We dont tend to have products that you use on your side of world so for those that dont have the root powder either: when propagating cuttings in water, once roots are established. I just start adding a little soil each day over about a week to the water. I find this helps to acclimate from full water to soil.

This is what I’ve been looking for. Found a few roots growing out of a store bought fruit.
When u buy a drgaon fruit and take the ccatus piece off do u just plant it since it like alreay dry from bottom
I usually graft it to get a better chance. But also had success planting the dry part and getting it to root.
Richard, I picked the best one from my grocery and twisted the stem off. How do I show it to you and have you tell me if it is good for rooting?
I lived in Ecuador for 8 years and since moving back to the states, have always missed the Pitajaya! Going to try to grow this and bring some of that flavor into my own garden! Thank you! Lovely video!!
Depending on where in the States you live, the climate may not be suitable for dragon fruit, so keep that in mind. Even if the temperature is great, the humidity might not be enough. Take care, and consider a greenhouse.

I’ve been searching for one just like this and never could until my wife came home today with literally a small arm on it😮I just root dip it and placed it in some soil. So let’s see what happens. It says golden dragon

Thank you Richard! I picked up a yellow dragon with a same size green momma attached today at Publix. I'm trying this method of rooting to see what will happen. Already growing bunch of yellows I started from a seed. They are still too young to bare fruit. My red dragons are producing this year. Thank you for introducing me to growing this wonderful fruit and an entire community of growers who share the same passion!!!❤
I have had no problem growing red and white flesh dragon fruit from seed, but I have not had a single germination of yellow seeds. Irregardless of the method I try. The only difference being the gel encapsulated seeds typical of the yellow dragon fruit. I found a yellow with a good stem and am attempting to root it as in this video.

Ok so I live in the north east in Connecticut and I just put the seeds in some dirt or I put it in a papers towel and mist it until I see a tiny bit of green then I put the paper towel in the dirt in a small pot and they sprouted for me also I would recommend putting a plastic bag over the pot
You can add a small amount of the hydrogen peroxide right in the shot cup of water. The oxygen will help them root and you won't have to switch the water out as often too.

I graft many types of cactus and wanted to try grafting yellow types, however i could only find a piece just big enough to try and root, thanks to seeing this video, i now have a rooted section! I had literally just done my first graft with store bought fruit using your other video and this video just pops up. I wasn’t confident of grafting so would have tried this rooting method instead. Now i gotta go see if i can find another fruit with stem to try rooting. But, but why not just root in soil like normal cutting? Why in water? Thanks for sharing.
Found u thru Kevin, (Eric/Epic). Love your videos! sometimes it's hard to find an expert who also understands what makes a video not only watchable, but legit entertaining. Great job! My son and I want to grow ANY dragon fruit so that we can taste a ripe one. We've tried 2 of the most common ones, and a small red one that was as disgusting as it was beautiful, a juxtaposition SO strong I couldn't believe my own senses! So, thanks again for the info!

I wish I had seen this video a few weeks ago. 😢 i bought some fruits that had thick, healthy stems connected to them. I didn't know that I could have grown them.
I have 15 red dragon fruit plants growing, started from seed. The yellow never took sprout 😞
At least now i know for the next time I buy yellow with stems... I can regrow them. 😀

Growing from seeds, does take quite some time. I began growing my plants nearly 2 yrs ago, without a greenhouse. Just growing them indoors. They are about 10-20 inches long. Lots of white soft spikes, and quite a few black hard spikes. Can I ask, what do I do about the side growths?
Out of Nowhere, a few of them grew side sprouts (overnight), and are about 1-3inches long.
I'm about to head to the store to try this haha. Thank you!

Yes, cut the end of stem before submerging in water to let it root.
Which end goes in the water ? The part that was in the fruit or the outside cut end ?

That looks similar size and all to one I got the other day , it was the first dragon fruit I have ever tried and I really liked it but I don't think any of them had any stem material on them at all but I will try to remember that just in case because I would love to be able to grow some. Thanks I did start the seeds from the one I got.

Hello Richard, thanks for this awesome video. My wife and I are starting our fruit garden and one of the fruits we want to grow is Dragon Fruit. We have a question, we were given two cuttings yesterday, they are about two feet long each. Do I need to put them in water to get the roots going or is that method only when starting from a fruit stem? Thank you in advance for all your future videos. Is 55 degrees fine for a dragon fruit for the winter months 🤔
55F is fine but anything in the frost temps will start to do damage like 38-34F
I live in North CA. Temp starts to drop to 40-45 F at night. Is it still safe to keep the young DF outside or I need to cover them with the frost protection blanket. I have been covering them for this week just in case. Thanks Richard.
@Tropical Bay Area : I put them at the most sunny location. They get sun all morning and most afternoon but haven’t noticed any growth. I potted them in September I think, should I fertilize them a little bit since they are babies, about 5 -7 months old.

Actually, the bubbling of hydrogen peroxide doesn't show that it's killing anything (though you could use it as a proxy to know that the H2O2 hasn't completely decomposed into H2O and thus potentially able to kill living things). The bubbling of the H2O2 is decomposition into H2O & O2 catalyzed by protective enzymes called catalases which are ubiquitous. These will be found in the plant tissue (though many bacteria will have catalases as well).
How long will this method take to start reproducing fruit?

Question: the cut part on the top (not the bottom where you want roots) and where the fruit was attached... does it need to be sealed? If it does, what do you use to seal it? Or, will it "scab over" and be okay.
Can you root this kind of cuttings in sphagnum moss? I had very good results with Epiphyllums

i seeded some about 1 1/ 2 years ago indoors. extremely slow growth nowhere even close to 12 inches high

Richard! I am honestly surprised you put dragon fruits in water, my trick for cutting is to leave them in the shade, they grow the roots in the dark normally like a cutting does.
Water just turns dragonfruit plant to mush.
i got about 50 cuttings in the garage right now rooting, all i need is the proper motivation this week to make all the trellises for the crop

How do you know which end of the stem to put in the water vs up in the air?
How do you actually find stem like that though? The ones here, ngl, walmart stems are cut around, not through, and this other store cuts em really short and puts wave over the stubs, I can't seem to find a nice meaty one

How long do you expect it to be before this is mature enough to flower? Isn't this method similar to planting a seed, so it will be many years before flowering? Or is it quicker somehow?
Anything from seed is gonna be a while. Cuttings, in general, come from a plant already past that life stage, and in this case, and usually most cases, come from a plant that's already fruit bearing, so we're talking maybe 6-10 years with seedlings vs 6 months to a year from cutting, in terms of fruit production
We're you able to get a fruit producing plant to grow? Maybe not enough time yet.

Hi Richard. Nice video again. one Q: isn't this method going to take much much longer for us to get fruit? I'd be interested if you kept this plant going and to see how fast you can get it to fruit. I'd bet the other ones you grafted fruit much faster. Also, I am enjoying the Facebook group that you started. Some nice ppl in there. Frank Miao.
This method should mimic the same as rooting a regular cutting. It should be able to produce fruits within 1-2 years. It’s just a very small cutting but it’s a mature cutting for sure because it was cut off a fruit.
Hey can I ask you a question I just got 4 cuttings of a yellow dragon fruit its quite matured and its about 30~40cm long i planted it into a pot already its been 1 week what I want to know is do I need to keep watering it everyday or should I keep it dry? I hear for roots to grow it should be dry and I also hear you do need to water them alittle your the pro when it comes to DF please let me know
