Once again one of your videos saves my ass ;) had some shadowy portion in the bottom right corner of my PJD6531w it looked like some kind of missalignment in the light path or something (except it was still getting partial color so whatever obstruction existed must have been in the back focal plane). Anyways when I opened it up to look I broke the color wheel as I was trying to fix it's alignment, as it was spinning and rubbing on the metal chassis, probably due to warping from excess heat or something(?). So I ordered a new one from China, widened the mounting holes for the colorwheel bracket, reinstalled it so it wouldn't rub. Then I re-assembled the whole unit, tried to turn it on and there was no light. So then I thought, is the color wheel spinning and it wasnt... So then I wondered, what gets checked first the color wheel or the lamp. So I open up google and type "fixitfrank no light" and this video comes up, and by the 11 min mark you already explained that the color wheel should spin up first before the lamp goes on. So I try reversing the motor ribbon cable on the color wheel, and ay-presto, it spins up and everything works again!! :D I was about to write my projector off as broken. It still has the shadowy ghosty region in the bottom right corner, but I can live with it, I do wonder where in the light path the misalignment/obstruction is. But honestly given the metal warped so badly that the color wheel was rubbing, and I needed to shift one of the mounting screws by over 5mm just to recenter it. I think it's probably a miracle it works at all ;) Huge thanks for your trouble shooting steps and explanations! You are the defacto goto guy for projector repair information :D
OMG you actually have a video "DLP Projector Light Tunnel Example and Alignment" that talks about light tunnel missalignment, :D I may be able to get rid of that unsightly shadow yet still!!! hahaha (or break the color wheel again trying!) EDIT: I just watched the video, it's really as simple as turning two screws (while wearing UV glasses) an doing some percussive alignment :) I never would have imagined! Just need to find the screws now maybe I'll save it for another day now that I know how easy it should be.
@@petersvideofile you might have to take the tunnel out and bend the spring behind it to push back but try the screws first. you will be fine! best of luck to you

Hey Frank, thanks for recording and sharing your videos. I used them as a reference for disassembling and assembling back my Benq projector when I had to clean the optical block from dust (ghost spots on the screen). Interestingly my model is Benq W1110 which looks exactly the same as HT2050, except couple of differences - W1110 has only one speaker, but has a composite video input. I suspect W1110 was sold in Europe (I bought it in the UK) whether HT2050 was released in the US market. Right now I'm trying to diagnose and fix the infrared receivers that stopped working (remote control works fine). Do you perhaps have any schematics of the Benq W1110 or HT2050? I'm looking for IR receiver model (both the one soldered into the mainboard and the front one on the wire). I tried to test them, but I think they are dead (capacitors around them are fine). Unless I tested them improperly :D I'm not an expert... Anyway, I'd like to replace them but don't know the model I should buy...
Id like to open my dlp projector and clean it all out as fans have gotten very loud and the intake vents were covered in cat hair so I assume its packed with cat hair but I am nervous about breaking it somehow
Fantastic video showing how to disassemble and reassemble this unit. I hope you might have some repair knowledge on why a 2050a would have a super dim image after replacing the lamp. I bought a new lamp on pureland supply to replace my original lamp and when i turned everything back on, the image is so dim I can barely see anything even with all the lights off and curtains closed. I tried swapping back to the original bulb that was working previously, and it does the same thing. I am starting to wonder if the ballast is going out. Have you seen this issue before, or do you have some troubleshooting tips I might be able to follow? Now that I know how to bypass that top cover switch, I might measure my wattage out of the lamp molex connector.
I have to stop you. Do not under any circumstances connect a meter to the lamp socket. That is the best way to destroy your meter and possibly explode the ballast and shock yourself. The ignition voltage is many KV(3-5KV). No normal meter or leads are rated for that voltage. Plus it runs at high frequency so you can't get an accurate measurement. Ballasts almost always work or don't work. It's almost impossible for them to partly work. There is a stronger chance that you have an optical issue, light tunnel issue, PFC circuit or something like that. What caused you to replace the old lamp? That might give me a better suggestion for you.
@@FixitFrank whoa! Thanks for the heads up. I knew it was high voltage but that's wild. I wanted to change the lamp being it was the original from 2018 and had several thousand hours on it. Is there a specific procedure to aligning a new lamp? I had read on some forms that people were noticing better brightness by making small adjustments to the lamp. I was trying to do that this weekend but kept having to make a move, put the cover back on and power it back up. Now that I see there is a limit switch for the cover, I can play with the alignment.
@@FixitFrankI figured out my issue and have a functional projector again. You were on the right path with the optical path. With being able to keep that top lid open by pressing the limit switch, I was able to mess with the lamp and realize that moving it around does not help all that much. I powered down the unit and took the lamp out to look down the pathway and noticed my filter wheel was grungy looking. There was dust all over so I started cleaning that, but the main issue was the filter wheel itself had a haze on it, almost like if you take a camera from in the AC to outside and the lens fogs up, but thicker. I took down the whole unit like how you did in this video, pulled the filter wheel out and cleaned it and now I finally have a usable picture. I appreciate the advice!
Hello, my BenQ W1090 won’t power up. When I plug it and try to power up, the power light blink green slowly for about a minute. Then the power light blink rapidly red (2 blink in 1 second, 1 second off…) All the other light are off, lamps and fan doesn’t start up. The projector is 6 years old, the lamp is probably 2 years old with less than 500 hrs and still look in good shape. Everything seems relatively clean inside, visually all the capacitors seems fine… Would really appreciate if you might suggest a way to fix it.
This is a difficult issue to troubleshoot. The flashing red power light means something internal is preventing the projector from booting into standby. the green flashing is the bootup but if it can't finish booting the red light flashes with the other indicators off. If I had it here, I'd start by checking the low voltages to the mainboard as well as the thermal breaker. if the low voltage from the power supply seems normal, then I'd check the regulators on the mainboard itself. I'd also see if the 380dc to the ballast is working. i don't think this is a simple repair personally like some bloated caps or a color wheel. its going to be something more involved in my opinion.
Hey frank good to see you back. My Optoma you fixed still working great ! So recently I installed 4k 8MP security camera system and thinking of buying a BenQ HT3550 4K to replace my W1070. For multi purpose use. Is there a better cheap reliable obtion ?
Not in that price range and being 4K. The only thing i would be careful with is the pixel shift in the benQ. I have heard that it can be noisy to some people. the solenoid flicking back and forth can make vibrations that are audible. Otherwise everything I heard about the HT3550 is good. It apparently is a very good option for the price.

I'm half and half. They have definitely improved. i was even running a christie laser for a bit and liked it. Although recently I went back to a sony lamp based unit. I still think lamp based is better for long term use if you have a supply of lamps. Solid states biggest problem is that when the laser sources start to fail, you are out of luck. I think solid state is going to be more of a throw away device. especially once they get cheap enough. I get the convenience but I still see a place for lamps.
I'm so sorry, I will never work on an epson ever again. They are not built to be repaired and Epson will not sell parts to aftermarket repair people. I was able to repair about 20% of the epsons I saw. Mainly due to the lack of parts. Epson is strongly against the "right to repair" and builds their devices to fail right out of warranty and will not help people after that. If you take it to an epson service center, they will tell you it needs a mainboard and optics and the cost will be more than a new projector. Then they will try and sell you something else. My recommendation is never buy epson again. Buy Sony or JVC if you don't like DLP. They will last far longer. Drives me nuts because there are so many epsons out there.
Thanks for the video! I have a BenQ HT 3050. Recently the lamp exploded and then got replaced. I did vacuum inside of the unit before installing the new lamp. The unit is working now again, but it always shuts down automatically after running for a couple of minutes with the “power indicator light” staying on red and the “temp indicator light “ on green. According to the user manual, the colors of the indicator lights suggest a “Fan 3 Error”. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Many thanks!!
There is probably still a chunk of glass inside the lamp blower fan. it doesn't take much to jam them up. Id remove the new lamp and use a qtip or skewer or finger to reach inside the fan opening and spin the fan. I bet a piece of glass falls out. I dont mean the large obvious fan but the small squirrel cage fan that blows into the lamp housing. Its usually to the left of the color wheel when you are looking at the wheel straight on. Sometimes only the duct is visible which is why you might need a skewer or qtip to reach in.
Hey Frank, love the videos. I followed your other video on cleaning out my ht2050 as I was getting dust spots. Now my color wheel is not spinning! Any ideas on how I may fix it? I did the voltage check per this video and it is 0.19 V - what we would expect for a bad color wheel? Thanks! Brendon
False alarm. I took everything apart again and when I put it back together it was working. I suspect the board wasn’t seated properly, as I checked all the connectors multiple times. Also, my dust spots are completely gone. Thanks again for the videos!
Hi Frank, watched a few of your video's and I must say I really enjoy all of them! Unfortunately none of your video's really was about my problem... I have a W1060 that worked fine until it suddenly switched itself off. I cannot get it back on now. Symptoms are: if you press power it clicks a few times (relay sound) and then the power light starts flashing orange. The device is very clean, all fans are clean and can be turned and have no dust. Any clue?
Right. It flashes the light to cool down as it thinks the lamp lit and shut off. I would try a new lamp personally. That is almost always the issue with these sort of things and without knowing that you have a 100% good lamp, you will run in circles. Just make sure its a decent lamp and not some amazon junk knock off. Also make sure you can return it if you find the new lamp does the same thing. without knowing if the lamp is good, its really hard to suggest checking anything else.
Dear Frank! I really need your help :) I have a Benq W1070 which once at start burned the ballast (really visible burn signs). I've replaced the ballast and bulb then it worked for 2-3 minutes. After long diagnosis I've detected there's 0V on Blower fan's red pin, so it won't rotating in my projector. I've checked the fan itself, it rotates if i give 6-9V DC to it, but no voltage from projector, and no lights up just flashing red lamp error. Would you help me suggesting more tips on diagnose, what to measure (fan controller chip?). Thanks!
Frank I replaced the lamp of my Optoma hd20 with an Osram bulb of 190 watts and it worked.The original Osram bulb is of 230 watts.Will I have any problem with this change?Will this burn out or not? Thank you.
I have a HT2050A that is almost 4 years old, went on vacation so I unplugged it. Came home plugged it in and turned it on to hear a pop and light smoke come out the side. Now the power button is red and no light on temp or lamp and it’s unresponsive. Any advice or hope would be greatly appreciated
Id have to look at it to be sure but that sort of sounds like either an MOV, thermistor or MosFET let the smoke out. The PTC thermistor would be my first guess. Its going to be mains power supply related for sure.

I have an Epson 2150 Home Cinema projector that’s having issues. How can I get you to fix it?

Hi, when was the lamp replaced? That sounds like a failed lamp. does the lamp LED turn on after a few minutes when you start it up?
@@FixitFrank Hi Frank, lamp was never replaced. No lamp led, only orange flashing power led. Manual says it is a cool down issue...

fan's yellow wire shows ~3.3V DC, red is 0.0V :(

You're likely okay. Those bulbs have a range about 50watts up and down. As long as it came from a reputable company I would not worry.
