Optoma GT1080 Darbee DLP Projector Color Wheel Replacement

  • I had someone send in their Optoma GT1080 Darbee with a lamp error and making a horrendous noise. The index mark had fallen off the wheel and the rest showed evidence of running too hot. It looks like there had been dust inside at one point which is very common for many projectors.
    I verified the color wheel issue with replacing the index mark and then I actually had a used/good wheel to try to be 100% sure. Once I talked to the owner, I purchased a new color wheel, which I installed about a week later. Thankfully due to the magic of video, you get to see it all at once.
    The only other thing I found was that the lamp assembly was using a known "not good" lamp inside. I re-used the housing with a good Osram bare lamp.
    www.purelandsu... Here is the lamp if you need one. Use YT50 in the coupon box for 5% off.
    Thanks for watching \o/

      Soo much heat! That IR block coating keeps a lot of the heat out. If it get in there, you start cooking things, plastic first, metal second. Never a good thing. Metal and plastic taste terrible cooked. Or raw for that matter.

      Somewhere on a VHS tape there is a video of me and a few friends cooking or at least re-heating a cheese steak sandwich with a halogen studio lamp. This was back in the early 90s in our TV production club. I recall it heated the sandwich thoroughly and almost melted the chair.

    You are a god-send. My GT1080 Darbee was making clicky sounds and failed to start 3x before powering down with red error LEDs. New bulb didn't fix it. I followed your video, pulled out the color wheel, cleaned it, and noticed the black tape was dried and partially flecked off. I re-purposed some of the black tape that was already within the projector (covering some ribbon cable connectors - assuming those aren't strictly necessary), cut it to size, and placed it on top of the missing portion. Boots up fine. I'll let it run as long as this fix works, but at least now I know how to replace the color wheel when the time comes. Many thanks!
    P.S. I promise not to buy Amazon bulbs from now on. That's another take-away I got from your video. ;)

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      Awesome!! Great job!! That tape should hold up fine for now. It may come off again, but at that point you can get a new wheel or try some "stove/engine" paint and draw the mark on with that. The only thing it does is break the IR beam for the index sensor. Any matte finish, higher temp handing material would work. I would not use electrical tape personally but I have heard of people using it and it working. I think the glue gets too soft when it's hot personally.
      Thanks for letting me know the video helped out! That is exactly why I post these!

    Knock-off lamps. You get what you pay for. Keep away from them everybody. they do more harm than good. I tried the transformer tape but I still had to superglue it. High peed and centrifugal effect then to throw the tape off. You need to leave the tape for 24-48 hrs for the adhesive to cure and bond solid rock. Good video again. I have quite a few oem new c wheels. Let me know if you need any.

    What a coincidence, today I received a replacement fan for my gt1080darbee, the original fan was spinning "fine" but when I installed the new one, I noticed this one does adjust it's rpms after powering up, something the original fan wasn't doing anymore, so far the new fan has resolved the "fan locked" message that would pop up after about a minute of powering up the projector.

    Is it possible to replace the fans in these projectors with something quieter? My room layout makes it necessary for my sitting position to be pretty close to the mounted projector and it's pretty loud. Watching your video makes me think I could easily get into the projector to access the fans.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 місяців тому

      hi, unfortunately its not an option. optoma designed these to be as quiet as possible but still move enough air. There are other specs to replacing fans that need to be met and so far all of the other options(noctua especially) will not work. Noctua fans don't move enough cfm(which is why they are quieter) and they do not have the same error reporting mechanism. Computers have a lot more room for variance in fans which is why you can switch them around. Projectors on the other hand have very specific cooling needs and if you change them, it almost always causes issues. Your best bet for noise would be looking into building a hush box. You can put noctua fans in those and that would work but you can't swap them into a projector. it will just throw a temp error and sit there.

    • @robertgamache1077
      @robertgamache1077 6 місяців тому

      I considered making a hush box that was open on the side opposite my seating position so I didn't have to mess with sourcing special glass. Do you have any tips for building a hush box? My ceilings are pretty low so I will have to keep it low profile. I was thinking about using AC infinity fans in the hush box to help control temps. I like the image of the optoma and the throw ratio is perfect for my room. I'm pretty locked into that throw ratio too so it's heard to just buy a different projector. @@FixitFrank

    I replaced the bulb in this same projector, I turn it on and the bulb will turn on for a second then it will stop. Is this a color wheel issue or a bulb issue? The fan sounds normal and there is minimal dust. I have had it for 4 years without any issues

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      I would start by checking the color wheel for that index mark. Also check the sensor for dust covering it.
      The color wheel controls the lamp. If the projector senses any abnormal behavior by the color wheel, it will shut down.
      I'd start with that. check the wheel. You don't have to take it all apart, just remove the color wheel sensor and see if the sensor is dusty and you can also see if the wheel lost its index mark or not.
      I suspect your issue is color wheel related more than lamp related. If the old lamp was not that old, you may be able to return the new lamp. If it was nearing the end of life, keep the new lamp and save the old for a spare.

      It depends on the version of the GT1080 if I recall correctly. I believe there are 3 variants and 2 use the same wheel and one does not. What I would suggest is remove it and take a picture. Then send that picture to the folks I use (gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com) and they can get you a new one. Otherwise, I would search ebay for your mode of GT1080 and add color wheel to the end.

    I changed out my color wheel because the color is off. The color is correct but the spinning is super loud. It is possible that I got a defective color wheel?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      Maybe, but I kind of don't think it is likely. I would check to make sure there isn't a wire or piece of tape or something that fell near it when you put it together. Double check your rubber washers on the back to verify one isn't pushed through and making it a little cock-eyed. I personally have never seen a new defective color wheel, but I would be wrong to say it is impossible. Go back over the projector and see if you can verify the source of the buzz. You can start it up without the lamp and the cover off to the side. I do know that foam under the wheel and the plastic around it can be warped and loose from heat. I have definitely seen the foam come loose and push against the wheel.
      Rule out everything else first. Like I said, I wont say it is impossible. But it might just be a piece of the projector a little too close to the hub or the wheel.
      I'd expect to hear more of a grinding than a buzzing if the hub was bad. If its buzzing/humming loudly look for stuff interfering with the wheel. If its grinding/scraping looks for metal near the wheel and if not, then take the wheel back out and hold the back while you start it up and hold it. You will know 100% then if its bad or not.
      after thought: I did have one that the little metal bit on the end of the light tunnel somehow warped or shifted and was rubbing. I buzzed it back with a dremel (maybe half millimeter) and it was fine after that.
      Good work by the way! Worse case you replace the wheel again. Either way the projector will be good as new.

      @jasonglover8717 3 роки тому

      @@FixitFrank It did end up being a defective color wheel. I put the old one back in to see if it produced the same sound and verify if the plastic washers were properly aligned. I couldn't get the old one to replicate the same sound so I got a replacement and it's back to working good as new. Thanks for making this video. It saved me a ton of money.

    hey mr. frank, could you please help me?!! I just have two questions and you seem like an expert so i’m going to shoot my shot. So, i have an optoma HD39Darbee 1080p. i’ve had it for a couple years and use it for gaming. my problem is that it makes the room incredibly warm (with open, good airflow), so i was wondering if attaching a metal heat sink to the bulb top plate would help cool it down, and if that makes sense? ADDITIONALLY, could I upgrade the bulb if I wanted to??? like are LED bulbs better, or is there anything i can swap it for to make it better!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      Projectors are hot. They make a good amount of heat. Adding a heatsink won't work. It's still making heat. And no there is no bulb upgrade. LEDs are far less efficient than arc lamps. Watt per lumen your current bulb is far brighter than an led of the same watts. You're only cooling options are for the room. Adding any cooling fans to the projector will just push the heat into the room more. That's why adding a heart(can't do that anyway) to a bulb won't work. The room is heated by the projector. You need to cool the room not the projector. That's how heat loading works. It's a little confusing to explain (I'm not a thermodynamics guy) but an Aircon or window fan is your only real option. Sorry I wish I had a more useful idea for you.

    Hi Frank, I have this projector that I was using for about 3 years. The bulb, as far as I can tell, went out. The colours would keep on changing when turned on and then the projector would turn off when with the lamp light flashing red. I tried to replace the bulb with an original OSRAM bulb but the project wouldn’t even turn on now and flashes the lamp light again. It did this with a different bulb as well.
    The original bulb when I took it out. The white rubber where the connector tie to the bulb was brittle and not like rubber. Don’t know if this was just due to heat of the bulb. The cooling fan seems to be running fine and the projector is clean from inside.
    What do you think it could be? I saw another video from you where you replaced the motherboard could that be the issue on mine one too?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      Hello! It sounds to me that your color wheel is the issue. The flashing colors and lamp shut down are a dead give away. However, be sure to either use your original lamp assembly and replace the bare bulb (Osram) or with a full assembly from a reputable seller (not Amazon). There is a special optical filter on the lamp assembly lens that cheap lamps do not use. It can cause lots of problems. The glass on the lamp assembly should have an obvious reddish color to the glass. If it's greenish it is not good. Must be the reddish tint. Do a search on my channel for HD26 color wheel and you will see the steps. The hd26 and gt1080 are identical in that regard.

      Hmm. Some models did ship with filters. It would be on the side if its installed. If not, you might have a fan problem that is manifesting as a filter. Check the menu and see if there is a 'filter timer' you can reset. It might be a model that was meant to have a filter but then was decided not to ship with one. They only ship with filters in areas that are known to be extra dusty.

    Hey Frank,
    Great video! Very informative. I have this exact same model projector and recently replaced the color wheel (with the help of this video). The projector worked fine for about a day before it started to make a loud electrical hum. After about a minute of humming, the lamp automatically shuts off and a service message pops up. Any thoughts on what went wrong? Should I try reinstalling the color wheel and hope for the best? Does the color wheel need to be synced in some fashion? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

      An electric hum is not something I can recall experiencing. Is it possible it's a mechanical cause and it sounds like an electric hum? If you can share a video where I can hear , that would be great. I have a few theories but they are dis jointed so I'd like to narrow it down.

      If you have a GT1080 or similar chassis, I would be very suspect of the color wheel. It seems that this series has that as a known issue. So much that I keep wheels in stock now. If you are around the 5 year mark or past that, then I would be highly suspicious of the wheel. They are roughly $40 so it is reasonable to replace and I suspect that will solve your issue. If you want to link a video of the noise, I can see if it sounds like a wheel issue.

      That will do it! I'd check eBay first since you might find a seller in Canada. If not, email my friend Crystal at Time Projector. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com She is really good and they ship DHL and take paypal. If they can't help you can email me. I think I have at least one if not more new wheels around for that model. It should be $40-60US on average. You could even try Optoma directly. I have had incredibly good experience purchasing from Optoma. You dont have to send the projector to them. They will sell you a wheel directly without having to be a service center which is nice of them to do.

    Hi Frank what do you think of this particular model? I need a few for using with flight simulation. It's pretty popular among many simmers due to the low cost. Id love to run 4k but 1080 is less taxing and we are using 3 in an array with a 3080 video card. I saw below that you think Optoma's quality is lacking now? What would be a better option?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому +1

      It's weird. When Optoma works they are good. It's like the design engineers were over ruled by bean counters(I'm sure this is a surprise to everyone...). The GT1080 seems to be built pretty well for the most part for a projector in that price range. They will have normal failures like lamps, fan and color wheels but the newer UHD series is the one that seems to be a lemon. I haven't worked on all of them yet but the folks I've talked to with them all complain about the dmd failing and the main board overheating.
      Being that you want a gt1080, the only thing you might want to try is some extra fans to get more air moving through. Having three close together (sims are so cool) would increase the heat but I don't think anything is inherently going to fail like the newer projectors. So far every gt1080 I have seen had a normal, consumable part fail. No main boards(well one but it was a lightening strike) just fans lamps, scratched lenses and color wheels.

      Did you replace your lamp anytime recently? If so, was it from Amazon? a bad UV/IR filter can cause these symptoms or a dirty/problematic color wheel index sensor.

    Thanks Frank for this amusing video. My Optoma HD39Darbee also makes such a high noise when I start it up, but after a few minutes the sound is silent again. My lamp is 1000 hours old / new? What I don't understand is why you put a piece of tape on the color wheel, is this also on a new color wheel? Why does the color wheel make such a high noise? My color wheel therefore makes that high sound for a very short time and does not disturb me. Is that noise getting worse and when should it be replaced? Where did you buy that color wheel (if I ever need to replace it)? I think I will have to do it myself because sending it to you is not a good idea, you are in the USA and that takes way too long i think .... Thanks in advance.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      The old color wheel had its index mark fall off from the heat. I replaced it with a new piece to make sure that was the issue and not something else. That is how the projector knows where the color wheel is during its rotation. The high speed noise was the motor trying to find its place but being unable to.
      I bought this wheel from China. If your wheel starts to get worse, it is easy to change like you saw. Shipping it to me would be way too expensive in just shipping. You will be able to tell because the image will flicker colors and possibly shut down. Or if the vibration noise gets real bad. Ebay is still a good source, but if you are in the UK, you might want to reach out to ChessGuru. He may have some already. No need to import them.

      Hi Mike, You're welcome! There are a few possibilities but going off of what you types, I suspect your color wheel is going bad, or the sensor is dirty, or if the lamp assembly was changed recently and it was a cheaper option, the ND filter on the lamp assembly is incorrect. There are some other possible causes but those are the most common I have seen.
