Dragon fruit may not taste as sweet as many people may say, but what I love about it is the texture when you put it in your mouth. Another thing is that it makes me go freely.
I suggest you find a grower (not always easy in some parts of the world of course) and get him/her to pick you a _fully ripe one_. Then you'll understand the positive comments about their taste and sweetness 🙂

I tried dragon fruit a couple months ago I bought 2 from my local grocery store and they where hard so I put them in a paper bag and checked them everyday and after a week they where a bit soft and I cut it it was sooo sweet I couldn't believe how good it was! I kept hearing people say they don't tast like anything its probably that they weren't ripe yet. Have patience with it. To me it tastes like a kiwi and a pear combo....amazing!! Dragons eggs!!!
I like it when you said even if it doesn’t taste good, it tastes better if you’re growing it yourself. That is so true. What people don’t realize is when we combine bitters, sours, and other flavors together with cooking or blending they enhance a propagation of flavors. Basically an amalgam of yummy.
Not all are bland there are some really good ones. When you get used to the flavors, you will always want to eat your fruit even though you feel it's bland. I got motivated because my mom told me that in western mexico, they would go to the mountains and there would be so so many varieties and that they are so so good and that our ancestors depended on them. She says the purple ones were very very uniquely delicious!!!
Thanks for doing this kinda video for us. This was fascinating! I already love your channel, but also really love when you venture out and show us other people's stuff. I really love these neat dragonfruit varieties! Tytytyty!
I really would have appreciated more information on how to actually grow them, to be honest. Soil mixture, average day /night temps, fert schedule if any. I noticed that they seem to grow from one or two stems in a pot, then turn into a cluster on the trellis. Are they trained into that like grapes, do they just climb until they can't anymore? Lots of actual plant care that didn't get addressed in this video at all, and if anyone should've been able to answer those really important questions, it was this guy. .
@@bellamorda9582 I mean if I was 12 years old I wouldve known to go to his channel or epic gardenings channel for more videos. He or she is not exactly a "smart person" and came off like "waaaah waaaah. why didnt you feed me all the information I wanted conveniently in one video! waaaah"
The first time I had a dragonfruit I was SO disappointed. Then I had one that was ripe, and now it's my favorite fruit! For those that can only get them at the store, make sure you let it ripen to the point that the skin starts to look a little wrinkly and all the "scales" are wilted.
I had to wait for someone at the grocery store today and I knew it would be a long long wait so I sat at Starbucks. I haven't been there in years but decided to get a drink and it was their mango dragonfruit lemonade. So good! But I can't afford Starbucks every day, nor do I want to. I found a copycat recipe but finding dragonfruit isn't easy and the powder can be expensive. And I'd bet that it's not as good. So glad I found this video. I live in Arizona, in the desert and I'm sure I can grow a cactus. So I'm going to order a dragonfruit plant and grow my own. I'm really excited about that. Just a bit more research on the one best suited to our climate. We're a bit harsher than southern California. Thank you so much for this.

You guys rock. Thanks for all the great videos you had created. I learned a lot about dragon fruits, how to plant, grow, maintain, graft, prune, everything
I'm only half way through the vid, and I'm planning my trip to the local Galeria to get some seed... I could seriously just sit in Dragon Alley for hours and stare at those plants! Well Done Richard !!!
I live in Arkansas. I started some Dragon fruit two years ago from seed that I got from the grocery store. I watched this video and was quite impressed about the size of your plants. Mine are only about 2 feet tall, I hope I have them in big enough pots (3 gallon sized) and in the right kind of soil (sandy loam). I have to move them into the greenhouse when temperatures get too low, so a bigger pot is more difficult to move. I have them on moss poles but it looks like I'll need to upgrade to stronger wooden forms like yours (only a tad smaller). I'm interested in what kind, how much, and when on fertilizer. Thanks for this video, it has taught me so much
Actually found a Ecuador Palora fruit in one of my local grocery stores. We saved some of the seeds and planted them. They are a couple inches tall at this point. Guess it would be best to find some root stock to transplant it on to.

I love both of your channels, keep those video's coming Kevin and Richard! I'm so, so jealous of that Californian weather... I live in the Netherlands, I have some seedlings and just bought a bigger plant which I have cut up into 20 or so cuttings. They all rooted fine. This winter I wont have a problem taking those inside but when they start to grow on trellis I will need a much bigger house/greenhouse lol. I'm afraid I will have to give away most. Anyway it's a nice hobby.
Looking thru the comments like, "who else wants to buy clippings?" 😆 🤣 😂 dead serious tho where can I buy some? Like the one behind you eating in the pots? You ever had a garden stalker?. Appreciate you guys. 😆 🤣 😂
I just discovered your channel and I’m loving it! This video was so amazing! I just started growing a cutting that was given to me. I had no idea there were so many varieties! Thank you for all the information. Kevin is amazing!
Okay, no one asked the 'special' properties of the South American variety, so I will. What is that 'special' quality? Also, I watch both your channels. Back in June a friend of mine in Florida gave me 2 red dragon fruit plants. I still have to make a trellis, but am supporting the branches as best I can until I can must up the courage to go to Lowe's (I'm high risk, so I don't go out). I'm in New Orleans, so they get all types of weather. I plan to move them inside when applicable. There's a big grower across the lake in Covington, LA that also has a UA-cam channel.
I'm In Australia, I started with Dragon fruit when I found an unusual fruit I had not come across before in the major supermarket (coles) in Australia (Sydney) last year, its great for smoothies, I make my wife one every day, the dragon fruit cost $5 each from coles, but they last for a whole week in the fridge they weigh 0.9 to 1.1 kg each, so just $1 a day, I like to eat it directly also with a spoon the flesh is bright white with black seeds, have not seen any at the supermarket with reddish purplish flesh, I always plant any fruit seeds I don't eat, and have been gifted quite a few aloe Vera plants which are sharing pots with other fruit trees / bushes, I have an apartment 3rd floor and have many fruit trees and bushes such as paw paw, mango, blueberries, pears, apples, custard apple, plum, lychees, passion fruit, strawberries, avocado, blood orange etc growing on my balcony, have a few sprouting dragon fruit now, as I only have 15 pots, there are multiple different plants in each pot, I use composted gum leaves which land on my balcony for the soil, I get a LOT of gum leaves and gum nuts on the balcony, they compost very well after 6 months if you keep them damp, and smell really good, about 10% of the seeds I plant (I always just plant them directly in the soil, no chilling or anything) come up, different species come up better than others, the cherries are the hardest to get to grow when you just plant them without any other action, but those that survives seem to be 'very hardy', looking forward to eating some of my own grown dragon fruit, thanks for the information that there are may different dragon fruit, and there are many different dragon fruit and tastes :-)

@Merrilee Crank success! I have a container full, more always popping up while some have a little cactus on top of them. Trying to decide when to start separating them.
Not a gardener. Have grown strawberries with the kids but that's it. Richard and epic gardening convinced me to buy a cutting and it instantly became an addiction
These look spectacular! Perfect time to just eat a few with some nice cold water. Ugh. So jealous. Well know that I know how they are harvested young, I feel so cheated for the first and only time I ate dragon fruit.
I was surprised to hear you grow dragon fruit from seed. Do they grow true to the parent? And would you mind suggesting a few nurseries that can be relied upon for good stems to propagate from.
If only I lived in a hardiness zone suitable 😭(needs zones 9-11, 9 needs frost protection). I'm zone 8. Fresh dragonfruit is so much better than imported. I remember eating a fresh one in Vietnam and being surprised by how delicious it was compared to ones I had eaten back home (Canada).

So glad I found you because my Chinese neighbor gave us Dragonfruit cuttings and now we are growing them here in Southern California. I don’t know which variety they are but my daughter and I are excited!
I’m guessing the “special property” is that they help with constipation lol. They are very high in fiber.
;)
Vanessa Alexandra Yes they and they remind me of like the effects of a chia seed. They get things moving but it’s a good thing. I never had an unpleasant experience but it’s an all natural way to go! 💩
Does it change the color though? I think we can all agree that that's the main question here.
Same reason why papaya is supposed to make you go right?
And, my dirty mind was thinking aphrodisiac.
I tasted dragon fruit for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I got two from the supermarket, kept them for 2 and 4 days before eating. Had it cold scooping out the flesh with a spoon. They were red and sweet. I enjoyed the experience. I hope the seed i plant will geow into dragon fruit cactus within 4 years. I also hope to come by them again soon. Thanks for the video
To this day the best thing I've ever tasted was a Dragon fruit smoothie my uncle made me when I was 16
So delish
This video was absolutely torture and I DO NOT appreciate that! I literally drooling, especially with these really detailed descriptions of the favour! Love you so much for the information you shared... I guess I'll be back for more tasteful torture. 😅❤🙏🏽👌🏾
I've been watching Richard's vids too! I recently got cuttings 3 months ago and they've started a foot of new growth.
I laughed when he said Plant lovers can't stop collecting their favorite plant. I have like 6 variets of cucumber now LOL. Cucumber melons are my favorite.
i am happy to see young gardeners
You have peaked my curiosity..what "special" properties does the Ecuador Palora have?
Laxative effect
@@jasmatkgood one
makes ur piss taste like skittles
Got me so jealous eating all that beautiful fresh dragonfruit! Wondering if I can really justify heating a greenhouse enough to make it happen in zone 7 lol
I like Richard as much as the next but idk about the God of d.f. lol... George Emerich... Paul Thomson... Edgar Valdivia... Gray Martin... and others have 20 + years of experience and expertise. Richard is an awesome d.f. grower and nice AND generous with his experience... doing a big part in bringing d.f. to a more mainstream position in society .. and that hopefully will bring price down as well and help d.f. become more accessible to all 🙌🙌
Your last sentence is our goal :)
Dragon fruit has been a Super Food for me!! I had Really bad Gerd and Intestinal Inflammation for Years and when I started eating one Good Size Dragon fruit Every day for 3 months it really Healed my GI Problems! Couldn't believe it but its So Medicinal!!
So awesome when you meet a master! It shows you that you can be a specialist gardener. Loved the video, learned so much about dragonfruit. Keep up the great work guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pretty cool! The Dragon Fruit Master and my favorite San Diego Gardener! I’m growing Dragon Fruit because of you two and Paul.
Just started growing from cuttings. Thank you guys for your passion and insight.
Where could I find some cuttings? I'd love to get some ready for next year🙏
For such a small room, he's growing so many of them!
I've never had a vine ripened dragonfruit, Richard has inspired me to grow a few of them and test my luck!
I saw so many fields of dragon fruit when traveling by train in Vietnam. Impressive.
Lots of actual plant care that didn't get addressed in this video at all, and if anyone should've been able to answer those really important questions, it was this guy. .
Go to Richard's channel, Grafting Dragon Fruit. Very informative and thorough.
I have a 5 part series, and Richard has a whole channel about exactly that :)
This is intro.. You need go to his channel and subscribe there. Stop whining.
@@kateli1880 He wasn't whining. He asked some good questions. Just suggesting he go to the channel and not being a jerk would have sufficed.
Excellent, we will definitely be growing some dragon fruit at our little farm!
Asian garden 2 table lovely
no you wont
Felicitation
Mine two I've got over 250 plants all on large wooden fence posts
Wishing you a dragonbounty harvest.
These is how the dragon fruit master talk about dragon fruit. Love his passionate energy. Thank you!
Great vid guys. Good dynamic between you two, good production and content. Well done 👍
What will be the best time for pruming? Kindly share.
This is amazing! I can't wait until mine start producing fruit! I got some cuttings from a neighbor and they are growing massive. One of the off shoot arms is like 4 feet long.
Amazing!
I have a red fleshed Dragon fruit, and some yellow Dragon Fruit seedlings.
They are such wacky cacti and I love them!
Thanks for this video, it has taught me so much
It sounds pretty good to me
Wow! I'm Vietnamese American. We love to eat Dragonfruit. Thank you so much for sharing your video.
Actually found a Ecuador Palora fruit in one of my local grocery stores. We saved some of the seeds and planted them. They are a couple inches tall at this point. Guess it would be best to find some root stock to transplant it on to.
any update on the plant? :)
Richard Lee and Kevin you guys have helped so much I do not garden but whatever I ask my wonderful hard working husband to grow he does and this is the newest member. Of the garden Dragon fruit
Teach me everything there is to know about a fruit I can never grow living in West Michigan. Maybe someday when my Mom moves to Florida, we'll start dragon fruit and mango trees!
:( I know I wish it could grow everywhere!
Build a sun room
You probably can grow it there but maybe use a greenhouse to keep the climate under control??
Just started growing dragon fruit, all your videos have helped me with getting started. Thanks guys. Steve from Australia
Looking thru the comments like,
"who else wants to buy clippings?"
😆 🤣 😂 dead serious tho where can I buy some? Like the one behind you eating in the pots? You ever had a garden stalker?. Appreciate you guys. 😆 🤣 😂
Wow, Kevin, how fun to see these unique and beautiful fruit! I enjoy these off-campus adventures 😄💛🌻💚
Think it helps with boners
Laxative :(
@@epicgardening hahahaha damn. My bad. Why not say that thats not horrible lmao
Aww man lol no lie I thought the same thing buddy did but the laxative thing that was not expected

Great to see the both of you teaming up ! 😎
Props on the Kiwi brand knife. Been a professional chef 12 years and have used the same kiwi knife since the start. Awesome knife and can’t beat the price
Truly inspirational!!! Fantastic lesson & collaboration on dragon fruits!!! 🐲
Charles 🤩👍
It is so satisfying to watch the harvesting of these sweet beasts.
I was fortunate to get a yellow one from the store. It was absolutely delicious and sweet. Of course I collected a bunch of seeds and hoping to grow them. I bought a heat mat to help them get started.
I did the same thing.
@Merrilee Crank success! I have a container full, more always popping up while some have a little cactus on top of them. Trying to decide when to start separating them.
I had no idea there were even that many varieties.. purple flesh ones sound so cool looking.
Thank you.
I learn so much from you all; and then, about all new variety of things as well.
These plants, and fruit are really very intersting.
Glad to hear!
My husband grows them and we love them!!!
Happy you’re passing the knowledge!!!
Just wondering what the "special property" of the yellow fruit is, I've got my first one growing 😆
that it tastes absolutely incredible, much better than anything else :D
I'm so excited my dragon fruit started growing!!!! Thanks guys
I wish I could grow these but England's summer is too cool to grow much.
Greenhouse?
move to Spain or Portugal when u retire. your pension is worth more and the weather doesn't make u miserable and do all the gardening u want
But you can grow beautiful Rose's and flowers which we cannot
Apple trees!!!! Just try to grow those down south.
Strawberries, pumpkins, apples, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, spinach, kale, tomato, potato, carrots, beets, corn, peas, etc etc etc
Yes, thanks for these. I started growing mine from seeds and cuttings
I was surprised to hear you grow dragon fruit from seed. Do they grow true to the parent? And would you mind suggesting a few nurseries that can be relied upon for good stems to propagate from.
This is very informative. I love your video since I love dragon fruits primarily due to its unique benefit, lol.
You have no idea how jealous I am looking at those babies.. 😭
Hi!!! So beautiful all your dragon fruit plants!!!!, I'm very excited, finally I got branches this year!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!?
If only I lived in a hardiness zone suitable 😭(needs zones 9-11, 9 needs frost protection). I'm zone 8. Fresh dragonfruit is so much better than imported. I remember eating a fresh one in Vietnam and being surprised by how delicious it was compared to ones I had eaten back home (Canada).
You should get Richard to host with you again! You guys make a great team!
Wow he really knows his dragonfruit lol
I picked some this week in an area where it grows along the roadside . It’s the white variety but, they taste way better than in the stores. 👍🏽🇻🇮
Love watching Kevin eat dragonfruit. He looks so happy!
