Great video. it gave me the confidence to easily install a new color wheel. My original lamp exploded after 4000 hours, so I ordered a new lamp and color wheel. FYI, you don't need to completely remove the lamp enclosure you can just remove the screws and pull the lamp enclosure up an inch to remove the color wheel. The projector is now brighter more colorful and quiet again. Well worth the $80 lamp $40 color wheel and a couple hours of work.
Glad I searched to see if anybody else did a video on this before I made one lol. Just changed mine as it was making the same noise! Managed to get a colour wheel from eBay for £30 and works great
Got an Optoma HD141X that's about 5 years old now. Replaced the lamp & had this same noise happening. I'm glad it was easy to replace the color wheel, since it's whisper quiet once again, but I question the engineering of this model. The plastic mounts are next to screws that get super hot from the lamp & have started melting. Another screw hole mount for the color wheel assembly, also plastic, snapped after becoming super brittle from the amount of heat in this chassis. Everything still assembles back together w/o issue & it still works without a hitch. At the time I got it for 50% off of Newegg, which originally listed this 1080p model for $1200. I'd be pissed to have this bad of a design, if I paid that much for it. As is, I'm irritated that even a $600 product (due to Cyber Monday discount) wasn't really thought out properly & seems to be engineered to fail only after a short amount of time. Will probably go w/ another brand after I get my money's worth out of it.
Thanks loads!!! I have a HD141X, and by the looks of it, it's the same color wheel enclosure! I'm definetely going to by a new one and replace now to see if I can make it less noisy!! Thanks a lot!
All you needed to buy was a $3 aerosal dust can and sprayed the color wheel bearing to get the dust out and alcohol for the glass. Mine was vibrating but after cleaning, it has been working for over 2 years.
My optoma eh501 flashes orange (power button). All I did was open up the top to look inside and now it wont turn on. Any idea on what I might have done to it? Everything looks attached and in good condition. (The reason I took the top off was because the ac power port had issues, it was very sensitive and if the cord moved at all it would lose power).
Awesome! Thanks for such an informative video. Looks to me like my Optoma GT1080 is the exact same steps and layout, so I am going to attempt this as soon as a new color wheel arrives. Definitely think this will fix mine as well! Thanks again for the tutorial!
on my optoma the color wheel doesn't go away, need to apply a lot of pressure to take it away? I unscrewed everything and removed the lamp holder and fan, but not the color wheel bracket
Going to try to see if this works for my 1080GT. Opened up projector and it looks like color wheel ribbon is partially melted. Just got a new one coming this week. If it works, it is great. If it doesn't, at least I tried spending $40 to save a $800 investment and learned a lot along the way - to never buy another Optoma projector again. Got a 20+ year old Dell MP2100 and it still works with no issues...
your colorwheel has some brownish burnt on crud. Mine has that too. Two little burnt/melted on cruds. I think they make it out of balance, and cause that noise. And it figures I just broke my replacement while trying to get it all reseated. I think I figured out what angle to take for my next replacement (nearly $30 down the drain).
Hello will you please help me! I changed the color wheel and I think I put it all back together, but when I turn it back on, it shuts back off and the lamp indicator is a solid red color.
I have a BenQ MX722 which was making a rattling noise on starting up, but working, for about 2 weeks. Then today the projector stopped working at all and the lights indicate CW start failure. Is there a way I can fix without buying a whole new color wheel?
Thank you my brother, Could you tell me where to buy the color wheel? I have seen many suppliers by ebay but I would appreciate it if you would recommend me the best one for
Just another voice to add to the thank you's :) projector back up & running & good as new. ( though I admit I got an electronics friend to follow your instructions & do it for me )
Thanks for the interesting tear-down video. My bulb blew so I installed a new lamp. Now shows a solid red power and solid red lamp. The manual isn't clear to me on this, any suggestions?
there is a metal safety lever that needs to be pushed. Make sure that is pushed by the lid going over the lamp. if the lid is not placed it will not run it. You may push that with something to test the projector.
So I have the optoma EH341, looks basically the same as yours, I think it might only be sold to companies so it's hard to find info on it. So last time I tried to clean a projector I destroyed it lol used an air can to get dust out and it got inro places it shouldn't have. The inside of this newer one (new to me) is covered in dust, I can't find any filter on it and the manual shows the same projector as mine but with spots to take off to access filter, but for some reason mine has no spots that come off like it shows (literally 2 solid pieces of plastic encase the entire thing, where is your filter and how do you access it? And what is the best way to completely clean this thing out without risking damaging the mirrors, color wheel, bulb and projector? Thanks in advance man great video
Thank you for the video - I have an optoma GT750E short throw projector has a bad color wheel (same noise as yours, one piece of glass came unglued and fell off the wheel) 1) can that be reglued onto the wheel? 2) Where can I get a new wheel? 3)In the process of opening the projector I tried to unclip that flat ribbon cable to the "controls" and the end (clip) came off (fell apart). Where can I get a new ribbon cable?......

sxrd211 hi and thank you for your reply after I left this comment a few weeks later all the focus went on the projector and picture became very foggy I dismantled the optical array and cleaned everything very carefully but never got a clear picture again so ended up buying a new projector the same one again as it happens now I have the old one for spare parts as all the electronics work fine i think it just needs a new optical assembly .
I have a optoma hd141x, I've followed all instructions but I get the red lights come on and no bulb light I've replaced the bulb and the colour wheel Please help!!!!!!!
There's a contact sensor to test if the casing is closed. If this isn't pressed the led will be red and it won't start up. Just make sure you close it properly and it should work. Might be another issue as well, like bad cable connections.
I have Optoma TW 605 ST. Replaced bulb, disassamble and cleaned inside gently with air pressed from compressor. Assambled everything but have light coming inside somewhere... One big bright spot and many smaller... Anyone can help?

Does anyone who owns an Optoma HD26 ever had the power LED turn pink? I went to use my projector yesterday and when I plugged it in the power button LED was pink and the projector would not turn on at all. Does anyone know what it means?
if the segments was damaged or picture is discolor or motor make noise, you need to replace it. at any time, it is possible to broken the segments, it is very fragile. once motor goes bad, it will make noise, or picture discolor. about its motor, as its offical data, it can work about 20000h, actually, it will make noise or discolor after 3- 4 years. please make sure your projector work under clean condition, it will be good for expanding service life.
Great fix, but it amezes me that the color wheel does not have color green in it since red green & blue are the basic colors to create all colors, but in this color wheel i do see color yellow & orange aside from dark pink and blue but no green, so how is color green achieved? Did someone else on youtube had wondered this too.
I don't know the specifics of the function, but somehow or other, it matters whether something is reflecting or projecting light. If you mix yellow and blue crayons, you get green, even though something like a monitor doesn't work that way. It's weird.
Markworth well for what i know is that with paint if you combine blue & yellow together ,you will get green, but with light green is a basic color so if you want color yellow, you need to mix green & red together ,so if this color wheel uses yellow & crayon blue together to get color green, that will blow my mind. BTW there are color wheels with only red, green and blue colors on it but don't give a wide color spectrum i suppose. Also there are camera sensors and monitors with red, green ,blue and white in in for true white thus a wider spectrum.
On more budget models they probably cut some colors to make it cheaper. It can probably combine the colors by taking the blue and yellow and ultimately combining it through the projector. So while yes it won't do the best greens, this isn't a problem.
Can anyone help me? I had my optoma HD28DE and it just shut down. 2 (power and lamp) lights are red. At first I thought it was the fan because it was loud before it shut down. However, I have been researching this for a long time time and wondering if it's just the lamp or the color wheel... or all 3 (lamp, wheel, fan) how can I test... who can help me ?
I say thank you for the video very much. I would love the HD26 from cleaning to see video. Where I find it or you would be able to charge a video like this? Thanks!

I fixed my projector, I have an HD 141x model and it looks the same under the top. I replaced my color wheel, and now when I turn on the projector, the power button will be blue for a little bit. Almost like its trying to start up. Then, two red lights will come on. One red light by the power button, and one light by the lamp button. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is the error I keep getting? Very nervous because I don't want to get a new one.
Kimi Kentner I have the same problem after replacing the color wheel. Tries to start up but then two red lights come up. One red light by the power button and the other by lamp button. Were you able to fix this??
Same here. I've tried re-seating the ribbon cable attached to the lid quite a few times, and can't seem to power it back up. 2 blinking red lights (power & lamp)
Fixed the two blinking red lights. Looks like the cover sensor (the little metal clip near the lamp and color wheel that he clamps down when testing at the end of the video) wasn't being pressed down far enough when I closed the case up. I added a home made widget to the top of the switch to make sure it engaged and that seemed to do it. I also made sure the lamp power and the 2 ends of the ribbon cable on the inside of the cover were inserted and snug.
Thanks for this! Just replaced my color wheel and now my HD26 is silent again and brighter with a crisper, cleaner image! Well worth it !

Thanks for this video! I was able to pull apart my 1080 model and replace the color wheel, no more obnoxious noise!
Just wanted to say thanks, followed this pretty much step by step with my Optoma GT1080 (Non Darbee Edition) and it was a simple easy fix.
hey Matthew, could you please direct me to where you purchased a replacement wheel? Hoping to fix mine as well. thanks!
Do you have a link to the color wheel, I have a 1080 as well that just went out

Most likely either the power cable to the lamp isn't plugged in right or the ribbon cable isn't plugged in right.
