vertical line caused by a color wheel. That said it might be a visual artifact of the wheel error.
I use a company out of china called Time projector for parts. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com is the email. Be sure to remove the color wheel and take pics of it and the label on the wire. Send the pics with the email and they will take good care of you. They take paypal and ship world wide. You're much closer than I am so I imagine shipping is very reasonable.
Frank at the start of the video you said the bulb looks OK! What would you be looking for if you thought the bulb wasn't OK. Thanks again.
@@FixitFrank Nice one Frank I shall look forward 👍
Hello,
I've go an Optoma GT1080E.
@@FixitFrank Thank you sir! I'm located in Canada. I'll start with the lamp replacement.
@@FixitFrank Hey Frank, did you have a chance to look at the vid ?
for some reason, your comment was put in the "held for review" thing.
Thanks
I have an issue whit my optoma, "blocked (died fan), i replace it with new one, same brand and specs, but when i hit power button starts to boot the projector and the fan starts to spin, but after a few seconds (40s) the projector wont detect the fan is working, and just turn off to protect it. its an GT1080 the bulb and other pices looks great. any idea :(
Does it show a temp error when it shuts down now?
replaced color wheel , and both fans in HD28dse and still get a fan locked message and it shuts down. tested all fans and color wheel are running, going crazy any suggestions
Ugh,. the dreaded fan lock error.
@@FixitFrank thanks again! Will check tomorrow and let you know how it went.
Thanks for the video! Did the new color wheel help reduce the sound by any chance?
It did!
Sure! frank@fixfrank.com
frank this is an awesome video, my colorwheel had a missing mark and I used electrical tape, think that will last awhile?
Glad it worked! I suspect the tape will last a little while but I do know the glue they use will get soft. One thing that I have been meaning to try is using black automotive touchup paint. I know of people who have used it with great success. The goal is to put something there that will not reflect the IR light. If the material does that, then it will work.
@@FixitFrank Electrical tape doesnt seem to work, the projector is hanging in but the colors are all off, so I need another solution, I am guessing a sharpie will melt
@@FixitFrank going to try llp tape next
Another guy who posts here suggested touch up paint for cars. I want to try it myself. You can get those little touch up paint tubes at auto parts stores pretty cheap.
Great fixing, Frank
Thanks Andrew! I appreciate that
Hello,
I think you can just remove the color wheel without taking the lamp housing out. Remove the 2 screws from color wheel housing into the light colored metal base, and then remove the 2 screws that actually hold the black housing to the sheetmetal. Done in 1min...
That didnt seem to work for me. I dont see how you would clear the mounting bracket for the lamp.
@@FixitFrank Thank you very much. I will email you
Thanks for this video!
If you are careful you can repair the end but if you need a new wire/connector they are available.
hi and thanks again for the reply! is there any way i can reach you directly? facebook maybe?
@@Andx12 frank@fixfrank.com!
Thanks for the interesting tear-down video. My bulb blew in so installed a new lamp. Now shows a solid red power and solid red lamp. The manual isn't clear to me on this, any suggestions?
Are you getting any fans or other noises when you try to start it? Also is the cover installed?
@@FixitFrank Thanks for the reply. You're right, the cover was the issue. I had not re-installed in order to simply test the bulb installation... Poking around troubleshooting, I noticed the latch which the cover depresses. Figured it out from there. Thanks again.
Excellent video. Is it possible to make a video on BENQ TH530?
Спасиба Алексей! I do not have one for the TH530 at the moment. Are you having trouble with one? They are all very similar so many of the same issues are common on other brands.
I'm facing fan locked problem in optoma same model
Its probably that blower fan. But I would check my video on trouble shooting DLP projector fans. I go into more depth there.
Are you sure you need to remove the lightbulb basket to get to the color wheel? I'm getting mixed answers on this and from looking at your video, it looks like you could actually get access to it to swap it. I have the HD27 model so I'm not sure if that changes much.
hey man! so i followed this repair and put everything back together but now it seems the color wheel won’t start, as in i power up the unit and press ‘on’, i hear a slight click but the fan nor the color begin spinning. pretty sure i have all the components in place
any idea what’s going on?
FixitFrank that’s exactly what the problem was, i rewatched your video and realized how simple and dumb of a problem i had hahaha
thank you for your content, it literally saved me $300
@@Jamzamurai Ive only done it myself like 100 times! Glad it worked out
Superb video brother.. Keep up the good work
Thanks a ton :)
O need help for reset optoma projector.
This was a big help. Thank you.
Remember when he replaced the color wheel in that NEC projector
Thanks for this - my HD27e is very similar- same chassis- 2 fans though. Mine got really noisy, then gave the fan lock error. Stripped it down and found a sticker had come off a component on the PSU board and fouled the main (large) fan.
I just replaced my color wheel off this however I’m guessing that’s not the problem with mine. 🤦🏻♂️
What kind of problem are you experiencing?
Hi, good video. I have a uhd60 4k optoma projector. The 4k HDMI port is faulty and I need to replace the entire PCB. Can you recommend a dealer where I can get one? Thank you
I mean the entire the input PCB.
that is pretty new for finding that part. Optoma is the only source I know of for now. In a few more years there will be after sales options but as of now I cant think of any.
I have my optoma projector here and both the lamp light and power light come on red at the same time and nothing on the projector itself works or turns on
Your trigger isn’t probably being activated by the cover lid. Or your lamp is broken. Most likely the first
Can ya fix mine I'll pay ya, or do you know any good Optoma repair men?
Tengo uno de esos pero el ventilador no jira
Hey Frank I have an epson 3700, the power and lamp lights blink when turned on. Fans run but no picture, any ideas

@@FixitFrank thanks again will let you know how it goes.
Is the fan making all that noise?
Once its on the ceiling you don't hear it.
@@FixitFrank I have the same projector. I replaced the color wheel a week or two ago and it’s much quieter now!
@@H-RutherfordHill I love the picture on these. what a wonderful projector.
Hd25e click noise only when pressing “ on” with remote
Hard to say sight unseen. Could be few things. Could be a main board failure or power supply. The click is a good sign though. But as far as I know, it's not a simple thing like a fuse or fan. One thought is to check the color wheel. If the glass failed it might have jammed and the click is the wheel trying to spin. The color wheel must spin up first before the lamp and fans come on.
Do you fix items for the public lol? Can I send you my projector to fix? Its making a noise like this but i dont want to break anything. Lol
Most certainly! I mostly do this with my day job but I will work on whatever really. I enjoy it. I have an email listed on the about page if you want to get in touch. If its doing the color wheel thing, thats an easy fix.

High temperature Kapton tape
It’s still noisy!
not like it was. In fact, I am still running this one at home and used it 2 days ago. Running beautifully.
Chirpy sound when you turn it on is normal!
