Really appreciate the update being in the actual video and not a separate short or something. I've noticed it in a couple recent videos and it makes it so much better for the viewer. So many creators chase the numbers and force us to try to hunt down the update... it's just annoying.
yo video production is hard when you don't have a team so the attitude is annoying to read.. i doubt people are trying to chase the numbers and make you hunt. it might just make more sense for their upload schedule and work load to show an update later or in a short. if you didnt know kevin has a team that helps him manage content and uploads consistently so he can stay uploading good content and do longer projects like this..
I see your point. It's definitely not all in the name of chasing numbers. But there's little question that viewers generally prefer to have it all in one video. Id also be fine with links to the updates at the end or in the description... But most don't bother. The creators who put in the effort deserve the kudos. Note from “up north”. Here in a colder climate (W Oregon), we typically plant figs for the breba crop. Desert King is one variety that primarily produces breba crop, and in that case figs are produced on 2nd year wood.
The last few years I have been trying to bring a really tall, big fig tree down low enough so I can harvest the figs, otherwise the birds get to them before they are even ripe. This coming winter there are still a few wayward branches I need to trim. Your tips give me confidence that I am on the right track. The tree is filled with new branches carrying lots of figs. I also tried growing new trees from cuttings. Most failed but I did get about 3 cuttings to take hold. They will be planted when ready into 5 gallon or more pots so I can move them around and even cover them. My tree always tries to give me a second season of figs but our winter comes in and the leaves all die off and the figs never ripen. With the smaller pots I can either move them under cover or bring them inside. I live in the low AZ desert zone 9b and the tree is a Brown Mission Fig. Love your channel! Thank you
This is super helpful, i was an idiot and planted my fig tree right at the edge of my garden space, so it's been hell trying to keep it managed. Very good to know that you can prine them so aggressively!
Kevin I would love to see a video on cloning your citrus trees! I grow citrus (as a beginner) a little north of you in Orange County and your fig propagation segment here was fantastic
Fabulous video. We are winter here in̈ Victoria, Australia and I have some fig trees in pots not doing great and I didn't know how to prune them. Such a good video, including updates. Thank you so much Kevin. 🦘🌿
100% true most figs do 2 harvests first from pre winter old branches and second from new. Figs are beautiful trees personally hate such pruning to a ugly bush
LOL, I was trying to kill the fig I had in my yard - it was HUGE, in a bad spot and I didn't think I could dig it out - so I cut it back HARD. Almost to the ground. It has come back with a fury this year, lolol. I'm really surprised it survived due to the 17 degree weather we had this last winter (GA zone 8A). Ah well, guess I'll harvest the bounty this year and then hire someone with a backhoe and dig it out at the end of the year.
Well, this is all new to me. I've only ever given fig trees a haircut to keep them at a manageable height. I've only been growing fig for a couple of years, so not very knowledgeable about them. I grew the current trees with cuttings from our old house. Great informative video. Cheers!
As a younger gardener and UA-camr, your videos are so inspiring. Everything from the in depth info, to the quality videos you produce, it gives me inspiration and knowledge to teach my friends and family about the joys of gardening. You are a big reason I wanted to try my hand at making videos for people. Thank you!
I have been having a great time caring for my Fig Trees. It's a shame I have no taste for the Fig... but they are so easy to care for. But...my partner LOVES Figs and likes this arrangement...she gets ALL the figs... smiles. So...my next adventure is trying to grow them in the ground here in Wisconsin. Lori says her grandfather, from Grand Rapids, MI, had wonderful trees in-ground. It looks like your tree is doing well...but you have that (sometimes) enviable California weather, eh?
I have a Chicago Hardy Fig tree and I’m in KC. Mine was planted 3 years ago and I’ve never seen mine get that big or get any figs. Maybe you can do a thing on Fig Varieties and talk about more northern climates they grow well in?
I’ve left mine alone for about 5 years and still hasn’t produced a single fig. Might try pruning this winter and see if that helps it produce next year
thank you for making this video! i really needed that. i have tried to propogate figs many many times and failed every time. i don't know what i'm doing wrong.
Very good video, but I feel the need to point out that in cooler climates, like mine near Portland, Oregon, breba crop figs are pretty much the only game in town. I will never get ripe main crop figs, so I have selected varieties that produce a good breba crop. That means that my pruning plan has to be a bit more complex since what I want is year-old wood - but not too much of it or the tree just keeps getting bigger. Your technique will work well for main crop figs in your climate, but isn't going to be universal.
My fig tree is 30 x 30. It’s huge! When we moved into the house 7 years ago it had been cut all the way down to the ground and we had no idea what it was or if it was alive. Now I kniow why the previous owners cut the tree way back. It will kill me to cut it very much although after watching this I know it’s necessary.
What would the disadvantage be of putting that long branch in soil to clone? Or you cut up to just have more? Do you use rooting hormone? I've had mixed results cloning from cuttings, air layering worked but slow.
Instead do this: Take the whole branch off while it is growing and not dormant. Take all the leaves off except for 2 at the top. Cut 2/3 off of each leaf and put the branch in a 5 gallon bucket filled with water and within 2 weeks you will see bumps along the branch in the water. Those bumps will form roots. As soon as you see any root, take the branch out of the water and put it in a 5 gallon container or in the ground filled with potting mix. You will have a new fig tree within 3 months.
Hi , I enjoyed your video. I live in NY. I have couple of fig trees. They have figs but the figs form late in June and don’t ripe well by September. Help me please. What fertilizer should I use to make them ripe on time. Today is July 19 2024. I use cow manure and miracle grow. Please help me. I love figs
I live in NY. If they are in the ground then there is nothing you can do to ripen them earlier. If they are in containers, bring them in your garage or basement, put grow lights above them and put a heater with a timer and a set temperature and they will ripen.
Pardon me sir but why do you allow this fig tree to be out of shape. Instead of having a bushy shape it takes that orizontal structure which is not praktical ?
Growing foods we can eat has been something enjoyable; use to want to have some land and home to grow fruits and vegetables; most houses and land nowadays are NOT within reach of my financial needs, financial security, and financial independence; or so many “in authority over us” ; keep declaring to me! 😢 Growing supper ever bearing plants for future consumption in the year ahead ; that would be awesome ! I’ve prayed, talked and fought against these lies for years ONLY to get worse off than the last year ! Or to have to move somewhere different and have to give away my plants, be forced into letting them die, or throw them away:: because the moving company refuses to move them. Thus having AFTER each move to start over again, again, again . . . . . 😢😅 The disobedience of the garden of Eden is the reason why! Strange though how for 55+ years there are plenty of dead energy fruits, vegetables and plants in grocers, though ! ?So therefore somebody’s already allowed to plant, sow, grow; ?what’s the big problem with allowing my family + me to plant, sow, and grow fruits and vegetables, and some farming animals too !??!! Feels like something worse than communism !
So all that time I spent Cursing my Fig Tree, or down on one knee with "Figs Lives Shatterred" banners, actually had nothing to do with it all? Or anything as usual? Well at least I can biblically still abuse the lack of my 12 obvious labours!

Really? I have a baby fig tree that’s about two years old and it’s also 8 feet tall and I was wondering how much to prune… I had no idea that we are supposed to wait until winter and until the Leaves fall off to begin the pruning process. . thanks for the tip
This is one of the best gardening videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. It's educational, to the point, shows what is being taught, and has the monthly updates so we can see the final product and to top it off we get the bonus content of learning how to grow new fig trees. Well done.
This is a great video, I cannot even imagine growing my own fig tree. My grandmother had one in South Carolina when I was little and we would visit her every year and she would show me her tree and always had fresh sweet figs lol thanks for the memories!
The next thing you need to talk about is drainage. Figs do not like soil that stays wet. If your soil needs remediation, pumice helps. A lot of pumice helps a lot! 😉
Try a Dwarf Everbearing Mulberry or two too. If you plant them around the outside of your fig orchard it helps distract the birds. You can force the mulberry trees to produce fruit as the figs ripen if you do a complete pruning at the right time...meaning...remove all the individual leaves and when they grow back the tree will begin fruiting. My Brown Turkey Fig trees are growing like crazy here in Louisiana and are already making fruits in their 1st and 2nd years. I planted 4 Celeste trees too this year. They`ll make figs next year. Mulch very heavily with layers of chopped leaves, grass clippings and brown cardboard around your fig trees and water and fertilize well in the first two years. Get coverings to protect the young trees from very hard freezes, early freezes, and late spring freezes. Trust me!
If you are in Central Texas, figs grow like a weed. North Texas they do ok too. East/South Texas is rough for figs. West Texas is fine too, just make sure you water them heavily, especially the first year.
Figs growing on new growth only simply isn't true. Love your videos but introing with that isn't accurate. The majority of figs produce both a breba and a main crop. Brebas grow in the previous year's growth, main grow in new growth with brebas being produced first. Some trees only do one or the other. Desert King only grows brebas. If you were to prune all the old wood from last year off, you'd never get any fruit. If you grow figs in warmer climates, brebas can be just as good or sometimes better than the main crop. So keep that mind folks.
Thanks for sharing your experience on plants, pruning, and trees and growing plants ! Some of your posts have helped me tremendously; especially since some books on plants are NOT a live plant instructional guide ! They are a good resource ; just NOT live plant, instructional videos on plants and how to’s ! Thanks again!
What does it mean if figs grow on “old” branches. I have a very old huge Fig that I inherited on a property that is in poor health but has produced many green figs that are rotting and falling on the ground. How can I help grandma fig? 😊
The main part of the branch will be a darker brown while the new growth (same branch) which will be a green or very light brown. Even the old branches put on new growth each year, usually from the tip
It may be time to take cuttings from that tree and propagate them. Next winter when all the leaves are off, cut everything off above 3 feet. Put all of those branches into soil and root them. That old tree will live again through the cuttings. Then fertilize and mulch the old tree and it will come back in the spring.
I'll have to come back to this in the fall. I'm so proud of my little figs right now. My Olympia has fruited, LSU purple, Desert King, and Chicago Cold Hardy are starting to push out fruit, and Violette Bordeaux is a slow grower. I dream of the fresh fig. Thanks for the video, Happy Growing!
Get a fine mesh covering for your trees or the birds will eat them. And raccoons and squirrels love figs too. Just be aware. I use driveway alarms and wrap my trees in row covering garden mesh when they`re loaded with ripening fruits.
Heres a question that i've got. Even though you make a clone from that there figtree. The age of the clone is the same as the mothertree. Wouldn't that mean that eventually even cuttings will die off due to age or is my thinking wrong?
Many thanks for posting this. I have a 5-year-old fig and could not find a video that fully explained how to prune it. My garden has a low canopy, and the fig is too tall. I am really looking forward to next season now I know cutting it down will not harm it.
This was so helpful. I purchased a couple of fig trees from our local extension service during their yearly fundraiser. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. You have been a blessing to me and my family on our gardening journey.
Winter in San Diego ... look out, you might have to wear a light sweater. Nice video. I'm trying to tame a big fig we inherited when we bought a house near San Bernardino, CA area.
Wonder why my figs are so unhappy? They work in our area, and I’ve had them for at least 3 years they die to the ground each year. My family has a huge one! And one of the varieties was found growing wild on orcas island- near me. I’m zone 8.
What a great video. Really appreciate the time and effort you have put into this Kevin. Its a go to for all aspects of fig pruning and it really helps to see the results which are often not shown. Ill defi ately be sharing this with others interested. Thank you and may i say what a lovely plant you ended up with. Enjoy the fruit 😊
I've been growing Yellow Long Neck for two years now. I bought a very small rooted seedling online, grew it for a while then took cuttings and rooted those. The fruit is huge and tastes like honeydew melon. But it is a leggy grower with long vertical shoots. Highly recommended. Btw, nice loquat tree. The fruit is so delicious and underappreciated. Shout out from NorCal.
I really liked your video and the pruning method. I'm in Florida and the soil is horrible. We have a fig tree that my husband planted. After 16 years later it finally shoot up and started fruiting figs. My husband refuses to prune the tree and complaining that not enough figs to harvest. Can you suggest any ideas, I want to prune it. There are a lot of figs on the tree right now but they stay very small and don't ripe. TIA
I just stumbled upon this video. I DO follow Epic Gardening but apparently missed this one. I propagate fig trees and have many. It's early September and the leaves will soon be gone on my fig trees. This video info says 2 months ago. I'm wondering when Kevin is actually pruning those trees. I like what he's doing, but want to be certain that I'm not to early here in Florida panhandle. I actually live in Inlet Beach..... right across from Lake Powel and Panama City Beach. Tks for your help.
Thank you for this video. We are in Ventura Co (3 hrs North of you). Sadly our 6 yr old Mission fig fell over in the Fall winds last Oct. Our tree guy said it was broken at the root ball and would not survive so we had it cut at ground level and removed. We left the stump/root for a later removal - which did not happen. Almost a year later we now have what appears to be a 4' fig bush growing off the stump. Wondering how to prune this come winter. We are hopeful it will be fruitful. Any suggestions would be appreciated. C.
So assuming I have fig trees pruned as per the video, and assuming they are planted in rows, how far do people recommend between plants and rows, I have a few small trees to plant and around 10 cuttings rooted, and likely will get cuttings of more varieties.
Oh thank you.. I've got a couple pre existing fig trees on my property and they make my heart happy . One was planted under trees tho and is so tall... it finally fruited this year after a couple of tlc but I had NO IDEA HOW TO PRUNE... #CityGirlInTheWoods 😂😂😂 thanks
Thank you This was an excellent excellent video! I think you told us everything a person could possibly want to know especially as a new fig owner sitting here thinking well what am I going to do with it about pruning, since in my world it's getting to be fall and its lost all his leaves so again thank you very much for a really excellent video - covered all the bases. 🎉😊🎉
I planted mine a little close. Didn't realize the massive size of the plants when I planted. However I haven't pruned them ever. I will cut them back to about half when they go dormant.
Thanks Kevin for the informative video on figs. I have 2 ( in 25 gallon tubs). It’s my second year. But I was wondering if you fertilize your fig tree and how often. I’m from New England. I hope to have figs this year. Both are wonderfully shaped and have baby figs forming. I would like to know how to support them with fertilizer as they are in pots.
Any advice on renovating a giant (25 ft tall and 15 ft wide) fig? The branches are all crazy and twisted but the tree is quite productive. Don’t want to kill it but it is humongous and needs major renovation.
Really appreciate the update being in the actual video and not a separate short or something. I've noticed it in a couple recent videos and it makes it so much better for the viewer. So many creators chase the numbers and force us to try to hunt down the update... it's just annoying.

Yup. Great to include a follow-up. Thanks!
Note from “up north”. Here in a colder climate (W Oregon), we typically plant figs for the breba crop. Desert King is one variety that primarily produces breba crop, and in that case figs are produced on 2nd year wood.
Will this variety grow well on East Coast, NYS?
@patrickkerner1471 Yes in a nice sized container. Always bump up to a larger size and store in a cold basement or garage.

We just planted two fig trees last night, so this video had perfect timing!
Kevin,
No wonder I wasn't getting any figs--it was all old wood! My fig definitely needs pruning & next year...figs!!! 😃
Love the before & after in the same video.
I legit bought a fig yesterday so... This is gonna be good, thanks
This is super helpful, i was an idiot and planted my fig tree right at the edge of my garden space, so it's been hell trying to keep it managed. Very good to know that you can prine them so aggressively!
Excellent opportunity for some air layering @4:40
Kevin I would love to see a video on cloning your citrus trees! I grow citrus (as a beginner) a little north of you in Orange County and your fig propagation segment here was fantastic

@@chrisrond1022 Thank you so much! Really appreciate it 🙂
Great video. I will need to prune my 2 year old figs in pots this coming winter so nice to have some tips.
What an excellent video! Thanks, just what I was looking for all in one video. Keep doing it just like that!

I don’t even have a fig tree. But I watch all yalls videos at this point 😂
I just got 4 fig trees 3 weeks ago all different varieties and was binge watching his old fig videos so this one was posted at the best time
Same 😅
Nice I've been keeping an eye out for this one.

I am very jealous. I am a new gardener. I have a fig, a persimmon , a guava trees. 3rd year no movements.
Did ours last fall, 7 figs are over 20ft tall an 1,000s of figs. Enjoy❤
Thanks for the tip!
Brilliant! Big Thanks! All very inspiring! :0)

I can’t wait to add a fig tree to my garden!
Sehr gut Wideo.❤
Nice job on the pruning.
I want one of them fig cuttings pretty please!!
I would love to grow a fig I’ve never tried one before
Thank you! I learned so much from this video. I do have a question: Any idea why half of my fig tree is dying?
Almost a 'step over' fig. Works well with apples, why shouldn't it work with figs. Great video
Great video--thank you so much!! My daughter just gave me 2 small fig trees. The cuttings you just stuck in the dirt--how often should you water them?

I was gifted a fig tree propagation this year! No idea what kind.
@00:20 had this fig for a little over a year now @03:35 I've had a couple of year of good figs off of this....Which is it?
Does you advise apply the same to a northern climate?
What is the tree besides the fig, with the red fruits?
This is nice 👍
Why my figs are falling off before ripening?please suggest. Thanks
When you do the cuttings in winter can you take the whole branch you cut off & root it to have a more mature size tree?

My new fig tree is just an 8’ trunk with a few leaves popping out. How do I prune that?
My fig tree produces small fig that won’t mature ?
how do we enter to win a fig i really want one of the clones
Your fig tree growing that way may not be too pretty as a tree but practical for better control and picking.

“Yo! I’m dying” 😂 imagining the fig tree saying that was such a LOL moment for me 😁

So keep that mind folks.
Great video! Love how you show the progress from initial pruning.
I was looking at that grow bag thinking: Oh, looks like the one I have! I ordered them from your shop! LOL. Of course it looks like the one I have :)
I have a dwarf figomental and that's happening to my tree right now but it's in a container
Very useful. Thank you from Hungary❤
For an additional resource, I HIGHLY recommend the book "Grow a Little Fruit Tree" for pruning knowledge
Great video thank you
Thank you. This has made so much sense to me. A great explanation of where when and why to prune which up to now has been a bit of a mystery. 👍
when did you record this?
For the winter time how do I protect my lemon tree from storms that's located outside of my house.
This was so helpful. I purchased a couple of fig trees from our local extension service during their yearly fundraiser. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. You have been a blessing to me and my family on our gardening journey.
That’s… a lot of pruning at one time, like half the tree. It’ll probably be fine, but that’s pretty aggressive. It’s a risk.
Ya he said he was being aggressive.
Great video, what was the potting soil mix?
Winter in San Diego ... look out, you might have to wear a light sweater. Nice video. I'm trying to tame a big fig we inherited when we bought a house near San Bernardino, CA area.
Thank you for this video. Now I am fascinated about figs!
I've got a couple pre existing fig trees on my property and they make my heart happy
. One was planted under trees tho and is so tall... it finally fruited this year after a couple of tlc but I had NO IDEA HOW TO PRUNE... #CityGirlInTheWoods 😂😂😂 thanks
This is a great video, very informative and you covered everything one needs to know. I'm off to prune my fig tree.
