Feb 1 - March 5 That's sun low in the sky time = warm light spectrum. Also happens in autumn. Why they fruit at those times. Also how you get long day and short day crops. I get that's kinda advanced for the average hobby gardener though.
One thing i've always wondered about, can you graft dragon fruit cactus to other cactus especies? cause there are other cactus especies that grow vertical trunks way easier, so they could be coupled to make a dragon fruit tree without support, like a sawaro as the "trunk" or others.
I’ve been following Richard’s channel for years. He has a wealth of dragon fruit knowledge. Also his FB has a ton of other expert growers who are happy to help newbies.
My wife was mentioning that she wanted to try growing dragon fruit this morning - Perfect timing!! Also, we converted our front yard into a big edible garden after finding your channel over the pandemic. Thanks so much for all the info and inspiration!!
I'm really glad you threw everything into one video! I've got an unknown variety of dragonfruit that a neighbor had set out on the curb with a "Free" sign on it. I nursed it back to health and now it's gone crazy with side shoots (although it's starting to grow out thru the top of the trellis). Guess I know what I'll be pruning tomorrow! Thanks
My wife's friend passed on a puny little dragonfruit start for me several years ago. That thing did nothing until I transplanted it into a bigger pot with fresh soil and really took off. I moved it inside to protect it during the cooler months, watching it develop. Then one of the cats ate it. I tried finding a new plant, but nobody in the area sold one, not even the "exotic" plant guy. I have some dried seeds, so I'll try again that way.
I have heard that the stems of those grafted cacti (green stem with brightly colored top) are actually dragonfruit. They UA-camr I watched bought some at the dollar store, pulled the top graft off, and grew the stem into a blooming dragonfruit.
You guys did me in! Here in NC and I decided 'why not try dragonfruit'? So I took one from the grocery store, washed off the pulp the best I could and put it in a couple of small, flat trays. I now have several hundred 'babies'. The sad part, I'm excited about it! Some of them are starting to push out a stem between the 2 baby leaves.
A friend gave me a cutting from my recent trip to san diego. It was in a ziploc bag, it fell out of the box I had it in the trunk. Totally forgot about it and it made the trip back to central texas and it actually grew roots. I put It in a container and it has grown at least two inches!! This little dragonflies wants to live! I'm completely intimidated by this little dragon. Thank you for this video!😮❤
My dragonfruit journey began during the pandemic. We bought a colombiana fruit from a local farmer and was absolutely blown away by how sweet it was. I saved some seeds and germinated some in some water. Ended up with about 100 seedlings😂🤦🏽♂️ I grew stuff but not to the level that I am now. From veggies, to dragonfruit, to fruit trees, to kratky hydroponics, etc. Any old food safe container has a plant in it😂 My wife thinks I’m nuts. But she doesn’t complain when she take a scoop of a juicy sweet dragonfruit right from the yard. Or veggies. The taste difference is just ridiculous. Not even close. Nowadays, I am just addicted to gardening. My friends and family miss me😂

What an inspiring journey you’ve had with dragonfruit and gardening! It’s amazing how a simple purchase can spark such a passion. Growing your own fruits and veggies definitely makes a huge difference in taste. Do you have any tips for beginners who want to start their own gardening journey? @@fromfieldtofork Aloha🤙🏼🙏🏼 Don’t really have any tips except to have patience. Gardening helps with patience. Plus, it keeps me busy enough to stay out of trouble I guess😬🤣 At first my family used to think I was crazy. I actually thought and still think that they are crazy for thinking I’m crazy😂. How can “growing food” be a crazy thing. Insane to me. But that’s the materialistic world we live in right?? Most of society are so caught up in grocery stores, fast food, etc. that growing food seems weird and not cool I guess. To me, it’s an absolute necessity to have an ability to grow or even raise your food and try to be sustainable. Now that we have been eating fresh veggies for years, they have become more welcoming of the environment around them because of how delicious home grown vegetables are. HUGE difference!!! Goodluck to you and may all your family and friends benefit from your successes. Much aloha 🙏🏼🤙🏼
One thing that has worked for me when rooting dragonfruit cutting is I’ll take a cutting and then just put it off to the side where it can be cool, dry and away from the sun. Eventually it’ll sprout some root initials and I’ll plant it

Great timing I have two dragon fruit plants growing right now and this is very helpful. It’s colder where I live so I started the cuttings inside. It’s an experiment for me. I am growing them in a pot and growing it up a trellis. I didn’t grow it on a free standing trellis like yours because I am hoping the warmth of the wall will help it a little
One of your first videos I watched was about dragon fruit back at your previous house. You sold me on loquats as a hedge, keep talking and I will end up with dragon fruit on our Destin Florida garden zone 9b! 🎉😍
Thans for this, really helpful. We have several of them growing but haven't known how to care for them really. No idea what variety they are except one produced fruit a few years ago that was hot pink inside and tasted great. Going to clean them up and pot correctly this week!
Great guide. Thought I would comment on tipping plants.Apical dominance is the term. The growing shoot inhibits the growth of laterals. The further from the tip, the more likely laterals are to sprout. Think of a pine tree. It has very high apical dominance. As the growing tip moves upwards, it allows the lateral branches to extend producing a very uniform pyramid shape. Removal of the tip will remove the apical dominance allowing laterals to sprout. :)
I'm blind and can't afford buying dragonfruit, so I'm dying to grow them myself here in Central Florida. I've never had a fresh one. Got one, but still need a big pot to build the trellis and plant it in. I want to get some cuttings of Richard's favorites.
