A friend of mine made a map in this genre, GM_Solitude. It's a very expansive map, loads of small secrets and paths to it. It's a very errie map in parts, creeps you out, but there aren't any jumpscares. You'll probably need several playthroughs to find everything, but it's worth it. It took him several years to make it, so check it out, it's by far my favorite map in Gmod, even if I play Gmod more for sandbox stuff.

I have spent countless of hours on NIPPER's abstract maps, both on CS 1.6 and Gmod. They are my all-time favorite game maps ever and I cannot help but come back to them every now and then simply to walk around and vibe to the different rooms and songs. It's very nice to see someone covering these maps in a video.

There's something about the lighting in Source games (including Goldsrc and Source 2) That really make these maps hit different. For TF2, a lot of Conni's Trade maps are very Nipper inspired while still largely being thier own thing. You also have Xenon who made maps like MARIOKART, Cyberpunk and Harbl Hotel which has gone on to inspire their own subgenre of Abstract Source Engine Map

It made me really happy when I saw this video on my feed. It reminded me that years ago me made a map for portal 2 map called "abstract" and it was little me attempting to capture that source engine abstractness. Makes me want to make a sequel for it :)

These maps make me think specifically of the more recent radiohead online like art exhibit on epic games where you discovers these very strange abstract rooms and hallways that have strange music from their albums Kid A and Amnesia playing its a very like eye opening experience

i'd say my favorite liminal map is sky_archive_v2 made by shrimp in tf2. the map looks amazing and is full of secrets to explore. there's also a lot of songs to listen to as well
Abstract maps are great, they can offer something normal gameplay doesn't and allow you to be purely creative making them. I'm only familiar with ones in Portal 2, which often focus on impossible geometry.
Good stuff man, my favorite part of abstract design is that it’s such a weird window into someone’s brain. They had to practice and learn these techniques and clearly loved what they were doing; so we get to see the full extent of their creativity in a 3D space. It’s dope lol

the maps having Radiohead and Aphex Twin playing in the background wasn't surprising lol
I never really played Gmod but I put probably around a couple thousand hours (no joke) into MG servers on GO/1.6. Almost every course/deathrun/minigames/DM map had this nostalgic liminal feeling that i've never been able to fully experience in any game since. It really is a shame that a majority of these naps are now unplayable on servers because of Source2.
I really want to see more of this! I love exploring these kind of maps every fall. Really gets the nostalgia flowing.

One of my fav meme maps in TF2 is called Koth_wubwubwub, and is designed around tf2 themed dubstep. just a silly map that is fun to play with friends (and is reasonably balanced as well!)
Ima be real, I was so high that I felt the trip of these maps, and asked "why tf is he doing an outro" for what's felt like 3 minutes inatead of 8 haha, loving the videos 😍
