Solyanka is exactly what my babushka used to make a lot when I was younger! And she still does from time to time. I'm Finnish though but she had a thing for Russian delicacies.
Why would you need a cookbook for something that's a staple? Every true Slav subconciously know how to make those dishes. Even if he/she doesn't realise it.
You know what I love about Boris' cooking? He's got some legit equipment. His pots and pans are not cheap basic ones. Those are all proper sauce pots, saute pans and crock and stock pots with heavy bottoms. Like him. LOL! He's also got all types of real accessories like proper cake, breads and muffin pans, cooling racks, sheet pans, hotel pans, digital thermometers, mixing bowls and all kinds of other stuff that any chef would have no problem and be proud to cook with. Most of all, this nigga is neat, tidy and clean. The mess is obviously played up for his videos.

Solyanka is really popular in east Germany. I think they kept a lot of recipes from the Soviets and into the GDR times. Your potato salad is also very similar to what the german omas make. I love solyanka!

I made it for the first time today. I'm sure that it is western spy edition but came out great. I used garlic flavored summer sausage and half a clove of garlic . Also I only had dry parsley and lemon juice in a squeeze bottle. It came out fantastic.
I may just have to make this. There is nothing like it in regular american cuisine. No soup has pickles in it! Being that I have liked all Eastern European food I have tried thus far, I am certainly going to have to try this.

Made an improvised version of this using canned pasta sauce, tons of potatoes, garlic, cabbages and some chicken breast meatball thingy, etc. Probably not taste good as Boris's cooking, but still good enough to satisfy my family. Thanks, Boris!

Made an improvised version of this using canned pasta sauce, tons of potatoes, garlic, cabbages and some chicken breast meatball thingy, etc. Probably not taste good as Boris's cooking, but still good enough to satisfy my family. Thanks, Boris!
