Have an awesome day and never stop learning!
One of my patrons suggested that the bug I found in Texas (≈11:18) was a kissing bug. It definitely has kissing bug legs, but the shape of the abdomen looks more seed bug. Also, the coloration is strange. I don't know!
I always get kissing bugs, conifer seed bugs, assassin bugs, and squash bugs mixed up. They all look almost exactly the same to me. This is why I'm not an entomologist.
If you find the species, post it here so I can learn about it!
I’ve lived in San Antonio my whole life and I’m terrified of those because I thought they were kissing bugs also. Now I’m confused 😂 whatever they are we have a lot of them.
I can’t say what species but I think it’s in the genus Mozena
This insect would be a leaf-footed bug in the family Coreidae, which are similar to kissing bugs which are in the assassin bug family Reduviidae. I am an entomologist and I still have a really hard time telling the difference between hemipterans so don’t feel too bad
We always called them "stink bugs" because they smelt really bad if you stepped on them. Maybe they are what you call "squash bugs"?
@@tirebiter4009 yes, lots of different groups of insects have chemicals that have distinct smells when they are crushed such as ground beetles and desert beetles, as well as the true bugs that many people call stink bugs within the family Pentatomidae. Squash bugs are included within the family Coreidae which is most similar to what is shown in the video. In the southern states “stink bugs” refer to desert stink beetles in Tenebrionidae. This is why colloquial terms get messy because the term stink bug could refer to any number of different groups of insects, which is why I have found it helpful to learn family names of groups of insects to refer to them more usefully.
forrest at the start: "Why do people do this"
forrest at the end: "I wanna do more of this"
I want to sponsor you so you can impact more people! People who talk through a smile are more believable and when they are scientist it's even more amazing!
Lol, here's gas money. It should get you about a gallon in California.
@@nathanjasper512 what do you suppose such absurd hyperbole accomplishes aside from projecting the appearance that you either:
lack a fundamental grasp on reality and you actually think gas is $50/ gallon in California..
Or......
your agenda forces you to speak ill of your political opponents even if it means saying obgiously ridiculous things...?
As you drive through different states these days, you can look over at your female partner, friend,or family member and literally watch them lose basic human rights in real time. That being said your enthusiasm for science is contagious. Keep up the amazing work Forrest.
what do you mean?
@@muchanadziko6378 The autonomy of people with uteruses and their rights to privacy and healthcare changes from state to state. As you drive cross country you'll pass through states that uphold those human rights and others that violate them.
@@jess.singswithleaves6 oh, ok, yeah
And if you drive backwards, you can watch them gain basic human rights in real time! Hooray!

You say you've never vlogged before, but you're editing style is better than most of the professional vloggers I've watched.
If you decide to do more roadtrips like this I'd totally watch!
It is like how the wife of the guy who made "Mad Max Fury Road" edited the movie, giving it a unique style because she had never edited an action movie before.
This is indeed the perfect video. The comedy from just being kinda awkward trying to figure out how to vlog along with sporadic bits of relevant science lessons that are powered by Forrest's high energy that comes from a passion and love of all things science.
Damn you Forrest. That Doom inspired screen for the travel stats genuinely made me stop the video just so I could laugh entirely too hard
Exactly. It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Road trip rules:
* Avoid interstates whenever possible
* Stop to take pictures of anything interesting (you WON'T be that way again
* Don't eat at any national chains or any place you can eat at home
Seriously. Sometimes the best part of travelling is eating weird stuff.
This blog was so fantastic. Kinda awkward, gave off a bit of dad energy, overall felt rlly natural. This makes me feel like I’m on a road trip with dad. I love how Forrest knows a little bit about a lot of things!!!
Super entertaining ✨
Forrest It was such a great pleasure to meet you in person at Vidcon.
(I am the guy with the lab coat who asked to take a picture with you)
You coming to my backyard in my home state while having an incredible science road trip really makes me happy that I came out to see you in person. You are definitely one of my favorite human beings I have the pleasure of knowing.
I have to say, hearing that you're from Tulsa, which is where I've grown up, is really inspiring to me. I'm headed off to college (boomer sooner!) for a biology degree in two weeks, and I guess I have this idea in my mind that I won't be able to make it in this conservative and very religious state. Hopefully, I'll be able to break the stigma within my own family and local community. Thanks for the content you make!
Enjoy your pursuit of knowledge. It is always worthwhile and, hopefully, never ends.
that is fucking terrifying that bloody SCIENCE has a stigma
Go do cool science! The absolute best thing I've gained from my career in science has been the ability to communicate complex topics to everyone from my 7 year old cousin to my fellow scientists. Practice that and you will thrive!
I feel the same way. The weird thing is. I don't have an issue with them being religious. It's the fact that they have to try and discredit science and bend the entire world around them to fit their worldview. Like I can't be some guy just living life, I'm a sinner destined for eternal torment.
You'll be awesome. Remember there are Boomer Sooners that are people of faith, are rational & believe in science! I don't believe one belief negates the other.
Have fun, be careful and learn ssoo much science!
His endless enthusiasm and passion for science reminds me so much of classic Bill Nye 😁❤️ love being along for the science ride every time
His passion is so warm and sunny! His students are very lucky to have an engaged, passionate teacher.
Forrest Valkai the new science guy!
ADORED this. I would watch Forrest grocery shopping, as I know he couldn’t help himself and he’d explain the physics behind shrink-wrapping and other shit. I only wish we could have seen more from the actual con, as that looked like so much fun.
Thanks for the video, Forrest… and as always, for the knowledge.
And point out all the hybridized fruit, and review the various ways the human body uses various nutrients, and casually mention some unorthodox but nifty science-y uses of various products, and show off some neat bug he spotted in the restroom (while also telling the motion-activated everything to shut up so he can talk about the neat bug, even though it'd be the motion sensors he'd be nerding out about if he hadn't spotted the bug), etc. XD
*People-* "Hey"
*Forrest-* "How fricken cool is this! How fricken cool is that! HOW FRICKEN COOL IS SCIENCE!"
Your energy is crazy contagious dude, I love it! Keep on keepin on
Usually I don’t watch vlogs but I was totally up for this one! (Oh wow Forrest doesn’t either lol)
Forrest, your videos are always pleasure to watch. I wish more teachers and communicators had your enthusiasm. I hope I get to see one of your presentations in person one day. And, yes. California drivers don't seem to know what that little protrusion on the left side of the steering column is for. I live in California and it's a big pet peeve of mine. Many Cali drivers seem to think a car is a restaurant, a phone booth and a beauty salon all wrapped up in to one rolling box.
Oh, that thing? It's just a panhandle. 😉
Definitely liked following along on your, very realistic, vlogging journey. Tangents, weird annoyances along the way and obsessions with wind turbines and all. I especially liked how you called out those fossils for sale... like, if it seems too good to be real, it's probably fake.
You did a great job. I especially love how excited you get about every science fact you share. My wife loved it when you said "HE'S SO LITTLE", and chuckled a little bit. I would watch this type of video constantly if you were so inclined to make more. Also, if I was you, I would stop worrying about how other people do their vlogs, and do what makes you happy like you did in this video and it shows through the camera. Keep up the great work.
Forrest, I just have to say that every video of you is a gift. Learning new things, presented in your charrming way is awesome and an enrichmemt for every day.
Thank you
"We'll put that on the next one. Episode 2 of exploring New Mexico's holes."
You said this as a joke but Carlsbad Caverns are an unreal experience. New Mexico got some dang nice holes.
I love how much you are in love with the most usual of things, that about 99% of people never even think about at all. I know this feeling aswell and it is a very humbling one. It lets us appreciate what wonderful place our planet is and shows us that we should not take everything for granted.
The world would be a much better place and in a much better state, if there were more people like you!
"That's what your mom said"
Omg I loved it! You two are awesome. Thanks for taking us along on your road trip.
I grew up in Texas and was a wanderer in my late teens/early 20s (about 50 years ago). This video is giving me flashbacks. Texas was aptly described as nothing for miles and miles but miles and miles.
gotta say, I love the editing
"Land of 1000 Windmills" was actually really cool to see! I never see renewable energy sources on a large scale like that!
Edit: this video was the perfect use of time during my plasma donation. Thanks Forrest!
As for the containers on the train in Arizona: Those containers are designed to exacting specifications to be loaded in some factory half way around the world, trucked to the port, loaded on a cargo ship (like a reverse game of Jenga), floated across oceans, loaded onto trains, transfered to trucks, AND THEN have the contents unloaded and put on the shelves at Walmart or Target (or even Amazon warehouses). This system is why it is so darned cheap to buy so many things manufactured thousands of miles away. I encourage you to look up the system. It is absolutely amazing.
Your enthusiasm for science & knowledge is infectious.
As a native Arizonan, I've become almost nonchalant about the Grand Canyon, since it's almost in my backyard. Watching your reaction to seeing it for the first time gave me the chance to experience it anew, and appreciate it in way I haven't for many years.
I'm very familiar with that I-40 route from visiting my husband's family in SE Kansas.
I drove all night on our first trip, so napped all morning. I woke up in Oklahoma. The first words out of my mouth were, "It's SO GREEN!". Interesting contrast.
By the way, I really enjoyed your travel vlog.
I think you not knowing how travel blogs work was a service. This was definitely one of my favorite and most educational travel vlogs ever!
Just an outstanding video. Everything from the visuals, the music added, your enthusiasm for such cool stuff -- and a couple things that I wasn't even aware of, like the crater in Arizona.
Just Awesome!
Firstly, holy shit! sometimes I forget just how much (and how pretty) land y'all Gringos stole. Secondly, the spider in your room looked a lot like a Tiger Spider, hero spiders that eat other spiders, awesome hunters.
Edit: 42:09 TBF, yes, it's extremely dumb behaviour but then you show about a minute of Chilean landscapes xD, it's so eerie how much they look alike.
You better deliver on "Exploring New Mexico's Holes." Y'all are too cute, you're a great teacher, and your enthusiasm is warm and bright!
I loved the dramatic music during the Meteor Crater segment. Melted colas...in AZ we all know never to leave food, electronics or aerosol cans in a vehicle. Windshield sunshades and tinted windows are essential. Every piece of desert you said was 'nothingness' has so much life! You just need to explore it! Gila monsters, tarantulas, chuckwallas, rattlesnakes, horned lizards, coatis....it's so cool. Come back to AZ, I'll set you up with a great reptile guy who'll help you see the desert's beauty. You can even tell him all about cicadas. Cicadas creep him out! I relocate rattlesnakes part time for him. I'm a supporter, you should have my contact info. I wish we could duplicate you for every science class in America. Great trip. Great vlog!
I love this vlog more than others because others are trying to create energy and excitement from nothing. You're sharing genuine excitement from the exciting knowledge you have.
I really liked the unbridled excitement at at the thought that the Behringer crater used to be 1400 feet deep (20:23).
I recently moved to Oklahoma and I have to say, it is one of the most boring states ever. Well I take that back I accidentally ended up down in Texas once and that place really sucks lol. Staring at the wind turbines is the only things that keeps me sane on trips here. Thanks for the video Forest.
I love how enthusiastically you expound even the most basic science knowledge and how genuinely animated you are when doing so. I find your passion for the world around you and the wonders therein invigorating. I also really liked the whole feel of this video from the music to the editing and leaving in things like the sedan suddenly getting in the way of your shot, or the camera focusing on the bugs on the windshield instead of the wind turbines, and swearing at the car that passed by were such humanizing details that made it feel like getting to know you as just a normal dude which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you for posting this video and I hope to see more like it soon because it really put a smile on my face 👍
i dissagree with your first statement. this isnt a horrible vlog. in my opinion its one of the best I've seen in ages. thanks for making my day😃
I love the “did you sign a waiver” it had me laughing for way to long
I just watched your 2 vlog videos. Dude, these are incredibly entertaining and educational at the same time. I'd watch videos of you driving around talking about shit anywhere on the planet. Please keep making these!
This is technically the best travel vlog I have ever seen as it is the only travel vlog I have ever seen!
I have one question...why aren't you more famous? The enthusiastic science balanced with comedic elements is...*chef's kiss*
hahaha, loved that you did the Dihydrogen Monoxide Bit at your show :E. It's the Main Ingredient in Acid Rain! If you give it enough time, it could carve a furrow into the Earth as big as the Grand Canyon!
You are now my first true Role model Forrest. I may not agree on everything with you, but you are truly an incredible inspiration of a human being, and I strive to emulate you to the best of my abilities. Thank you for everything you do.
You are a treasure ser. I love your attitude and appreciation for even the little things.
And to find out you are a Game Grumps fan made me smile.
I can't wait for my little one to get old enough to appreciate your videos.
I don't know anything about Vlogs either, so that evens out. Great video!
Brings back many memories from our road trip to the Grand Canyon 10 years ago.
Can we have more, please?!! I freaking LOVED this!! Thank you for sharing your trip and your knowledge with us!
LOVED your travel vlog! You do you & how ever you want to do it.
But only if it’s a science travel vlog!
There’s nothing better than watching your joy & love of science. You make it fun & exciting & wondrous
Can’t wait for more
This was perfect and I could watch hours more. Thank you for sharing your love for the insanely complex and beautiful planet we share. I absolutely love this.
When you went off and have us a lesson on how wind and wind turbines work, I knew this was going to be good 😂 love your energy and passion! And I'd love it if you could do a video on wind energy to help dispel all the misinformation. The facts/stats on bird fatalities was great. I know there's also a lot of research into safer and more efficient turbines. Haven't heard much since i got out of college back in 2012, so I'd love an update on the field.
My favorite was that researchers were using the design of a humpback whale pectoral fin to increase efficiency so the blades would spin better even in very low wind conditions.
I freaking loved this video. It's the first travel vlog I've seen and I've learnt so much all over the course of an hour; and it's been very fun! Love to see more if you're willing to make some :D
Super fun video, Forrest! I enjoyed every second of it and would LOVE to see more! :)
This was awesome! More please. It brought back so many great memories of road trips I've taken, living in the Southwest. Some recommendations for future trips: The North Rim of the Canyon is really special, and worthy of a second trip. If you stay in Kanab, UT, it's a great starting point since it's equidistant to Bryce, Zion, and the North Rim of the GC. Also, even though it's further afield in Eastern AZ, Canyon de Chelly is another amazing and beautiful place- right outside of Chinle in Navajo country, as well as National Monument, Vermillion Cliffs, and Horseshoe Bend. I used to live in Arizona so have had the pleasure of seeing all these places...oh and Sedona is another gorgeous place. So much to see.
Honestly this is the best vlog I've ever seen. It's so wholesome, earnest, informative, and passionate. I don't think I've ever smiled so hard, so many times, watched a UA-cam video before.
You're enthusiasm for science is contagious ,thank you🥰
This was so awesome! Usually I don’t watch vlogs but I gave this a go and was completely engaged the whole way through! Definitely looking forward to more of this if/when you decided to make it! Thanks for being awesome!
This video reveals the value of a physical reality adventure trip with basic factual knowledge revealed and discussed about the real world without any mysticism--- excellent.
Literally the first travel vlog I've ever seen and I had a whole lot of fun! Can't wait for more!
That was lovely! Just the right amount of pause to appreciate the beautiful things and excited Forrest explaining all the reasons it's so freaking cool. Bravo!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just watching this kind of highlights that a passion and understanding of science makes the world around you just so awesomely fascinating!
This video was so incredibly informative, fun, and exciting! I had some of the most pronounced feelings of absolute euphoria that I've experienced in a long from watching a UA-cam, vlog, and scientific genre of video. Excellent job, I can't wait to see more science expedition travel vlogs that you create/upload in the future! :)
"Hmmm... Ya know ya shoulda taken that left at Albecoikie!"
Thanks for this trip, Forrest! An area that I most likely will never see. This road trip takes us along with you and really gives a good sense of what the land is like. Only 16 mins into this so much more to see any many more BAAAD jokes from you too, I suppose.
I love you Forrest! I'll never stop learning if you never stop making videos.
This was one of my favorite trips when I was a kid living in flagstaff!! Thanks for sharing this!!
That was great. Funny, informative, and surprising. I love how excited you are about learning!
You Day 1 end bumper made me pause the video and play a few levels of DOOM. Thank you, Forrest.
Actually, every day end bumper was a moment to pause and play DOOM.
I lived in Alamogordo for a few years. I can say with certainty, RV drivers are NOT the only people who tire of Breaking Bad jokes. XD
And I am so glad you got experience the Grand Canyon AND the night sky. Everyone I know who has gone has marveled at it and some have walked away better people, understanding just how wondrous the world and everything around it really is.
I've lived in New Mexico my whole life, and I still love learning new things about it. Would definitely love to see a video about exploring New Mexico's holes. The state reptile is one of my favorite animals, the Whiptail lizards, all female species. Just super cool.
This is the best science roadshow ever! it makes me wanna go on a road trip with you! just talking science and seeing stuff!
Please do more of these!! My wife and I watched this and I finally convinced him to go on a road trip to the Grand Canyon next year!!! OuO
Thanks for that interesting tidbit about light scattering in the Grand Canyon. Fun fact: while flying it may not be exactly illegal, the tattered flag on the Mobil station should be taken down and disposed of. Yes, I'm a vet, why do you ask?
this video was so great! honestly Forrest, you deserve every great thing that comes your way and so much more! also those doom transitions were amazing and couldnt have been better!
I love Amber's random commentary! ❤️
I absolutely loved this! Definitely consider doing more vlogs, I really enjoyed seeing the world though your perspective. Informative ✅️, entertaining ✅️.
Did you stop at Dr. Hovinds Dinosaur Adventure Land? 😂
Please do more of these travel blogs! I enjoyed this immensely
This was awesome!! I usually don't love vlogs, but I saw you talk about this video on the clock app.

I caught the Jackson Browne reference.
I'm a little late to the party but man I would love a series like this. So much Science out there for us to learn. Awesome work Forrest. Keep it up.
My dad was stationed in Cali when I was little. We were close enough to a wind farm that I saw it multiple times. I remember always being disappointed whenever we went for a drive a DIDN’T pass the wind farm. Love those things.
What a great video Forrest. Thank you for doing this. It was highly enjoyable.
41:33 yep, it is good and fun dude!
Also you completely nailed it with "el mal país", good job :D.
I would absolutely watch every single one of these that you make.
Wow, this actually gave me some kind of feeling of peace. Bizarre.
The best content I’ve watched on this platform in a while. Thank you
This was the fascinating, hopeful, funny vide we needed! Thanks so much
I LOVED this Vlog. More please!!!!!
Great stuff, love the enthusiasm for this weird universe.
I would love to watch more these!
My best roadtrip was with my dad, from Fairbanks, AK, to my home in southeast PA. We stopped at a lot of awesome spots, but I wish we had done more! This is a great video, Forrest!
I've never seen a travel vlog before so this is officially the best travel vlog I've ever seen.
This Viog is the only thing keeping me alive through my depression right now ❤️
Thank you for sharing and creating this memory with us
“Everyone will help you change a tire here, and everyone will stab you over sandwich”
😂 Perfect way to describe Oklahomans
If I had to take away only one quote from this video, it would be that one. I'm also partial to "We pronounce this [Miami] my-am-ah here". You can observe Forrest's potential energy being converted into kinetic energy in these scenes.
I came from the podcast! People love the show! The science fun mixed with chaos language makes me feel right at home. My lab does "f bomb Fridays" but it's honestly every day. It's going to be a fun transition when I have to get a different job and not curse and flip things off constantly.
Edit: I would like to like this more than once please, youtube make it happen
And the Oaklahoma panhandle is there because there was a law that said your state can't have slaves if you're above that parallel, so Texas stopped at that parallel. Yay Texas, good job s/
this was so fun to watch i hope to see more of these from you in the future!!
Forrest your vibe is so cool!! i definitely enjoyed this and would love to see more of it
I love this so much. More roadtrips, please.
I found you from Athiest Experience.. you have become my favorite guest BY FAR.. You have an incredible talent for understanding and explaining science to others.. I could listen to you explain this on your channel or on AE all day every day. You are simply awesome. Please post more long form content like this.. or just talking to the camera!
Definitely a new genre of video Forrest! Do more!
I travelled to the US for work. I was amazed at the flags everywhere.
I really appreciate your vision of the future. It was beautifully stated. I went to school in Tulsa - ORU. I’m not Christian anymore - but did enjoy my time there. Anyways your a fantastic science communicator and I really enjoy your videos.
Loved the video blog! Also loved the Doom daily summary screen....well done, sir. Well done.
