Easy Dragon Fruit Propagation and Pruning Technique
Вставка

- The time has come to begin moving the Epic dragon fruit, and the first step is pruning it down to size. Dragon fruit pruning is pretty simple: remove stems that are too long or unlikely to be productive. In my case, those were the ones growing all over my house.
As for dragon fruit propagation, take 8-12" cuttings, let dry for 5-7 days to callous over, and then plant them into pots, stake them up, and wait until you see new stem growth. That's really all there is to it!

The real question...what to do with all of these cuttings LOL
Give away mybe to a couple people if you like the idea
Pretty sure someone once said something along the lines of, sharing is caring. Though, I haven't listened to that with all of my ghost plant props that are covering almost every available flat surface in my yard right now.
Summer plant sale when?
Cover the new urban homestead in their vines.
Makes me want to try to grow one!
Since the pandemic I decided to start a garden and spend hours watching UA-cam videos. I have several favorites but I must say Kevin you are my #1 go to for information. I have read your book and you make everything so clear that even a novice can comprehend everything. I am 73 and have a little trouble hearing some of the shows, but voice is marvelous and clear as a bell. Thank you so much for all you do.
Likewise with me this guy is awesome
Happy 74th :)
Plandemic
As a new gardener, you are my hero. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do something I love.
First! I have three Vietnamese white dragon fruit cuttings that are starting to root now because of you, thank you!
This style of video playlist was super nice to watch. Seeing it go all the way from a baby cutting to this was perfect
I just love watching you take such amazing care of your plant babies. Your smile is so genuine.
Thank you so much!
The tour down memory lane growing your dragon fruit made my eyes watery I mean it especially cause I might receive my dragon fruit plants anytime tommorow or Thursday 😊 I'm so stoked about it!
So glad I saw this. I just planted five today and got a couple wrong. Now I’ve turned them around. Appreciate you taking the guesswork out if it! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank Kevin, for your good tips how to grow dragon fruit plant. I just started, so I am so excited to see my growing. Thank you again, I will let you know my progress on this big adventure in growing this exotic fruit.
Really beautiful touch on that Memory Lane section I loved it it reminded me of me and how much I love and care for my plants.
:)
I JUST got a dragon fruit plant yesterday and watched your entire series on it. I thought my you tube subscription list was messing up, showing me an old video of yours! Thanks for the update!
Nope, jus tanother update!
I have the same problem and need to prune and I was wondering about the direction to pot the cuttings. Glad I tuned into your channel. Thanks
Ready to go trim up mine now, thanks for the tips!
After cutting through flesh it’s good to coat in cinnamon, natural antiseptic, it’s also key time to angle cut to main stem to expose 1/2” for better rooting
I think I'm going to have to try and grow some dragon fruit . Quite an amazing feat you have done . Thank you for sharing
Have a great day
that's awsome...what i use to tie up trees are long strips of tyre inner tubing. works wonders and you find them everywhere...keep it up
Thanks Kevin
That was very helpful. I'm propagating some yellow dragon fruits
Love your channel! I've definitely learned a lot about dragon fruit and how to grow them. Thanks!
I bet over 90% of those cuttings take. The resilience of cactus and succulents never ceases to amaze me. Also, if I lived anywhere close to you I'd happily take those throwaways off your hands!
same here!
If you have any of those aerial roots near the bottom of your cutting, leave them on and put them in the soil when you pot the cutting. They will turn into underground roots and give your cutting a big head start on growing roots.
Love it. Great video!
This is actually so helpful, mine is still a baby but it’s so overgrown and I’d like to give some away so thank youuuu
Thank you so much for this method
Wow!! That’s a lot! 🤗🤗 can’t wait to plant mine 😁
Just the info I was thinking about before I pick up a few plants - North Jersey
Kevin… Thanks for this DF series. I grow them also, have had blooms that didn’t turn into fruit. I will try some of your tips this spring and summer.
The flowers are so beautiful and mildly fragrant. The little spines, OMG…
Like lethal weapons !!!
Take care and Thanks Again.
Debbie in N. Central Texas !
Since I’ve never had my questions answered here even after subscribing etc…. You need to pollinate with a non sterile version. I had the same thing happen to me . That variety bloomed but didn’t become fruit ….needed non sterile pollen. There’s other videos about self pollination
Nice 👍 thanks for Sharing your idea!
I made it to the end!! Now let's see if i'm as prosperous with my new cutting and plants!!
Oh my god the music absolutely killed me 😂😂😭😭
LOL
Awesome vid kevin.
I forgot to train and stake my brothers dragon fruit (4+ years)
Hopefully I can make som more cuttings from it!
Nice! We've been able to propagate well but not once getting them to flower. I think the pruning is going to make the difference as I've been to scared to trim back anything. Thank you for the tip!
Pruning sometimes seems to spur bud formation!
Thanks so much for the tips!
1000th like. That was the first time I’ve ever done that before and I have had youtube since 2010. AND its on a video about dragonfruits which are my favorite and my mind is absolutely diluted its 5am and ive been awake since 7 am yesterday. NO SLEEP. 1000TH LIKE. DRAGONFRUITS. MY LIFE PEAKED.
Those were some EPIC montages lol can’t wait to share this with my friend who just got a dragon fruit, maybe I’ll get a cutting out of it. 😏
Wohoo!
ohh man, absolutely amazing! Enough for a small plantation :)
Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work. Take Care
Love this channel! Just liking and commenting for the UA-cam algos!
My dragon fruit plant is so tiny! They’re incredibly sturdy. I had a piece I was propagating and my son knocked it over and I could not find it on the ground! I found it a week later and stuck it back and dirt and has new growth! I’m so impressed
Cool !
Good idea thanks
Bought your book I love it! So i propagated (or tried to) a snake plant hahaha......so now I have what appears to be a squash plant growing I'm blown away at what's going on hahaha.
Thanks for sharing❤️
Thank you!
Please remember us beginners who need a source for cuttings to work with! I found my cuttings on Craig’s list...drawer made a little cash and I got a good variety of affordable cuttings to start with
wish my yard had more sun.. nice work man .. as usual..
Thanks for the great dragon fruit videos, Kevin!
Just saw you had a book today and bought it on Amazon and I'm looking forward to reading it this week!
I noticed on an earlier video you cut the stem off about an inch up, as you said it wouldn't root well, but in the first one you planted on this video, you just planted it with the stem. Did you learn new information between the videos? What's the best way to plant it that you know of? Chop the stem up about an inch and let it heal over for 3 or so days before planting, or plant it with the little stem intact? Thanks again!
I love this video that you have it's excellent
Awesome! Mine needs to be potted up but I have been putting it off because I was afraid of hurting it. Now I’m feeling more brave. Will check out the playlist, I hope there’s a video that shows how to repot and how to know what size?
When I first moved into my spot there was a 20'+ tall dragon fruit growing over and through a fruitless olive tree, an avocado tree, and an avocado stump. Took me several weeks to clear the entire jungle. I'm probably going to experiment using tall avocado stumps as a base trellis for these, and see if I can recreate an avocado dragon fruit symbiance. 🤣
good job buds
Awesome.
I started my dragonfruit from seed about 2 years ago! It’s grown insane (and I live in Chicago and take it inside for the winter.) now I keep propagating and have so many I don’t even know what to do with them! Also wish you’d use something more sustainable than the plastic nursery tape. Thanks for the video!
Omg, this is so helpful. I was given some last year and I had no clue how to take care of them. I’m so excited now. Do you have a video on what to fertilize them with? Thanks again.
I use chicken manure and you can find it at lowe's and it helps a lot. don't know why but it makes my dragon fruit flower a lot.
Kevin, first of his name, Father of Epic Dragonfruit!
Holy Dragonfruit cuttings! 😲👍
LOL love it!
Wow, neat!!
Thank you!! We have drogon fruit trees growing up near the roof already but havent given us any fruit at all. Maybe its time to do this propagation. Thanks
I am getting ready to move as well a video idea could be how to move all your plants
When planting dragon fruit from cuttings and the cutting starts to grow those new stems/shoots/ sprouts which you have to prune can you plant those as well? And how fast do they grow? Do they grow slow like seeds or fast like the cuttings?
Your flash back! 😂😂😂😂
This is soo cool... can we get an update once these start rooting/growing?
I bought a yellow and a purple dragon fruit, and I'm so excited to them ripened right off the vine. I think they're bland in the store but I've heard they are so much tastier when you grow them. But, like, isn't everything? Haha
Nice
Hello new friend here watching from Philippines
Love your videos!!
What is the plant in the pocket vase behind you??
I’m pretty sure those pieces with a lot of roots on one side could be placed horizontally on your growth medium with the roots down and it would do awesome.
Kevin: congrats on the house. So pumped for you. When propagating, how do you know which plants need drying out before replanting versus those that can just be thrust back into the soil right after pruning? Also, is rooting hormone only appropriate for wet propagation?
General rule of thumb I use is for cacti/succulents / LARGE cuts, let callous. soft-tissue cuttings, like basil etc, immediately into water. rooting hormone works in most situations, but is never 100% necessary
sir u r voice 👌👌
Wow I just got one in a mystery box today and this video pops up lol
Epic
Thank you for the video! I have 4 cuttings and just gave my friend 1. Lots of small stems came out to the side. Should I try to tie them to the post now or wait a little longer. The growths are about 6 inches to a foot long. BTW, I saw my local Home Depot in Hayward selling this size for $14.99 each pot but they don’t look good and healthy thou.
Nice! Why didn't you do a flesh to stem cut on middle cuttings of the branches? I think it leads to less rot. As long as you don't overwater, they should root fine. Also rooting hormone works too in my experience. Good luck moving the mother plant :)
Hope KY thin stems can produce fruits
My poor neglected dragon fruit is starting to grow and I have to keep watch before they get out o control... Thank for tips Kevin.
I’m growing dragonfruit too. I planted mine in a container this spring. It’s starting to grow fast.
Welcome to the club
Epic Gardening I gave my friend a cutting too from it. I brushed against it and a piece broke off. He managed to get the broken piece to grow roots.
@@ThirdCoastGardening Maybe I could brush up against a piece too?
I feel like dragoon fruit will grow well in the el paso tx weather
of course you'd be in my hometown of San Diego...
Would love to have a cutting ;)
I have a few cuttings done has roots a
What season would you start cutting them?
after fruiting...in the summer?
Here’s a tip! Cuttings with aerial roots will convert them into ground roots, skip the whole rooting process and you can already have a semi established root system
Ok do I still have to let the cut dry first
True
I have three aerial roots at the top of a cutting. Are you saying I can plant the cutting in my cactus mix upside down?
Dragonfruit isnt actually a succulent although it looks like it.
It's actually a tropical fruit which is heat/drought tolerant, but it actually loves water.
That being said don't down your new cuttings :)
Yeah, i know this fact
It’s a succulent. In fact, it’s a cactus. But it isn’t a desert cactus. Its native habitat is tropical rain forests of Central America and South America.
From my experience if you push the cutting that deep into the soil, you will get rot. I use a rooting hormone to get them going also. I'm running out of stock to root & graft, did some pruning earlier today.
Hey, Kevin, just browsing you tube and got to your channel, I’m from South Texas and got interested now with dragon fruits. I believe it can survive with our hot weather here, what do you think? I gonna watch all your videos and learn how to propagate them. Thanks for the videos.
I have a dragon fruit an I just prune it now it's growing like crazy , but no flower bud yet.
So about a month or two back I congratulated you on your super fast channel growth from I think 390k to 450k subscribers, now you're at 721k, that's crazy and you must be so proud that it's not only the plants you manage to grow! Lol.
It's totally insane!
@@epicgardening it really is! Imagine that: you nearly have the same amount of subscribers as people living in San Francisco, each with their own life yet watching you. It's such a hard number to actually comprehend. Crazy. Congratulations! And with the new garden there are many more on their way! By the way, I noticed your videos were "only" 1080p, have you thought about going for 1440p or even 4k? Even if the recording itself is only 1080p the higher bitrate that 1440p/4k get really help with all the foliage details.
The spurs turn up naturally or u can cut slant up to find the top from bottom, nice video my friend
Dying over this music! Hahah love it
LOL i couldn't stop laughing
Epic Gardening Great creative choice, loved it!
great video! it would be cool to grow my own ! but i dont think it would do vary good in Wisconsin!
What do it taste like now I never had exotic fruit now love to grow some now love it💜💯🙄thanks now
Like a mild kiwi! Very fresh
Hi very good I like ❤️
Thank you for such informative video tell me kindly for watering if I give daily much water or less or I give it once in a week ?
Depends on climate. When dirt is dry you can water. Typically once a week.
Question on another topic: What can you tell us about mycorrhizal fungi spores as an inoculant?
Have you done any videos about solar food digesters?
I need your help/ Advice please!!!: I really want to grow blueberries in an inside/outside kind of situation in a container. I want to leave the pot outside in the sun for the hot sunny summer days but then bring it inside either in my garage or basement in the winter (I live in Ontario, Canada). I have a feeling it'll work out if I take good care of the miniature bush. BUT there are 2 twists. #1 the super tiny bush with only around 5 stems and the size of a medium sized tomato plant, 1 year old, is planted in my garden (ground) but it can't stay there anymore and I don't want to let go of it. #2 I'm not quite sure the type of blueberry plant but I think it's a Top Hat (only because of research so I could be wrong), what I do know is that it's self-pollinating I think you call it. (It can grow blueberries wihout another blueberry plant just not as many)
~I also left this comment on your blueberry video but it was older so I thoght maybe I have better chances on this vid~ thx
As a tip, I've had great success rooting them with the soil being maybe a third full in pots like that. Saved me 3x the soil, allowed me to put them in sun sooner, and because bottom of plant was in more shade I had more success getting them to push out new growth closer to the tops and more vertical reaching for light. Only down side is less insulation if in colder climates or places with more wind chill.
Just learning about dragonfruit growing and I'm wondering how the stems actually grow. I'd have thought taping it might stop it from growing, but obviously it doesn't. I guess I thought it would 'stretch', but I guess not. And also, the cuttings that have the top completely chopped off, did I catch it correctly that nothing grows from this section, but rather the 'nooks' below that part? So this would mean the initial stem would never get any longer, right? PS Keep up the amazing education, exceptional (thank you) :)
Hi Kevin, I recently discovered your channel and I love your videos. I've already watched a number of them, and have also subscribed to your channel. :) Quick question: when rooting cuttings of dragon fruit, would it be helpful to use some rooting hormone? I noticed that you did not use any in this video, which tells me that it's not necessary to use rooting hormone. However, if I happen to have some around, would it increase my chances of the cuttings becoming viable plants if I used the hormone? Or would you recommend against it? Thanks!
Not really. Just make sure it is nice and warm... if cold weather use heatmap
Is there a follow up video on these cuttings?
Hey Kevin I'm your neighbor down the rd and I just discovered your channel not to long ago when you where building your trellises. I have the common red variety dragon the sugar dragon fruit and yellow palora so im looking for the Israeli yellow variety. Please lmk if you have a cutting you can part with or maybe you can point me where I can get one.
How do those fabric planters in the background hold up in the sun? Have you had any long term?
Will the wall growing dragon fruit can bear fruits like hanging one?
Your music choice has me cackling!
